    Thanks for the rundown on this! I was wondering how connected it was to the comic. I've picked it up, along with the other two Titan novels. But I've only read Blood of the Serpent so far. I enjoyed that one, but it had some pacing issues and I thought it went on too long. If this one is a faster shorter read it might just hit the right notes. I'm sure I'll get to it. But im still catching up on the Blackstone series too. So much Conan goodness, so little time lol.

    I'm 3/4ths in, and it's surprisingly pretty damn excellent. The 1st chapter worried me, especially how the lackluster battle between Conan and a sabertooth tiger was written. But after chapter 2, the story really became hard to put down. Great new characters are introduced, and Conan is written rather well. I don't know how the last 70 pages I have left will be, but not being a fan of this authors earlier works I've tried years ago, this is a VAST improvement!

    • @StygianDogs
      @StygianDogs 3 дні тому

      Other than the El Borak story, I've never read Lovegrove before. But you're exactly right that things improve markedly after Chapter 1. There was still the odd thing that raised an eyebrow, but nothing that diminished Conan as a character. And once the action moves beyond Eruk, it's great. It's fun...and in this world, sometimes that's all we need. 👍⚔️

      @StygianDogs Exactly right. I have last 70 pages yet to read, but I'd venture to say it's definitely bigger and better than Chuck Dixon's last two, a long with Hocking and Sterling's novels. Just hope Lovegrove ends this novel with a terrific ending. Then it's on to Red Sonja: Consumed novel by Simone next.

    I like how Zub presented the Frost Giant's Daughter as an exploration of Conan'a faith and belief in sorcery and higher power. Braithwaite's art is beautiful. The opening page in this issue Conan staring at a starry sky is one of my favourite images in the series so far.

    The end papers they're doing is a nice touch, but i can't justify duplicating the Marvel editions. Roy Thomas did construct a chronological order to the Conan stories so there is proper continuity from issue to issue. Issues 6-11 follow one connected story as does issues 17-26, an so on.

    I've been reading this series through kindle and I appreciate the clear high quality and variety of art we've seen so far and the stories themselves have been decent to good especially the Jim Zub and Patch Zircher issues. Tis a shame Titan still has recurring printing issues, they have to fix this asap or else the series might suffer even though creatively it is quite good so far.

    • @StygianDogs
      @StygianDogs 16 днів тому

      The issues have looked wonderful in digital. Fafner's art in Issue #1 looked fantastic in that format. Interestingly, I feel that Pace's work in Issue #2 was served to greater effect in print format. (Though there was no quality issue between the two.) His rustic style is just somehow meant for the tactile world. I think my biggest gripe in this issue is (and I know I'm repeating myself) the back cover. And I think Lion's observation on the pin-ups not taking advantage of the the large page format is spot-on. 👍

  • @OldManHyborian

    Finally secured my copy of Savage Sword Omnibus #1 and it did not disappoint. I have all the black and white issues, except Savage Tales #1, and this will save my originals for re reading. Size is smaller than the originals; however, once you get into it you don’t even notice that. Man, does the artwork ever pop on the glossy paper. Roy’s intro, and all the pin-ups were super enjoyable. Anybody who missed out on getting the original copies this is a must have to enjoy some master artwork and storytelling.

    • @StygianDogs
      @StygianDogs 13 днів тому

      It's such a great resource! Only downsides are the smaller size (though, as you say, it becomes moot!) and the bulk of it...only because it's not really the kind of thing that you can easily read in bed. 😂 That's what I love about the soft cover, newsprint omnibii that Dark Horse released...they don't feel too precious and they don't have the same kind of heft. But these hardcover versions really are a reference treasure! 👍⚔️

  • @hyperguyver2
    @hyperguyver2 20 днів тому

    I legitimately hope that when this event is finished next month that we never see or hear about the Black Stone ever again. The insertion of one random object from a previous story is one thing but to turn it into a through line is ridiculous to borderline absurd. This has never been done in any of Howard's stories and I belive he didnt do it because it was absurd. this is twice Zub and his team has allowed Conan to die. Howard took character deaths very seriously and was a grevious consequence that nobody just comes back from. I love the references to the other stories but if you've killed your title hero twice in the span on a year how can any stakes be of importance if he'll just come back? I really hope this event ends for good and we can move away from it.

    • @StygianDogs

      @hyperguyver2 yup, pretty much. I'm gonna guess that it might end with the promise of more Thulsa Doom. I'm liking it enough for sure...but definitely see aspects of it being a marketing tool to introduce Howard’s other characters for use in the future. Which I'm fine with...but I'll be content to see no more 'time travel' or cross-overs for a good long while (unless it's maybe Conrad and Kirowan interacting with an older El Borak once in a blue moon.)

    Good review, nothing wrong with bringing up things that you dislike, that does not make it a poor issue, just not the best. Cover by Jusko is top tier, he is the best at the covers. Pin-ups were too dark. Love King Conan, Jason Aaron’s story was good and art was not bad. Damn thing in the Water was a fun little tale, enjoyed it. I really do not like young Conan; although, the story was not bad, was not a fan of the art. Overall solid issue, having all Conan stories was a plus.

    I enjoyed it, but I did want to mention about the break in the story from Part 1 to Part 2. I felt that the transition was a bit abrupt, and maybe tweaking the paneling would've been more effective (a dedicated splash page?)? Currently, it gives the impression that the team lettered "Part 2" into the panel at the last second. (An *ultra* minor nitpick that, otherwise, didn't detract from the awesome main story.) The Jim Zub ultra-short was fine. The third backup was neat too. Overall, an enjoyable magazine issue.

    this was a great issue. it's taken a bit to get there but the printing (on my copy at least) looks top notch and no busted corners ! (maybe having 80+ pages is too hard to ship undamaged). King Conan is back and that means maybe we get some Conn stories down the road too. Really enjoyed the quick hit from de la torre, and yes the Conan mother thing was a questionable inclusion... Nice pin ups... maybe we'll get some full portfolios in the future. Good vid, as always seems to be the case.

      I've liked all of the issues...but none have quite nailed it yet. Almost...but not quite. Honestly, I did enjoy this one a lot. But when I saw the errors on the back cover, I knew before opening it that it just wouldn't be THE issue that got it all right. (I know, perhaps I need to lower my expectations. 😉) But when something so superficial is so wrong, well it made me feel that maybe my money is being taken for granted. I appreciate your candor in this review. Your critiques are valid and I agree with all of them. As a side note, the text block formatting errors on the back of the book are exclusive to the print edition. The text block is perfect in the digital addition. It makes me wonder if something happens when the digital masters that the printer receives don't get verified or Q/A'ed before the go to mass print. As I often bind my own books it happens to me quite often if I don't check and recheck. Anyways, thought it might be something you would like to know. Cheers friend.

    I never purchased any of the Marvel Omnibus’ so I made the leap to get the Titan version. I have most of the original Conan the Barbarian comics, still have about 20 of the early issues to get in order to complete the run; however, the omnibus is the best way to enjoy the art and stories without damaging my originals. The introduction by Roy Thomas was fantastic and all the extra content is so interesting. One thing I do like about the Titan version is that it is only Conan content. My Savage Sword Omnibus has not arrived yet, anxiously waiting for that to arrive.

    As usual, I enjoyed your review. Cover "A" was not my favorite, but not bad. Braithwaite’s art is good and solid, it makes the story flow. Jim Zub is doing a very good job on the writing; although, this story was a little heavy on the religious side. Also, I hope that flashbacks to Conan’s youth will not be a recurring theme, it worked for this arc; however, not my favorite part of the story line. Overall, a solid story arc, and this version of the Frost Giants Daughter was well worth the read.

      @@OldManHyborian Thanks Dog Brother! I agree - as much as it worked here for the purpose of the story, I'm not a big fan of the child Conan in Cimmeria. Busiek made it work well in his run...it can work, but it's best when limited. I'm not particularly a fan of seeing Conan return to his village either (as it happened a few times, I think, in the Dark Horse run). There's definite appeal in Conan venturing onward, leaving the past in the past.
