Great explanation. Yup, most of these group paintings are so dull, simple group portraits. This super famous paintings is so different. Wow, misnomered the "Night Watch!" Brilliant!

I like it you can See him emerging into this dangerous looking world and from the face, order without this there'd just be chaos, id like a animation to be made based on this picture with his face developing then the figure the his his green and pleasant land coming into view around him! Id like the animation to be about three minutes long and called saviour, id like pete townsend to score the music for it and id also like pete to do a modern opera type thing called bodisehia about a queen from the olden days who sees a vision of modern britain and marvels at it

Ivan's story especially makes me feel saddended. Ivan had a childhood where he saw the adults around him taking advantage of the power of the throne, since his parents had died and he was too young to be in power. Those memories, combined with what was likely mental illness, hurt him. I always wonder what it would have been like had we known more about mental health back then. I do not think his action should be excused, of course.

I was in arms length of the statue, no bulletproof glass just a velvet rope. When I got close to it, it dropped me to my knees. I sobbed so hard without knowing it was an emotion that confused me, and others felt the same, but the beauty of the statue is beyond reproach.

I’ve always felt that mannerism likely was informed and inspired by Hellenistic era Greek sculpture, which eschewed classical Greek art’s emphasis on strict anatomical accuracy for more liberal, exaggerated and expressive postures and gestures with a high emphasis on movement and contorsion. Compare the Hellenic statue “laocoon and his sons” with the classical “Doryphoros” for a good comparison highlighting these two different ancient art movements. Ancient Roman art more or less returned to the realism of classical Athenian sculptures emphasis on physical accuracy but emphasized the same emotion as Hellenic using things like subject, gesture, and clothing/props/size in order to convey specific emotional stares. A good example is the famous “Augusta prima porta” or “the dying Gaul”
