How To Heal Your Trauma: Part 2 - How Our Brain Responds to Threat
Welcome to Part 2 of our 5-part series on how our nervous system shapes our human experience in response to trauma.
In this video, we dive into the different stages of our brain’s response to threats-social engagement, fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. You’ll learn how our nervous system cycles through these stages in reverse evolutionary order, and how this affects the way we react under stress.
When a threat appears, our stress levels rise as our body prepares to take action. However, when the threat becomes overwhelming, our body reaches a point where it can’t handle any more stress, causing us to freeze. This freeze doesn’t mean the fear goes away-instead, we’re stuck in a state of heightened alertness, unable to respond.
This video explains why we sometimes feel paralyzed by fear, even when we appear calm on the outside. Understanding this response is essential for recognizing how trauma affects us and finding a path toward healing.
Stay tuned for the next video, where we explore what happens in the body when we freeze and why it disrupts the natural process of responding to stress. All the concepts discussed in this video are from my book, The Invisible Lion, available through the link below!

How To Heal Your Trauma: Part 4 - Triggers & Baggage
Переглядів 1362 місяці тому
Welcome to Part 4 of our series on how unresolved trauma and the body's response to threat shape our experience. In this video, we dive into how emotional "baggage"-unprocessed fear, pain, and stress-can cause disproportionate reactions to everyday triggers, from relationships to work and beyond. When we experience a threat and don’t fully process it, the response becomes frozen and stored in t...

Welcome to Part 3 of our 5-part series on how our nervous system responds to trauma. In this video, we dive into what happens in the body when we freeze in response to overwhelming fear and how this can disrupt our natural ability to process threats. We use the example of a gazelle at a watering hole to explain how animals instinctively release stored fear after a threat. Unlike animals, humans...

Welcome to Part 1 of our 5-part series on how our nervous system shapes our human experience in response to trauma. In this video, we introduce the concept of The Invisible Lion, an analogy for how past traumas can cause us to react with panic or stress in the present, even when no real danger exists. This happens because our nervous system is still responding as though it's under threat. We br...

Transforming Fear Into Love
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
In this video, I explore how we can transform fear into love. It all comes down to the biomechanics of the nervous system. Dysregulation is a fear-based state. It keeps us on alert for danger, and prevents us from being open, trusting, and vulnerable with others. In regulation, we have a real capacity to love - not just romantic love, but love for our family, friends, and the environment we liv...
A Regulated Nervous System
Переглядів 8573 роки тому
A regulated nervous system responds appropriately to threats in the environment. In this video, I discuss what it means to be regulated. I also discuss how we can move from dysregulation to regulation by time-travelling - travelling back to the time of our earlier threats to which we haven’t yet finished responding. To regulate the nervous system, we need to complete our earlier responses to th...
The Link Between Nervous System Dysregulation and Addiction
Переглядів 6933 роки тому
When we experience overwhelm, we are driven to change our internal or external environment to make ourselves feel safer. When we live in dysregulation, we are likely to use maladaptive coping methods to deal with our overwhelming feelings. Those struggling with addiction are dysregulated, so they search for immediate, short-term solutions to their problems. Healing the nervous system from dysre...
What Would the World Look Like if We Had Regulated Nervous Systems?

What Would the World Look Like if We Had Regulated Nervous Systems? In this video Benjamin Fry explores why our dysregulated nervous systems mean that we live on a dangerous planet. A regulated nervous system understands the level of threat, or lack thereof, in the environment, and isn’t subject to residual baggage influencing day to day behaviour. If we all regulated our nervous systems the wo...
Regulation of the Nervous System

This short video explains how we can re-regulate the nervous system which can almost create a shield around the wounded part of ourselves. In freeing ourselves from a dysregulated nervous system, an important step is learning how to reframe our experiences and manage our triggers, reactions, and baggage. We need to do this so that we are no longer subject to learned ways of behaviour that negat...
Relationships and Nervous System Regulation
Переглядів 6973 роки тому
Relationships and connection are crucial for human happiness and for our survival. The way we react to our triggers can cause complications in our relationships and lead to arguments or unfulfillment. A nervous system that is dysregulated will cause enough trouble on its own. However, when you bring two dysregulated nervous systems together, you get more than double trouble. This is commonly kn...
Boundaries Allow Us to Free Ourselves from a Dysregulated Nervous System
Переглядів 3813 роки тому
Boundaries enable us to reframe our experiences and manage our triggers, reactions, and baggage. By doing this we can gain control of our reactions to our triggers which have a negative impact on the lives of trauma sufferers. It’s easy to consider ourselves the victim in situations that trigger us and make us feel unsafe, but there is very little we can do to control what life throws at us. Wh...
Our Baggage Causes us to Under or Over React to Threat

People who form healthy attachments dont resort to killing living beings that they can "no longer afford"
I'm sure that is true. Attachments are important for so many healthy life experiences.
Is anyone at all shocked that this white British animal abuse enabler directly steals and profits from dharma? Of course this sicko has "guided meditations" on his website... Leave it to a pasty bald stinking brit to steal concepts and teachings from the most vegetarian communities on earth and then turn around and pathologize the lack of a desire to kill animals!
But let's be real- the question is rhetorical because this loser has no audience and no one knows who this bloke even is
Benjamin is a digusting abhorrent excuse of a man, and Oxford should be ashamed to have this unempathetic freak among their alumni
Ugh! Was lost without this video. Thank.
Thank you for the kind feedback
All of this can be complicated to resolve when there are actual (perceived) threats in the present environment - say, you're scared of dying from Covid or, you're not scared of Covid but you're scared of government overreach and vax mandates ... either way, you're in a state of flight-fight which links up with your pre-existing fears and intensifies your dysregulation. How does one regulate under such circumstances ... it's hard.
Being regulated means matching your threat response to the actual level of threat you are experiencing. Of course, being able to tell what the latter is is the hard part! Being in fight-flight when being chased by a lion is a good thing.
Keep it up Ben ,
Thanks so much. Will do!
Brilliant
Thank you!
Got this after taking the vaccine
Great explanation - the book is fab and definitely worth reading as it explains the nervous system in a simpler way which then explains why we react to things but more importantly how we can heal. AS a mind body practitioner I will recommend this book
Thank you so much!
this is fantastic - so insightful and makes such sense, thank you, heading over to the website now :))
Thank you!!
Hello. I wrote several months ago about my longing to participate in the Clinic. I spoke with Tracy two weeks ago; there is no way I can receive treatment there or at the Meadow. Not the correct insurance, and I'm poor. I had Lumbar Fusion Surgery a month ago: $271,000,00. for 8 inpatient days. Paid. And my heart and spirit ought to go. They hurt too much but who cares?
I'm really sorry to hear of your troubles. Funding is a very deep problem for treatment.
Thank you, both. Very helpful. A great listener makes for a much more open and informative speaker.
Thank you!
Lookin’ well! Glad to see you doing so well
Thank you
Hi Benjamin! I am a victim of sever trauma that includes early and continued sexual abuse, physical and psychological torture and the inherent emotional neglect that comes with it. All this happen in the settings of the cult I was born and grew up in. I was extremely fragmented and operating from constant states of flight/fight mode and PTSD symptoms. I figured out that I was able to survive all this because I coped by developing DID. I live now from a stabilized state comparing to from where I started but I would like to share my story and my journey with specialist who actually understand about trauma. I have been in a normal psychiatrist clinic and it is horrible. It actually traumatizes further people. I would like to work with someone from your clinic and I contacted the one you have in London but I don´t have the conditions to move and go there. Nonetheless and I brought myself to the point that I am ready to share what I learn about trauma, what it is called mental health disorders and contact people in the field. I know I still have ¨things¨ to integrate but I am working with my nervous system in order to attune to a different state of being, vibrationally speaking now that the states of fear, despair, loneliness, abandonment and powerless are processed and I am being intuitively guided that I need let people in to do so to get the relational aspect of trauma healed but at the same time it needs to be with people who understand the dimension and the extension of the work I did and the reality I came from. I hope to hear from you because I have searched and searched and I haven´t seen anything or anyone similar to the work that your clinic and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk are developing. If you are interesting in giving an opportunity to listen to what I have to say I would deeply appreciate it. Thank you very much! Best regards, Sara. (I left this comment in another video but I noticed it is from 4 years ago so I will copy past it in here)
Hello. I'm sorry that this message was not read sooner. We actually specialise in DID at our residential clinic. It would be great if you would get in touch via our website?

Wow!!! A perspective on mental health I hadn't considered before, I will be buying the book, great insights, thank you.
So perfectly describes my reality. "We add the new charge to the previous, UNFINISHED charge." I've had a series of huge charges over the last 2 yrs and feel like my charge never goes down.
Anyone who has survived "porridge" in an English boarding school would know a thing or two about constant 24/7 vigilance, being "hard-wired" for threat detection and the challenge of finding an off switch for the body's built-in threat and alarm system.
Thank you for posting this. I found it incredibly helpful. So many things resonated with me. You are extremely eloquent and courageous to talk about your story in the way that you did. Everything you said made perfect sense. I am also reading the book "How we Break by Deary which I also find helpful in understanding how we break down under stress.
You are so welcome!
This is so brilliantly articulated! Thank you. Have just discovered your resources. Amazing. ps I think you work in the same building as my husband! What a coincidence! (No.10😮).
Thank you so much for your kind feedback! I'm really glad you find it useful.
Excellent Every psychiatrist in the nation needs to be required to study this simple video BEFORE jumping to diagnosis and medication
I completely agree :). That's why I wrote the book so that at least their patients could know it. Thank you for the kind feedback.
Absolutely no psychiatrist on earth should ever take anything this freak say seriously What kind of sick man encourages people to kill their own animals to save money? What kind of freak encourages a woman to take photos while lying in his coffin? I can 100% guarantee his suggestions are NOT evidence-based
Thank you, great explanation.
You are welcome. Thank you for the feedback
Fifteen years and no comments? I guess nobody made this into a TV series. Would you consider reviving this idea for UA-cam?
Yes I think that's a great idea! We were clearly ahead of our time. You can contact me through www.benjaminfry.co.uk
@@BenjaminFryI agree a great idea for those do not mind oversharing and broadcasting personal laundry. I think the idea is like the Jeremy Kyle Show, the only difference is the frog is slowly being boiled.😊.
Thank you!! You’ve created exactly what is truly needed!! And given Hope!
You are so welcome
thank you Benjamin. Such a great explanation. Could you maybe expand your theory on how to deal with a shame?..Is it simply view as Freeze reaction?...Isn´t exploring perhaps ones identity/role/narrative about Self formed in a childhood adapting to unhealthy environment necessary to resolved it?..thank you
I think that complex emotions such as shame are a later evolution than, say, fear or anger. As I understand it they help keep groups in optimum conditions for survival by establishing norms and therefore shaming members who stray from them. So it is probably a bit more complicated than this explanation which helps to understand the basics of the nervous system and how that affects relationships and health.
Awesome. Thank you for this inspired and insightful gift to Humanity, & contribution to the innate quest for freedom, self knowledge, fulfilment, empowerment & growth of individual Human Beings, without which there cannot be peace on earth. But you seriously need to collaborate with an illustrator : )
Thank you! The goal was for the drawings to be able to be replicated by anyone, so I was modelling doing them badly but still with meaning :)
Beautifully explained, thank you.
Thank you for your kind feedback!
Aawee would be so proud of you.
Thank you so much. That means a lot xxx
Thank you.
I wonder if he had akathisia, or some kind of withdrawal symptoms. Maybe ketamine would've helped, or an acid trip. I'm glad he got the help he needed in Arizona.
Thanks for your kind wishes. I had PTSD from early childhood, so it was complicated!
This video repeats itself in the middle⁉️
Thank you. ☺️
While attempting to do CBT, I sensed that this is just another way to continue endless fight which was already going on in mind against something more powerful than my reasoning. I just did not know what it was. Thanks for the video.
After watching tons of other videos on UA-cam on topic and feeling completely disorientated, this one just felt right. There was no push to buy expensive courses nor even mentioning of buying the book. Remarkable. So, I bought the book and looking forward to receiving it and reading. Thank you
Where can I find more information on how to fix this? You seemed to nail exactly what’s going on with me. I keep trying to gather all the crumbs of exactly how I got to the dysregulation that I’m experiencing. I feel in over my head trying to figure out how to heal.
This lady has some great videos on it if you go from oldest to newest and start at the beginning. ua-cam.com/video/RPyzPH8sB2/v-deo.html Patrick Teehan is also great. Both helped me SO much xx
have a look at www.theinvisiblelion.com
@creationoflove84 the crappy childhood fairy
Background music is distracting. I have listened go several things that Benjamin has done and his thoughts truly resonate with me and the challenge in older age of handling my Complex PTSD from childhood neglect and abuse in better ways. I will be exploring more of his work through his books.
Keep up the videos, just speak a bit louder. The content is great for ur target audience. Ted Talk-like lectures are a thing too, esp when the masses have a lot of self help interest
Love this dialogue. well put. I can personally attest to this being true
Thank you 💗
What are the best modalities regulating the nervous system
Usually somatic therapies, like Somatic Experiencing or Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Polyvagal Informed approaches
Hi thanks for the video but it finished prematurely x
This has been so helpful to me. Thank you for being so honest and open
thank you for sharing your experience
Could I please ask, does crying help discharge trauma?
Yes Tears also release toxins
It depends on what else is going on. It is better to ask if while discharging trauma some tears might be common, to which the answer is yes. But the process starts with the body and then can move into emotions, memories, thoughts and movement.
It amazes me how it's difficult to find a therapist that can actually help. Wish this was more taught.
SE and TRE is pretty much everything you need
Thanks for posting Excellent
Excellent
Excellent
Brilliant example
This is very interesting video thank you
