Finding Seashells at Low Tide | Money Cowrie & Giant Hairy Triton #shelling #shells
Super moon, super low (and high) tides! I wasn't sure what I'd find though; it's the school holidays... most kids and families come to the beach to enjoy some time in the sun, but they also love to collect shells as much as I do. I hope they found some good ones, because I sure got some great ones after they left for lunch!! That Money Cowrie really put a smile on my face. Thanks for watching!!
Let me know which ones were your favourites ;D and if you enjoyed this and want to see more shell finding videos, I'd appreciate a like or a comment. I read all of them and try to reply when I can. You have no idea how much of a smile you guys put on my face. Thanks everyone!

Here's some useful links for local shellers:
Shells of SE Queensland: www.seqshells.com/seqmarine.php
(Some listings have multiple variations of a single shell species)

(Check out the illustrations or "plates" to try and match your finds)
Links for less local folks...
Check out the shell families on Femorale, it's a wonderful resource:

(but doesn't include location information, so might lead to mis-identifications)
You can join this Facebook group for ID advice, just snap a photo and post it:

You can also try the Conchology website, but it's a little harder to use:

Oh no, they're all scientific names? No worries, just type the scientific name
into the Queensland Museum Network database. It might have a common name listed!

Sometimes, one day of minis isn't enough... so this time, I went back for a second go! It's not often that I get so lucky with BOTH the shore and the rockpools! Wow, what a big trip filled with amazing shells in stunning condition. So many wentletraps to find, so many glossy cowries, and that spondylus at the end was really amazing too! In the end, I think just about ever shell I picked up was the favourite...there were just too many nice ones to choose from!! Thank you so much f...

Good morning, it was an early shelling adventure this time! I found wentletraps and cowries as well; I found several uncommon cowries in absolutely lovely condition! Limpets, moon snails, microshells, wentletraps, and of course the top favourite for the day; a Red-lined Bubble shell, how exciting! Looking back at this, I think my mouth hadn't woken up to my brains thoughts... sorry if I sound a...

Thank you for watching despite all of the wind noise! I didn't mention it in the video, but being in that amount of windy without respite was more miserable than I expected... but still, not the worse experience while shelling~ I found a heap of amazing, fresh, and joined bivalves today; some I had no collected like that before. Just amazing! Thanks again for watching! My biggest Paper Bubble: ...

So, so windy!! The beaches were a little picked over (mostly be me and a few other dedicated shellers ;D) so it was either the freshest shells or broken ones. In the end, it was really quality over quantity! There were some lovely shells in this bunch, including a little Textile Cone and a lovely Magnificent Volute. Thanks for watching! It was a week of super low tides, and everyone knew it; I think the rock pools were getting thoroughly picked through... but I still got some of the loveliest finds from places that hadn't seen people walk through them yet! Super low tide this time is about 0.1m, but with the gentle, calm waves, it felt even lower. Lots of usually dangerous or inaccessible rock pools were opened up, and wow, I found some lovely surprises! Actually, the most surprising was all of the rare and hard to come by minis on the sand... I wasn't expecting that with the extreme tides this week! Thanks for watching~ Let me know which ones we...

Thankfully, the fog dissipated as I went into the mangroves... but it really is quiet and creepy in there!! I found so much though, and had a fantastic day. The zebra volutes are pretty lovely. I really like the juvenile shells. The hairy is a good size. Thank you for another wonderful shelling adventure. It is nice to see the live critters as well. G'day Jane 👋🏻🐚 Oh nice!! I didn't realize there were Arabians up there, I figured there would be the same shells as the mudflats in Yeppoon. Awesome, I wish I had've stopped there on my way back from Yeppoon a few months ago...I was torn between Tannum Sands and Woodgate. I decided on checking out Woodgate because if it was good, I'd be able to say trip to there. Unfortunately, it was not so good for shells 😅 nice little town, but not for shelling. Thanks for the info, it definitely a spot that I'll check out someday. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Wait, I’m Aussie. It’s illegal to take shells or sand or anything from beaches

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks 3 дні тому

      Hey Fi 👋🏻🐚 Oh no, you'd better arrest all of the four year old kids that pick up a shell souvenir on their school holidays 😂 I'll stop joking around now 😉 I don't know why you think it's illegal, or who told you that it is, but I can assure you that it's not illegal to take shells from most places around Australia. It's changes from state to state, and some areas are classed as "green zones" where fishing and shelling are illegal (small patches of some coastal areas, but the biggest is naturally the GBR). National parks don't allow for shell collections, but that also changes from state to state depending on the fisheries regulations; it's actually legal to collect shells from national parks in Queensland, though I don't think so in all other states 🤔 but I'd have to look into it. This is info I was given by a local national park worker here in Queensland, mind you. Overall, the recreational collection of empty shells is allowed almost everywhere other than those places, and certainly in the places where I collect from. So, next time you go to the beach, don't feel guilty for collecting a shell that you like, it's perfectly fine and acceptable ☺️ and if you're still unsure, you can call your state's fisheries department for more info (their website is a mess, at least for Qld, so you're better off talking to a real person for the answers). Thanks for watching 😁

That's still MASSIVE) is in NSW, I have never been able to find out what the bag or weight limit is for shells in Qld. Port Macquarie said that, huh? I looked online and don't see any Marine Parks there, though there are some in other sections of the NSW coastline. More info at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/marine-protected-areas/marine-parks NSW has plenty of great shelling places! Some areas of Woolgoolga (I think parts are no collection zones, but others are totally fine) Hastings Point, Coff's Harbour or areas to the north of it, Yamba, these are just some places I've heard of for shelling, but I haven't visited them yet. Lots of areas in Northern NSW have wonderful shells and cowries. If you ever come to Qld to go shelling, then look at Hervey Bay and the Sunshine Coast; you can always send me a message if you want some local pointers to some safe collecting places 🐚 live your best life!!

    Hello 👋🏼 Maddie! Just am so far behind with your videos, lol 😆 The 12:12 Donkey is a favorite today. Really gem shell.. The Yellow Toothed Cowries are on fire today! So many nice looking ones.. Wow! What a pretty Lynx Cowry 😍 Love the spots! 😂 I think you startled Mr. Crabs in the Shouldered Triton.. 😆 Very nice Cat Cowry 🤩 The Gaudy Dog Welk is another favorite..Adorable little shell. Thank you for the fun hunt my friend!!! TTFN 👋🏼 ❤

The Donkey does deserve to be a favourite 🦓 it's just too cute! Same with the Lynx and Cat Cowries...gosh, they're either named after animals or food, aren't they?? Haha, those Shouldered Triton; it was all I could do to not drop or throw it away in surprise 🤣😅 the crab sure has a nice home 🦀 Thank you so much for watching 🥰

      G'day Annie 👋🏻🏖️ I felt like a super nerd saying that, because it reminded me of the Pokemon games 😅 I, even as an adult, do still like those games from my childhood...it might be why I like "catching" all of the shells 🐚 ahhh don't mind me. Hehe, speaking of goodly sized, that Sundial was large for the species 🤩 gotta love the giant mini shells, as much as that sounds like an oxymoronic term 😁 the little Bird Cardita is a cute too. As always, thank you so much for watching the warm adventures 🥰

      G'day Green Thumb Gardener 👋🏻☘️❤️ Hehe, I think if you sit on the sand and go into the "zen state" then you will start to see the shell shapes more against the sand texture 😁 the paper figs was a nice larger one on a day like this, but that Cat Cowrie was a bit cuter 🐈 Thank you so much for watching 🥰

    Good morning, Maddie I could not commit on the 2 day shelling adventure on the site. I can on this one. Wow, again!! There was a good amount of different kinds of limpits, the cowries from being very young to adults, the mini sand dollars love them, the bloched nerites and are lovely, the Rosie spindle was a nice surprise. The two different sundials are very nice, i also liked the bubble shells, the oyster shells were very unique. Love the colors of lace coral. Again I am sorry to respond on this lovely triton shell cleaning. I rest my phone yesterday and it will work about every other time I like something it will not let me respond. I watch cat and dog videos. Thank you for another wonderful shelling adventure. Thank you Maddie and have a lovely day.

The different sundials were a nice find, and the larger pearl oyster too 🤩 Ohh and you're the second person to mention how interesting it was to see the different cowrie growth stages...I should try to do that more often if the opportunity presents itself 🤔 seeing the differences is really interesting and informative 😲 Thank you so much for watching the big adventure 🥰

      G'day Trudy 👋🏻💖 There was quite a lot of shells in this one from two days of shelling 🤩 been doing a lot of beach trips lately, so have yielded more shells than others; I have to remind myself to show the shells that I might not usually be interested in personally. Summer here starts on December 1. We are already in spring, it started on the first of the month for us... technically, anyway 😅 that's just how we do it here. Thanks for watching 🥰

    Hello Maddie 🌊 The cute discrepant venus, the pearl oyster, the radial sundial, and the lettered mitre, all get special mentions from me today. My favourites of the video are the eroded cowrie duo. It is really cool seeing mature and juvenile displayed side by side.

      G'day Oceanluvn Gal 👋🏻🌊💖 That little discrepant Venus was a nice contract to the big pearl oyster. The sundials are a wonderful mention, but gosh, you have reminded me that I forgot to mention that Lettered Mitre - I wanted it to be a favourite, but I overlooked where I put it at the end (it was way at the top tucked in behind something). Wow, the top favourite is the big adult Eroded Cowrie, and the sub-adult Eroded Cowrie 😲 it was nice to see a comparison of growth states, wasn't it 🤩 Thank you so much for watching 🥰

    hi maddie ! your videos are so interesting....a little science and lots of marine beauty. Quick question....what is the orange spiraled shell in the back of your display to the left of the big commercial scallop ? it doesnt look like a mitre... I think you found it off camera. the years of learning shell names has been fun, though i'm in n. michigan and only find small zebra mussel shells and fresh water clams. A few snails too. thanks !

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks 3 дні тому

      G'day Marcy 👋🏻🏖️ Hello to you in Michigan, thank you for joining me for so long 😲 and learning the names with me, I feel like it's been a process for everyone; viewers and myself. Hehe, I thought my videos are more able bumbling around and saying the occasional nerd stuff 😂 I'm thiiiiis close to renaming the channel as "Shell Nerd" 🤓 I'm not even kidding, I've been thinking of changing the channel name more and more lately, ahhh... Oh!!! The orange swirly shell, I know the one you're talking about; it was a last minute decision to cut that one from the video because I thought the episode was running for too long, and it is a common shell. It's actually a very, very large sized pheasant shell like what I usually find and display around the edges of the display in many episodes. Perhaps I should have left it in after all, it was much larger than usual for this species, so it was interesting in its own way 😅 of I ever restart making the outtakes videos on Facebook, then I'll put it there eventually, though I'm about 40 episodes behind on that endeavor. Ohh before I get sidetracked on another tangent, what kind of snails do you find? I'm assuming land or fresh water snails; do you ever find those big mystery/apple snails? They're super cool too!! Thank you so much for watching 🥰

      @@SandCoffeeRocks hi again maddie ! thanks for your reply. I'm a shell nerd too, but with A LOT less shell variety. the snail species I find on the beach of this inland fresh water lake (ancient glacial) is the St. Lawrence pondsnail....1/2 inch long and usually bleached white. the invasive zebra mussels are one inch or less and have the coloring of a turkey wing before the sun bleaches them white. The freshwater clams are 3 inches or less, elong- gated, flat, and have beautiful nacre inside. I've actually been to Hervey Bay and found a 1/2 Propeller Arc and a Hercules Club (mud) Whelk.....I should have walked further down towards the mangroves ! pleaseeee continue to be your best shell 🐚 nerd self.....you have many fans.

      I forgot to say that Pheasant shell was gorgeous and huuuuge !! I looked up the snail from Crystal Lake (near Traverse City, Michigan) and it's a Stagnicola Emarginata....looks like a small fresh water Periwinkle. thanks for all you do ! I also subscribe to SWF Beach Life and she collects on the gulf of Mexico in central Florida and Sanibel Island (check out the Sunray Venus Clams and small Wentletraps).
