First of all the way she looks at him at @1:17 and then says “maybe for you” was so…wow. I get chills every time. Secondly, I know it’s probably stepping over the line a little bit, but I can’t help but look at these intense chemistry moments through the lens of Josh and Sofia. I am an actor myself so I tend to think about what it was like for them as Actors and you can tell that they really do adore each other, even if they just remain friends. Sofia has a way about her that is just…mesmerizing and nobody can convince me that Josh does not see that. She had him wrap around her finger this entire number. There’s probably a fine line for them between friends and romantic love because of how much chemistry they have and all of the work that they had to do together on this show. I respect their relationship so much. I think it is so loving and sweet and I hope that they remain friends forever and who knows, maybe it’ll go further than that one day like it did for Tom and Zendaya. You can tell the love that they have each other in every interview and even more steamy here 😭 those were real looks yall. Plus, if you watch the little rehearsal clip that Tim shared from behind the scenes, they are so cute and giggly with each other maybe even a little bit shy when they are rehearsing this…they go from that to THIS is one take!? Wow.

I love how they Josh went in for another kiss after Sofia laughed and shook her hair that was so cute. You can tell they really love and care for each other 😢❤😭

i always hated how they tried to convince us nini and gina had this close friendship. they didn't. they honestly hardly interacted one-on-one in a positive way. so the whole nini being mad gina didn't tell her about the chiocolates thing is manufactured and silly to me. if anything, she should be more frustrated with kourtney, her bsf, for not telling her (assuming kourtney knew, which based on her reaction, she seemed to).

agree with all especially the second one i just wish we saw more of Ricky's feeling portrayed not so hidden to the point were you cant tell what he feels.

Their story be like: Meeting, Falling in love, Ricky runs away, They fall out, They go their separate ways, Ricky breaks up with Nini, Gina gets with EJ, They patch up their friendship, Ricky realises he has feelings for Gina, They get together, Their past catches up to them, Rickys Redemption in the Rain, Then Ricky shouts that hes gonna love her for the rest of his life.

great video! honestly, i think the fact that s3 had a weekly release made it feel less rushed to me on my initial watch because i had time to sit with the events of each episode before moving on to the next. plus, as somewhat of a casual viewer who wasn't tuned into fandom theories, i had very little hope for rina by the end of s2, so when the first hint was dropped at the end of s3e1 i was ecstatic! then, all the subsequent, albeit glaring in hindsight, rina indicators made s3 soooo fun because i couldn't believe it was actually happening. i also still found myself so pleasantly surprised (more like over the moon) by the end of the s3 finale because i thought it would be too soon for rina to become official but then the time jump solved that! anyway, this is why i wish s4 was also a weekly release to combat how fast paced it was. i also think it could have benefited from introducing some storylines earlier to make them more drawn out even within the short amount of time they had. it always felt like the conflicts or plot points were quickly resolved and then the storyline would quickly move on to the next issue which made s4 a bit clunky. like dani wanting to know everything about ricky kinda going nowhere and mack wanting to fake date gina being shut down in the next episode. speaking of clunkiness, i also might have preferred if the flashbacks were interspersed throughout the season instead of shoved into that single awkward 6th episode lol or at least paced more smoothly; and like you said, i would've liked if ricky's feelings growing from puppy love to love love had more of a buildup for us as viewers. i also really really really wish the chocolates were addressed head on because the way it was handled left me with so many questions like why did it seem like terri didn't even know who ricky was? idk i love rina sm so despite the flaws in the show they're still my otp and my biggest ship win and i always have to cheers to that. btw what do you think about the "i love you too, ricky" in the thanksgiving hat? even though it's a nice callback and full circle moment or whatever, it's always baffling to me to think of s1 gina writing that. i think i would have preferred if she just told him she loved him back in the series finale and the hat stitch said something else, but then again it's hard for me to think of what a better hidden message would've been...

first of all, i want to say this video is so incredibly done and i'm always in awe of your analyses and how you interpret the little details! i wish we would've gotten more insight w/ ricky's pov in s2 because it truly haunts me to this day trying to figure out why ricky did some of the things he did. we can guess all we want, but including a chocolates confirmation in some form would've given more insight into s2 rina. also i completely agree about the pacing feeling so rushed in s3 and 4... it really threw me off with how abrupt it seemed after being so subtle. i was bothered by the whole seemingly unnecessary lily storyline going into s3 too. since the writers clearly put the love triangle front and center in s3, i can see how it felt forced to casual viewers. in s4, there was so much going on with the rina dynamic that it was sometimes hard for me to digest. however, with the timeframe of 8 episodes, i think writers did the best they could. specifically, the fast-paced rina dynamics in s3 and 4 felt so different from s1 and 2, where they was more "slowburn-esque." still, as someone who has been a rina truther for some time, i was just happy to get whatever storyline between them unfolded. never getting over them!

I have such mixed feelings on the second issue, because I totally agree with you that more consistent pacing between S2 and S3 would help more casual viewers or non-Rina shippers see the build towards Rina... but I also have reservations about the alternative, such as their unresolved feelings (particularly Ricky's) being more obvious in S2, or if Gina /didn't/ cut Ricky off, allowing them to continue to interact. One thing I love about the "love triangles" in this show is that they don't include one person being endlessly torn between two others, often ping-ponging between them. Ricky's relationship with Nini didn't work out because they were fundamentally bad for each other, not due to his unresolved feelings for Gina, and likewise, Gina's relationship with EJ couldn't work due to reasons unrelated to Ricky. I guess I'd be concerned that if Ricky's feelings for Gina were made more obvious when he's with Nini, the reasons for their breakup could be obfuscated from the reality that they hold each other back and need to outgrow one another. I also think it was important for Gina to cut her friendship off from Ricky, and I appreciated that she was allowed to truly open herself up to new relationships and fully pursue them. Each time I try to envision an alternate story where there's more moments in S2b to showcase Ricky or Gina's feelings for each other, I keep seeing something similar to what happened with Jim, Pam, and Karen in S3 of The Office. Even after moving to try to honestly move on, Jim still couldn't emotionally leave Pam in the past, and he finally ended things with Karen due to his unresolved feelings for Pam, not because they weren't the best fit. While this did make for good TV, it was still pretty messy, and I find those characters' choices and behaviors less mature than the S2 and S3 storylines in HSMTMTS. There's one scenario I can think of to showcase Ricky's unresolved feelings for Gina in S2b that won't risk them overshadowing the reasons Ricky and Nini already don't work... remove the subplot of him dating Lily (which I /do/ still believe is to hint that he's subconsciously looking for a second chance with Gina, as you speculated previously) and instead, after he's mourned his breakup with Nini, have him realize all he's lost while he was clinging to that relationship, which includes his friendship with Gina. That way Gina still sets her boundaries and moves forward, Ricky still respects said boundaries, and he realizes a little sooner how much Gina meant to him without "jumping from girl to girl" as some claim. I hope I'm making sense.... basically, how S2 played out was important for both Ricky and Gina's characters, and I loved that there were still subtle moments to communicate that Ricky and Gina are being prepared for each other and wouldn't want that to change. However, I also agree that there's a consistency issue between S2 and S3 (and I would add on that there's a framing issue in S1 with Rini) that works against the grander story for Rina.

I think the reason why Ricky was so adamant about listening to Gina is because he felt the same thing she was going through especially because Nini wasn’t there.That’s the same reason why Gina turned to EJ.

I agree the writing went from very subtle in season 2 to on the nose obvious in season 3 that feels very jarring which is why you get people saying it came out of nowhere.

Honestly, the only things wrong with their story are just technical problems. The pacing and the Subtext/Text.

I will be honest, I just thought them bringing it up over and over was a thing they did, like joking about how good Gina is at throwing drinks in people's faces- it feels like joking about embarrassing moments is their thing. But I do agree they don't bring up those jokes up as often as they do this.

Noticing: He doesn't need advice from a "buddy", but he will listen to Gina. Also, when Nini suggests he talk to his mom, he shuts her down. But when Ricky asks Gina if he should talk to his mom despite everything, she says he doesn't have to, and he should just do what he's comfortable with. Leaning into the theme that Ricky is constantly seeking comfort, Nini, his source of comfort, is pushing him out of his bounds, encouraging emotional progression. Gina, the new factor, validates retreating from a threatening situation and taking some time to comfort himself. As a result of this, I believe later that episode he does end up calling his mom again and admitting he misses her.

I honestly feel like part of the reason Nini was so eager to get back with Ricky was because she saw the chemistry between Gina and Ricky. It kinda - to me - like she was holding on to Ricky until she figured out what she wanted to do with her career as an artist. I also LOVE that Ashlynn is the only group member that saw their connection from the beginning. 😂 she was always witnessing these special moments between the two or told before anyone else.
