Starlink Power Requirement, 8 Days in February 2021, and Musk Predicts Performance Improvements.

- How much energy does Starlink consume during the winter? I measured the energy consumed over 8 days in February. The antenna had melted around 24 inches of snow (61 cm). Temperatures ranged from 10 F to 33 F (-12 to 0.5 C)
now this is who starlink is for. Its for rural folk with over charged and under served. god bless!
Indeed, I'm so thankful that this has become available. I do hope that they can bring the cost and energy requirements down a bit over time so that more people can afford it.
Thanks for the very informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m just like you I don’t have cable, all I have is. Spectrum internet. Which is own by charter .
And charter is like Cox which has data cap . I am much looking into going with star link.
Pleased 😀 keep us updated on your streaming tv project .
Just received my Starlink invite! Leaving Spectrum's lefty service!
I just set up a chromecast and subscribed to UA-cam TV and I plan to add Netflix as well. I've been wanting to try out Netflix, but it just wasn't possible with my previous DSL service. So far so good. Now that I'm streaming TV, I hope that Starlink will not set a data cap, or at least offer a plan without a data cap after the beta period is over.
Love it. I just ordered Starlink. Not 100% sure I’ll go through with the reservation, so I’ll be anxiously watching your videos (the Model X ones, too!) to help me make my decision. Like you, I love my X; I’m sure I’ll love the Starlink, too.
Appreciate the feedback. As mentioned in this video, my next leap of faith is to switch to UA-cam TV. This would not have been possible with my DSL. More to come.
@@modelxevfun2858 Same here. Spectrum is our local cable provider and they’ve recently raised their rates. UA-cam TV seems to be the best. I want local channels, and YTTV is the only one that provides PBS as one of their locals.
That 100 watt base load for Starlink could be an issue for some folks that have off the grid power systems. But for the folks with only DSL, marginal cellular access and utility power Starlink looks like a great option.
I was a bit surprised by the power draw as well. I don't know if the power draw will go down in the summer, but I will do a test this spring and compare. If I was off grid, I'd probably turn it off when not is use. I may put mine on a timer to turn off at night when I don't have tow worry about melt snow.
Sweet! Hopefully Starlink can design a smaller dish that can be mobile and used in a tesla. Id like to travel with a Cybertruck and take something like that along. Excited for Starlinks future!
That would be cool!
Smaller dish is probably not possible. Also bigger antenna the better signal. You cannot beat physics. But they could make dish 2.0 thinner to put under hood or something.
Great review, thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks for watching!
I think the volcano mounts are good at the current time but I’d be concerned about the footprint of the mount vs height and size of the disk in high wind areas. Have you considered a small (3ft) tripod mount for your roof? I’m in the Sierras and get high winds. I also live amongst a lot of 120ft Pines. I’m waiting on a 5ft tripod and will add another 5 ft via a mast and the Starlink poll adapter to get the dish high enough to mitigate obstructions. The small tripod mounts are available everywhere for as little as $30.
I have a Wineguard DS2000 mount on its way and I'm hoping I can make it work.
@@modelxevfun2858 Cool, just be aware about the need for the button to lock the position (axially) on the mast. Starlink is offering the proper interface for that but it looks like those are weeks out too. But, you should be able to measure and drill the mast to get a lock if the ID is correct. Good Luck! Let us know how it works.
@@ramosel Will do.
A Starlink pole mount would allow you to mount your Starlink antenna on a 'standard' J mount (like your dish mount) which you can mount on the roof. That combination would give you the additional height you're looking for.
I ordered a J mount today and looking forward to a permanent mount.
How do I get this? I am in the woods could really use this is it expensive I am low income ?
I know they do a Mount that you bolt onto a Poll / antenna Fixture based on other YT Videos Ive seen
My mount took a month to ship.
I decided to drill into Starlinks pole to make a bolt hole for my J mount and it works fine.
Just tighten with Nylon threaded nuts
I paid my deposit to be put on the list to be one of the first in my area (SW Virginia) to receive and test Starlink. My biggest concern is, will there be any guaranteed free replacements parts for any of the equipment if it goes bad?
I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that once the warranty is up (12 months) it will be up to the owner to purchase replacement gear if it goes bad.
@@modelxevfun2858 thank you, it's good to know that there is a 12 month warranty!
You probably can cancel the volcano mount and get the pole mount. There should be plenty of pole type solutions and you just put the pole mount on top.
Thanks for the review. Most everything I've seen about Starlink has been awesome. My only concern is if ole Egon might get greedy and drop a data cap making the network the same as the other satellite ISPs just with better speeds (ie reaching the cap even faster).
Me too. I just dropped my Dish TV service and have switched to UA-cam TV, so I'm going to be using a lot more data than I have in the past. I really hope that they will offer an optional limited data plan at a reduced price to make it more affordable for those who don't need unlimited data
Pole mount is better for snowy regions.
I peaked at 200Mbps and my neighbor got 224Mbps with Starlink
Amazing. I'm glad this option is now available for us.
Great! This only happens one in a hundred or consistently?
@@RogerDiotte I haven't seen those kinds of speeds yet. My speed tests vary quite a bit, and I'm still seeing small periods of outage (11 minutes in the last 12 hours), but this is a beta and this should be expected.
I got 267Mbps / 17.88Mbps at 10:10 PM last night
@@xVertigo101 Really, I've gotten near 190 once in 3 months. Where's your cell area and how far is the ground station from you? Maybe that's what counts with this system? My avg is 80 Meg's down.. Perfectly fine for now as the mandated speed for which or government of Canada set out for rural isolated communities is 50 down 10 up.. So for now I'm above the standard.
Gtreat video!
Thanks!
No issues with obstructions that is for sure
That is for sure, and now that it is mounted on the roof, it should even be better.
Curious to see how you mount it to the satellite mount as I've been thinking the same. I was wondering if u-clamps/bolts would be able to hold it securely to a pole.
Stay tuned, I'll document it on this channel.
L really will not need more then 100-150, so why pay the same as the heavy users???????????????
Thank you for this good review. Can you tell please, how much atm it costs for you the DSL internet in the TV dish (per month)? Sorry for bad english, greetings from Russia.
My Dish Network is TV only and I'm paying $83 per month for a mid level package. My DSL internet is through the phone company and it costs $94 per month. My DSL is advertised at 20 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up, but because my home is distant from their hardware, actual speeds are 12 Mbps down and 750 Kbps up.
@@modelxevfun2858 Thank you kindly for your answer
Hopefully in the summer it goes down to 50w
Yes, it will be interesting to see and I'll be sure to post my results. If it still draws over 100 watts in the summer, I'll probably put mine on a timer so it shuts down during normal sleep hours.
Im not sure what hardware control they have. But it would be nice if it can use only part of radio spectar while it is in not in high demand. Or at least lower power to minimum. Just as in mobile phones. It is way lower power consumption when it is idle. Instead when it is downloading.
Wonder why some people had to pay upfront for the monthly fee
And some people did not?
They just opened up the service for pre orders globally. The demand in higher than the supply so the deposit shows you’re serious about wanting the service.
My Son and myself I’ve ordered one each we were on the list to Beta tester over three months ago just got a notification two weeks ago we both had to pay 800 Canadian upfront which includes 650 for the dish 130 for one months subscription plus shipping and taxes so if not received yet
yeah
Ничего не понимаю, но очень интересно.
