Planting Eucalyptus in Autumn 🍂
Переглядів 143Місяць тому
Has its advantages: - Surrounding vegetation is dying back, while Eucalyptus are evergreen grow all year. - Pests die off or are less prevalent, though fungal infections are more so. - No Hydration issues - Any feed you give the freshly planted seedlings is more likely to be taken up by them and not the surrounding vegetation. Well nourished and hydrated trees are better able to fight off pests...

ua-cam.com/video/SWXdOYUqTss/v-deo.htmlsi=cYU05b_EjBkVZWC2 curious on your opinion on this type of Euc management for species that don't coppice well like Nitens. Might be a way to get rapid re-growth of firewood sized material without a lignotuber.
Very interesting 🤔 I have a few up the back which were blown over in the gales, but just kept growing. A gunnii and I think a dalrympleana, so varieties which could be coppiced anyway. I've seen so many Eucalyptus trees on there side and growing branches straight up, definitely worth experimenting with a few. Thanks for letting me know 👍🏻 🍀

I know its fun and cute to feed him, but it's not good. They need to learn how to find their own food and not rely on humans.
The main thing I love about him is that he is independent ! I don't feed him regularly, generally he finds his own food. Interestingly he made the first approaches when he was a cub ! sauntering around in the small back lawn. Despite being a cub, and at that time I didn't feed him at all; he is well capable of hunting and taking car of himself. I was astonished to see him so big and healthy that other day, after not having seen or fed him for over three weeks 😮 Hope this helps 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell We're cool.

Thanks, this is useful. I use Bosch tools at work, but looking at Einhell to fill in some gaps in the toolbox possibly.
I'm happy with the quality and durability of Einhell tools, I have several of them 😉
Would be interesting to do some intentional breeding with so many species flowering, would love to see Nitens crossed with Subcrenulata.
I think it unlikely there will be a choice of which varieties cross. From early research I did, Eucalyptus cross pollinate readily, though a comment from another Eucalyptus grower suggested that they tend to remain true to producing tree, i.e. seed capsules on the Nitens will produce Nitens seed. Guess we'll have to wait and see... Subscribe to be notified when I get to that stage. Good luck 🍀 meantime.

beautiful winter fairytale landscape 🥶🥰. When you consider that it is officially still autumn. It's a shame that a few branches have broken off.
The snow is beautiful 😎 though it won't last for long, probably will all be melted by tomorrow evening. Saturday night forecast to be 15℃ 😮 Thanks for taking the time Stefan 👍🏻 🍀
they are well known for their robust look though not fire tolerant unlike most of their relatives
They are one of those that are aided in their germination by fire. Young Regnans forests are all about the same height, because they all germinate after a wild fire has passed through 😉 Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Subscribers help apparently, so if you aren't already 🙏🏻 🍀
please tell me what kind of frost your eucalyptus trees withstood?
It was perhaps -8℃ during the cold weather towards the end of 2022, though most of the damage was done by the freezing fog which covered the leaves in verglas. Those trees which were exposed to sunlight during the day, thawing the verglas were largely unaffected. While those trees in shadier areas where the verglas was permanent for around seven days were damaged, though most recovered. I'm on a north facing slope, any plantations of the same varieties on a south facing slop would probably survive more severe frosts. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchellthanks for the answer. I live in Russia in the city of Krasnodar. I have Eugalyptus ganna growing. I sprouted the seeds of eucalyptus subcrenulata and will try to grow it in my region If you cover the eucalyptus with polytilene, it can withstand frost well. Ganna survived - 15 but was covered with torn polyethylene film
Nice set up.must get myself one of those fancy axes I love splitting by hand I find it faster than the log splitter I just throw a tire on the ground where I've cut the tree and fire it all into a trailer ,that way I touch the wood one less time .hopefully get some fire wood done whit this cold weather coming up Enjoy the videos fair play
Thanks for the encouragement SuperKeen 👍🏻 Will be nice when my trees get to a size I can harvest from them, though I think I'll be buying logs to process for a while yet. Thanks again and good luck 🍀
Will go quite same way next year - with Paulownia at the West Kery area. Probably will try to germinating them at home and sunroom early spring. Only place in the garden where I have some sun is a pretty dump. Will see :)

I tried some shantong paulownia, not impressed with them, in the midlands UK.
Planted a few varieties here, hybrids like ShanTong and naturals like Elongata. They need warmer and drier conditions is my verdict. I'll persevere with the Foutunei and Elongata, though only around the sceptic tank area, Eucalyptus everywhere else, they grow happily here for the most part. Just found your channel. It's fun to watch a different reality. Paulownia Tomentosa flowered on the second growing season here in Southern Brazil (Santa Catarina state). We do get frosts here but it's a very short and milder winter compared to Ireland. Growing season is much longer and sunnier. The tree is 5 meters tall now and it was planted in September 2022. I'll upload a video of it later today.
Thanks for taking the time thumbs 👍🏻 I'm on a North facing slope exposed to the cold damp northerly winds. I would expect better results on a sheltered south facing slope. That's interesting to hear that yours flowered after only a couple of years ! I've searched frequently and the information suggested from 3 to 15 years. I'll check out your channel now for the Paulownia video 😉 Good luck 🍀
Aqui en Galicia la borrasca Kirk soplo a 100 en mis eucaliptos y muchos acabaron en el suelo.¿Tienes algun plan para volver a ponerlos de pie? Tienen 2 años nitens
Storm Barra was the most severe storm here and quite a few of the Viminalis and Nitens blew down. I cut them back and some of the Viminalis recovered to some extent, though none of the Nitens. Storm Barra was in November, so not a growing season. I think more would have survived if it had been late spring. Generally I have a don't interfere policy, it they blew down or aren't hardy enough to survive the frosts, I replant with a variety I think will do better. Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell thaks for your time.
Dig them out and start again,Eucalyptus are not suitable for windy areas, loads of accidents in OZ when they snap off during storms
Had quite a few storms here, Storm Barra was ferocious, probably gusts in excess of 100kph. A few badly planted ones were uprooted, some Viminalis regenerated, too early in the year for the Nitens to bounce back. The only one that snapped was a Regnans and that was due to some very wet heavy snow; I should have given it a good shake to dislodge the weight, ces't la vie 😏 Probably they have so much hydration available here; they are incredibly flexible. Storm Barra had them horizontal 😮 Thanks for sharing though 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀
Hi greg have you tryed potting on the eucalyptus to a bigger size ,so you don't have to do much weed control
Tried that the first year SuperKeen, but the stoney ground here meant it was a mission to plant them 😏 Would have taken me a couple of days to plant the 70 that I planted in less than an hour in the video. That said, I've changed my mind about the Paulownia, and will be growing them onto a metre tall before planting out. They need that start to escape the slugs here 😏 Thanks again for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
Love a good storm
They can be spectacular SuperKeen 😁 No car at the moment, or I'd have driven to Killkee where you can walk along the top of the cliffs. Been before very dramatic. Not too severe here, though I am sheltered from the South westerlies. As always, thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 🍀
Thanks for the update, Craig. Just wondering how deep Eucalypt roots go. have to be deep to support those beauties when matire. I'll say that mic you are using is good quality, top class in there conditions.
Thanks 👍🏻 Eucalyptus roots can go as deep as 20m 😮 though with plenty of hydration here in Ireland, perhaps a few metres. It isn't the wind that is the issue its wet ground which is slippery not just on the surface, and the roots pull lose more easily. Ground here is quite dry at the moment. The rain from Ashley is starting now, though the wind is forecast to decrease around the time 8pm local, so they should be fine 🤞🏻 Strongest gust so far 64kph Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 🍀
Thanks for the update. This summer I planted 2-300 gunnii on a former power station clinker ash tip, steep slope, no soil, plated right in the middle of summer during the heat wave and drought, only lost 3 or 4 of them, and tbf they did get a bit dry in their cell trays before planting, unbelievably hardy plants.
That's quite phenomenal evojigger, I wouldn't have thought they'd have survived growing conditions as hostile as that 😮 Gunnii are thought to be better in dryer conditions, but still, I'm surprised they grew in coal 'presumably' ash ! Thanks as always for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell Shocked me how well they have taken. I made the mistake of putting miracle grow in their cells after putting the seedlings in the cell trays during spring. They got too tall so quickly I had to plant them, hence middle of the summer planting. Its coal clinker, imagine volcanic gravel.
No issues with planting Eucalyptus during the summer. The first year I did this, I made sure to plant at least one Eucalyptus in every month of the year, even if it was dry. Made little difference 😉 Though I'm sure there are limits, wet in Ireland is a relative term. I imagined coal clinker to be corrosive, but perhaps it was washed over the years and therefore now provides a good free draining growing medium; still I'm very surprised by your results, thanks for letting us all know 👍🏻 🍀
very nice
If you're going to split firewood buy a log splitter! especially for softwoods which don't split quite as snappily as hardwoods. Also (as Craig mentions) split your firewood first, drying will proceed so much faster and much more thoroughly.
Very Nice Video
Guess I'm gonna be the first one to comment..anyway nice to meet ya!

I've had the stove on a few times, burning the Spruce and Larch in the latest video; it may still be a bit damp, though I'd still rather be burning Eucalyptus 🪵 If you plant a wide range of Eucalyptus varieties, then as I say, the bees will have proper food more or less all year. Eucalyptus flowers are much better food for them, than sugar substitutes 🐝 Thanks once again for taking the time SuperKeen 👍🏻 🍀

That a pet fox wow
Wouldn't describe the fox as a pet, but certainly doesn't mind me 🙂
I’m very impressed by your hot bed . . and very jealous ! I must also say that you have a marvellous fox for a friend. I live in north Shropshire and I feed a fox each night but it’s far less bold than yours is and I only ever see it on my trail camera (probably because foxes in these parts are so badly persecuted). My fox has an egg, dog chews and peanuts every night. I also leave out dog or cat food but the fox doesn’t go near that so it gets eaten by a hedgehog and a feral cat.
Soil warming cables are still working 🙂 I'll be making a few modifications in the next few months, subscribe to be notified 😉 The fox is fabulous, and still comes round every night and sometimes during the day, especially early on this year, pretty sure it had a family to feed. Thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀

Thanks for letting everyone know, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
How to add more hooks to the tracking.?
Add more gliders first. I still have some left, get in touch from my web site 😉
Interesting but not surprising. They can get ill, and they need black ground. When they are small, they hate grass and weeds. Remember that they can last easy 70 years and 8 cuttings. Snails are a problem I see. This is the first time I’ve seen this, so thanks for the sharing!
Thanks Gerard I've recently started feeding a few and that's made a big difference to them ! None of my stock was doing well until I increased the nitrogen. I think there is another factor with the ones down the bottom, other than the sun and the wind and I'll update with more information in the next Paulownia video... Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell depending on what you want from your trees you want them to grow. If you want to sell wood in the future, it’s now that you produce a strong root system. Spreading a little charcoal on the ground will help. For trees it’s best to cut them back in the spring when they start to grow! Feed them and leave one stem/ plant. Create a big trunk in one year. Even create a glasshouse like situation with plastic animal protection. Take them from there.
@@gerardvriend729 Not sure I'll ever get salable wood Gerard, perhaps some small pieces for my own projects. The initial reason for planting them was for additional firewood, though Eucalyptus are much faster growing and ongoing research suggested that Paulownia aren't as good firewood. So, my current vision is to let the area grow dense, pruning the lower shoots to create an amusing labyrinth that will be interesting to walk around underneath the huge leaves. Also flowers for bees I recon I can get the slower growers to improve with fertiliser and more attention to vegetation control. Interesting what you say about the charcoal 🤔 I'll start dumping out the ashes from the fire around them this winter (I only burn wood) Did you watch the latest video ? which has some content about the Paulownia ua-cam.com/video/vi-ePUYag3w/v-deo.html Are you growing Paulownia here in Ireland ? Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell the ashes are absolutely not preferable! The ph and structure are not so good for the soil. I’m not from Ireland, I’m Dutch. We bought a terrain in Portugal for this purpose. So I’m interested in learning about Paulonia. We want to plant kinds with flowers on the outside and inside a kind without. Purely for the wood. Some people say fertilizer is not needed. Some say there’s no problem with slugs. Mouse can be a problem, Phytophora can also be a problem. Water can kill the trees, even after 4 years I saw. It burns fine I hear, but I would rather turn it in to charcoal!
@@gerardvriend729 Point taken about the ashes. I do quite a lot of woodworking and have been spreading the saw dust around them. As in the last video, they definitely need feeding ! I have a tame fox which keeps the Hares away, they would definitely be an issue ! Check back though the videos to see the one on slugs, they were a huge issue during this past unusually wet year June 23 to April 24. I've found the roots rot if they are exposed to standing water, and that may have been a factor affecting growth this past year, though also the colder than usual temperatures and I'm on a north facing slope shaded from the sun and exposed to strong cold Northerly winds. (I've started planting hardy wind resilient Eucalyptus to protect them) I do have quite a few field mice here during the winter, though they don't seem to be interested in the Paulownia. I don't have any issues with disease as I've grown them all from seed, no bought in plants; I'm not a fan of clones, preferring biodiversity. I'm sure the Paulownia you plant in warmer sunnier Portugal will thrive. Thanks again 👍🏻 🍀
What size drill bit do you use and wall plugs?

Today I saw my favorite Paulownia, she is already about 4 meters and she is in the midst of growth in Tralee, she is 2 years old and she is going to be industrialized for me :) but time will tell. I dug a 60 cm deep hole, I threw a lot of woody remains of grass and eyebrows into the bottom of the hole with peat and sprinkled everything with chicken manure, my beautiful Paulownia is greedily devouring all these resources now
Paulownia are certainly hungry trees. I will be feeding the new plantings with the rich nitrogen feed regularly. Also will be more diligent with the vegetation control. I think the wind protection that the Eucalyptus provide will be helpful for those down the bottom of the slope to the north. Thanks for taking the time Andrew 👍🏻 Much appreciated 🍀

Do you have cloned Paulownias and saw a difference? Do you know how they clone Paulownia? Do they pick the best mother plant with the best genes they know of and then clone it? Do you plan on making a Plantage?
And from which country did the clones come that all died?
Hi Rolf All of my Paulownia are grown from seed. Several are seed from cloned varieties and I do notice a difference in growth. From what I've researched so far, you clone them from root cuttings, though I will try stem shoot cuttings first. Not sure what you mean by Plantage 🤔 could you clarify 🙏🏻 Thanks for taking the time 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell I meant plantation
@@rofl970 Ah OK Rolf 🙂 I have about 120 Paulownia planted, and will add another 40 of Elongate and Fortunei (natural varieties) and that will complete my small plantation. Other than perhaps Bee and possibly livestock fodder, I currently don't see Paulownia as a commercial tree for Ireland. Winters are too wet, and summers too cool. Thanks for taking the time 🍀
@@Craig-Mitchell that’s cool. I’m interested in seeing you cloning them. Are you going to choose the fastest growing paulownia and then do the cloning? And when you do root cuttings for cloning how are you going to cut a big root like that? You’ll probably have to dig deep to… All the best
Hey thanks you’re a punkin!
Hi there! Can you tell me what soil you have for them?
I use peat based compost to germinate and propagate. Hope this helps 🙂 Good luck 🍀
It's a pain in the butt to take the chain off to sharpen, and of course you need power and a bench. the Dremel wins hands down. I have used it for years. And of course you can use it in the field because it's battery power.
The Dremel makes it so quick and easy, and the edge I'm getting is very sharp and consistent. Very pleased with it 🙂 Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated 👍🏻 Good luck 🍀
