Am I Helping Thieves to Steal Your Guns?
This is my response to the accusation that I am helping thieves when I show how vulnerable popular handgun safes are.

      Normally, I ignore postings under older videos, but I'll answer your question. I have not looked at that safe. And I've examined more safes with Simplex locks than I ever wanted to. As you can see from my videos, the primary concern is whether or not a safe has shielding inside to prevent the lock from being knocked through. I recommend buying a safe, examining it, and returning it if it is not reinforced inside. Good luck.

    A few years ago, I stumbled upon a video where someone showcased a safe with a simplex lock, but the housing supposed to protect it has a hole where you can potentially knock the shaft all the way through like on your V-Line Brute video. Is it okay if I share your video to show the flaw?

I would love you to go on a mission to find a biometric safe that you approve of. Finally, I get that you are tired of brands like Vaultek, but it seems like they amd a couple of others actually improve their products based on feedback from people just like you. It has been a few years since you have tested a Vaultek or similar product. Interested to see if biometric products have closed the door on forced entry efforts.

  • @bostonbesteats364
    @bostonbesteats364 Місяць тому

    Regarding lock picking of handgun safes, the one thing I would still like to see is at least some feedback on how bad the backup key security is for a particular safe. Many of these safes seem to have very basic tubular locks that can be opened in seconds by a slightly motivated teenager with zero lock picking skills who bought a tubular lock pick online. It is impossible to tell from advertising how bad the key lock is, but it should be at least above this minimum level. If a kid wants to learn real lock picking, there's nothing a parent can do about that, and brute force is probably a greater risk anyway.

    If you look at the demographic distribution in China you will see that there is not enough young people in the country to replace their aging workforce. We should start seeing the collapse of Chinese manufacturing in the next 15 years or so. Even with China lying about the numbers is easy to see that the number of workers 55 and older cannot be replaced by those who are under 35. The number of young people will not be enough to man the factories, which will drive up labor costs and force out companies from China.

    • @HandgunSafe

      I think you're way off base. As I discussed in a previous video, universities in China are generating more graduates in STEM subjects than any other nation in the world, by the millions. China is far, far outpacing all other nations. These are not the best university programs, but China's growing work force has been adequate to maintain China's status as the world's manufacturing resource. I do not for one moment believe westerners can trust data on births and deaths coming from China. The CCP controls all information released to the west. If you wish to believe there are "experts" in the U.S. who have accurate data, you are free to believe that. I suggest you gauge China's strengths and capabilities by their actions, the number of STEM subject graduates, the steady expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative, the size of China's military, etc. China is in no danger of collapse.

      @@pauljenkins6877 Price is a perfectly good consideration. My preference has to do with the dimensions and the slightly more compact design of the Steelhead. Also, I don't really like the gas struts that come on top-opening pistol boxes. Sometimes you get a good strut that won't impede your attempt to open the box and that will catch the lid before it drops. But sometimes you get a strut that fights you opening the box and lets the lid drop, so that you smash your finger.

    I wish I could send you a handgun safe from South Africa. The standards for gun safes are very stricted and set by the national police service. As a result they only vary in size. Same gauge of steel. Same theft resistant lock. All gun safes must be inspected by a police officer after installation as well. That's where safe storage laws are going. Every handgun safe will eventually need to be certified by Underwriters Laboratory before sale. Honestly, I wish there were just an oligopoly of brands that offered good safes and the riffraff were driven out of the market.

      @@HandgunSafe I will send you pictures so you understand what I mean by "they only vary in size." Basically, I assume the quality of the safes only varies at the level of welds and paint. The government industrial designers specified everything. I have only ever seen pictures of the rifle safes, so they might use thicker steel. Bottom line, I'll try to send you a small safe, but whatever you can glean from it will apply to at least anything you would call a "handgun safe." The same lock boxes are required for storing guns in a vehicle as well. I'm very curious what you think of their quality. I will explain more in email, but there are many important reasons why SA has the gun regulations they do. Safe storage rules serve many functions in SA society and tie in with other gun regulations.

      Thanks! It has gotten so little response I thought the gag must have fallen flat. Happy Halloween!

    Can you review something by Secureit?

      I will write to them and see if they would be willing to donate a small safe for review. The Agile Model 14 might be a good fit for the channel.

      So I talked with Secureit. They are sending a new version of the Model 20. I will evaluate it, record a video, then hold off posting the video until Secureit has the products ready to ship. This will be sometime in mid November, plenty of time for holiday shopping this year.

    I've actually been looking at this same safe as well as a V-Line model but was waiting to buy until this channel did a review XD. Hopefully they go on sale Black Friday! Any bit we could save is helpful.

    (Erroneous assumptions removed. 1081*2 combinations it is. Still, too few for my liking.) Now, if there were more buttons... or if the resetting failed combination would take more than a moment... such lock would be more practical.

      @HandgunSafe 2 місяці тому

      The 5-button Simplex lock allows for a total of 2,162 possible combinations. For an understanding of the mathematics, see my video, “How Many Combinations Are Possible With a Simplex Lock?" The math in that video is simple enough for a middle school student to replicate.

      You are assuming that users are restricted to two input steps; and that every combinations step is restricted to only two states when the last definitely has three (though that bit feels like it may be emergent from the way that the buttons arrest the gears tra-- _Wait a minute!_ -Has- Do any of the buttons(/gears) work as a modifier/"shift" key? Before switching over to electronic-access control; There were many secure doors around [intl. airport] that maintenance frequently had to disassemble/reset that certain officers/supervisors habitually kept moderate pressure/tension on some buttons while programming the combination. I'd assumed it was because they were exhausted and indexing their key-presses (by feel), but now that I vaguely know how these work...

      @@LynxSnowCat I don't know who you're responding to, but the lock allows for 2,162 combinations. That's it. If you're responding to the other guy, I think I understand what you're trying to get at but he might be confused. He would probably be better off just looking at my video. But thank you for trying to broaden his thinking. 😊

      @@LynxSnowCat Yeas, I see my mistake now. And I never knew about half-press. Still, 2186 combinations seriously limit the usability.

    • @Jonathan906
      @Jonathan906 2 місяці тому

      The 2162 combinations is probably enough if one's use case is to lock the gun up in the car while running into the post office or other prohibited zone for a brief errand. For in the home where kids have access for long periods of time, for that use case I would want more than just 2162 possibilities.

    Hi, what do you think about the Viking VS-35SX which is a front opening safe, as opposed to top-opening? Also on Amazon but a bit pricier at $290. The door is only 5mm thick, but it uses the Simplex lock too. Capacity is greater than this 35SX at only $40 more.

      I like Viking Safe products. If I've endorsed a product on my recommendations list (see playlists), then I endorse the safe.

    There's an aspect to Point #2 that you didn't address. There can in fact be a difference between the intent of the manufacturer of a safe and how the safe is used by the gun owners who buy it. That said, the practices you speak of are so common and widespread that it would be hard for me to accept that the manufacturers are ignorant to the likelihood that their product will be used as permanent storage. So in the end, as I write this comment and think about, I still find myself agreeing with you. Good video, btw, and thanks for posting it.

      You may have a point. Unfortunately, as I explained in my previous video, the Chinese manufacturers who design and produce most of these devices don't know what they're doing. They don't own guns or live in compliance with gun laws or have a clear idea of how these devices might be used. Industry is a mess.
