"War Pigs" by Black Sabbath: Rock Drummer Reviews
Black Sabbath’s War Pigs isn’t just a classic metal anthem-it’s a powerful statement on war, politics, and the corruption of power that still resonates today. In this reaction, I break down the iconic track from their early days, exploring its anti-war message and the timeless relevance of its lyrics. With its crushing riffs, haunting vocals, and groundbreaking sound, War Pigs remains one of the most influential songs in rock and metal history. Is history repeating itself? Join me for an in-depth review of this legendary track, and let’s discuss how its themes continue to echo in modern times!
Lyrics:
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerer of death's construction
In the fields, the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
Poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh lord, yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning
Ashes where their bodies burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgement, God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing, spreads his wings
Oh lord, yeah!

Ho sempre immaginato che in questo brano ci fosse stata la collaborazione di Jeff Porcaro.....invece no ! Genio e maestria di Terry Wliams...la sua batteria e una ballata continuativa....meravigliosa 😊
About the Falkland war.
Led Zeppelin was always more than rock to me. They just had things wrapped up in a certain kind of mystery that made it more like magic.
Listened to this song every morning on the bus to school for a while
Zep always shined on their acoustic stuff. One of the reasons they are so loved
Que nada... Portanto né enhuma
Growing up on the northern edge of this ecosystem, it didn't seem strange to have to beware of cacti and rattlesnakes. Now I realize how special and unique this region is!!
The album art throws people off but I love it!
@@xavierrose8208 she’s smooth.
With her being 6.0 L really Rare it is also a 6 Speed
I was there too, all the way from Rotterdam to Hammersmith Odeon Stadium London in 1983 👍👍 it was worth crossing 'the Dire Straits' (what means The Channel between UK and Netherlands)
Bonjour, les pistols ont inventé le punk rock, leur musique est unique et de n'avoir fait qu'un seul album va avec cette idéologie.
Interesting take. Thanks for watching.
If you're only doing 2 songs, you really should play "Hand of Doom". It's about a Vietnam vet who turns to Heroin and all that entails. It's every bit as good as War Pigs. If you do play it, you should play it straight through into "Rat Salad", it's a follow on instrumental and drum solo. Pure greatness.
Thank you for watching! 'Hand of Doom' sounds powerful, especially with its heavy themes. I'll keep your suggestion in mind-playing them straight through seems like the best way to appreciate them fully.
I really hope you go to the beginning with the song "Black Sabbath" from the album Black Sabbath. They got better with every song. Thanks for the great reaction.
Starting with "Black Sabbath" sounds like the perfect way to dive into their roots. Appreciate the suggestion!
NOT ONE OF, but Thee BEST EVER!!!!

It’s such a stunning drive. Ubatuba is beautiful, isn’t it? Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers! 🇧🇷🇨🇦
Zappa also had John Lennon and Yoko Ono perform with him. What they created was supposed to be shared. Lennon ended up using it, removed Zappa from any credits, and replaced him with Ono. So, John Lennon ripped off Frank Zappa.
@@johntomasik1555 Yes, I saw an interview with Zappa and he articulates in the way only he can how Lennon was super sketchy stealing his work. Thanks for sharing.
Are you in Rio?
All genres he sings about are American!🇺🇸
That's a great observation! The lyrics definitely highlight American music genres like jazz and rock, celebrating their influence. But, where is Spanish City:) ? - Thank you for watching!

Nothing about WarPigs is adult only. Kids can enjoy Ozzy the same as anyone
the good old days
Nothing remotely like this will ever be produced again. Sad, really. But we have video:)
I first noticed Dire Straits on the strength of the Money for Nothing video. I bought the album and was blown away by the rest of it. First listen of this song and I knew I was a fan for life. Got the privilege of seeing Mark in concert with a great band. Not the Straits but it did include Terry Williams on drums. This was the first song of the encore and it blew me away as it does every time I've heard it.
A game-changer, wasn't it? That video hooked so many of us, but then the whole album just seals the deal. And getting to see Mark Knopfler live, even if not with Dire Straits, must've been incredible, especially with Terry Williams on drums. Kicking off the encore with that song? Pure magic
Anti abortion!!
Except who gives a fuck anyway? Because nobody cares song.
That's a real balls out jam for Entwistle and Moon. Those guys are just improvising on this one, and going hell for leather. It works great with the much tighter instrumentation from Townshend and vocals from Daltrey. Definitely about some of the mental issues young men experience, even the most well adjusted when there is such social pressure as a young teenager just past puberty.
Entwistle and Moon really let loose, eh? Their improvisation is wild, and it meshes so well with Townshend's precision and Daltrey's vocals. And yeah, the song digs deep into the psyche of young men dealing with the pressures of adolescence. It's like a raw, high-energy exploration of identity and mental health.
A Masterpiece.
Totally agree, "Brothers in Arms" live is nothing short of a masterpiece. The emotion, the musicianship - it's all there in full force.
Spider was a reference to a song he wrote and did lead vocals, Boris the Spider. His nicknames were ‘the Ox’ for his constitution and ‘Thunderfingers’ for his technique. Rated as bass player of the century, he was the first rock musician to do solos and to play lead. Certainly the most influential bass player of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. And he only got better in the 90’s and up to his death in 2002.
'Thunderfingers' couldn't be more fitting. Pioneering solos and lead bass parts in rock. His influence spanned decades, and he just kept getting better, a true titan. Like Zep's John P Jones, soooo underated, and rarely talked about.
Nice take on an amazing live performance! I’m 72 years old. The studio version is subdued compared to this Live Performance. They ALL were masters craftsmen but playing as one…and having a GREAT time doing it as you mentioned! Good job! Enjoy your input on the Drummer! 👍👍 Two Thumb’s Up!
Thanks for the kind words! At 72, you've seen some of the best live music out there. The live version from Alchemy really does capture the magic of Dire Straits at their peak, doesn't it? They were like a well-oiled machine but still having a blast. Glad you enjoyed the drummer commentary - he's a key part of that magic! I also think the studio version is quite pleasant.
Known this song since I was 10 in 1977 but as I matured I was in no doubt this was neither pro or anti abortion but more to do with not having self governance and more so about women with mental health issues and how she would have been treated and judged in 1970s Britain mental health system.
We're the same age. It's a reminder of how music can evolve in meaning as we grow. Your interpretation highlights a time when mental health was more stigmatized. It's a powerful commentary wrapped in punk's rebellious sound. Thanks for sharing this perspective; it's a testament to the song's lasting impact.
@llarose When you think of John Lydons age at this time his lyrics are amazing and later his music with PiL for good or bad shows he was a complete original .
Actually the female voice you hear is that of Ellen Foley who sang the part on the album. The lady in the video is Karla DeVito who sang the part during the tour backing the album. They had originally planned on having Ellen reproduce her part on the tour but she had just signed for a season of acting on the sit-com Night Court so she wasn't available and Karla was hired for the tour. When they decided to do the video, Ellen was still unavailable so, since Karla knew the song probably better than Ellen did, they brought her in to lip sync the original recording. Both of these ladies are still recording
Thanks for the history lesson! I had no idea about the switch from Ellen Foley to Karla DeVito. It's fascinating how these things work out behind the scenes, and kudos to Karla for stepping up (big time) for both the tour and the video. Great to hear they're both still active in music!
This song is simply based on something that happened. In Britain you don't have to be "pro" or "anti" a particular subject you're allowed to see both sides or just accept a thing for what it is. 🙂 Top tune though 🙂
Listen to this. Stick Figure - Paradise. It's beautiful reggae!

Firsy Saw them in 91. Pearl Jam opened for them..skipped PJ. Didnt know who they were lol. Still have my Roll the Bones shirt. I miss the 5-15 minute montage of songs they would do for an encore. Was really cool. But back then they only did 1.5 hour shows. 😊. But loved the 3 hour shows better.
Skipping Pearl Jam to see Rush in their prime - talk about priorities! That Roll the Bones shirt is probably worth its weight in gold now. And those encores, right? Quality over quantity - those 1.5-hour shows were packed with pure Geddy, Alex, and Neil magic. Still, nothing beats a 3-hour Rush marathon. Thanks for the blast from the past!
