    I use Alkaline buffer with Acid buffer and go for a KH of 5 which is 14g in 20 gallons of water. So to get a 7PH I add 7g of acid buffer. When I do this, my PH rises to 8 every time. I have tested the water separately to make sure it was not something in my aquarium. After 24 hours of addition, it rises. My RO water after 24 hours goes from a 6 to 6.4PH and stays there. Not sure why alkaline buffer does this. I saw that the Sodium Bicarbonate will do this as that is what this buffer is.

    • @BigFishLittleFishAquatics
      @BigFishLittleFishAquatics Місяць тому

      Hello, These products require continual dosing over days (will be different for each person) to lock your pH - I belive it says this on the packaging (but don't have to hand to verify... if you already have a set pH in the water your aquarium will naturally balance back to whatever that is if you haven't locked it down. Without a source of Acid in your aquarium too, the pH can sometimes fluctuate.

    • @BigFishLittleFishAquatics
      @BigFishLittleFishAquatics Місяць тому

      If your source water is as close to 0ppm as possible then yes you can. You might struggle with tap however as there is typically lots of buffering content within it :)

    The problem people are having using Alkaline Buffer with Acid Buffer is pH drift. After adding enough Acid Buffer to the water and getting the pH desired, within a a day or so the pH drifts back up to 8. Explain how to deal with that please.

    Also 50 gallons is not a small tank, even for a ghost fish. Maybe if he's 19 inches long, but have you seen one that's nice and inches long or do you own one that's nice and inches long? That's probably pretty rare

    • @BigFishLittleFishAquatics
      @BigFishLittleFishAquatics 3 місяці тому

      I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one...50 Gallon would be too small for even a smaller 12 inch Knife, in my opinion. It's about providing quality of life for the fish and there wouldn't be much swimming space. It's a common myth that fish only grow to the size of their tank, which unfortunately leads to many fish being incorrectly kept in small aquariums. Thanks for watching :)

    • @pchykins6680
      @pchykins6680 2 місяці тому

      Please don't make comments if you're not learned of such matters. It's not rare for a Black Ghost to reach 15 inches or more in an aquarium...by the time they reach 12 inches (around 18 months if well fed and in good water conditions), a 50 gallon tank is VERY small...you need bigger tank that is at least 24" in width since these are fish with stiff bodies. They cannot turn around easily.

  • @justinclement5417

    How rare is a breeding pair of gkf? And how would you know initially as I believe sexing is quite difficult?

    • @justinclement5417
      @justinclement5417 3 місяці тому

      No they breed like rabbits, ghost fish rabbits that is. They're actually omnisexual so you only need one. Two males or two females will do it as well so it doesn't really matter you'll end up with babies it's faster than you can blink your eyes, believe that as much as 50 gal aquarium is small

    • @BigFishLittleFishAquatics
      @BigFishLittleFishAquatics 3 місяці тому

      They are difficult, next to impossible to sex as they do not show any sexual dimorphism. It can be risky in aquariums (depending on size) too as males are known to fight especially as they mature. I believe farm breeders keep them in large ponds, however minimum tank size for a pair would start at around the 200 gallon mark. Being nocturnal, you can bet that mating takes place at night, where eggs are laid, which if left will be eaten.

    • @pchykins6680
      @pchykins6680 2 місяці тому

      You can only tell they are male or female if they are fully matured; or had grown to a relatively larger size. Males usually have "horse-like" features, smaller eyes and a complete stripe at the back (though sometimes they don't). Females tend to have plump bellies, rounder head structure, bigger eyes and are mostly black (though mine have a half-stripe at the spine).

    Hi I’m looking at switching over to RO water for my freshwater tropical tank. Is there any danger when introducing it to an existing tank? My concern is how the fish adapt to the suddenly (better) different water conditions

    • @BigFishLittleFishAquatics
      @BigFishLittleFishAquatics 3 місяці тому

      There can be a danger to your existing inhabitants if you change too much and create too much of a shift in parameters that they are used to. My recommendation is to adjust slowly through water changes :) (c. 20% at a time)

    Wood loom a slightly dirty bottom, over a lighty graveled bottom.. Gravel only on one side of the tank where most of the loom will be stuck. Feeding Good flake food take a pinch submerge flake in fingers till it sinks.. One pinch on other end of tank.. The catfish baby's with be seen after a few weeks and more as they grow.. But at first they will be camouflage under the Two hardwood leaves..

    i think my shrimp is pregnant, her belly is very big. But seeing some floating tiny moving brown stuff around her...don't think it's daphnia. A bit worried. will keep checking on her
