  • A mountain bike and hike up Slieve Kimalta (Keepers Hill) from Knockanroe car park to the west of Silvermines village, historically known as Bellagowan.
    In Irish Gaelic "Sliabh Coimeálta"
    The area in Irish Gaelic "Sliabh an Airgid" or Sliabh an Airgead" literally "Mountain the Money" Mountain of money; airgid's meaning was originally "Silver metal", then used to describe silver money specifically, and later money generally.
    Mining took place in the area from the time of the Romans.
    Commercially for Silver and Lead from the 17th century.
    A large Baryte deposit was discovered in 1949, and later a substantial ore body containing 10% Lead and Zinc, which was mined in a modern industrial sense.
