I’m a student pilot also in the uk, and whenever I’m not flying to build hours towards getting my license I’m watching this channel. Thank you for the amazing videos Terry :)
I once spent most of a day inside that Lancaster when it was gate guardian at Swinderby. A group from the Lincoln Shortwave Club, G5FZ, operated a special event amateur radio station from Just Jane for an RAF anniversary. I was log keeping from the tail gunner's position. Quite cold and draughty on a rainy day, even when on the ground. I imagined being there whilst at 10,000 feet, in the dark and being shot at.
Was at Cranfield University many years ago, for a degree course. Then, they had the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - spitfires & Hurricanes, and we weree regularly treated to the running-up of Merlins outside the hangar. Bliss! One day, there was an awful lot of zooming, so nipped outside un time to see a Spitfire. in plan view (so, wings vertical) passing between the poplar trees that fringed the road just outside the hangar! Going really fast, too. Treasured experience, that.
Hi Terry. I wish you knew how valuable your videos are for aspiring and experienced pilots. You’re unique and such a great character. Keep up the good work and a huge thank you for the time and effort spent to prepare those videos to us. THANK YOU!
A nice day out!.....I saw Just Jane when she arrived at Biggin Hill, 1965 as G-ASXX, in the all white livery of the French Navy following an epic flight from Australia....happy days! It would be lovely if their aim to get her airborne again is achieved🥰
Another great video. I visited East Kirkby by car last year. It was the day after the Queen passed away so it was quite a somber day. I must try and visit by air. 👍
I totally agree with the advantages of flying above a broken cloud layer you mention. And I will add that it is also easier to spot other aircraft in the air, without the visual ‘noise’ of surface detail in your view.
Mate, you're such an immensely likeable character. I don't even have my PPL yet and still enjoy being along for a relaxed, leisurely ride above the clouds.
Another great video Terry. As an Australian pilot you’ve really changed my negative perceptions about flying in the UK. Yes, you have bizarre R/T and airspace procedures, but the charm of these historical farm strips is something that for the most part doesn’t exist here. You’ll be lucky to find an unlocked toilet at an Australian grass strip, let alone a cafe or hangared Lancaster! I would love to do some private touring in the UK and EU one day.
I suppose the good thing about the UK is it's small. You can visit 25-30 airfields within an hours flight time. Saying that Australia, now there's a place to fly but you need a decent machine.
@@JBMPPS if you’ve flown in the USA, New Zealand, Canada, or Australia, you can’t help but be amazed at the ridiculously over complicated rules for VFR flight. It’s clear that the regulator really doesn’t care about GA and quite possibly wants to make it as difficult as possible for people to fly recreationally. Some examples of this include the whole back and forth basic service malarkey as well as an abundance of pseudo controllers in pseudo control towers at uncontrolled airfields. In Aus if an airfield is uncontrolled there’s only a CTAF 99% of the time. Flight following can be requested if VFR in E/G but otherwise you are free to punt along as you wish.
@@auspilot6119Are you suggesting that CTAF is preferable to having an A/G radio operator at an uncontrolled airfield? I’d be curious as to why you think that, I think on the whole at busy airfields a good A/G operator does a lot to maintain safety in the circuit. You won’t really get stuff like pilots joining for opposite finals on the same runway that you hear of happening at uncontrolled fields in the US. If you’re flying in class G in the UK you’re also free to punt along without speaking to anyone. It may not be advisable in busy airspace but the option is there.
I see what you mean but also may think you might have misunderstood GA in the UK. One does not have to contact anyone in E/G except in RMZ's of course, and remember the UK is over 10 times more densely populated with extremely crowded skies and 4 International Airports only around London.@@auspilot6119
Artistic licence :-) Thumbnails are so small I wanted people to see, I put a more appropriate image up now. Thanks for not telling me off for clickbait.
Terry - the time is approaching when I'm going to fly to meet you for that pint! Need to visit Tim at Nayland, then refuel at Earl's Colne then come and find you!
How lucky was that to catch the Spitfire taking off!! Another excellent video Terry 😁 East Kirby looks great for a visit! I hope to get down south next year - although lord only knows when!! 🤣
Lovely video Terry. Landed at Sywell few weeks ago to a Spitfire and Mustang. Parked up right beside them and departed as they were lining up behind me. Still annoyed till today I didn’t ask for a one minute formation with ‘em 😩😭
WOW! what a day! Not many spitfires here in Sweden. Sometimes you see the Saab 91s and if you are lucky you get to tag along. Not a warbird, more of a peacebird...😄
I'm doing my PPL at the moment i'm about 6 months in. And my airfield has an active Spitfire taking people for tours around the local area. Im super luck to have had a front row seat view of its operations while holding short on the runway also! Cheers for the video!
Thanks so much, yes not sure why I chose that one first but little SportCruiser is so manoeuvrable that it didn't matter that I changed my mind on short final.
East Kirby is on my list 👍 but not flying anywhere at the moment as I broke my arm 6 weeks ago. Out of plaster now but still painful so taking it easy which doesn’t fit well with me! Cheers
Hi Terry. Fun fact about Andrewsfield. The 27 approach takes you by the village of Gt Saling. The airfield vehicle approach is from the 09 end of the old runway and the road travels right through to Saling village along the line of the old runway. At that end - past the old T hangar (if it's still there) is another entrance to the airfield - the original one - and at the entrance is a small memorial to the wartime operations. I think you can still walk the length of the old runway, through a gate at the 27 end past the aircraft tie downs. You can see the T hangar on the map you posted at 7:16 above the 27 runway designator along a roadway which takes you to the village is the road which runs along the right hand edge of the photo.
Are some moments here questionably VFR or am I missing something? I'm a new pilot and I didn't think you could pop through gaps like that. 3.38 for example. Love the videos by the way. Hoping to fly to east Kirkby soon.
Hey Lewis, great comment, There are stated distances from cloud above 3,000ft in the VFR rules but it's very difficult to get a tape measure out whilst flying. The rules are there to keep you from killing yourself and/or others, however taking this into account the essence of it is 'keep clear of cloud' the 1,500m horizontal and 1,000ft vertical above 3,000ft is best to keep legal and safe, but you are right, maybe I was a bit close there. Flying through breaks in the cloud is fine but maybe not wise. I have made a few videos on the subject hopefully you can check them out? Thanks for the kind comment and keep asking questions of yourself and others and you will be a brilliant pilot. 👨✈
Hi Terry, thank you for the videos, i have watched them all now.. I have been teasing myself about learning to fly for too long, do you think 57 is too old to learn?
Hi Terry I have been working my way through all your videos as I find them fascinating and have always wanted to learn to fly, I’ve been looking at th different licences needed and wondered what type you would need to fly an aircraft like yours, is an NPPL (microlight) sufficient or does it have to be an LAPL licence?, many thanks in advance
Sorry for the late reply. You can fly a Sportcruiser on an NPPL however you may have issues taking it abroad as NPPL is a national licence and I believe can't be used against a full PPL, LAPL gives no advantages flying wise but can be upgraded to a full PPL in future. Hope that helps?
I’d still love to pick your brain about the Sportcruiser. I’m in the market for one and have a few questions. Sadly your email address isn’t in the about section. (If it is, it doesn’t show on my end) Do you have an Instagram account we can connect through,Terry?

Great video as always plus the bonus of a small snippet of what I am sure is an Avro Manchester taking off at 1min 20 secs in. Very nice. Thank you...
Nice one thank you, Manchester :-)
Thanks Terry, great airfield east Kirkby and on my list. Great video as always
Thanks Robin 👍

What a lovely comment, I just try and be myself, I'm not always likeable, ask my wife when I've left a sink full of washing up. :-)
@@ShortField yeah right, I guess we're lucky you don't have a sink in Goopy then ;-)

I need to do something about EGSL it has such an awesome history and I didn't know that, thanks Graham.
Very nice! I heard that they were going to add a runway or extend one or something on the airfield so that NX611 could operate out of there?
I assume they will use the main runway that's there, I've seen video of it fast taxing down it.
Always enjoyable. !
Great video- my aim next year is to try start flying GA again miss it!
You should James point it where you want to go and not the PAX :-)

The app is SkyDemon really popular for VFR flying in europe, however I am going to start using ForeFlight as well.
