But when Ricky asks Gina if he should talk to his mom despite everything, she says he doesn't have to, and he should just do what he's comfortable with. Leaning into the theme that Ricky is constantly seeking comfort, Nini, his source of comfort, is pushing him out of his bounds, encouraging emotional progression. Gina, the new factor, validates retreating from a threatening situation and taking some time to comfort himself. As a result of this, I believe later that episode he does end up calling his mom again and admitting he misses her.

i always thought that Nini left him on edge. She was always on his case about something and no matter what he tried to do she wasn't happy. She didn't care about his issues deep down. She just cared about what he was doing in the moment that hurt her. He realized what he did and tried to tell her that many times but she still shut him down again and again. It was GINA that encouraged him and always tried to hear him. This was a slow burn and i'm glad because it was SO satisfactory to see. Gina was the LITERAL Gabriella. Always moving, scared to get attached etc. Gina always had his best interest at heart. And i'm not trying to say that NiNi was all bad but i feel like she checked out a LONG time ago before she maybe even realized it. It was over for her for different reasons (and maybe some of them were good). Honestly they were so toxic with the back and forth and the constant drama. It was good that they let things go.
we just found out that in the original table draft for 1x5, in the car scene, after gina says goodnight to ricky, instead of her kissing him on the cheek as we see, the original plan was for gina to lean in and they KISS ON THE LIPS AAHHHHHHHH, so there must've been some sort of connection in that episode and the ones leading up to it, whether that's a romantic connection or that they feel safe with each other
5:01 That bond for Ricky whether the writer/creator intended it or not to me started with 1x2 Because in a time where Ricky felt unwanted by both his mother and Nini, Gina made him feel wanted by telling him all the things she did to get him to stay, mind you it was all a part of her ‘villainous’ plan lol. But still it impacted Ricky cause here’s a girl that doesn’t know him yet tells him he is wanted as part of the team. And For Gina that bond starts in 1x5 cause she has a wall up because she never stays in places long so she avoids friendships and relationships since she’s always viewed/feels like an outsider, so she chooses to only make big impacts in her performances but this time she encounters someone like her, with home drama which later fuels the bond more because like her Ricky hates change, and like her Ricky adores his mother but feels abandoned by her, like he is secondary in her life, how Gina seems secondary in her mother and brother’s lives. I’m only 5 minutes in and love the video, Thank you!! 😊
One thing i loved abt Ricky is that he wasn’t embarrassed abt the hat Gina made and he genuinely was grateful for it like that’s so cute to me and the fact he was reading over his text before sending but then sent it when miss jenn got his attention, says to me that he cared abt talking to Gina in the right way 19:32
ahh i always love your rina analyses! every video gives me a newfound appreciation for how meticulous and intentional the writing and acting on this show is. your observations are so astute and honestly watching this just made me really happy lol. as for things from other seasons to discuss, maybe touch on gina seemingly feeling guilty when ricky sang kristoff's lullaby to her. i remember initially being surprised by her reaction. ooh also, i know this is beyond the intended scope of this video series, but do you think the chocolates plotline will make an appearance in s4? i thought it was kind of weird that tim confirmed it outside of the show, but knowing how calculated he is i have to assume that served some kind of purpose. anyway, thank you for another lovely video and i can't wait to see what else you point out in part 2 and 3 :)
Thank you! You're so nice. I really hope the chocolates get a reveal in S4, if not to Gina, then to at least the audience. I'd honestly feel kind of neutral on it if it wasn't so clear in hindsight that Tim has been planning it since 2x03. If he never confirms it within the show then it just leaves a lot of loose ends that don't get resolved and that'll drive me crazy lol. The fact that he revealed it on instagram makes me nervous that he won't confirm it on the show cause the shock value is gone and the emotional impact is dulled but I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that he decided to put it in S4 anyway. He clearly was excited enough about it to post it on instagram in the first place so I'm hoping that means it was important enough to him to put in S4.
LET'S GOOOOOO!!! I've been looking forward to these! One more thing that I'll point out is that the first verse of "Just for a Moment" honestly applies more to Gina than it does to Nini. I definitely don't think it's supposed to be Rina-coded since it's written by Josh and Olivia, but Ricky writing "I fell in love / with the only girl who knows what I'm about" for Nini after we the audience witnessed multiple episodes of him connecting with /Gina/ on a far deeper level comes across as Ricky being in denial, haha. Although the rest of the song doesn't communicate a bright future for Rini, either 😅 I also hope you caught the heavy Rina-coding of how 2x09 is structured, too (hint hint 😉). There's also another scene in 2x01 that becomes Rina-coded in 2x03.... I won't give too much else away on that one, but I'm so excited for the next video!
It's crazy how much of season 2 is Rina-coded but only in a way that you'd be able to unlock after season 3 and Ricky's version of the confession. Off the top of my head the only part of 2x01 that becomes Rina-coded in relation to 2x03 is Ricky moving but it's been a while since I've watched S2. Hopefully I'm not missing what you meant 😬. A re-binge of S2 is on my to do list.

Maybe it was just me but ever since the first episode I *knew* Ricky and Gina would end up together and I absolutely *HATED* Nini and Ricky together from the beginning. please say I'm not the only one.
I just finished it and it was totally worth the wait like- i have nothing else to say other than. I caint wait for the next ones and i absolutely love your channel.❤. Oh and the amount of hard work u put into each and everyone of ur vids does not go unnoticed like i could never.
hey! i really enjoy your deep dives into the characters and context we might have missed, its really nice seeing all the subtext layed out like this.. but i do wanna ask if you would consider doing a voice-over, ou even text to speech in the written parts, so its easier to follow along without having to pause to read the text, or so i can do something else while watching your videos (god knows i have the attention spam of a fly).. anyway, keep up the good work! ill be waiting for your analisis on the other seasons as well ;))

I've watched this show like a million times and every time you release a new video I get another idea and I watch the show again and it's always so amazing! I'm really looking forward to the next videos. S2 has so many layers and it's amazing that the more you watch the more you discover/realize new things. I like the scene in Even when/best part where Nini is happy but Ricky looks confused lying in bed and about the messages coming at the same time. I like to think what went through Ricky's head at that moment, like until things were "clarified" he must have thought: how does she know it was me? (The chocolates) And they must have spent quite some time talking about it. And like he does the whole chocolate thing and I'm like wow he spent half of VALENTINES DAY thinking about Gina and doing things for Gina and that includes the texts at the end of the day! And it makes me think just S2 ep5 you said that was probably about the chocolates, so he spent a lot of time thinking about it, wondering what Gina would think of it And he was dating Nini! Season 2 has so many coded moments, I hope you’re able to talk about them all. It could be cool if you included the pre-2x1 FaceTime call as well There’s a 3x8 coded moment I haven’t seen you talk about before, which is Ricky confessing through Kristoff Lullaby. It comes back to Ricky saying sometimes when you can’t express with words, you sing instead (3x5). And now Ricky knows Gina knows and his feelings, and Gina knows that Ricky knows that she knows (which is all visually seen during Everyday and the lottery ticket scene). All there was left was for Gina to confess, which is what led to it a month later. It’s one of the reasons why Gina confessing made much more sense that isn’t talked as often as others. Ricky had already confessed to Gina
I have a feeling the S2 video is going to be very long. There's so much. The facetime calls kind of haunt me because I've managed to find one of them but I've seen in a fan edit somewhere another version that I can't find. It's just like an extra few seconds of Ricky commenting on Gina staying but I have no idea where it came from. I'll definitely be talking about Ricky indirectly confessing and Gina's reaction in the third video. I think Gina's reaction is really interesting because she seems a mix of guilty and doubtful and I think that probably "lessened" the impact of Ricky confessing in that way. It's not the type of confession that clarifies things. It's actually kind of the opposite. Gina's noticing Ricky's feelings for the first time in S3 really but it just confuses things because it could all be in her head and that's what she was sure happened the first time when they left things unsaid. I personally find the lottery ticket scene to be a bit challenging. I've watched it a few dozen times but it's hard for me to tell whether she's jealous or maybe testing him, wanting to see how he reacts to Nini. I've seen some people interpret it as acceptance which I don't see in her expression. Her tone of voice seems on the friendly side but the way her eyes harden just a little afterwards says otherwise. And then the cut back to her looking almost sad after he opens it, is she disappointed with his reaction? Is she upset about Nini popping back into the picture for even something as small as the lottery ticket while she's trying to make sense of Ricky's indirect confession that literally just happened which could bring up bad memories of S1/2. That's probably the scene I'm going to have to really mull over the most in S3.

Ricky and Gina have communicated without talking before, 3x3 being the most recent when they were with Ashlyn. Gina was already thinking (with doubts at the time) that he did have feelings for her. The puzzled face and confused tone when she asks Ricky “are you okay?” after his reaction to her 3x7, it was the first time the whole Summer she thought something was up. The staring during This Is Me. And the biggest one, Ricky defending them to Channing, it’s written all over Gina’s face. Ricky staring at her was him directing trying to confess ‘I have feelings for you’ in other words. Everyday shows the sureness in Gina’s face when she looks at Ricky, something that wasn’t there before. Both knew and they were okay with showing it The lottery ticket scene isn’t jealousy. It can be seen as a test, to be reassured that Nini isn’t the present anymore. But I think it was just Gina telling Ricky it was okay to open it, that he should. She’s already sure about his feelings for her by this point (imo), she wanted Ricky to have that closure with his first love. Which is why you see Gina grow a little smile after. Can’t forget the Rina cue playing during all of this!!
Thanks! I appreciate you always sending me links to the things I can't find. I agree that Ricky during Kristoff's lullaby was wordlessly trying to confess, it's just inherently indirect. He's in the middle of a musical on stage in character singing a choreographed song. He's caught up in a moment and trying to convey what he hasn't been able to say to her. I don't personally think that Gina had inklings about his feelings prior to 3x07 and even then I don't think she gave it much thought. She nervously chuckled at Ricky's voice crack but that was really it. Though their extended staring at the coat check was palpable she wasn't in the mind-frame to really consider it. And then Ricky kind of ruined any inkling those signs might have given her when he lied about Carlos. She could tell he was lying but she doesn't know what he's hiding besides it being connected to WDYKAL. It's obvious to us cause Ricky's told us all season that he likes her and we watched the actual conversation but she doesn't have that insight. I personally interpret Gina's face during the Ricky/Channing confrontation to be more about her feelings than his. To me, it reads as her realizing that Ricky is "showing up" for her. It's the catalyst moment where she realizes that he's actually been showing up all summer and reignites her own feelings to a conscious level which is why she follows him to the stage to watch. When Ricky looks at her she's startled and she looks behind her as if she thinks he could be looking at someone else. Then she looks guilty when she gets caught by EJ because this is exactly what EJ accused her of during the breakup - having feelings for Ricky. In Everyday, I see Ricky and Gina wordlessly trying to communicate. Ricky's trying to be like yep, I still have feelings. Gina is paying attention, she's aware there's something he's trying to tell her and that can be seen through the eye contact but Gina also breaks off the eye contact suddenly and uncomfortably. It seems like she's trying to put the puzzle pieces together in a way that makes sense to her and while EJ is able to put it together (really he's known since 3x03) EJ didn't have an entire arc in S2 that concluded with Gina being convinced Ricky never had feelings for her and she misread the whole situation. Ricky and Gina can communicate without words. Whether Gina trusts herself to draw the correct conclusion to that specific topic after S2 is something else entirely. I don't see a smile in Gina's expression during the lottery ticket scene. I see her mouth twitch but I don't see anything particularly positive in her expression. More pensive. I don't hear the Rina cue in that scene either. I think it just has a similar sound like the music in 2x03 when Gina got the chocolates. They sound reminiscent of the Rina cue but not quite.

They played very brief versions of the cue a few times in the episode: yoga scene, after Portwell's talk, before Kristoff Lullaby, and then after Ricky sees the lottery ticket. we just found out that in the original table draft for 1x5, in the car scene, after gina says goodnight to ricky, instead of her kissing him on the cheek as we see, the original plan was for gina to lean in and they KISS ON THE LIPS AAHHHHHHHH, so there must've been some sort of connection in that episode and the ones leading up to it, whether that's a romantic connection or that they feel safe with each other
After watching s4 this really shows how ricky has always put gina on a higher standard
5:01 That bond for Ricky whether the writer/creator intended it or not to me started with 1x2 Because in a time where Ricky felt unwanted by both his mother and Nini, Gina made him feel wanted by telling him all the things she did to get him to stay, mind you it was all a part of her ‘villainous’ plan lol. But still it impacted Ricky cause here’s a girl that doesn’t know him yet tells him he is wanted as part of the team. And For Gina that bond starts in 1x5 cause she has a wall up because she never stays in places long so she avoids friendships and relationships since she’s always viewed/feels like an outsider, so she chooses to only make big impacts in her performances but this time she encounters someone like her, with home drama which later fuels the bond more because like her Ricky hates change, and like her Ricky adores his mother but feels abandoned by her, like he is secondary in her life, how Gina seems secondary in her mother and brother’s lives. I’m only 5 minutes in and love the video, Thank you!! 😊
One thing i loved abt Ricky is that he wasn’t embarrassed abt the hat Gina made and he genuinely was grateful for it like that’s so cute to me and the fact he was reading over his text before sending but then sent it when miss jenn got his attention, says to me that he cared abt talking to Gina in the right way 19:32

ahh i always love your rina analyses! every video gives me a newfound appreciation for how meticulous and intentional the writing and acting on this show is. your observations are so astute and honestly watching this just made me really happy lol. as for things from other seasons to discuss, maybe touch on gina seemingly feeling guilty when ricky sang kristoff's lullaby to her. i remember initially being surprised by her reaction. ooh also, i know this is beyond the intended scope of this video series, but do you think the chocolates plotline will make an appearance in s4? i thought it was kind of weird that tim confirmed it outside of the show, but knowing how calculated he is i have to assume that served some kind of purpose. anyway, thank you for another lovely video and i can't wait to see what else you point out in part 2 and 3 :)
Thank you! You're so nice. I really hope the chocolates get a reveal in S4, if not to Gina, then to at least the audience. I'd honestly feel kind of neutral on it if it wasn't so clear in hindsight that Tim has been planning it since 2x03. If he never confirms it within the show then it just leaves a lot of loose ends that don't get resolved and that'll drive me crazy lol. The fact that he revealed it on instagram makes me nervous that he won't confirm it on the show cause the shock value is gone and the emotional impact is dulled but I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that he decided to put it in S4 anyway. He clearly was excited enough about it to post it on instagram in the first place so I'm hoping that means it was important enough to him to put in S4.

LET'S GOOOOOO!!! I've been looking forward to these! One more thing that I'll point out is that the first verse of "Just for a Moment" honestly applies more to Gina than it does to Nini. I definitely don't think it's supposed to be Rina-coded since it's written by Josh and Olivia, but Ricky writing "I fell in love / with the only girl who knows what I'm about" for Nini after we the audience witnessed multiple episodes of him connecting with /Gina/ on a far deeper level comes across as Ricky being in denial, haha. Although the rest of the song doesn't communicate a bright future for Rini, either 😅
I also hope you caught the heavy Rina-coding of how 2x09 is structured, too (hint hint 😉). There's also another scene in 2x01 that becomes Rina-coded in 2x03.... I won't give too much else away on that one, but I'm so excited for the next video!
It's crazy how much of season 2 is Rina-coded but only in a way that you'd be able to unlock after season 3 and Ricky's version of the confession. Off the top of my head the only part of 2x01 that becomes Rina-coded in relation to 2x03 is Ricky moving but it's been a while since I've watched S2. Hopefully I'm not missing what you meant 😬. A re-binge of S2 is on my to do list.

I've watched this show like a million times and every time you release a new video I get another idea and I watch the show again and it's always so amazing! I'm really looking forward to the next videos. S2 has so many layers and it's amazing that the more you watch the more you discover/realize new things. I like the scene in Even when/best part where Nini is happy but Ricky looks confused lying in bed and about the messages coming at the same time. I like to think what went through Ricky's head at that moment, like until things were "clarified" he must have thought: how does she know it was me? (The chocolates) And they must have spent quite some time talking about it. And like he does the whole chocolate thing and I'm like wow he spent half of VALENTINES DAY thinking about Gina and doing things for Gina and that includes the texts at the end of the day! And it makes me think just S2 ep5 you said that was probably about the chocolates, so he spent a lot of time thinking about it, wondering what Gina would think of it And he was dating Nini! Season 2 has so many coded moments, I hope you’re able to talk about them all. It could be cool if you included the pre-2x1 FaceTime call as well
There’s a 3x8 coded moment I haven’t seen you talk about before, which is Ricky confessing through Kristoff Lullaby. It comes back to Ricky saying sometimes when you can’t express with words, you sing instead (3x5). And now Ricky knows Gina knows and his feelings, and Gina knows that Ricky knows that she knows (which is all visually seen during Everyday and the lottery ticket scene). All there was left was for Gina to confess, which is what led to it a month later. It’s one of the reasons why Gina confessing made much more sense that isn’t talked as often as others. Ricky had already confessed to Gina
I have a feeling the S2 video is going to be very long. There's so much. The facetime calls kind of haunt me because I've managed to find one of them but I've seen in a fan edit somewhere another version that I can't find. It's just like an extra few seconds of Ricky commenting on Gina staying but I have no idea where it came from. I'll definitely be talking about Ricky indirectly confessing and Gina's reaction in the third video. I think Gina's reaction is really interesting because she seems a mix of guilty and doubtful and I think that probably "lessened" the impact of Ricky confessing in that way. It's not the type of confession that clarifies things. It's actually kind of the opposite. Gina's noticing Ricky's feelings for the first time in S3 really but it just confuses things because it could all be in her head and that's what she was sure happened the first time when they left things unsaid.
I personally find the lottery ticket scene to be a bit challenging. I've watched it a few dozen times but it's hard for me to tell whether she's jealous or maybe testing him, wanting to see how he reacts to Nini. I've seen some people interpret it as acceptance which I don't see in her expression. Her tone of voice seems on the friendly side but the way her eyes harden just a little afterwards says otherwise. And then the cut back to her looking almost sad after he opens it, is she disappointed with his reaction? Is she upset about Nini popping back into the picture for even something as small as the lottery ticket while she's trying to make sense of Ricky's indirect confession that literally just happened which could bring up bad memories of S1/2. That's probably the scene I'm going to have to really mull over the most in S3.

Kristoff Lullaby completely clarified everything for Gina imo, I mean it even did for EJ. Ricky and Gina have communicated without talking before, 3x3 being the most recent when they were with Ashlyn. Gina was already thinking (with doubts at the time) that he did have feelings for her. The puzzled face and confused tone when she asks Ricky “are you okay?” after his reaction to her 3x7, it was the first time the whole Summer she thought something was up. The staring during This Is Me. And the biggest one, Ricky defending them to Channing, it’s written all over Gina’s face. Ricky staring at her was him directing trying to confess ‘I have feelings for you’ in other words. Everyday shows the sureness in Gina’s face when she looks at Ricky, something that wasn’t there before. Both knew and they were okay with showing it
The lottery ticket scene isn’t jealousy. It can be seen as a test, to be reassured that Nini isn’t the present anymore. But I think it was just Gina telling Ricky it was okay to open it, that he should. She’s already sure about his feelings for her by this point (imo), she wanted Ricky to have that closure with his first love. Which is why you see Gina grow a little smile after. Can’t forget the Rina cue playing during all of this!!

I agree that Ricky during Kristoff's lullaby was wordlessly trying to confess, it's just inherently indirect. He's in the middle of a musical on stage in character singing a choreographed song. He's caught up in a moment and trying to convey what he hasn't been able to say to her. I don't personally think that Gina had inklings about his feelings prior to 3x07 and even then I don't think she gave it much thought. She nervously chuckled at Ricky's voice crack but that was really it. Though their extended staring at the coat check was palpable she wasn't in the mind-frame to really consider it. And then Ricky kind of ruined any inkling those signs might have given her when he lied about Carlos. She could tell he was lying but she doesn't know what he's hiding besides it being connected to WDYKAL. It's obvious to us cause Ricky's told us all season that he likes her and we watched the actual conversation but she doesn't have that insight. I personally interpret Gina's face during the Ricky/Channing confrontation to be more about her feelings than his. To me, it reads as her realizing that Ricky is "showing up" for her. It's the catalyst moment where she realizes that he's actually been showing up all summer and reignites her own feelings to a conscious level which is why she follows him to the stage to watch. When Ricky looks at her she's startled and she looks behind her as if she thinks he could be looking at someone else. Then she looks guilty when she gets caught by EJ because this is exactly what EJ accused her of during the breakup - having feelings for Ricky. In Everyday, I see Ricky and Gina wordlessly trying to communicate. Ricky's trying to be like yep, I still have feelings. Gina is paying attention, she's aware there's something he's trying to tell her and that can be seen through the eye contact but Gina also breaks off the eye contact suddenly and uncomfortably. It seems like she's trying to put the puzzle pieces together in a way that makes sense to her and while EJ is able to put it together (really he's known since 3x03) EJ didn't have an entire arc in S2 that concluded with Gina being convinced Ricky never had feelings for her and she misread the whole situation. Ricky and Gina can communicate without words. Whether Gina trusts herself to draw the correct conclusion to that specific topic after S2 is something else entirely.
I don't see a smile in Gina's expression during the lottery ticket scene. I see her mouth twitch but I don't see anything particularly positive in her expression. More pensive. I don't hear the Rina cue in that scene either. I think it just has a similar sound like the music in 2x03 when Gina got the chocolates. They sound reminiscent of the Rina cue but not quite.
@@multi--edits I double checked just now, I'm very sure it was the Rina cue (4 notes to be exact). They played very brief versions of the cue a few times in the episode: yoga scene, after Portwell's talk, before Kristoff Lullaby, and then after Ricky sees the lottery ticket. They're all alternate versions 😅
