Welcome to Wisconsin Trout Fishing! I mainly fish the WI Driftless region. Trout fishing is fun and easy to get started. Trout are consistently rated the best inland fish for consumption and are delicious!! I do not name streams or places on UA-cam. There really are no secrets out there. I recommend you check the WI DNR Trout stream maps dnr.wi.gov/topic/fishing/trout/streammaps.html for places you wish to fish. I am happy to discuss spin fishing, techniques, gear, and just about anything else 😊 Thanks for watching and happy fishing!!!
Wisconsin Trout Fishing - Up North! 11/1-11/3.
Adam, Shebs and I made it up north for another lake runner try. We hit is hard, three days in a row! Adam was an awesome host, but the 2 starting days were skunks through long sections. On Day 3, Shebs picked up a splake at spot A and for the last act, Plan B, on the last stop, before calling it, I landed a steelhead trout at 27" and close to 7#. After the long wait, I got to say folks, that felt real good!! Happy fishing, we will see in 2025 for sure and may have a few state park runs here over the holidays. Thanks for watching!!!

WI inland season closer. I only had a short evening window here to close out the season. I did connect with a few fish and had fun. Really happy to see the changes to this stream system. this will definitely be an early season stop. No weeds and plenty of habitat for trout. See ya up north and then 2025. Happy fishing!

@@tqjh7035 happy fishing!
Would you say this was a typical trip up there, or are there normally more fish in the system?
@@levimesser6414 definitely not typical. The recent heavy rain was the biggest issue. One or two more days would have been better. Also, it warm for November and we had a very dry and warm Sept Oct as well. All of these things inhibit lake runner migration. I would guess the run hasn't even really hit yet. Also unusual. The last of the salmon will rush in in Nov sometime, probably late. There are also more resident fish usually. You don't know if you don't go. Happy fishing!
This is what happens when too many people know about a fishing spot. Human to fish ratio is way too high. Nice fish though. You boys sure are dedicated!
@@PackerManForLife There's a lot of water and a lot of fish there. Weather just isn't holding to tradition. Upper 50s in November is nice on the body, but it barely hit 32 for a low. And a virtual drought before 1.5" falls the day before the trip. Oh well, good times with good friends and nice steelie on top. Happy fishing!
great video! as a normal driftless trout fisherman looking to get into steehead and salmon in the great lakes. do you just use spinners? do you find thats mostly effective enough?
@@dodge33w thanks. Given the popularity of fly fishing and centerpin angling, hardware chuckers are in the minority up north. They do work and you can see past videos of similar success. It has been many years since being skunked up north using hardware. I use big PM size 18 equivalent lures. Also Vibrax lures in yellow and orange seem to get hit. I think it is likely that fly guys and pinners connect with many more fish, but you can't beat the thrill of a 7-10#er on a 6'6' medium heavy rod. Game on! Happy fishing!
@@WisconsinTroutFishing no doubt about that! thanks for the info!
I hate fisherman like this. “Keep your freak’n month shut.”
@@stevetan2331 happy fishing!
@stevetan2331 It may sound snotty, but advertising good fishing spots is the quickest way to ruin the fishing quality. Human population has far exceeded an adequate natural balance. The more people that fish the stream that you want to fish, the worse it will be for you. Whether it hurts your feelings or not, Shebs is speaking facts.
@PackerManForLife no offense taken. But keep in mind that all streams are mapped and listed by county. To think that a video without names, pins or landmarks would cause demand for anglers that weren't going to be there anyway, just doesn't follow. I don't disagree at all that humans are bad for the fish. However, I don't view this channel as advertising, beyond general trout fishing anyway. If somebody sees what I do and, 1. actually gets off the couch, 2. Can actually fish and 3. Can do what it takes to be successful, hats off to em, they were going regardless. Happy fishing!
@@WisconsinTroutFishing I was replying to SteveTan2331, elaborating that "keeping your mouth shut" is the correct way to approach fishing, to preserve it. You handle your UA-cam channel extremely well, not giving spots away.
@PackerManForLife Even Shebs comes out with a gem every other year or two. Hahahaha!

No hate here at all!! Disappointed, yes! These fish are WILD, NOT STOCKED!!! DNR does not stock this river. So you have a limited amount of Steelhead coming in every year, and to kill a hen in her prime like this just wiped out hundreds of fry fry from the recruitment next spring. If it was a buck, it would have been one thing. But taking out a hen like this is truly disappointing.
Well, not exactly. There are Seeforellen brown, splake and Coaster programs that are contributing fish to both the peninsula and south shore. While not as aggressive as 90s and 00s stocking, that produced large numbers of fish and decimated natural stock and genetics on the river in question here. I see we disagree and that's fine. U do u. Happy fishing!
Wow, feisty comments. Also the Coho has a forked tail, the steelie has a square
@@brookiebob Shebs was excited to see a fish, hahaha! Some cohos have only a slightly forked tail, but yep. Square tail, white mouth and gums, equilateral tail spots - all steelie. Happy fishing!

@@billverheyden2561 Thanks and happy fishing!
Yeah you're right. We don't need anymore people fishing this river than we already have. We need even less killing everything they catch!!
I don't share Shebs' opinion there, but we all have them. As do you. I will harvest any fish that is legal to do so when i choose to. It's my right and yours. U do u. There is nothing wrong with it and there are several more dangerous factors than harvest that are negative for the fish. Every fish that is fought to exhaustion is likely going to die. In this video we saw two dead fish from angler mortality in one run. I would have preferred that fish be harvested vs. left to rot after catch and release. You do know these natural fish are all invasive species right? All of em, browns, cohos and steelies are not native to the Brule. I love animals as much as anyone can and these ones are tasty. Happy fishing!

Well, now you are being rude. On avg, I harvest a (1) legal steelie and any legal salmon. How you could possibly criticize for legal harvest within the legal management strategy doesn't make any sense. Every citizen has this right and angling is one of the weakest mortality factors in the research I have read. Again, u do u. I live in WI, so I won't be going to MN, except to fish. Happy fishing!

Thanks for making these lure making videos. Appreciate it! I am new to this and am going to try and replicate the 6 spinners as best as I can because otherwise I would have no clue what to buy, regarding component sizes. You showed the packaging for the hooks, so I got that part. And the blade sizes you have labelled on the paper; i.e. PM 2, 4, 6, 9, 15, 18. But I don't know the wire sizes, the bead sizes. Are beads sized according to the diameter of their holes, or, the outside diameter of the bead? Finally, on the paper you have listed 1/16oz, 1/8oz, 1/4oz, etc...are those the weights of the lure body? Thanks anyone who can help answer these questions.
@@stephenbassett8711 drop an email and I will send you a more detailed sizing chart. Yes, the weights indicated are generally the lure body weight. Hooks wires and beads are minimal weight. I like larger diameter beads, but you can do what u want. I sometimes use up to 5/16" bearings on large blades. Bearings are measured by OD, not the hole size. Happy lure making!
Ron, when you talked about temps in early season, did you mean that as soon as temps hit the mid thirties that the melt becomes so significant it basically becomes unfishable? If so, is that because of actual wading conditions (flow too high), slow bite because fish are in new water conditions, or what? And then on the flip side of that, at what temp and time of year do you feel it becomes fishable again? Or say you have a warm stretch in Jan, but a colder stretch in Feb - does it just take a few days after the melt stops for the fish to start up again?
Good question, but I was talking without sufficient detail. In the early season, the only water temps that matter have 2 considerations. 1. trout are very dormant in water under 36F, and 2. rising temps, even tenths of degrees are needed for fish to get active. In early season there will be no water that is too warm. You want to target about 2 hours before peak air temp to two hours after peak temp. Any effort beyond those zones and you are really just hiking in the early season. LoL Early warm ups are usually game on! Happy fishing!
@ thanks for explaining, Ron. Makes good sense!
Awesome video Ron !

What river is this?
@@Cristoano75019lebron That is a lame superior tributary. I do not name streams or places on Utube. Check out WI DNR maps online for places u wish to fish. Happy fishing!
I was camping on the river Shebs fished from the 16th to the 24th. Wish I would've run into him. The river had a lot of coho in it, but they were very tight-lipped and I only pulled resident browns out of that one. I did snag a couple on accident trying to irritate them into biting on a Rippin' Rap. But I was throwing a #4 clown Vibrax (sure looked like that's what Shebs was using!) and couldn't buy a lake runner bite to save my life. I did get a 27.5" on a different river, and an 18.5" splake on another river. But otherwise it was mostly resident browns (biggest being 15.5) and rainbows (biggest being 16.5...don't think it was a steelie). It was still a great time in the northwoods, though. Btw, I LOVED the razzing of Shebs and his preference for the hemo in this video! 😆
@@wisconsindorktrip7873 glad u had some success. Between the pliers and dull hooks, a lot of Shebs razzing goes on! Happy fishing!!
That is exactly the lure I caught both of those salmon on lol But it's one I modified - I added a little worm weight (1/4 oz) inside the 'bell' to make it a bit heavier, put on a better hook and a tail (a crappie tube over the shank) This video edits out all the parts where I'm not catching fish, but I threw gold and silver in-lines, and copper, and fire-tiger vibraxes all week - the only thing that got smacked was the clown shoes!
@@shebs7675 Hey, thanks for the reply Shebs! My splake and salmon both came on the clown, and I could see how the added weight would make it better on the river you were on. There were some deep holes with timber that were tough to fish with a spinner, but had fish stacked up in 'em. I did throw a 1/2 ounce gold Steelhead Slammer for awhile and caught some decent residents on that (and lost the hen to the buck I caught on their redd...but she was getting zombified anyway so that was no great loss), but most of the fish I caught were on the clown. And of course, when I knew fish were stacked I threw everything in my tackle box at 'em. Jigs, stickbaits, kwikfish, etc., but they wanted none of it. I almost stooped to throwing spawn, but couldn't bring myself to do it. Usually I prefer gold when stream fishing, but the clown topped everything and is probably going to be my Superior trib confidence lure. I appreciate you sharing your mods, I will definitely be looking into the worm weights at the very least!
@@wisconsindorktrip7873 Yeah that's how those salmon be sometimes. Firetiger and orange tiger colors have gotten me cohos as well. Sometimes it's just showing them something different! I've caught them on gold and silver as well. I've found that the extra weight can really make a difference when you're trying to get in the strike-zone in strong current or between obstacles. I usually carry a box with a mixture of weight and color combos so I can configure for whatever any given spot requires.
@@shebs7675 I'm gonna have to beef some things up a bit. The biggest spinners I carry are 1/2 ounce. I did try all the colors you mentioned, they just weren't having it. @@WisconsinTroutFishing good to know thank you. Wasn't sure if Oct 15 was for everywhere or not
After watching your October trout fishing, I hope that the DNR changes the closing date of inland trout fishing back to end of September so the trout can spawn without being disturbed.
@@davidstakston1950 I have not seen spawning fish this season, but some years I have. I agree with your position regardless if I see it or not. Probably though, angling drops off in Oct even with the season ending Oct 15. I haven't seen other anglers in months.
Ron, what do you think the average spawning period is in the Driftless, even if this year was late?
My understanding is that our wading silt trails smother the eggs, even if we are watching out for redds. What if September 15-October 15 was bank fishing only (wadeless), limited to streams with bank easements. That might be a nice happy medium? I fished up until the closing date this year too because the weather was so nice. It was good for my soul being out there but I did worry about killing future fish. Respect your point here for sure.
@@seanur2414 in the driftless, I have only seen one single pair of browns actually spawning in October. I think it safe to say that almost all productive spawning occurs in late October and early November for brook and brown trout. Redds in January can have fry or eggs still, but I have only seen empty redds in January and small fry already hatched. In January, I make a point to walk very clear of redds. The fish will not spawn eggs in silt. Browns need rocks, brookies can do sand or rocks, but none due silt or muck. Happy fishing!
@@seanur2414 well that's an idea, but would limit angling severely as most streams do not have easements. That brings traffic and pressure that might not be good either. We have many self sustaining streams that have stayed productive for years since late and early season changes were put in place. I don't think angling is a major influence on the productivity. The biggest factor is stream conditions. Warmer water, erosion and siltation play a bigger role than wading IMHO. Happy fishing!
