Hybrid Willow in a Dry Climate: How Fast Do They Grow??
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
When I sell hybrid willow in my nursery, I always get lots of questions about them. In this video, I illustrate how the growth rate of hybrid willow is intimately tied to the amount of water they receive. I also show just how little growth you get if you don't water that much. I also illustrate that the amount of growth you get also depends on watering the entire root zone.

Easy Steps for Paulownia Seed Germination
I think i can make it at home
I watched in horror as you touched all around the squirrels. Apparently you care nothing about losing a finger. Squirrels can easily bite through a tough walnut so imagine how easy it will be for a squirrel to bite through your fragile finger bone.
Hi Brian! Do you have any experience on knowing if some species of Ash are more resistant. I'm in an area with EAB that has decimated our native whiate ash. Do you know if the F. angustifolia would be resistant?
Hi there, I'm not sure about F. angustifolia, but I do know F. quadrangulata (blue ash) is marginally resistant among native North American species, and F. manchuria (not native to the US) are resistant, having coevolved with the EAB. I have had success germinating F. quadrangulata from seed. The seed I use is purchased on the open market, so they aren't known to be from a resistant lineage, but I know there are some out there, even of white ash. Asking around on an ash tree Facebook group seems like the best bet at finding seed from resistant trees. Good luck, and keep me updated!
Just getting into biochar. Thanks for the info Subscribed
Thank you for posting.
The soil in the great prairies is 42% biochar you have a way to go.
This stuff eats up cations so I am going to treat mine with Epsom salts magnesium sulphate.
When I get started my choice will be goat shit.
what about a ph test after duck water
What kind of mushrooms are you using? Possibly the mushroom blocks they give away at the garden center?
Great information video 🇳🇿
I hope it gives you some ideas :)
I had mines out for months and caught none. The ground squirrels still living their best life in my yard smh
Poor germination is usually a result of no male trees around. Very few people keep males around. They grow like a weed if a male tree was nearby
Don’t fertilize them at all until they’re big. They make their own nitrogen and this can increase the risk of Pythium root rot
Top part that's cut off goes into the base upside down with the lid removed and some shade cloth to filter and create a sump allowing you to drain the worm juice.
Damn! That is very fast growth! Big difference 22 days apart! That's how mine was, it seemed like it was taking forever and then next thing I know it has 10 leaves and is 2 inches tall in a month!
What does an IBC/flow tank cost there? In South Africa we are pretty geared for roof rainwater catchment, every second house has several 5000L tanks to catch water from roofing, in USD they are about $250 brand new, green or tan so no algae build up. Actually cheaper than buying 5 used IBC tanks
Hi there, sorry for the slow response. I can buy 275 gallon IBCs for $50, but I have a special relationship with a few businesses that sell them. Buying them on the open market, they're more like $75 a piece. So five of them (5000l) would be about $375.
@BriansPermacultureProject thanks for the answer, wow expensive. Living in an arid part of the world obviously has created an industry for water harvesting in my vicinity. I don't think our water situation will improve so harvesting is the way to go
I use a variant of Subcools and Coots super soil recipes. But do have peat and moss I gather on property. And use seaweed instead of kelp. I use type s or m dolomite masonry cement 1/2 cup per gallon of soil. Vermiculite has more silica than perlite. There is fungal dominated soils and bacterial dominated soils. I use spongy wood to hold some moisture for anaerobic activities. Fresh wood chips absorb nitrogen before slowly releasing it. Then mycrrohiza move nutrient from bacteria in wood to plants. I also plant food plot clover to fix nitrogen in the orchard. I have sandy end moraine ridge and low land wetlands. Indoors I use lucky dog by fox farm with CaMg and worm leechate once a week.
That looks like a lot of work. I had to dig hugelkulture holes to catch the water. We have to drain our tanks at camp for winter. I have a flowing point well with a 2 stroke water pump. 2 stroke because distance to run electric lines and has to go up to camp on the ridge. Unless you have super capacitor to go with battery bank for solar 2 stroke engines are the way. The Amish here even use 2 stroke water pumps. A 1 HP submersible well pump needs a 2.5 KW generator to operate the pump. A 30 amp breaker with a pump smaller than 2 hp will use 11 amps or 2000 watts during operation. Additionally, it will need a 4 KW internally regulated generator for the pump to operate efficiently. We use our solar to run ac/dc American made freezer. With super capacitor bank I can run skill saw anytime sun is shining. Batteries are low voltage but high energy density super capacitors are high voltage but low energy density. The super capacitors act like a soft start. And keep your batteries from hard cycles. Which is worse when they are cold. Not all battery cycles are the same. Ever see a car's lights dim when bass hits? That's hard on battery and alternator. But a capacitor stops that by storing higher voltage needed. And they charge in no time. I am wiring my cottage in D.C. with d.c. appliances one a.c. inverter to run power hunger tools. D.C. devices sip electric compared to a.c. Pumping water and heating takes lots of energy. Better than carrying water in buckets.
Thanks so much for this super helpful post. I'll be referencing this as I plan my system!
Life is an adventure. The moment you get land you get work for the rest of your life, what will be missing frequently is who pays the bills.... for me 34 years went by and still I am working on improoving the soil and pumping the rain water up the hill... have fun in the years to come. Stay healthy.
Thank you for this lovely message. It's nice to connect with others who are motivated by the same things in life, and it's fascinating to hear your prospective from 30+ years later. It sounds like it has all been worth it?
great vid brother, is that google maps you're using for the mapping the area?
That’s what a great idea hopefully it works out for u 🇳🇿
do you finally get use to the frog noises... cause i feel like that would drive me nuts when trynna make vidjas
i recommend you to make the wheel's gear ratio bigger, it will help a lot on torque and more energetic efficiency.
Too much effort😂
First to post.
Amazing video! I did this with paulownia tomentosa recently from two pods which would be probably about 2000 seeds and in about a week to 10 days every single one sprouted! Got a seedling that is growing well right now and even though it is October they grow well in the winter. Thank the Lord Jesus for plants they are so fascinating. UPDATE: It has now been a few months and paulownia is ridiculously massive! The more light you give them the faster they grow and they might even be able to have 24 hours of light. More than two feet tall after three months.
This is so awesome to hear, thanks for sharing! How are they doing so far?
@@BriansPermacultureProject Just wanted to give an update thank you for this method it worked out very well with every single seed sprouting and growth is now insanely fast as I gave liquid fertilizer every few days!
@@BriansPermacultureProject How big did your paulownias get?
Make sure your steel pieces are clean and dry before you preheat them to 200° F minimum. Your welds will be beautiful. 😊
Why is this not working for me? put it out for the first time for a full day and got nothing… put plenty of food but they didn’t even touched it. even though I put it in a place where I get the most activity
You might try placing bait in the area first, and then put the trap over it after several days. I use chicken feed. For me the trap works well because I'm trapping ground squirrels, and they're used to climbing in tight spaces. Tree squirrels are more skittish about confined spaces.
Where did you get this Scion wood?
Hi there, I bought some from Eliza Greenman (Hog Tree), and from Perfect Circle Farm (perfectcircle.farm). Fruitwood Nursery in California also has them from time to time, but they sell out lightning quick. You can sign up for a restock notification from them.
@@BriansPermacultureProject thanks for the quick response! Hope yours are doing well!
you should have done rain water harvesting earthworks, on contour lines for your trees
Where did you take the seeds? Right now I have the big fruit of Osage Orange tree, and can I cut it into 2 and take seeds of that, and will be able to plant it too? Will it work?
Hi there, Osage orange doesn't grow naturally in my area, so I had to purchase seeds. Harvesting them from the fruits, though, should work just fine.
You are suppose to paint them to prevent light exposure, you are not maintaining your farm, must be the worst farm I have ever seen
can you post link where you got it ?
I had a 80ft ash tree 6 ft from my house , the main bark was 35 inch diameter and just perfect and flawless with the diamond grooves on the bark.. Sent a video to arboretum arborist and he told me to get rid of my ash because it was too close to the house and the deck built around it was not good for the ash tree and it had a slight lean. I have been miserable without my ash tree and it’s so hot here in southern California that makes me miss my ash tree. It had a bunch of seedlings and I noticed some are growing here and there , can u take the green seedling and transplant near the stump? They grind the stump 8inch below soil!! If I plant these baby seedlings 2ft from the main stump , will it be okay? I have been shopping around for trees to give me a canopy but they are not native like the Chinese pistache male , It won’t help with soil erosion like the ash tree? Please advise thanks
Hello, thanks for the quality video. Do you think that is good investment, have you research the markets? I have a land and i'm thinking about growing Paulownia for wood :). Thank you.
would this work on regular eastern grey squirrels?
Hi there, I think this trap is more geared towards ground squirrels; in my mind, I think ground squirrels are used to crawling into tight/confined spaces that tree squirrels aren't used to. People who have used this trap for tree squirrels tend to report poor results :(
when I was in san diego, I went to farmer's market and bought mulberry. after eat most of the basket, I direct put the rest of the mulberry in the small plant pot. (yes just bury the fruits in the soil) soak the soil twice everyday and high temperature (July), no direct sunlight. after 2-3 weeks I have almost 10 baby mulberry plants. just a personal experience.
I wished this worked for us. We only caught one. The other squirrels realized the first squirrel was trapped (as did he). So they would come up to the trap but NOT go in. The trapped squirrel seemed to communicate with them: Don't do it! Maybe we have gifted squirrels?
I had mines out for months and caught none. The ground squirrels still living their best life in my yard smh
Wood chips are easy to get. Chicken manure in large quantities, not so much.
Could you please tell me what you use for feed? I have countless squirrels and I’m hardly getting any. I think when I’m using for bait isn’t working.
Hi there, I use chicken feed. It's nothing fancy, any should work fine. If they aren't going into the trap, you might feed them a bit without the trap to get them to like the feed. Then you could put the trap out with feed inside after free feeding them for a few days. I've heard that some species of squirrels are much harder to trap than others.
I layered a 50/50 chicken manure wood chip mix in between layers of 100% wood chips. Its been a couple weeks now and all of the manure layers have mushrooms growing out everywhere. Hoping those will help breakdown some of the surface crust. I'm still on the fence on whether or not to turn
Very interesting topic . I always wonder isn't it awesome if we travel using only solar powered
I agree! It's a real trip to think that this cart just pulls energy "out of thin air".
Yes @@BriansPermacultureProject
Subbed, no question! I love what you're doing and your attitude to make it work with what you have lying around - you clearly have a good understanding of forces at play and where you need to add strength. You'd probably get a kick out of some of my stuff too, but I'm not yet as comfortable talking to the camera as you are. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for this very kind message! I'm glad you like the "make it work" approach to projects like this. I know some people like pristine builds (like Mike Festiva), but I think rough and tumble builds like this have their place. If you ever share your projects, let me know, I'd love to check them out!
@BriansPermacultureProject hey man, there's a couple of videos on my channel, but I'm always adding more.
I have bought the seeds and try to grow in North California
Very cool! Update me with how it goes~
What feed u use
I just use chicken feed. It has corn, Milo, millet, sunflower, etc.
Thank you. I harvested a ton of seeds from a beautiful specimen I found in Oceanside,CA I will use this method.
This is great to hear! I hope everything goes well. I hope to hear back with updates.
What bait draws them in?
I use chicken scratch.
I built one of these. Works like a charm. I let the tree squirrels go. They keep the yard free of crickets and other bugs and I like watching them play with the birds. The ground squirrels however, they go back in the ground, just differently than they came out.
We have a ground squirrel infestation, so we will definitely try this trap. We just don’t want our tree squirrels to get caught in it.
This is awesome! I'm not sure what the prices are on these things lately, but making your own is surely very inexpensive!
