Well it’s been over a year into my heat pump experience. This is a rebranded Gree Fless cold climate heat pump that is paired with an older furnace. I took some screen shots mid December so they are not aligned exactly with the stats I say out loud but ballpark figures are correct as your numbers will vary. I live in Southern Ontario in a bungalow about 1000 sq foot. Thanks for watching!

Heat pump freezing normal??
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Рік тому
Quick video to demonstrate that yes it is normal (to a degree) to have your heat pump go through defrost cycles in the winter time. It actually occurs more frequently around the freezing point with more humidity in the air than the truly arctic cold days with high pressure systems. Banding or completely frosted over coils will defrost every 40-90 minutes taking about 1-3 minutes at a time when ...

Looks like you had 2 different models? One was the NS18 and another one that must be slightly different. Which was the one that failed and was the replacement and new improved model?
Yes that’s accurate. The first unit failed after some warranty work (compressor) but it has a 10 year warranty so they just sent the “updated” model. Not really sure what’s new about it other than Seer2 ratings . Gree Flex unit. So far so good with this one.
@@yourelectricneighbour3633, thanks for the reply! We are just about to have a larger Napoleon - not the NS18 series , the WSE but it looks identical, not sure what the difference is but sure hope it works well.
Keep your eyes open for our next calculator trick video where we write words with numbers😂😂 8008
Sounds like your reputable installers didnt use proper practices when installing....compressors dont just fail literally in the first year......
I'm a professional installer, and my Gree Flexx compressor went out after 4 months. They sent me a whole new condenser, and I installed the new condenser. That was over a year ago. Every manufacturer has some lemons come down the line from time to time. But the warranty is worth it every time.
If your on propane. This seems to be worth it. Great video.
41k km in a year, using that model y to perfection 😂🙏
We'd need/use the rear seats a few times a year when we visit the grandkids, the 3-row Y would allow us to take ONE car on those journeys. Our grandkids are 7 and 8 so the third row would be more than adequate. We wouldn't use it for adults.
Its made by gree flex its china i have mr cool universal the same thing .4 years going strong Quebec Canada
This shows how accurate your % to KM is, not battery degradation. To get that you have to do a full health test, which resets the battery then shows
Your problem. Ductwork!! You will continue to have loud compressors and issues. Your ductwork was not sized to the heat pump. You have high static pressure causing the heat not being rejected from the evaporator coil. Has it ever tripped on error codes? Please tell me the installer used the correct evaporator coil in the furnace. Also the furnace and heat pump should never ever run at the same time! Your evaporator coil is infront of the fu mace heat exchanger and will cause massive head pressure and damage to the heat pump compressor. See where im going? These are not a slap it on your furnace hybrid all in one unit. They MUST BE SIZED to the ductwork and habe a non plumber install them!!! Only a heat pump refrigeration tech who has years of hands on installatio should be installing any ducting type air source heat pumps. Or it will FAIL PERIOD!!!
This is horrible... lithium ion batteries are considered bad a 20% loss so at this rate you'll be lucky to get 100k miles.
Excellent video, thanks so much! Problem solved. Got my Model Y two months ago and hope to do some fun campy stuff with it. Got the aftermarket rack off Amazon a month ago. Yep it whistled like crazy. Ordered these rhino strips from e trailer, they got here today and I installed them today. Old ones slip out, new ones slip in (with some WD40). Cut to fit, pop end caps back on, done. No more whistling. Bravo.
Glad it helped! Have fun camping with the Y. We’ve towed a tent trailer and I’ve used tent mode up north. Works great.
I own BOTH models. And both have chutes that jam and freeze up almost constantly. Bad design flaw.
You can try a silicone spray in the chute to help it prevent clogging up. Seemed to help on mine.
I have been looking at replacing my heat pump. I know I am going with Gree,Cooper and Hunter ,Panasonic, probably Panasonic. My Rheem Heat pump is well okay it works but is loud and does not heat worth a flip . I do know that I am installing it my self.
Did you end up making a decision? This gree has been heating well for me.
We’ve had heat pump water hot water systems in Australia for 15 years and they’re ok, but when it gets cold, that thing runs all night, and then comes on again at 5pm when electricity gets expensive. Old Tank leaks now and we are replacing with straight electric on a timer. More efficient in winter and way cheaper. Our original was purchased with government hand outs, cost us $50. Now they’re about $5000. No thanks.
Same as Gree Flexx, Tosot Apex, MrCool Universal. Napoleon may be a Canadian brand but the hardware is made by Gree in China. Side discharge is fine but you have to keep the snow and ice from accumulating in the fan or it won't start, so the same ground stand that is needed for normal heat pumps to keep them out of the snow is also needed for these.
Your unit is a hybrid heat pump. Wind chill is meaningless to machinery. You converted your air conditioning system components (blower motor and A-coil) not your furnace.
Yeah i did mine today on my MY 2023 RWD. It came with 394km full charge and after 16000km i lost only 1km. So not bad
Who the h uses 600 kw pee month. I use like 1800 to 2000 per month. And it cost 150 -220 per month.
that's probably just for the heat pump
What the heck are you running at your house nasa? LOL
3 ton in qc installed is 8k less 5400. Will take 10 years to get into my money. Not sure it’s worth it
How many Sq foot is your home? The NS-18 Series is a 2 ton HP. I just had one installed aswell, a 2.5 ton system and I'm a little worried it may be a little too small for my application and would like to compare, since our heat pumps are relatively same size (and same climate, since I'm in the same region as you). Like yours, I am gas as a secondary source and it'll kick on at -20 I believe. Btw, I recognize that glass roof from anywhere. Nice Model Y!
The NS-18 can be set up as a 2 or 3 ton upon installation via dip switches inside the unit. Check with your installer to see how they set it up. My house is a little over 1000 sq ft and it keeps up well but heat pumps do run longer than a gas furnace, but are designed that way. Thanks for watching!
Which makes more sense for apartment? PTAC heater/ac or mini split with heat and ac? PTAC is loud n ugly. But seems to require less maintenance
If a mini split is installed properly it shouldn’t need regular maintenance and would be more efficient than a ptac. Lots of mini splits on both coasts with milder temps so room control becomes more efficient than whole house hvac.
@@yourelectricneighbour3633 mini split doesn’t need to be cleaned every year or so?
You have a neighbor with ultra sensitive hearing and I hope he will move away soon. You should have bought a Japanese brand which would last 15-20 years instead of Chinese made Gree.
Which are the Japanese brands?
@@gerryattrik4410 Mitsubishi/Daikin/... are major north amercian japanese brands. Mitsubishi also gets rebranded as the most expensive north american brand heat pumps in their ultra premium range so if you can find distrubitors that do Mistubishi directly you can probably cut out some of the middle man pricing. Installed one and it is both ultra efficient, whisper quiet indoor and outdoor. If you live in a climate with extremes just oversize the unit a bit and get wind/hail/snow covers for it. The most important thing with a winter weather heat pump is you must mount it higher than the snow drift level (wall mount or ground stand) or it doesn't matter how good the heat pump is if it gets starved of airflow.
@@gerryattrik4410 Daikin and Fujitsu.
@@Prekkersaurus thank you
Good recommendations. My decision was based on price and word of mouth from a neighbor who used this company. Obviously time will tell but I would agree those brands you listed are the Cadillac of heat pumps.
Does your gas supplier charge you for the hookup every month? I like the idea of a dual fuel setup like this but I don’t want to pay every dang month for the luxury
That's a great point and I want to add that as more people are incentivized to move to heat pumps, inductive cooktops, and heat pump water heaters and dryers, the gas utilities will need to increase hookup fees to maintain the gas network. Or maybe some will instead let maintenance slide in favor of profits until there's another incident like the Merrimack Valley gas explosion. I live at 40 deg N in a 70s house that was never connected to gas and it stays comfortable with a heat pump from 2018.
Yes it’s a $25 flat rate. Wanted to wait a winter or two to see if I used gas anymore and if not then cut ties to avoid this cost. I’m ok with it at this price for now as insurance but if it goes up then that’ll be it…
$25 x 12 is $300 a year just to be hooked up to the grid. While propane is much more expensive, per unit of energy, you can purchase a tank and own the fuel on-site. Converting a furnace to propane is not difficult and may be worth considering if you decide to keep the furnace.@@yourelectricneighbour3633
I wouldn't exactly call them reputable installers if they are installing something that is falsely advertising as made in canada. Sounds like they are trying to pass off cheap stuff as canadian made to justify a higher price.
It’s the brands website but looks like it has now been removed. Installers just go with what they know for brands. Gotta give props to all the companies out there willing to learn new tech.
The truth is with a heat pump you need multiple stages with one of them being pure resistive heating that will raise your electrical usage dramatically, especially if you get freezing temperatures in the winter. Plus be aware that you'll be replacing this equipment every 15-20 years depending on your climate.
Not always needed. Some still work as low as -32 f, but it is less efficient at that temp but still more efficient than resistive heating, often around 1.8 times more efficient at 5f but some are more efficient than that at -10. The 1.8 measurement is based on mine, where I use it as supplemental heat and use a 95% efficient boiler.
Another thing that has to be remembered is that a lot of places only go down to 5-10°C during the winter such as where I live (especially nowadays, it used to go below zero °C a couple days per year when I was little, but now it barely goes below 8...). Here, a heat pump makes perfect sense and I just plonked a minisplit in every room, run it with solar, almost free heating, no need for auxiliary heat, and even without solar it's way cheaper than gas and quicker to heat the house than the old hot water radiators.
So that’s only if you have an air handler installed instead of a furnace as a hybrid set up. If you do have resistive heat for sure that’s the highest cost but with a cold climate heat pump shouldn’t be used too often depending on where you live obviously.
@@yourelectricneighbour3633 The issue is when you have multi-zone on the second floor, you're not allowed to run gas up to the attic where the heat pump will live, so you get stuck having a heat pump. So you need to be aggressive with the thermostat on the 2nd floor to keep the heat down during the day and only heat at night.
Have to say i bought the smaller 18 inch 40v and it works great with snow up to 6inchs or up to 12 inches on a half wide pass i have no issues with it jamming up due to the wheel as most people dont understand is that you should be pushing this like a shovel if its rolling on the wheels your doing it wrong hope this helps
Great choice!
Hello EN, from Ontario here. I just had cold climate Heat pump ( dual fuel) installed yesterday with a new ecobee thermostat. My question is when during a defrost cycle, is my fan supposed to blow cold air in the house?. Is my alternate heat supposed to kick in during the defrost cycle? Very new to heat pumps...thanks
Cold air is normal on defrost with a hybrid system. Only a true air handler with heat strips will activate during that time.
Many people in Alberta have regretted their decisions with heat pump, heard few horror stories where it could not keep up with -40c, people have had cracked water pipes in the house due to freezing.
I don’t think the generation out now are made for -40. More reasonably like -20. Sorry to hear about the pipes though. I lived in Edmonton for 14 years so know the cold.
Great unit. Not Canadian made 😂chyyna
Why dont they have an auxiliary gas or electric furnace?
The heat pump system is using 2x the average small home electrical usage and 2x an electric car. The grid will need substantial infrastructure to handle this home heating load
Not correct. Uses less energy than your typical old school central AC unit.
You're very wrong on that buddy
wondering if you needed to replace the blades or the bottom of the housing that scraps the surface?
Since electric snowblowers blades don’t actually pull the unit forward like the gas ones, they shouldn’t wear out. The bottom scraper wears but should last a few hard seasons first.
Did you include the furnace fan motor usage as well as the heat pump In your calculations?
Yeah but good call. I also later installed an ecm motor for better fan efficiency.
How much is it yo install this type of set up ?
Around 4K for heat pump including installation with rebate but this didn’t include the furnace which most seem to be going with these days.
Total BS
I have the self same one, it's garbage, you really need a 2 stage
ua-cam.com/video/APqRNdNCOWM/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
ua-cam.com/video/TII6XcBSCQY/v-deo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
I can see the struggle you have with the big snow fall, thats exactly how it is, after one session your trashed physically, horrible, underpowered, single stage does not cut it in this type of snow, light fluffy yes, anything more NO
Still happy with the ease of use with the smaller lighter unit. I don’t live in the Rockies though…
I think I'll replace my 18 yr old pump & dump geothermal with one of these, when something expensive breaks on it. It's been a good one, put one $300 fan control board on it in 18 yrs. Well pumps haven't done as good...
Interesting, geothermal was new here years back too but seems more for commercial settings or location based designs.
That Napolean unit looks strangely similar to the American Standard 18 SEER cold climate heat pump that I had put in here in Vancouver. As to your point about dew point, I find that my heat pump does freeze up often. Vancouver's humidity is almost always 100% for these past few days. For now, I've actually set my heat pump shutoff at 0C to cut back over to my natural gas furnace for now. So it sounds like I should actually be checking for my dew point to decide on a proper cut over temp. americanstandardairbc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Quest-Spec-Sheet.pdf
My propane bill last year was 6k from Oct-May.....watching this to see if I can change to heat pump....
Will do a 1 year review shortly. Thanks for watching.
My neighbour just got one installed between our houses and it is noisy enough to notice in our house to the point where it wakes us up frequently so I’m looking for sound insulating solutions! I’ve heard other complaints for noise with this type of heating! Very disappointed
Super frustrating. The website on the Napoleon mentions “whisper quiet” but it’s a rebranded Gree unit and I find the compressor can get noisy on certain cycles but not loud enough to hear through a window. Perhaps a faulty unit.
Air source heat pump working just fine in Western NY snow belt. Cheaper to operate than propane. Only complaint is the noise from the compressor when defrosting can be annoying.
The defrost cycle is definitely louder than I expected. I debated opening the unit to add insulation but don’t want to void the 10 year warranty.
Looks like a Gree Flexx rebranded? Same as MrCool Universal / Midea Evox / GE Connected. I keep finding other brands that are the same / rebadged, looks like I can add Napoleon NS18 to the list!😀 I put a 2-3ton one in last spring, worked fine for A/C, and this is first winter heating with it. Good so far. They have the features to make it cold climate capable and efficient (EVI compressor vapor injection, which is a middle intake port to the compressor, and inverter compressor & fan variable speed). It doesn't have a scroll compressor like the fancier Mitsubishi and others, so I think the COP is not as good, but the price of the Gree is a bit less also. I put a new 410 coil in the air handler, which I had previously put in a new ECM blower motor, and it is set up with thermostat for 2 stage heating and cooling. The ECM motor will save electricity. The hi/low blower speed changes the load on the outdoor unit which then throttles back when it figures out it's on low speed. It is also hooked up to a water coil for heating to a hydronic system, and I'm working on measuring the system COP, we'll see how that looks.
Nice set up. I’ve had to replace the unit (gree) once due to the compressor but napoleon gives a 10 year warranty so it’s good that way. I also installed an ecm blower in my old furnace so now getting better efficiency. Thanks for watching
@@yourelectricneighbour3633 yikes, how long after initial stop did something go wrong? What did it do? Was it something the installer did?
great review !!!! do you think these will work on a gravel driveway or will we be firing stones all over the garden ?
Depends on the type of snow you had. If it’s a frozen layer on the bottom it’ll be fine but if it’s similar consistency then it’ll shoot the gravel. At least either way it’s durable enough to handle gravel (won’t crack the blades).
@@yourelectricneighbour3633 thank you very much, that helps a lot!
Can you post a new video or comment on how it worked in the summer to cool your house?
Yes, will be doing a full one year review shortly. Thanks for watching
Hi New to this channel. Your KW cost is way off. take your hydro bill and the final amount and divide it by final kws used. It will be more then what you are showing. Maybe I am wrong?
For the batteries are you able to use the rectangular batteries from other ryobi tools. This battery looks completely different and made for the snow removers
They use any 40v from ryobi. You may be referring to the smaller 18v in which case no they are not compatible.
