A secretive, breeding female Water Vole eating Celandine flowers!
It takes the good luck of being in the right place at the right time, and patience, to film Water Voles, due to their often being alert, and ready to run or dive into the water, following any sounds or movement that could be an indication of an approaching predator! Especially a Water Vole who is just about to breed: as my next clip reveals her collecting dry stems to make a nest in her burrow. I am partially hidden by a shrub (you can see the green hue of them as they wave about, at times) an am wearing subtle green coloured clothes to blend into the environment. Whilst hidden, she is eating tender bramble leaves, but then breaks cover to feed on the protein rich Celandine flowers. It was at this point, I knew that she was a breeding female! The next clip reveals the she is heavily pregnant by her expanded waistline, as she dives carefully into the water. So she had not given birth yet!

Close Encounter with a Brown Hare!
Переглядів 12 тис.6 місяців тому
Brown hares tend to live in very exposed habitats, so have to rely on their acute senses and running at speeds of up to 45mph to evade predators. They do not use burrows, but make a small depression in the ground called a ‘form’ amongst long grass where they are very well camouflaged. When you stand still, you put wild kin at ease (if you have no harmful intentions). Sometimes their behaviour c...
A Jay!
Переглядів 667 місяців тому
Jays are the most colourful members of the crow family, but usually spot me first, so are quite difficult to see. They are known for being shy woodland birds, so it was a privilege to see this wood sprite with those vibrant blue wing stripes. They usually feed on acorns, nuts, seeds and insects, but also eats nestlings of other birds and small mammals. In fact, "Half the trees in two new Englis...
A Very Close Encounter with a Crow whilst doing the Bittern Walk!

Take lessons from a Bittern, who will teach you how to have close encounters with nervous species such as Crows and Water Voles! Watch how this Bittern is fully focussed, walking slowly and quietly in this footage on Twitter by Whistling Joe Everett @whistling_joe : x.com/whistling_joe/status/1748774996673999154?s=20
A Bohemian Waxwing in Oxford!
Переглядів 1467 місяців тому
The Bohemian Waxwing’s favourite berry the Rowan. There were just two of them on this windy January day, but seven on the previous day. This Waxwing managed to swiftly consume 8 berries before flying into the middle of a tree on the opposite side of their road! He and a mate did alternating sorties, having fed very well before I arrived that morning. They also consume other berries, such as Cot...
A Close Encounter with a Crow whilst doing the Bittern Walk!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.7 місяців тому
I decided to try what I now call the "Bittern Walk" (which I first noted Stephen de Vere @WildlifeInCloseUp doing, whilst working as a field assistant, as he very slowly and quietly walked towards Roe Deer to film them and have successfully filmed Water Voles at close range this way). I decided to try this approach and walked very slowly and quietly towards two Crows on a local green. I then st...
A Chiffchaff searching for Insects and Spiders by the Brook
Переглядів 608 місяців тому
An unusual encounter by the brook! The freezing conditions had driven Chiffchaffs to search for insects and spiders sheltering in the bankside vegetation. Very small, charming birds who are usually easily spooked, so standing very still and being pin drop quiet was necessary. Such a privilege to have a close encounter with this shy bird. In the spring, they will begin to sing their name: Chiff ...
Farming for Nature: Berry-laden Hedgerow for Overwintering Birds

Turn the sound up to hear the Wren, Goldfinches and dawn chorus on this frosty November morning, as I zoom in to film the Fieldfare sipping from puddles in the lane, along with Chaffinches and a raucous group of Rooks, who flew down from a leafless tree which their party were adorning. I have never had the privilege of easily spooked Fieldfare remaining in front of me, as I filmed them at fairl...
A "Fenton" moment in ancient woodland!
Переглядів 6610 місяців тому
You probably remember the man calling his dog back: "Fenton! Fenton! FENTON!" as it chased a herd of Red Deer in Richmond Park. A funny watch, but a dangerous moment for the deer, as the dog could have harmed one and they were driven across a road where they could have been hit by a car and the impact could have caused injuries to the passengers. My senses alert, as always, I thought the noise ...
A Great Spotted Woodpecker in Ancient Woodland
Переглядів 4210 місяців тому
Great to see a Great Spotted Woodpecker Woodpeckers tapping on the bark to feast on insects and larvae in tree trunks and lit up in full autumnal sunlight. When insects become scarce during winter, they seek berries and nuts, and are much more likely to be seen in your gardens feeding on the peanuts in your feeders. They do not harm their brain as they tap, or drum enthusiastically in the Sprin...
A Robin performs a Water Ballet!

The unexpected surprise of a Robin performing a water ballet in the garden and my heart sang! We need to cherish wild kin: rewild our gardens, villages, towns, schools, colleges, farms, businesses and lives for our health and well-being and the joy that they bring to our lives! It's thanks to insects that we have any food. I offer each and every species in the interconnected Web of Life my deep...
A Water Vole in Fragmented Habitat
Переглядів 85Рік тому
At a new location, yesterday, I had noted typical Water Vole feeding signs of nipped vegetation (which you can see towards the Vole's back). Fool's Watercress is a favourite food! I returned an hour earlier this morning. After a half hour wait this Water Vole appeared much to my joy! Unfortunately, someone moved alongside the bank and caused the Water Vole to flee! The vegetation is fragmented,...
A Young Brown Rat!
Переглядів 176Рік тому
My heart skipped a beat this morning, I thought I had glimpsed a Water Vole on the opposite side of the stream. But having quietly taken my camera from my bag and zoomed in, there was a young Brown Rat before me! Brown Rats can be mistaken for Water Voles and vice versa, so we made this short Quick Guide to help you to tell the difference, if you aren't certain: ua-cam.com/video/Y-fBBFsclNM/v-d...
The Spindle Ermine Moth and the Crab Spider
Переглядів 37Рік тому
Drama on Yarrow! The Spindle Ermine Moth is very small and although the Crab Spider is smaller, they are usually very feisty. At first, the Crab Spider slipped into one of the Yarrow florets, but then seemed to be trying to catch the Moth. The Moth eventually flew away! They are very similar in appearance to closely related Ermines, so needs to be taken with identification (some moths are trick...
Spotting a hidden Water Vole in a grassy bank!
Переглядів 86Рік тому
At the moment of arriving at the stream, I noticed the overhanging grass twitching and then rising into a burrow entrance which meant a Water Vole was feeding! Two Clover leaves were also consumed. This is great habitat which offers food and vital cover for the Water Voles from their many predators. It is so meditative to quietly observe their behaviour and other wildlife that live in or by the...

Very nice capture Jo. There were so many voles on the banks of rivers when I used to go canoeing as a boy, but unfortunately I haven't seen one as an adult for many years.

Thank you so much. My sincere apologies for the late answer, as I have only just found your message. Yes, the water vole was filmed in a bramble overhanging a stream.
