Camper Trailer Makeover Reveals Hidden Problems | Vintage Bigfoot B19 Fiberglass Camper Renovation
(EP11) We wrap up refurbishing the exterior of the camper to make it road worthy and immediately took it for a test. We discovered our suspension was in need of new axle springs and there was a nasty crack on the fiberglass shell that the previous owner masked. In this episode we wire the electrical brakes, the breakaway battery, install a longer 7 pin connection cable with a junction box, weld together the spare tire carrier mount, repair the broken fiberglass shell, gelcoat, buff to a bright sheen the propane fiberglass cover, install new elastic draw latches, chains, leveling jacks, accessories and more! We got the furnace to work for our night stay for New Years at our family get together which was surprising that we didn't have to do anything to it! Next up us our electrical upgrades for going off grid!
We love our 1985 Bigfoot B19 trailer, it has the awesome 80's vibe and we hope to make further videos showing our progress! If you are just a tuning in there are other episodes that show our progress and some good visual tips for those Bigfoot and RV Trailer lovers!
Little background, we bought the camper last year and it was essentially sitting for 16 years under a dirt carport in Oregon and it was being swallowed by thorny vines back into the earth!

    Im wondering if you replaced the weatherstriping on your door? If so could you share the details of the type/shape/size? I have found a large leak coming in at the bottom of the door frame. I will remove the door but not sure what I will find.

    Im so blown away😮with how much is in this video...I just bought a old fiberglass trailer and so figured I'd start looking at repairing it, and this one video has shown me that I got no business buying an old fiberglass trailer😂😂😂😂I have really enjoyed watching the whole series, the frame, etc etc....my problem is I don't have a manufacturer to contact as they no longer make Beachcombers anymore, so will have to look into where does one buy these supplies...enjoy your trailer, just Wowzers❤❤❤

    Your black plastic "jack stands" are bed risers, just in case you wanted to know. Thank you for this series of videos. I love seeing Bigfoot campers get restored. I've heard of people who restore racing stripes for cars, I've wondered if they could possibly do the same for RV decals.

    • @b19sleeper9
      @b19sleeper9 5 місяців тому

      Thank you for letting us know abou those bed risers! we had no idea but knew they where way cheaper than the official rv blocks and for stabilizers they work well. That could be an option and we will restore the front and rear decal since they are the most damaged.

      Thank you for the kind words ☺️. So since part of our style is off grid camping, we are updating the electrical system with new lithium power bank, inverter, and solar panels. It allows us to not be limited of the luxuries of power to just the RV hook up sites. We took it camping and already are excited more than ever. We are currently installing all that. 💪

      So I had success refurbishing the decals on our previous BF truck camper via painting them actually and they came our looking original. Our side decals are good but our rear and front camper decals are in rough shaping too. I can do a video on making them look like new again after our electrical upgrade.

    • @b19sleeper9
      @b19sleeper9 6 місяців тому

      Thanks! So the original ridge was a 3-way fridge and it leak ammonia and the one we installed is a modern 12-volt fridge. We wanted the bigger storage volume and since we are upgrading our electrical system with a lithium power bank/solar panels, we can make the switch.

    Did you keep the original slide out rails for the drawers, or did you replace those?

    • @b19sleeper9
      @b19sleeper9 6 місяців тому

      So we only had to remove one drawer for the fridge retrofit but all others we kept the same for now. The rest of the drawers in the camper currently have friction rails and maybe in the future we can upgrade all the others to have ball bearing soft close sliders.

    I like the enthusiasm. lol. That's just the plastic screw cover. If you want to stop the wood rot, the aluminum comes off, then buytal installed between the upper and lower halves of fiberglass. The water even follows the screw threads in, hence why they are rusty. The buytal in between prevents this. Still a great project, keep up the good work!

      @LLM1027 6 місяців тому

      @@b19sleeper9 thank you for responding! I think I found it just after I sent you that. I ended up leaving the windows alone… Didn’t want to mess with them since the previous owners purchased it in the fall of 2018, they took it to an RV dealership where they worked on it all winter. New vents, all appliances serviced, windows resealed and new gel coat and decals etc. The husband passed away soon after, so they didn’t even get to use it much. I’m so impressed with how well it was looked after. I watched every UA-cam video I could find on ideas of how to update it and freshen it, dues, and don’ts, what works and what doesn’t. I almost didn’t paint it because it was like new inside. The only thing they changed was the flooring. I believe the ceiling was replaced because it looks brand new. Whoever worked on it did an immaculate job. My brother called the dealership that did all the work on it and they remember the fellow who owned it and said he was meticulous. They spent $11,000 on all the work. They even had Nufloors replace the flooring. I’ve purchased fabric to have it reupholstered this spring and just need to figure out what I’m going to do for window coverings. All my friends have RVs and I’ve borrowed my brothers Westphalia or stayed in a tent when I tagged along. I’ve always loved BigFoot, and have looked for years. Had my eye on many, but this one was a 9hr drive away. Many phone calls, texts, and a friend’s uncle who coincidentally lived two minutes away, I decided it was the one. So my son and I made the trip to Prince George and picked it up. As hard as it was to alter its original state, it was still 1988 on the inside. I’m pleased with the way it looks so far. Your trailer is going to be like new! I’m super excited for you! I also follow Levi and Leah from Vancouver island and look forward to watching their progress UA-cam videos too. I’m sure you must be following them. With Levi’s dad‘s skills… I can only imagine what it’s going to look like once they’re finished with it. Cheers!

    Are you using unwaxed or waxed resin for these patches? And why?

    • @b19sleeper9
      @b19sleeper9 10 місяців тому

      Hey guys, so I’m using waxed resin. It cures after I apply the hardener without spraying it on manually. The unwaxed method you can layer it on quickly and boat repair people probably go this route for time schedule. But I found it’s simpler to use the waxed version in our cases because you just brush it on heavy and let it cure 24 hours before sanding again for another layer(slow and steady for my unskilled gelcoat experience gain). Tip, once you layer the gelcoat heavy don’t disturb it by touching it with the brush again. Ambient temperatures have to be taken seriously or the chemical cure won’t happen. It’s why is used the heat gun to seal the surface so it cures when it was cold outside but not too much heat or it bubbles. Don’t hesitate to reach out for any assistance!
