I never thought I could visit here.

- If you fly in the south east of the UK you will definitely have heard of Bovingdon, it's the site of the BNN VOR but there's so much more to it than just a navaid, and YES there is a small runway there and YES you can visit, and today that's where I'm going to take you.
Come and join my on a flight from North Weald to Bovingdon an ex-RAF wartime airfield steeped in history and home to the BNN VOR.
So strap yourself in, because here we go.

My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of Andrewsfield EGSL about 25 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is known under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.

I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Please share it with anyone you think would be interested and I'd so love it if you ticked SUBSCRIBE and DING THE NOTIFICATION BELL to be informed by UA-cam when I upload my next video. Thank you so much.
If you are interested, my video content is available to purchase as stock footage, please contact me via my email address in the ABOUT section of my channel for more information.
If you like my content you could buy me a coffee but no worries if you don't want too, I'm just chuffed that you are even interested in my videos, and if you ever see me at any airfields please come over and say 'Hi' and I'll probably buy you a coffee.

Thanks Terry another great video, also nice history lesson, didn’t realise it was that active.
Someone said dancing on ice is filmed there, the hanger you fly over on finals, wasn’t sure how true it was.
Keep those videos coming 😎
Cheers Dave
Hi Terry just a thought for you, a take off technique introduced to me by one of Bartons legendary Instructors from years gone bye Charlie Rollo, instead of rotating the aircraft at a speed, just as the elevators become effective hide the end of the runway with the nose, the aircraft will become airbourne at the lowest possible speed in ground effect, then very gently (particularly on the Sports Cruiser) lower the nose to accelerate to climb speed. I believe this method gives the shortest take-off roll, particularly off soft grass strips
Nice advice Steve thanks 👍
Good old Bovingdon.... lots of glider flights from there in the early 70s. I flew the last RAF (air cadets) flight there in Kirby Cadet Mk.3 XN246 in 1972 before the gliding school relocated to manston.
Wow 👍
Correction... the last flight in XN246 was on 25.10.1970. Just looking through my old logbook. I did my first solo there (again in XN246) on 4.4.1969. I fly a Cub replica these days (G-BZHU) so hopefully I will try to get to BNN myself soon.
Great vid as always Terry 😁 and see you've entered the 'big time' of "this video is sponsored by.." 👍 Do love to see the wonderful history about these historic airfields! So nice they are still there and not a sprawling housing development!!
Thanks Mike it paid for the flight and lunch but I’ve not ordered a brand new Cirrus on the strength of it 😂 Do you think it ruined the flow of the video?
@@ShortField It's relevant to your channel and fitted in nicely 👍 It would have jarred if it was something completely unrelated to flying, but that would narrow the sponsor market down a lot 🤣
A non-pilot here who really enjoys your stories. I’ve seen a couple other videos where you start flights later in the day than originally planned. In my industry (engineering and construction) rushing to squeeze in work at the end of the day is a significant contributor to many accidents. Not a criticism or saying you’re making bad decisions. Just something to keep in mind. Enjoy your flights!
Good point made.
Brilliant point and has been heeded 🙏
Another inspirational episode!
These recent videos have taken it to another level!
Brilliant sir! 👍🏼
Amazing comment Geoff really really appreciated 🙏
A few paramotor guys fly out of here occasionally. Interesting video, love the history segments. 😁
love watching your work, well done
What a lovely comment thank you so much 👍
Another entertaining video, Terry. I love the graphics you include... always beautifully presented 👌🏻👍🏻
Thanks Kev always appreciate your support sir 🙏
Love that plane x
Another superbly presented video. I wish my aircraft was waterproof!
Thanks Paul really appreciated sir. I’ve seen Giles fly in rain?
@@ShortField exactly. Look what it’s done to him!!
Hi Terry, sorry I missed this video. Love the history of the airfield that you included. Perfect!
Good video. I try to avoid VORs as much as possible as they all tend to be as you say "Hunny Pots" and I think a lot of pilots are heads in as they get there to make sure they meet their turn point, so a wise choice to go lower than standard. I do think you push yourself into tight time frames, some times, it could lead to get thereitis (be careful).
Thanks as always Algy. Spring is coming I can’t wait for the clocks to go forward then, hopefully I won’t cut it so fine. Honoured by your view and comments sir.
@@ShortField No need to be honoured, it is just a view, looking back at how my brother was and the fact he ended up staying in places he had not planned to.
@@flyingkubyou know how nice it is to get positive comments and I do feel honoured that you take the time to watch and constructively comment.
@@ShortField You know me, I like to use my experiance to keep others safe 🙂
Great vid 👍
Oooh, sponsored now..🎉🎉
Its a shame that so many airfields have "redeveloped" but at least some have enough of a runway left to be visited.
My wife was born on the airfield when the yanks were there
Wow now I didn’t expect this comment, did I get the potted history correct.
The famous white Ball. I could only find Plaistows because of it.
Cutting it a bit fine on the return there Terry.
Bovingdon, another airfield near me that I’ve not visited. I did try to fly into Finmere yesterday but didn’t get a reply to my PPR call. So ended up going to Bicester - loads of RAF history there and now a lot of classic car businesses in the old airfield buildings. Definitely worth a visit, but as a grass glider site, maybe it’s too long for you!
Keep trying with Finmere or drop me an email and I’ll ask my mate who’s based there. Roll on BST
Very good - now I will need to watch those movies 🤣👍
Appreciate that Patrick thank you sir 🙏
Another interesting one Terry✌️👍💜
What is the crosswind performance of the Sports Cruiser may I ask🤔
It’s only 12 knots in the POH but it easily handles twice that. Thank you as always, do you think I should include the airfield history or is it boring?
Keep the history Terry its really interesting 👍
This one special place and some time Bovingdon owners said to me they are happy for to fly in here so hope one i will get around to doing it.
Yes go Michael 👍
Masters of the Air was filmed here @@ShortField
Nice hat just wondering where u got it from?
Great video, thanks for sharing! Will add it to the long list of places I need to visit 👍🏻
You should Rich!
Nice Video
Thanks so much 🙏
@@ShortField welcome 🙏🏽
Terry, great video. On a technical note, what was the oil level reading?
Thanks Steve it was just on the bottom where the thin bit goes fat again on the dipstick 👍
Hi - enjoyed yr video - please can you advise contact for PPR at BOV ? Thanku
I got PPR through a mate but if you check the AFE Guide there is a number there.
Another great video Terry, can I ask how you did the PPR? On skydemon it shows an email but no phone number, did you email?
Thank you, I only found out I could visit from a friend who knows the owner.
So the UK perform circuits/pattern at 2000 AGL? Or is it overfly height of 2000. Here in Australia circuit height is 1000 feet AGL for GA and overfly at least by 500 feet the heightest circuit.
You are correct Glenn I explained that really badly. Circuits are 1000ft overhead joins are normally up to 1000ft above circuit height.

What’s your view on Google buying 52 acres of your airfield ? Do you think you’ll get a smoother runway out of it. Section 106 money should be huge ?
It’s better than 300 houses.
Wanted to ask just to confirm the pipersport would not be able to be flown with an NPPL?
Yep no problem with an NPPL
@@ShortField Oh so I could fly with just an NPPL
@@09r_mediaAs long as you have SEP endorsement then no issue. Also require a glass cockpit sign off.
Terry. Don’t you have your PPL? Why can’t you fly at night? I know with a LSA License you can’t fly at night. Isn’t the Sport Cruiser night capable? I know it’s not IFR rated. But night?
North Weald closes just after sunset. I have a full PPL but this Sport Cruiser is also uncertified for night ops.
@@ShortFieldInteresting. I thought the SC was good for night flying. Thanks for the reply.
