Upper Body Exercise Routine For Runners - Beginner to Advanced
Non Vibram altra are hot trash from what I've seen.
Certainly can't beat Vibram for grip. The Altra maxtrac outsole is very good but durability is lacking
Are they breathable, I don’t care about waterproof, I want my feet to breathe
I wouldn't say they're exceptionally breathable, but I haven't had any issues in that area yet either. Sorry that's probably not a great answer but I suppose with trail shoes they prioritize protection over breathability
This is the stuff I was doing in my youth. Thanks for posting this
Thanks mate! I hope it helps a lot of people 😁 cheers
Hey team! Welcome to the routine Perform 2 sets of the warm up and then one of the following options: perform exercises 2 - 9 in a circuit with 30 -60 seconds rest between exercises, and perform 2 - 3 rounds of the circuit. Or, perform each superset 2 - 3 times before moving onto the next superset. All the best and any feedback is welcome. Cheers!
thank you for making this, so beautiful and I loved the reference to kipchoge he is so wonderful! I am proud of you and wish you all the best!!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment mate! Kipchoge is a massive inspiration to me. All the best to you too 😁 cheers

This video should have so much more views…
Thank you mate I appreciate that a lot! Sometimes I will get very excited about making a video but it barely gets any views, unfortunately it's the way it goes sometimes but that's OK, I'm glad you found it 😊
Property, Im not a runner, I just do hill interval sprinting once a week, because I don't want to lose too much weight and muscle. But, I was searching for a video like this to follow along before my sprinting workout. So thank you man!
That's awesome man, happy to help!! I have heaps more training routines on the way as well which I will be uploading in the near future. That's so cool to hear, I started running the exact same way just doing hill sprints once a week and all the rest of my training was weights based. But now I've caught the runners bug big time 🤣 still do hill sprints though! All the best mate. Cheers
It comforts me to know that you were training like this too, it means that I'm on the right path. 🤣What a laugh, and I feel you, after all it's beautiful to run, if you do it with good technique and awareness you can enjoy the benefits. In fact, I already feel like sprinting more than once a week, so there's a risk that bug will be able to attack me soon. Man, you are very generous, I always appreciate your content, so I can't wait for you to publish it! All the best to you!
Hahaha yeah man it sure is! But there's no need to rush into it, and the fact you're building strength and speed first is great, you will have a good power base to start with if you ever fully end up catching up the bug 🤣 Thanks man that means a lot! 😁 Cheers
The stunning fluidity and grace of many world-class runners as they cover the ground at unfathomable speeds (at least for a human) is also the height of esthetics.
It certainly is a sight to behold! Absolutely mesmerizing!
Can I walk in them::will be walking around 8-10Kms daily
Hey mate yes you can, it will just depend how often and what terrain you're walking on? There's an adaptation process that will be different for everybody. You can start by testing wearing them over a shorter distance and build that up over time as you adjust
Wicked video bro. What about the hybrid though 😅
Haha shot bro 🤣 maybe they'll get a mention in another one lol
video is so good it makes me wake up at 5 am and start running
Hahaha that's awesome, cheers mate 😁
I get the idea for the comparison, but I'd say sprinters are quite comparable on the same level as bodybuilders - strong physique. Sprinters are lean, strong and ripped, all in all really nice to look at.
I was more so highlighting endurance running in this video but yes I agree, sprinters have amazing physiques! Very impressive
@@jasparvowden That's what I got from the video itself, but what I'd suggest is to direct this in the naming so that it drives the idea you want to deliver too. I was a bit confused at first. 😄
It's funny you say that because originally I was going to call this the Aesthetics of an endurance runner 🤣 then changed my mind before I recorded the audio. Thanks for the feedback mate I appreciate it and thanks for watching too 😁
That helped😢thankyou so much!!I want to become the best footballer
Thanks for commenting mate! I believe in you! Stay committed to your dream 😊
Feels good that I’ve introduced small amounts of strength training into my routine now…I no longer have back pain from working on a computer all day. I only do a little bit of strength training each day, sometimes every few days but it’s paid off immensely. Chur bro!
So good bro! Time investment doesn't need to be much aye but benefits are massive! Epic stuff
Look at hanging, brachiation and arm swings. After hanging a lot, I started to feel parts of my upper back while running. And that without explicitly trying so. And that really help with posture and the relationship of the upper with the lower body. Allowd for better coordination. If you look at trail running, and the use of swinging your arms around like a maniac, you see there the use in maintaining balance and controlling momentum. One thing that all that really does for me is make me feel in a way safer, and that's nice in itself. But that also allows for more speed in very technical and steep situations. But the main atribute getting you faster is still just plain volume.
Hey mate yes I agree. I practice brachiation and climbing regularly which I've spoken about in many videos, it all ties into our human movement abilities which have carry over effects among one another. And yes you're right, to get better at running, the main thing we need to do is run 😁 and keeping a strong overall foundation will allow us to do so for longer. Cheers mate! All the best with your training 🏃⛰️🗻
Great insights 🤩
Thanks for the detailed review! I am really considering buying one pair of V-trails 2.0 and I was looking for more info about these. Definitely found it here!
That's awesome to hear! I still wear mine to work every day 😁 the durability on them is unmatched
Hello ,do you have same size like your Lone peaks ?
Hey mate, I actually went up half a size for this shoe which fits really well. I think it's safe to go up half a size for a slim or standard fit Altra compared to the Original fit because the original fit is quite a bit wider
Just found this video Jasper thanks mate I have just purchased the Lone Peak 8 and the Vibram Trail 2.0, but been using Merrell vapors and Altra Superiors for the last few years, I have run minimilst/natural/barefoot since 2010. I have had all sorts, vivo barefoot, vibram, luna sandal and run completely barefoot for a while. Got to say it is the only way to really experience running in my opinion. Especially when you hit that sweet spot and you connect from head to toe and you feel as if you are running on air.. that for me is the main reason I run to feel that connection and run with it.
That's so awesome to hear mate!! You're 100% correct, there's nothing that compares to that pure bare foot feeling flying through some trails with beautiful scenery, you can't beat it! I'll be honest though I've certainly 'lost my ways' a little bit in recent years and gotten too comfortable with running in Altras and haven't spent much time barefoot lately so I'm going to get back to that, thanks for the reminder 😁
@@jasparvowden I have my Merrells well worn in for street running, and if I just want a very unsupported trail run, they are as close to the floor and free as I can get without going barefoot. Yet, actual barefoot running, when you can, is a freedom that you just can't get with any shoe on the market.
So true mate!! Nothing compares to barefoot but I do love the Vibram V-Trails, they're not far off the same feeling
@@jasparvowden look forward to getting back in to the five fingers
Facts my man
Great review! I found the problem with fixing my heel in Olympus 5, so tired of finding the right fit and tightening down my foot.. And what the Timp 5s’ fit and heel slip, is it okay? Thank you.
Thanks mate! I actually just got back from a run in my Timp 5s now 😁 I would say the heel slip is probably most noticeable on uphill climbs but it doesn't actually have a negative impact on my performance and I forget about it quite quickly and don't notice it anymore. I raced a half marathon in them recently which had about 550m of vert and some good steep downhills in it which I went as fast as I could down them and they held up exceptionally well. The heel slip is certainly not as bad as the Olympus 5
@@jasparvowdenmany thanks for your detailed answer, I will check their fit in the store in this case 😎 Have a nice run!
@@MrMaapers no worries mate! Yeah it's always good if you can try the shoe on first in person. Cheers 😁
@@jasparvowden😎🤝
A friend of mine he bought a pair of said he loved them. The only problem was he said they didn’t drain too well we have a lot of string process when he got his tried and felt great but you said after one run through like three or stream crossings he’s the shoes felt like it stayed wet the whole time and then he put it up the little thing air dry and he said that he took forever, so some shoes are like that they don’t need it
I haven't tested them through streams yet, they work fine in the rain but yes there's a big difference running through a stream! That's good to know, thanks for the tip!
I wanted to know how do you run, do you have a different foot step depending of the shoes? Like Toe strike for Vibram and Mid foot strike for Altra? Same question for steepness, do you Toe strike downhill and Mid foot strike on flat terrain?
Great question! I started running in Vibrams which forced me to run with a forefoot strike which has carried over when I run in Altras. Sometimes I will land midfoot if I'm fatigued but generally I'm a forefoot striker. The downhill technique varies based on terrain. I generally still land forefoot on the downhill unless it gets really steep then I heel strike with a fast cadence and rely on quad strength. I've been meaning to make a deep dive video on uphill and downhill running techniques and exercises I just haven't got the time at the moment but it will be coming in the future!
@@jasparvowden That's awesome! I'm looking for it! I recently started trail running and wearing minimalist shoes, I would like to progress without being injured and learn to run better, because I'm unbalanced (right leg/foot stronger than left one) and got hurt by wearing too narrow shoes all my life
I know how you feel mate! I went through the whole rebuilding process from bad feet to where I am now and I can say it's worth the work! So keep at it mate, trail running is one of the greatest freedoms in the world imo 😊 Try to be patient with slowly building up your tolerance to running and also a mixture of footwear can be very beneficial. A bit of strength training in the gym also plays a massive role for longevity!
I got the LP7 for about 2 months now. I got them cos they felt really great at the store. Everything about it was good. Then I happened to step on hard and wet surface one day. Gosh, it was harrowing! I have never worn a pair of shoes with such poor grip on hard and wet surface. I tried to come to terms with it but I just got uncomfortable everytime I am about to step on wet rock or something hard. I have in a tropical country and could expect rain every other day. I poured through comments after a review is made but none mentioned of this problem. Kinda strange. Anyone care to comment?
That's a shame to hear, it's not a nice feeling when you can't trust the grip of your shoe, takes a lot of the fun away from the run! I found the grip on the LP7 to be fairly reliable on wet terrain however I have to say now that I've run in the Timp 5s with the vibram megagrip outsole they are far superior in grip on wet terrain compared to the LP7
Olympus je top mezi Altrami .
I'm currently loving the Timp 5s. Would like to try the Olympus 6 and test the improved outsole durability
Well said. We also need to be aware that there are many different influences that are being exerted upon us, good and evil. Reflecting on our actions and behaviors is key to make sure we are following the right spirit.
So true! Reflection is a very important practice
I resoled my Superior 3.5s with Vibram Zegama soles... they're solid
Nice!! Can't beat the vibram outsole. What's the fit like of the 3.5s? I have the superior 5s but I don't like the fit, the toe box is too small
Exactly what you say. I wear my vibrams daily. Not running fast at all. Then when i start introducing a bit of midsole cushion im a machine. Still slow. But my legs are stronger and my technique is bang on
That's awesome mate! I love feeling the contrast between different shoes and feeling like a machine 😁 good stuff!
Do you have your Lone Peak 7 and Vanish Tempo in the same size?
Hey mate just replied on the tempo video. Currently have the same size but am planning on going up half a size on all new shoes from now on. Went up from 9.5 to 10 US on recent purchase of the Timp 5s and prefer that fit. I think with the original fit shoes however most people would be safe being half a size less than slim or standard fit shoes
Excellent review! Will definitely consider your insights on my ultra trails.
Thanks mate! I'm glad the review helped. All the best with your ultra runs as well!
Are you a life coach?
I don't give myself that title but yes I do coaching 😊
@@jasparvowden Helping others is a matter of spirit.💞
But isn't that risky though if something sharp goes in your foot? It may lead to injury or infection.
Yeah it's happened to me many times, but where's the benefits without the risk?
@@jasparvowden But what are the good health benefits of going barefoot?
The feet become stronger and more resilient, I've found performance benefits from this. It is also a very calming practice having the feet connected to the earth
@@jasparvowden Oh yes I forgot! I heard this many years ago that gravity is a brilliant force that allows us to live day-to-day without the care of drifting from our attachment to the earth. When our feet connect to the earth they become powerful conduits for energy-such as wisdom and guidance. Animals know this well. I believe feet are designed as a microcosm (mini-map) of the body because of their relationship with gravity.
@@jasparvowden However, it is not suitable for individuals with diabetes.
Do you have any tips on which exercises are suitable if you have severe back pain?
There are too many variables to put back pain exercises into a one size fits all solution because the cause of people's back pain is varied. However, try to find strength exercises that improve the strength and stability of your back that don't aggravate the area. Or try to find a good physio who can diagnose the problem and give you specific exercises. Also, sometimes pain can be emotional, or from diet or other lifestyle habits. But don't give up on yourself, keep trying to find a solution and keep your body moving!
@@jasparvowden Yes, traumatic experience can cause pain and illness. Sometimes you are in so much pain that you can't even go to the doctor. That's why I was wondering if there are light exercises that can relieve the pain? Have you had back pain yourself?
That sounds fair. With the Olympus 5 anyway as I don’t have a Lone Peak. One thing I don’t like about O5 is the fact the sole is not a continuous sheet of vibram but rather a series of glued on cleat like nubs and sometimes a small amount of water can get into the spaces causing an incessant squeak.
Yes you're right, it's a real shame. I didn't realise they had glued the outsole on in pieces until a piece of mine broke loose. I've heard that they fixed that problem with the Olympus 6 but haven't tried that shoe yet
Thanks for the review and sharing. I have the same colourway Timp 5 😊
Cheers mate! Nice one 😁 they made some good choices for the colourway on the Timp 5s! I like them all. Was originally going to go for the lime green ones but the blue and orange is sick, love them
Great video. Did you find initially that it felt like the shoe came up too high on the ankle so it rubbed on your ankle knob/bone? That's what it feels like right now and I want to run in them but hoping this rubbing on my ankle bone feeling goes away with a little break in. TIA.
Thanks mate! It doesn't feel too high for me it just feels like it's not completely contoured to the ankle so there's a bit of slipping. For example I've run in asics which are moulded a little tighter in the ankle and don't slip around as much so I hope Altra take some notes from other brands like that but apart from that it didn't actually cause any rubbing or discomfort on my ankle. Maybe you have a more pronounced ankle bone than I do? Hopefully once the shoe breaks in it won't rub as much for you
@@jasparvowden Thanks very much for your take, brother.

Excellent review!🦋👣
Thanks so much! Glad it helped 😁
Greatest long-run shoe ever made.
Love it
Excellent review. I have used the LP 5 and now the Olympus 5, both for long-distance walking with a 10 - 13kg backpack. I prefer the Olympus 5 for their increased cushioning on longer hikes. I very much agree with you, they are more forgiving on the downhills and suit a greater variety of terrain which you are bound to encounter over the course of several 100 km. What the Olympus 5 are terrible for is wet grass / bog / moorland. They have absolutely no grip on that terrain. I may as well be walking on an ice rink. I normally walk with poles which mitigate this issue but it is something to keep in mind depending on the terrain you plan to use them on.
I encountered that exact situation yesterday after some heavy rain this week and very wet conditions on the trails and the Olympus were not performing well. I have ordered a pair of the Timp 5s which are on their way and have very high hopes for! I think they will replace the Olympus in my shoe rotation
Gracias y saludos.
Hi mate, yes I have had the same problems. They have attached the vibram mega grip as individual strips and a couple of those strips started to tear away from the shoe which was really annoying. It's a shame because apart from that it's a great shoe and it's been very durable otherwise
Thanks for the review. Altra shoe reviews are rare, so this helped me say bye-bye to Nike. This brings you 1 sub closer to 1000 subs.
Thanks mate, I appreciate it! Hopefully I can afford some new shoes some time soon to make more reviews 😅
I bought the via olympus, and I didn't like them. Do you think I am safe to assume i wouldn't like the olympus trail shoe ? Or is it a different thing?
I would assume they have a similar feel, but I haven't run in the via olympus so I couldn't say. The via olympus has the ego max midsole and the Olympus 5 has compression moulded eva so there will be some difference in feel
@@jasparvowden would you use them for a 50k trail ? Or would you stick with the lone peak ?
@@DiegoSagastume97 Personally, the longer I've run in both shoes I prefer the lone peak but that's just my individual preference because I like to have good ground feel. If you need extra support then the Olympus has that, but the lone peak is certainly a more nimble shoe and still has enough cushioning to take you over long distances if you need it
