My Tesla Model X has front, side, and rear cameras that are used for cruise control, lane keeping, emergency braking, and eventually, full self driving. They also continousily record the video streams from these cameras onto a usb drive. Have you ever been out driving and seen something that you wish you had a video recording of. Well that happened to me just the other day.

Winter Range Test, 2021 Tesla X Long Range Plus
I’m eager to watch a video repeating this trip as close as possible with your 2023 Model X. I hope you can find similar conditions. Great info for a prospective buyer from Minnesota. Thank you.
@ScottWLarson Hi Scott. I've done this same ski trip several times with our Refreshed X, but I've not posted a comparison video. One thing I'm sure of is that the heat pump in the new Model X does give a bit more range in the winter than in our previous version. I'm running the same snow tires and I reset the trip meter when the snow tires go on. The average consumption for our winter driving in the refresh X is 318 wh/mi. My records show that we drove our previous X (2021 Long Range Plus) 3 full winters, putting on 14,069 winter tire miles, with an average consumption of 353 wh/mi. That is close to what Tesla claimed, about a 10% improvement in winter range. Our typical winter trip is mostly highway, 100 miles round trip, driving at 65 mph on two lane rural highways, so our driving is slower than in most areas. It is amazing how much more energy is required driving 75 or 80 mph on the interstate. We live at 6,200 feet in elevation, so the air is less dense, and we have also noticed that the range is less at lower elevations. We are fortunate to have a garage, so our winter trips always start out with a warm preconditioned car. The coldest temperature we have driven this car has been -20 F, but a more typical winter drive would be around + 15 F. I don't really know what the full battery capacity is on mine, but OutofSpec Reviews tested a 2022 refresh X and they were able to pull out 93 kwh (100% charge to fully depleted). Using their number and my average winter consumption of 318 wh/m, that gives me a 100% to fully depleted range of 290 miles. The OutofSpec 70 mph summer range test resulted in 331 miles. Winter highway driving at a higher speed or many short commutes with a cold soaked car would result in a much higher average consumption, so take my results for what they are. We have taken several long distance trips with the car including a recent trip to Minnesota in late November. Driving across South Dakota at 80 mph with a slight head wind at 30 degrees F resulted in 410 wh/m and with that level of consumption, the total range would be around 225 miles. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and for posting.
It really worked for us. Thanks you much sharing the video.
Glad to hear it was helpful, thanks for watching!

Your're still kicking since you are keeping so active. That is the key in getting older, don't just sit down and wait.
Thanks for this update. I followed your lead and traded up to a new Model X (upgraded from 2020 Model X) so I am enjoying V13.2.2 and the continuing progress. I tested it in Boise. It was amazing, just like you reported for Bend. I live in McCall, so my experience is similar to yours.
Thanks for tuning in and for sharing your experience. It's great to hear that you're having good luck with the new version.
Thank you so much for your video! I really needed the advice!
I'm glad it was helpful. Thanks for tuning in and have a great week.

I'm glad you were able to recover the card. Thanks for tuning in and have a great week.
How lazy do you have to be to care if the door opens for you?
It's one of the little joys in life to be able to open the door for Julie as she approaches the passenger's door, especially if her hands are full. As funny as it sounds, it's similar to the seat and steering wheel automatically adjusting to your preference when the drivers change. It's certainly not necessary but a feature that you would miss if your car had it at one time and then they took the feature away via software.
So if there is no wind it is possible the Tesla ist able to do what every other car in the history can do too and in most cases better
Do I need to buy two different tire sizes for my model X? 265/45R20 275/45R20
I'm running the same size, front and back, 265/50R-19 BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK DM-V2 XL that I purchased through Tire Rack back in 2017. I'm still using this setup on our 2023 Standard X. I had the TPMS sensors changed over to the new Bluetooth version so that our new car would recognize them, but other than that I've had no fitment issues. I just installed this setup on our vehicle yesterday and they have ample tread for another season. Now for the disclaimer. Tesla sells a winter tire package for the Model X, but the Tesla dealer is over 500 miles round trip from my location, and they did not have the tires in stock when I needed them in 2017, so I went with plan B and chose this alternate setup based on advice from Tire Rack. The 19-inch tires have a higher sidewall than the 20 inchers, but the circumference is nearly the same and they have worked very well for me. I have had no issues with my setup, but if I lived closer to a Tesla shop, or if Tesla would have had them delivered, I would have gone with Tesla's winter tire package. The price I paid for this setup was similar to Tesla's package, but your results may vary. As with all things of this nature, seek out a second opinion from a knowledgeable source.

Awesome 🎉
Thanks for the Door Review. How does it work if you approach the car in a hurry not from behind but from the front or the side?
Thank you. I have a Model S, late model 2017. I’m going to try this hack tomorrow.
Thank u sooooooooooooo much. My is Tesla model S 2020 and absolutely same

Hello, can you please provide the model number? I can’t seem to make out the numbers from your photo

Nice to see FSD tests in rural areas. Your videos are great.
Excellent video and commentary! 👍
I appreciate you tuning in and posting feedback. Have a great week
The speed sign that was ignored had an auxiliary sign attached above it. I've had a similar experience with speed signs not recognized if the sign is altered from the standard shape.
I'll see if I can take a still photo of the speed signs for reference and I'll insert them into my next test video. Thanks for tuning in and for sharing your experience.
Will the front door stop before it hits an object? For example, if you were closer to your garage wall and opened the driver door?
That is a great question. So far I have not had it hit any objects (garage walls or parked cars, but I was able to fool the car by placing a soft plastic rubbermade tote (apprx 40 inches long, 24 inches tall) near the door opening. In that instance the door hit the tote. It isn't 100% perfect, so if you have any doubt or park in unusual circumstances, then it is probably best to turn this feature off.
Wow a fellow Star Valley neighbor! Hi
Howdy right back at ya. Thanks for checking in and have a great week
I enjoyed the different angle. Ty
The second angle was recorded on a handheld cell phone by my passenger and I think she did a great job. I haven't figured out a way to properly capture the driver's console, maybe I'll experiment with a chest mounted camera. Thanks for tuning in and have a great week.
Suggestion: Show the settings you have at the start of the video in the transcript please.
Great suggestion. For most of this drive, the autopilot was set on chill profile, offset 5%, relative +3 mph and the automatic set speed switch was set to off. I did change the automatic set speed switch to on for a few minutes on the return drive but the speed setting behavior seemed to be the same so I switched it back off to finish the drive.
Thanks really nice to see how it performs on rural dirt roads.
Thanks for tuning in and coming along for the ride.
Except it doesn't know to stay in the ruts and hugs the gravel edge. Kicking up rocks might be a problem.😊🚗
It used to increase when we increase the speed limit, looks like the update changed it. The issues I experienced were left turns it cuts into the opposite lane and the stopping and speeding is not very smooth
i guess you oppose some of the legislature of wy. wanting to ban the sale of ev's by 2035. what a nutty idea that was last year.
The anti EV sediment is pretty high. The State accepted 3.9 million of NEVI funding in 2022, 5 million in 2023, and I assume another 5 million this year and have yet to start construction of 1 EV charging station. There is a huge fast charging desert in central Wyoming and there many places I just can't drive to. The same group of lawmakers that proposed that bill also proposed a bill some time ago that prohibited utilities from purchasing renewable electricity. It was an attempt to keep the coal burning power plants from being shut down and replaced by cheaper renewables. I think that one may have even made it into law in some fashion. I try not to focus on those who think that the best way forward is to walk backward, or to not walk at all.
@@modelxevfun2858 sounds like a good business for some entrepreneurial person in parts of wyoming. b&b with electric car charging.

@rwhirsch A private company, Otterspace popped up last year and built 2 stall CCS fast chargers in Dubois, Pinedale, and Lander. I don't know what went wrong, but the charger in Dubois and the one in Lander are often unusable. Last March I made a trip to Minnesota and decided to take the shorter route from Jackson to Casper through Dubois. Plugshare showed the Dubois charger as being open and operational, but when we got there, we couldn't get the charger to work, and we ended up having to spend the night in Riverton using a level 2 charger in order to make it to Casper. I haven't tried the one in Lander, but reading the comments from others, it is not reliable. The worst part is that Plugshare often shows the chargers as operational. My advice to anyone routing through central Wyoming is to read the comments posted on these chargers before committing. I sure hope that Otterspace can solve the problem as they are causing more harm than good at the moment, and I sure hope that was not their intention. From my perspective, if Tesla would add 3 supercharger locations, Pinedale, Shoshoni, and Cody, most of the State would be reachable. The last Supercharge built in Wyo was in Evansville (Casper) and it opened in July of 2020 so we have had a long dry spell from Tesla.
@@modelxevfun2858 yes, anything but tesla is a no-go. it is unfortunate that every other charging company and every other ev company give the ev revolution a bad name...i'm sure this isn't by design...hmm
Think in future, speed limit signs will be absolute when the cars are so much safer than humans
I'm sure that the speed sign issue has to do with the placement of the signs, the resolution of the cameras, and GPS location databases. There is one highway sign in the valley where someone vandalized the sign with some black spray paint upping the speed limit. It looked pretty realistic and luckily our Tesla ignored the sign. It has since been replaced by the highway department. There are lots of edge cases and many things to work out yet before we can take a nap in the back seat while the car drives.
Great video, I am having the same issues with not reading speed limit signs and speed control, still amazed at the ability and it’s getting better all the time. I have tried the speed offset on and off but really made no difference on getting the speed to where it should be.
I tried changing the autopilot setting on the return drive to the auto speed setting, where the auto pilot determines the speed. It disables the scroll wheel speed setting option and replaces the max speed with "auto". I couldn't tell any difference in how the car behaved, but maybe that was because of the lack of other cars. I only drove with that setting for a few minutes, then went back to my usual setting of chill at 5% above posted speed setting. I'll have to give the auto speed setting another try the next time I'm driving in an area with more traffic.
How is charging on road trips on your area? The Tesla Superchargers look a ways apart. I see there are a few chargers on other networks.
We certainly could use a few more DC fast charging options in Central Wyoming. There are areas I can't drive to, especially in the winter. A typical example is trying to drive from Jackson to Casper. The distance is 287 miles with one mountain pass. It can be done by taking an alternate route down to the interstate, but the distance is 407 miles. We have a friend who has an off-grid cabin in the Bighorn Mountains and the drive is nearly 300 miles. There is one 60 kw CCS DC Fast charger at the Chevy dealer in Riverton and a fairly new CCS Charger in Dubois that has never worked, and a couple of slow level 2 chargers along the route, but we just won't make the trip as the risk of being stranded with no charging opportunities is too great.
@@modelxevfun2858 Thanks for the info. I've wondered about the viability of off interstate trips in Wyoming.
Please keep making these videos. As someone with HW3 and stuck with 12.3.6 for months, I appreciate knowing all of the issues that are still present in new builds. It’s a shame the car won’t drive the speed you tell it to, that’s a huge part of FSD and could be a dealbreaker for someone.
The good news is that I did take the previous version 12.5.1 on a 4 hour drive a few days before I got the newer version, and the drive included some city driving through Jackson Wyoming with typical busy summer traffic. The drive through the city went very well and it seems that it does better at speed control when surrounded by traffic. I'm sure it is frustrating waiting for Tesla to release this new version for HW3 cars, but the online sources report that it is coming and hopefully you will get an improved version.
Since version 12, you cannot tell the car what speed to drive at. You can sex the maximum speed but it will not necessarily drive at that speed. It will determine its own speed not exceeding your maximum.
You can still toggle off the “auto set speed offset” setting
@@duncansosso8010 Regardless of whether Auto Max is on or off, you cannot tell the car what speed to drive at. Don’t get confused with v11 which still activates on certain highways. v11 will drive at you set maximum speed. v12 drives at or below the maximum, often below.
Yes, that is my assessment as well. The old trick of using the scroll wheel to adjust the speed seems to be a hit and miss, mostly miss. I was joking with my wife that this is Tesla's way to make sure we are engaged at all times.
good job!
Thanks for tuning in and for posting.
Good to see how it is working in MT
I have the same issue with having to lower the speed by using the scroll wheel or increase speed by pressing the accelerator. FSD 12.5.1 does not adjust well to posted speed limits.
Thanks for your autopilot report. I just took delivery of my new Model X and it came with 12.3.6. I too am looking for progress on speed control. In my case, I have 35 mph corners on a 55 mph road. The car does brake but too late. The result is not dangerous, just rough and worrisome. I'm loving my car that is pretty close to identical to yours.
I was not very happy with 12.3.6 on rural 2 way roads and I'm much happier with 12.5.x. It does take some time to adjust to the new quirks but I think that Tesla is finally on the right path.
Make sure you select “advanced” on the software tab. Got my Y Friday before last with 12.3.6 and got the download notification 4 days later. For me the acceleration is a bit much on takeoff at times and yeah the speed thing is a head scratcher.
Thank you for this video. It is very informative without all the hype some other reviewers seem to have. My 2023 Model X is probably identical to yours with the possible exception of the exterior paint. I am having the exact issues that you report. I was glad the FSD now slows down appropriately when the speed limit lowers, but it takes forever (if ever) for the speed to pick up when the speed limit increases. I too have noticed that the FSD doesn’t always pick a speed limit change. It does not seem to pick up a flashing School Zone speed limit sign change to 20 mph (from the usual 30 mph). I have to manually slow down and reset the speed to 20 mph every single time. That’s not really a problem, but I shouldn’t have to do it. School zone speed limits are taken very seriously around here.
@777CaptMark Out on I80, some of the speed limit signs are "changeable" electronic signs that can be remotely lowered under poor weather conditions. I have a similar experience to you in that the FSD has never recognized them. I don't know how common they are across the US. I think the speed thing is solvable, especially with the newer camera hardware, but only time will tell. Thanks for tuning in and posting. Have a great week.
Seems like you have the auto speed offset active and that’s why it doesn’t exactly follow the speed signs?
I'll play around with the various options and see if that helps. The settings on this drive were chill, with a 5% offset. I went on a 4 hour drive yesterday and the best way to describe the bug is that it is pretty random in how it sets the speed. On the highway, it won't bring the car up to the posted speed limit or my max speed indicated on the display unless I manually bring it up to speed using the accelerator pedal. The car will slow down a bit for curves and then keeps the car at the reduced speed after the curve unless I manually raise the speed with the accelerator pedal. Other than the speed issue, this is the best version of FSD I've had, and I've had them all from the very beginning starting with our 2017 Model X.
Thank you for the report. Looks really good.
Thanks for tuning in and have a great week.
I share your experience of FSD on rural roads except my MX is still on 12.5 and my rural roads are in Vermont with many curves. Like you I rely on the right scroll wheel to adjust the speed because FSD tends to be too fast for road conditions even when following the posted speed limit. My greatest concerns are that FSD enters curves too fast, and it does not increase speed when the posted speed limit increases requiring a press on the accelerator. I do like the the hands off the steering wheel driving!
One aspect that was badly degraded in this version is the self parking feature in a parking lot. I stopped by an empty church parking lot on the way home and it was a complete failure. The parking space lines were pretty faded but I don't think that was the issue. The car just seemed confused. As they say two steps forward and one step backward. Thanks for tuning in and for posting your experience.
Nicely done. What camera and mounting device are you using? It looks like you can swivel the camera from a stationary mounting location. I also notice the speed issue in my 2023 Model Y but overall 12.5.1 is a better build.
I'm using an Insta360 x4 camera that is mounted to the windshield with a Delkin mini camera suction mount. It is a great camera for outdoor action shots but a poor choice for this use. The camera captures a 360 degree image so the view direction is done in post editing. I was hoping to be able show many different view angles, front view, left and right-side view as well as the center display and driver's console, but unfortunately there is just too much of a difference in the light conditions between the inside of the car and the outside view for that to work properly. If you manually set the camera so that the exposure is correct for the display, then the outside view is way over exposed. I was hoping to get by with just one camera, but the ideal setup would be two or more fixed cameras. Thanks for tuning in and for posting and have a great week.
@@modelxevfun2858 I think GoPro makes a 360 camera too but it may suffer from the same exposure issues. Thanks for the prompt reply to my questions. Much appreciated. I’ve got a few edge cases down here on the MS Gulf coast I’ve been testing since 12.3.6 but don’t have the camera and mount to record them. Your rural footage is really shows the skeptics just how far FSD has come, and only on vision! Thanks again for sharing! God bless!
The auto open door feature has finally been added back to our 2023 Refresh Model X with a firmware update (late July 2024)
Thanks very much for your thoughtful channel. I've been following it since well before I bought my first Model X in December 2020. Now I've followed your lead and ordered the new 2024 model. ... just like you upgraded. And your reasons closely align with mine. It didn't hurt that I qualify for the tax credit and will get FSD transferred from my present Model X. I had to compromise to qualify, so my car will be grey (instead of blue and I won't have the new steering yoke). The inside of the car will have the tan seats, which I greatly prefer over the black seats. Considering that my present car is my pride and joy, it is a little amazing that I am upgrading. I needed a little convincing and you provided it.
Wow, now is a great time to pick up a Model X as they have some great incentives. We currently have 15,000 miles on ours's and we love it. Our pervious X's were good cars, but this one is better in every way. From what I understand, the FSD that we are currently using has not been optimized for hardware 4 yet, so the FSD experience in your new car will be similar to your current car. At some point in the future they will release a Hardware 4 version that will take advantage of the higher resolution cameras and faster processor. I'm looking forward to that day. Post back after you get your new car as it will be fun to hear about your experience.
