    For what I see of the Pyzel line of boards I would stear clear of the Shadow, Red Tiger, Power Tiger, Mini Ghost. Radius is amazing in indo reef waves, High Line looks good as well Ghost is also a winner. Phantom and Alien go great in softer waves. White tiger might be ok but prefer to surf small waves on mid length. I would have bought a High Line before a Red Tiger. My local shapers produce junk so no option there.

      I've been very happy with my Shadow. And my Ghost. Not so with Phantom and Pyzalien, although Pyzalien 2 gets positive feedback. I bought the Red Tiger. It's a technical board. Ridden it in a wide variety of conditions now, and had some good surfs on it. Wouldn't recommend it for your average punter, though. Head the High Line might be worth a look. Cheers.

    Hello, I've been following your search for the perfect board. I'm in a bit of the same situation. I'm 47 years old and weigh 86kg. I bought the Big Baron 6.8 38L but it was a mistake, and it's a very specific board, it turns very well but has no rocker and can only be used in twin configuration. I live in Portugal and surf mostly hollow waves were i live and I ended up buying the Al Merrick Big Happy 6.4 and I'm happy, it's good for paddling and turns very well, it's a high performance board but with volume on the front. Of the boards you presented, I would go for the mid strength or M13. I believe that the Harley Ingleby Mini Moe is a good board but only in windless seas. The fish boards like seaside are another style of surf and i am a PU guy i have selled all my epoxy boards

    As a surfboard shaper one thing to pick up here is volume. The majority of these boards come in at 40 Litres. Personally I’m more interested in dimensions not volume. But if you wanted to change volume in any design, minor changes in the boards thickness or foil, nose to tail will have the biggest impact on volume. For example in these designs, 1 or 2 mm changes in thickness would push volume up by about 1.5 to 2 litres. So you don’t necessarily need to increase length. Cheers

    • @tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms
      @tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms 5 днів тому

      Good to have a shaper chime in. I did notice that they were all around the 40l mark. Wasn't looking at the volume when I picked these boards, but the length. For a bigger guy wanting more volume at this length, or somebody wanting just more volume, that's a good tip.

    Hi, love the video !!!!! Appart from my shorties, I ride a Lost Smooth Operator 6´10 about 43L, and its a dely! I found important the fin configuration depending on the waves. When its slopy up to head high, I use the FCS Machado Keel, they hold and project with speed allowing for good turns and cut backs. When its solid, up to double over head, I use a quad set up with FCS accelerator at the front and performance back fins. You have to consider this type of boards for long runners to experience the joy the board offers.

    I am a little off-topic, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Jim Banks Revolution, with his Future Form bottom? Our local shaper has made a test board with similar bottom contours for us all to try. Lots have tested it, including myself, and it's messed with all our brains. Im not yet sold and still in the research stage, but it took off like no other board I have ridden. He could well be onto something. We are surfing punching, hollow beach breaks.

      Looks like a really interesting board. Can't get them here so I can't handle, and I've never seen one. Not a mid-length as such. That extended vee seems to find favour with some shapers, Chris Christenson being one. Not much of a twin finner, myself. Remember being out at Uluwatu in the early eighties with Jim Banks. He was destroying it and riding twin fins then, too, from memory.

I surf kinda average beachrbeak. not a very steep wave and I think there's better options than the red tiger. fr example his pyzalien...I feel the sweet spot is small on the red tiger and if my feet are not in the exact correct spot , board feel weird. I think it went better when I widened my stance, but that doesn't feel natural to me.

If you've got your foot right at the back in as you say a wide stance, it becomes very loose and twitchy, which is where it works best in my view. Very different though to just standing up and plonking your feet down like you can do with a lot of boards.

    Your video provides a comprehensive overview of available options online. While there may be other brands with similar daily drivers, they may not be able to match the offerings of larger, well-established brands online. Additionally, there's the possibility of opting for the higher-priced JS Carbotune XG, which would be comparable to the CI Eco Carbon Tech Happy ED in terms of construction. These models would require special orders in NZ, but would offer greater durability as daily drivers in their respective constructions. Great video! - I've tried a lot of daily drivers, all over the world.. Pyzalien 2 is my go to. Similar to your Happy. P2 is great for 2ft soft waves, up to 6ft reasonably powerful waves. However, in big, powerful, barreling conditions, where a stepup is needed, the P2 is too fast. But thats what makes it so fun in normal conditions. It maintains speed, catches waves easy, and gets up and goes... But most of us don't surf massive, powerful conditions that often. That's where a 2 board quiver is nice. The P2 for 90% of conditions, and something with a rounder tail for when it's absolutely firing.. I had a minighost and I kept getting caught in the top of the waves, and it was a little over volumed..Can't recommend that one.

    I wanted to add to this comment Jeff made about being a little kid in the South Bay. My father used to to shape for Lymann surfboards. His name is Robert Trenschel. He recently told me he made 4 boards for Jeff right before he and his family went off and moved to Hawaii. Jeff can you confirm this?

      Hi, I asked Jef your question. Here was his reply: To my recollection, I only took one board to hawaii, but I did have two boards from Lyman surfboards in total! I thought the owner Jim Lyman had made them both, but it is definitely possible someone else shaped them! I can say positively, I never had four boards!

      I'd agree that they need support but unlike the old days, most of today's surfers wouldn't even know who the local shapers are. When I was growing up and surfing,we always used to surf with the shapers, so they knew us and could shape based off their knowledge of our surfing and the local breaks. Also, see my reply to the other comment on this. Certainly around here, the local shapers dropped the ball a bit on marketing and are only now scrambling to catch up via social media against the onslaught of mass manufacturing. I had a chat about the dire situation for local shapers with one two days ago. Even those surfing shapers have to decide which way to go. Look at Dylan Longbottom for example.

      @tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms thank you for your response and all valid points. I'm based near Durban, South Africa, my sister lives in Raglan. We are new to the area and recently went to our local shaper for some repairs. They live in the thick bush, have no phone signal, family run business for 60 years. They specialize in EPS, something I've never been into. After seeing the quality of work they do in an old barn, I walked out of there, knowing I need to order a 2 board quiver. All the locals riding them like one big happy family. Very cool. They have never marketed themselves, and I believe just keeping their head above water with custom orders. Their only problem is their boards are so well built, they last longer than your mass-produced EPS boards. Kee up your videos, lots of us really enjoy them.

    The Shadow is a great board, I agree. For smaller wave you could consider the new JS Xero Fusion in Easyrider dimension (the 6’0 is 36.2L) in order to shorten the lenght. It’s mental! Wooly has just reviewed it

      Thanks for the suggestion. I've got an RNF96 at 6'00" and 37l, which is a fun surfboard for summer waves. I possibly went a little heavy on the volume there. I did look at other JS boards with the Easyrider dimensions. Will take a look. Cheers.

    Bingo! My Fiji experience exactly! Ghost XL was exceptional, shadow Xl's rails felt very boxy for the waves however, and yet the board goes well here at home in the more chunky powerful cold water waves here on the west coast.The ghost template is superb for clean well shaped waves. Probably the best most responsive natural rocker on a board i have ever experienced in my 50 plus years of surfing. I only took the two boards, but next time will take two versions of the ghost i rekon to match up the wave ranges. The shadows rails thickness is something to be aware of if ordering the board for the first time. Fuller and thicker than the ghosts ( which has a superb sharper foil) , so go down a bit on your custom thickness to get a more responsive feel.

      @anthonythomas4541 Місяць тому

      I'm currently toying between the Red Tiger and Phantom for upcoming summer waves. Phantom winning at the moment for the order... the Red Tiger seems to be a complicated board to ride. Back foot, etc.. whereas I am front footed and surf with my back foot forward of the tailpad, then only shift it back for carving turns or jamming in the pocket. I would love your thoughts on the difference between the two. I have watched all your vids and know that you didn't really favor the Phantom because of its wider nose profile. I was thinking of ordering thinner thickness dims because of this, and also because its rails might be thick like the Shadow, whereas I want a Ghost type of rail .. it's been the last piece of the puzzle before ordering. I was about to speak to the surfshop about the rail differences, but I would love your feedback if you may. Thanks for all your vids, they have been super helpful in ordering my Pyzels. I was riding a whole range of DHDs before but found them unsuited to west coast waves whereas the Pyzels excell. I have a Paddliac, Ghost, and Shadow and couldn't be happier. Best boards I've ever owned by far as a quiver. I hope the Phantom completes the quiver, and I'll be covered from A to Z for the first time in my life!

      @@anthonythomas4541 The Phantom is a very popular board, with a lot of people using it as a Daily Driver. It didn't suit me as a Daily Driver for the reasons I outlined. But that's just me. I have grown into the Red Tiger and will keep mine but for summer surf I ride a Lost RNF96 at 6'00" and 37l. Being epoxy it carries that sense of a little more volume, which I find a little bit too much at times, but I also figure I'll age into it. And I do have fun on it. The board I really loved for summer was the Chilli BV2, but with the stock dimensions I had to go with a 6'2", which I felt was too long for summer waves. I didn't try playing with the dimensions to get more volume at 6'00", but I still entertain the idea. It also had the problem of being a weak board as I creased it at Raglan in relatively small surf--another downside for me.

    G’day Tui, Really appreciate your frankness about ailments associated with surfing as we get older. I’m now 67 and find that i am getting more ailments as age progresses. Regarding your neck problems, I’ve had the same whiplash type injury from wipeouts. Ive seen a wonderful Physiotherapist who has given me a great set of exercises to do to strengthen and loosen the upper back and neck. Would suggest you do the same. Also, a short course of an anti-inflammatory, 24-48 hours can help dramatically reduce that initial inflammatory reaction.

    ...try twin + 1. Might be the sauce ya need to wake up your RT. Also, i personally stay away from XL/easy rider dims, as it isnt really the same board and will never perform as the OG. I had a terrible experience on a JS easy rider xero. And part of why i got the RT was knowing heaps of locals that hated the RT, though they all surf off the front. So if they hated it, it will be the go for me. End of it all, we are all unique and if you find what works for you and helps happiness then go for glory.

      @tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms the stock boards are pretty good in my opinion. You got the XL dimensions I thought. Why I commented that I stay away from XL/easy rider dims, even as a Fat man scoop dad of 2. The mechanics of the board are designed specifically. As soon as ya widen and thicken, it's not the same board.
