WEIRD TECH FROM THE 80s : The Aroma Disc Player

  • There were many crazy inventions that came out of the 80s. Lots of weird and wonderful fads that now, in hindsight, seemed like a very drug influenced mental hiccup. Some of these fads are well remembered, but there are others that have faded away with the sands of time.
One such device was the Aroma Disc Player. I never owned one, but I remember seeing ads for it back around 1984. Being someone who loved discs, whether they be records or CDs, I thought this was a very cool and interesting idea. I think part of me always wanted one, but it just never happened. As I mention in the video, these things were surprisingly popular, but I don't think they stuck around on the market for very long.
This was actually a very popular item during the Christmas season of 1983. Keep in mind this was also at the heights of the Cabbage Patch Kids craze. What a crazy Christmas that was! Many stores at the time reported that their entire stock of Aroma Disc Players sold out in days!
But how did this thing work? How did it play scents? I talk about this in the video. There was actually quite a selection of scented discs that you could buy at that time. In the video I talk about exactly what scents were available, and how much they cost at that time.
I thought this thing would be super hard to find on the second hand market. But I was surprised to see quite a few of them listed on eBay. You can buy a used, unpackaged one for well under $20.00. And I have even seen unopened ones still in their original packaging for a very affordable price. However, I would wager that many of the 40 year old scented discs have long since lost their smell.
Who knows, maybe sometime down the road I will indulge myself and get one of these crazy artifacts from the 80s. And maybe I will do a video showing it in action.
Did you ever own the Aroma Disc Player? What did you think of it? Did you have a favorite scent? Do you still own one? Does it still work? Feel free to leave a comment!

my family had one of these. the discs got pretty crispy after a while, but i think they were available at the local Woolco store. the purpose is to cover the smell of cigarettes, which was everywhere in the 80s.

My parents had one that they never used (probably a gift). We fired it up in the 90s. It smelled like fake roses and burnt vinyl.

There was also a plan to implement this technology into video games around the same time so that you would experience the smells of your gaming environment but it never really took off, mind you coupled with VR that we have now this would be pretty awesome.

3:30 - you have no proof these have lost their scent. Video would have been better if you shelled out the $30 for a new unit and proved it.

Nothing burger of a video. Didn't even review the tech as you don't have it.
