Thanks man, this is helpful. But I'm sort of confused that it can't correctly get the chords from a midi file. Aren't the actual chord names written into the midi file itself?
I'm very close to "Senior" status, but not quite. Am I still allowed to like this video? ;)
TOO FUNNY !!! Actually made me laugh out loud :-)
Where did the melody come from?
Not sure what you're asking but there are better videos I have demonstrating MIDI than this one. This was one of my earliest videos. A lot has changed since then. ua-cam.com/video/HbKVdAVUipQ/v-deo.html
Henry I have studied your videos for several years and have been a BIAB user since 2014 ! Two CD s later and everything I’ve learned has been from your videos and just wanted to say thank you !
You are quite welcome! I’m glad my videos have been useful.
Thanks Henry. A big help
Thanks, Glad to help !
why is my page not changing now...anyone
I have no idea. I would check the updates or contact PG music support.
Great Henry! I learned a lot from this, just the sort of things I need right now. Many Thanks, you're a whizz!! Yes - Life Is Good!!
Glad it was helpful!
Backing Tracks Rule the Day . 10 or so Years ago Tracks were MIDi Big Big Difference since BNB Added Real Tracks . Keep the Senior Videos Coming Henry !
Totally agree !!
I totally agree Henry with the Backing Tracks as a valuable and important part of a show. Let the purist be prudish but as a I no longer have my lead singer who sang in 5 different languages along with my Mandolin and two percussionist. I’ve gone fully in to developing my own show and the difference is amazing including Real Tracks from biab as well as my years of music recording has given me a new sense of possibilities. Thank you Henry for tapping into a vital way older musicians can perform and sound they can be proud of. An audience just wants to see, hear and feel the performance. I also just purchased the Ultra+ pack and man are you right on with that recommendation. Keep em Coming Henry Thanks again, Matthew from California.
Thanks and I agree with you. It makes a huge difference in having a great show.
Fantastic. I've been watching your channel for years, and there's always great stuff. This was really easy to follow and understand. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I have zero ethical concerns about backing tracks. I have never considered myself a “musician”. I am a music producer. I see no difference between bringing live musicians into the studio and recording them playing what I tell them to play or opening up my daw and all my wonderful toys and just constructing it myself. Thanks for the video, Henry.
You're welcome.
Excellent discussion, and very helpful. One key thing not mentioned here, but which I believe is critical, is transparency. If you're using backing tracks, and make it easy for the audience to be aware of that, no problem - everyone is on board and it's all about giving it your all with your live performance. If there's even a hint that you're trying to "pull the wool" over the audience in any way, that can have major repercussions.
Well transparency is kinda true BUT there are tons of bands I've seen where the transparency is not always obvious. Especially when you hear horns in the song and don't see any on stage. I personally have not witnessed any major percussions. I just see the audience enjoying the performance.
Henry- when you triple track your vocals, I’m curious: do you push them a millesecond or three faster and slower than your original vocal track? Do you alter effects on them individually? I’m curious- thanks!
I alter the vocals but do not push them faster or slower. A lot of times I'll sing and octave higher and have it very low in the lead mix. It's subtle but it really makes a difference. I do the same on the low end adding an octave lower on the lead. When I'm lazy I have a vocal plugin that helps with that so I can get there faster.
I know from personal experience a point you brought up Henry. I love working with BIAB and creating songs. What I am not so good at is learning the songs and playing them myself. It's a great way to practice and become a better musician.
It's a great way to become proficient at playing your instrument!
Excellent points and I agree you conclusion is it helps more than it harms.
Thanks Charlie !
Great Talk Henry ,being a chromatic Harmonica ,as good as I am ,the backing is what keeps people listening past 2 or so songs ,A Great singer with out backing would have same problem ,A 2 hour playing with out backing would not last .
Oh I can definitely understand. Being a front man of any kind benefits greatly from backing tracks it the front man does not have an actual band.
Great topic! Here’s my take- if I were going to spend the time and money to rent a studio for the day and hire session musicians, whom I would select based on my musical foundation and the requirements of my personal songs, they would sound very little- probably unnoticeably- different than any REAL real musician I’d pick out of Band in a Box. I do spend time after I’ve birthed a new song to run through lots of REAL DEMO musician tracks, plugging in their real performances to my initial tracks in LOGIC. Only a very few times has the BIAB algorithm produced a “blip” or a “slip”, a “burp” or a “hiccup” I’ve had to mix out, so the Real Tracks are very strong. Of course, I mix and master those tracks in to produce a final song. In other words, I feel I am “hiring musicians” to play my songs virtually just as I would in a studio setting. I do use BIAB Audiophile to get the best mixes possible. So when I make songs, I add vocals and guitar, harmonica and a few percussive lines… and can only say my songs would stink without BIAB backing me. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Agree. Merry Christmas to you and yours !!
Thanks for your gracious help. How to you get those full, professional sounding tracks on BI B?
I would like to credit my mixing skills and also my use of good plug-ins. For example OZone is a very good mastering plug-in and can give your song outstanding quality but you still have to concentrate on your mix to get it close. Also it's not unusual for me to have 10 or so mixes on my songs trying to get it right :-)
How can have the chords play eight note rhythms?
Very difficult in BIAB. You can search for a piano realtrack that plays 8 note rhythms or if you're totally frustrated you can play them yourself through your MIDI keyboard.
Very nice work Henry. This is my Christmas song using BIAB and Cubase. Merry Christmas! ua-cam.com/video/t5L9u7rPKbA/v-deo.htmlsi=qzzxPSKBVcT9QQiI
And thanks for all your work doing this and the pleasure of finding things out.
You're Welcome !
Hi Henry, I see you use the Windows versions of BIAB so have you upgraded to 2025? If there were one thing on my wish-list for BIAB it would be a Europeanised version that's less heavy on the C&W and Praise and more on the traditional styles over here, from Mod to flamenco.
I have not upgraded yet but I can totally agree with your comment on the styles of music. I've stated before that BIAB is great for C&W, old style Jazz, and Praise and they still have not changed much. Personally when I create Disco, Pop, or House style music I do not use BIAB to create those tracks.
Hi Henry, As the holiday season is upon us, I wanted to take a moment to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for all the inspiring content you create-your creativity and dedication truly stand out and make a difference for so many of us. Your videos are not just entertaining; they motivate and inspire, and I deeply appreciate the effort you put into sharing your art and ideas. It’s always a pleasure to follow your journey, and I look forward to seeing more of your incredible work in the coming year. Wishing you joy, creativity, and good health in 2024! Take care and thank you again for being such an inspiration.
Merry Christmas to you as well and Happy New Year. I hope you enjoy the holidays !!
Great cover, Henry! Merry Christmas and thanks for inspiring us all with all of your videos! God bless you man!
Thank you, Merry Christmas, and God bless you too!
Henry ,Very Nice rendition, and Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year to You and Yours
Merry Christmas to you and yours as well.
Nice Harmonies Henry.
Thanks
Dude - you are SO helpful.
Thanks for watching!
Great stuff Henry. Keep em Coming!

Woops Bandlab is a different program from Cakewalk. Bit confusing. You are talking about Cakewalk, not Bandlab. (Cakewalk by the company Bandlab.) Bandlab was their original simplified DAW and they then bought old Sonar from Roland and released it for free with some good development and bug fixes. But development apart from maybe some simple bug fixes are at an end as it competes with their new commercial release of Sonar on subscription.
Your screen at 2:17 shows the two different programs available to download.
I think your band lab out-sound out comes through your room loudspeakers and into the feed, but through your microphone and not out-line? Still the lesson is valid.
It doesn't but the biggest challenge with voice over and playing the track in OBS software is that I have to make it MONO which sucks but I couldn't figure out any other way.
Strange i have recorded bands in real band, completely without bnb. I have added multiple other outside tracks to bnb created songs too. Vocals guitars even a string ensemble. I tried cakewalk, sonar, pro tools, logic, cubebase. And several others always come back to realband. 48 tracks. I recorded a project that used 24 tracks no problem. My interface can send 14 tracks separately into real band at the same time one pass. I guess everyone has their favorites.
I use a lot of loops and a lot of lead and background vocals. I also do Pop and EDM. Just doesn't work for me but like you said to each his own.
Why don't you just use realband, it's band in a box and a daw both together in one software, no need for another daw.
Realband is fine when the music is created in BIAB but I find it severely lacking for supporting other types of music. I create a lot of music outside of BIAB and I find Realband severely lacking when I do that.

what version of BIAB do you have?
Right now I'm on 2024.
Thank you for all things, sir
Thank you and Thanks for watching !
Thanks! A reall great lesson and lot of tricks. Make some more of that type (song from scratch with tricks). Greetings from Europe/Slovenia.
I do lot's of different types of music and I don't do all of it with BIAB. Thanks for watching.
Definitely helps. I haven’t upgraded since 2020 and I think it’s time.
Hope the video helped in your decision making process.
@@henryclarke5407 It did! Thanks again!
It would be nice to see you make the band in a box part fist.
I have other videos on song creation. The focus of this video was to show the integration effort and how you can extend you capabilities outside of the BIAB console.
Thanks, nice tutorial and Song ❤
Thanks for watching.
Thank you, Henry, for another good one!
Thanks for listening
Hi, have you had a chance to check out BIAB 2025 yet? I would appreciate your thoughts before I upgrade.
I haven't received a copy yet and I will make a video once I dig into it and find out if what it offers is good and technically easy to implement.
Thanks for sharing your joy of music with us. Pretty good process as well. I'm inspired to go record.
I'm glad you are inspired!
Hey Henry. I hooked up with Bandlab after watching the video… When I opened it up it looked nothing like what you had on your screen! Do we have to have Cakewalk to have everything you were showing in your video? Maybe I just don’t know how to use BandLab yet? Thx for the video Ed Bentley
Great advice. Us old guys gotta keep learning and growing. Thanks for the encouragement!
That's my goal :-)
Thanks for talking through your process. Interesting how powerful Cakewalk is. I may need to check it out. I think they are going to start charging for it in the future and maybe make it a subscription type service. Appreciate your laid back style. And great song, by the way.
Yes. Cakewalk will likely go subscription based at some point. Glad you liked the song!
Cakewalk will stay free for now however the company Bandlab has taken the software (that was once called Sonar) and released a new version called Sonar under subscription only model (for now). Cakewalk is slated to not receive any further development however Sonar will continue to be developed as a commercial product. The new Sonar is only months into release and most of what they worked on was aesthetic but also an improved more efficient audio engine. Free Cakewalk is still an excellent DAW. Bandlab is a simplified tool developed separately, a bit like Garage Band was to MAC.
@@NathanElleryThanks for the detailed response!
Great video! Very informative. Do you use the regular version of BIAB or the Audiophile version. Love the easy way you walk through the process.
I don't use Audiophile. I really couldn't hear that much of a difference. Besides, the streaming sites compress the audio anyway so I just kinda figured why bother. But I'll leave that decision up to you.
BandLab is online only or can I download it and use it off line?
You lost me with th13 track, but I have to do some repeating viewing to figure it. I mostly kept it simple to 3 or 4 tracks, so I have a lot to learn. Thanks for the info.
Yes it does get more complex with more tracks but it gives you more options.
Thanks Henry!
Thanks for watching.
You got such a great style Henry and great voice, love it.
Wow, thank you!
