  • This time the treasure wasn't only the seashells, but also a spearfishing spear! I will never use it, but it seemed like a waste to just throw it out... and now I have no idea what to do with it? Oh well, it's more junk for the garage now! Thanks for watching!

    Good morning, Maddie
    You found amazing shells today. The drupe, worm, and music cones are all beautiful. The Nerites are beautiful. Loved seeing the live critters. The crab was just too cute. Thank you for another wonderful shelling adventure. I hope you have a great day, Maddie

      G'day Toni 👋🏼🌊❤ This one was a really fun adventure! I found a lot of live creatures (and beach junk) to even out the shell finds... it was a little slow at times! Still, I was super happy with the tuban, drupe, cowries, nerite, and cones. I hope you are doing well today. Take care of yourself, and thank you so much for watching ❤ and for waiting for my very slow reply this past week!

    Good Morning Maddie! Always a great way to start my day. Love exploring with you. Thank you for sharing the live critters with us. Beautiful Rose Petal snail, just amazing looking.! New shelling goal- go down under and go shelling with Maddie! What fun that would be. Finding cowries and cones would be absolutely wonderful. And other shells, too! 🐚😀

I hope you're having a great start to your weekend, and thank you so much for watching ❤

    Cool video today! 🎉 always love the sea life. The fire worm 🪱 freaked me out. 😬 The last snakehead cowrie was gorgeous. Love the orange drupe 🍊 and military turban. My favorite today was the operculum. You favor your nerites and I favor the operculums. 😂 We like what we like! Thank you Maddie! 🥰🥰🥰

      G'day Pam 👋🏻💖 Yeah that Fireworm is bad news; I can't understand how the majority of people think that it's a good idea to walk around the rock pools with bare feet 😱 imagine standing on that? Thankfully, there are a lot of other much nicer things to see in the rock pools as well 😁 Haha, yesss you do love the Operculums! I think they would make great jewellery pieces, is that why you like them so much? As always Pam, thank you so much for watching 🥰

    Hi Maddie, Mr Crabbes!😊 That was a beautiful bubble 🐌. Oh yes the stick of destiny will be very useful encouraging shells out from under rocks. Love a drupe. Some very nice snake head cowries. Yes, mr bristle worm needs to go back in his hole😮.
    The military turban was a nice specimen.
    I can’t choose between the drupe and the military turban as my favourite.
    Lovely display as usual, thank you Maddie. ❤xxxx

Need something to bat away those fire worms! As for a favorite; pick both shells! Oh Maddie, that Rose Petal Snail…was SOOOOO beautiful! Just WOW. Thx for sharing that-it made my evening seeing that beautiful critter of Gods. I think those and the Flamingo Tongues alive are just stellar! The underwater foliage at 6:31 was so beautiful! The worm guy was freaky-good heavens sticking your hand in those rocks was freaky after seeing that lol. Loved that live one with the purple aperture 😍! Wonderful shells.

      G'day Roxann 👋🏼🌊 I was legit freaked out when the Rose Petal Snail was swept away in that gentle wave - they are so delicate! I was glad to see that it was fine though; it's such a beautiful and lucky creature to find in the rock pools. Oh wow, I should check up with the Flamingo Tongues look like alive as well, I bet they're gorgeous. Also, do you get anything like those Bristle Fireworms over in the USA? My friend, Mr Sheller, touched one once; he said the bristles broke off in his hand like splinters, but kept shattering when he tried to removed them. Painful, and festered up real bad. Not sure when it happened, but the memory has stuck with him for all this time 😮 Don't touch strange new things... especially if they're in Australia 😂 Ahhh anyhoo! I'm really glad that you enjoyed seeing the creatures and the flora as well! Thank you so much for watching ❤

      @@SandCoffeeRocks I don’t think I’ve heard of anything like those fire worms in Florida- but I’m sure there’s something creepy out there! The closest thing I’ve ever come to was like a snake looking eel thing once in the rock pools at MacArthur in Palm Beach. I hear you on that one-I’m not touching a thing that I don’t know about!! Poor Mr. Sheller!! Mercy 😱 I’ve heard of a stinging plant called “fire grass” that will slap or wrap around whatever gets near it and sting to the point of needing medical attention my mom was telling me about that plant in Guyana 🇬🇾

      G'day Jas 👋🏻💖 Thank you so, so much 🎉 I was expecting more shells to wash up (or be eaten by octopuses) for the winter so the videos have been a little smaller at the home lately. I'm really glad that you still like them; I always hope to make something entertaining or interesting if I can! In other news: I was chatting to my friend Mr Sheller (we were both looking around at a shell show in a place called Yeppoon this weekend), and he's actually touched a bristle fireworm!! He said it was absolutely awful and painful; the bristles shatter and get stuck in your fingers...I didn't know that, I just though they were fluffy, but toxic, things 😅 poor fella! I should have some longer videos coming up soon with some new but windy beaches to look forward to 😉 Thanks for watching 🥰 and once again, thank you so, so much for your support 🙏🏻❤️

    G'day Maddie! You are very brave to spend so much time shelling where so many critters can harm, if not kill, you...cones, octopuses, jellyfish, eels, and now we learn of bristle fire worms. ☠️ 😱 After braving those dangers, you deserve all the lovely shells you find! The live rose petal and spindle whelk were gorgeous. As for those you collected, I am always hard-pressed to name a favorite; they are all so wonderful and exotic for me. I think the zebra volutes are very elegant and the blue sand snail and double-banded moon snail were especially nice. The anticipation and excitement for my visit to Australia in September and October grows with each new episode you publish! Thanks so much for filming! Regards from Jan in land-locked Austria.

      G'day Jan 👋🏻💖 Hahahahaaaaa I think there are a lot of crazy critters and animals everywhere, so what's one more to add to the bunch?? Also, that's once of the reason why I'll always wear water shoes while shelling... I can't believe how many people go bare foot with things like fireworms and cone snails and so many other nasties. And like you said, for all of the scary stuff, there are also wonders like the Rose Petal Snails and the beautiful shells, of course. Also, between you and me, the shells here still feel exotic to me too?? I've only been shelling for 2 years, but they still seem like things that should be from an alien planet; they're too cool for Earth! Ohhhh VERY EXCITING!! Where abouts in Australia are you visiting, if you don't mind me asking? I think you might have mentioned it in broad stroked before, but I can shamelessly say that I have forgotten for right now... Ok, a little shamefully, sorry about that. As always Jan, thank you so, so much for watching ❤

      Hi again! Our trip to Australia includes stays in: Darwin (hopefully with time to hunt for a few shells), Kakadu National Park, Alice Springs and Uluru (probably not too many shells there), just one night at the Gold Coast, Lamington National Park, Mooloolaba (for a couple of days shelling at Point Cartwright and surrounds), Hervey Bay (maybe a couple of brief possibilities to do some shelling), Fraser Island, Brisbane (not at the beach), and 12 nights in Melbourne (visiting our son, who is doing a 3-year post doctorate position at the Uni. of Melbourne). I'm not sure we will get to a beach while in Melbourne, although, after seeing the shells you were sent from that area, I would love to include some shelling there as well. Once-in-a-while, I must allocate some time to other activities with my hubby, who is not as passionate about shelling as I am. However, he loves walking the beaches while I hunt for shells, so things usually work out well. We are staying at Mooloolaba and Hervey Bay so I can visit some of your standard shelling locations. I will be sure to wear shoes! Perhaps we will run across each other, that would really be something!

    Can you share with us the books you use as reference?

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  2 місяці тому

      G'day Natalia 👋🏻🏖️ Good question! For me, it's mostly a few shell books and websites that focus on my region in the world. I don't know where you live, but if you're in Australia, then maybe you will find this useful: ua-cam.com/video/aZ_gKiE-O3o/v-deo.html I go through my process for how I identify my seashells (the description in that video also has all the useful website links that I use). Since then, I have some across a few more shell books that I can recommend as useful resources for identifying cowries (mostly in Australia and Indo-Pacific areas) which includes: 2002 Sea Shells by Neville Coleman. A bit expensive. If you actually live around the east coast of Australia, I can also recommend: Cowries of New South Wales by David Tarrant. I don't own this book, but I friend let me flip through their copy. I was quite impressed with it because it shows multiple examples of how each cowrie species of NSW (and surrounding states) can look with different patterns, as well as what their worn-away appearance is like; usually different than their more fresh appearance 😲 it's was a really informative book, though also a little pricy. So far, I'm doing well with sticking to my Field Guide to Australian Gastropods that I show in the video I mentioned above, as well as the useful websites in that same video. Again, it probably won't help much if you're not Australian and beachcombing these areas. If you have more specific questions that I might be able to help with, then feel free to ask. Thanks for watching 🥰

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  2 місяці тому

      Oh, I almost forgot. Most, if not all, of these books won't tell you the English/common name of the shell. For that, I make sure I have the most up-to-date scientific name (because they change often enough...) and pop it into my state's museum network site here: collections.qm.qld.gov.au/objects?query=Mauritia+arabica You can click on a listing here, and see that the "common name" section says that it's an Arabian Cowrie!! If a scientific name has a listing, it oftentimes will have a common name too! If not, then I try Google, which usually brings me to a website like iNaturalist. If that also doesn't have a common name, then I will translate the scientific/latin name, and make a decision on what to use for the English name for my videos. Hope that helps as well!
