Genesis - Looking For Someone (Hammond L-100 Cover)
Переглядів 4,3 тис.2 роки тому
This song is one of my favorite and one of the reasons why I bought a L100 Hammond. There is so much drawbars and presets changing which make it impossible to play without an original L-100 Hammond. When Ant left the band they never played this again, like most of Trespass songs. As a consequence, the only good audio source for the live version is the Live at BBC (1970), and the only video foot...

My favorite song ever. Supper's Ready was planned to be in the Live 1973 album but was deleted as the band requested it. I decided to use as a backing track the live version of the song that should have been on the album because it's the closest to studio version (compared with Shepperton or Melody), and the only one where Tony is using the Hohner Pianet and not the RMI EP (which I don't own). ...

    So glad to see a younger person appreciate and pull off the intricacies of Tony's playing and arrangement. I can remember so many times in our band when I was asked to learn old Genesis and I thought I was done with the song and I would just repeat the previous section and then...Nooo. Tony changed the chords again and doesn't play them the same way (inversions) and with different tonics. Made me crazy. But crazy in love!

    My favourite band of all time : but it's hard to take Tony Ten-Fingers and this .. .. selfish overplaying , and hogging all the frequencies . Poor Steve , intermittently peeking through the curtain while Peter's vocal is smothered : sounding like William Blake being dipped in goo by a manic Vincent Price. Sheesh..

    Beautifully done, and you highlight Tony's wonderful ability to compose and arrange interesting keyboard parts *within* the overall band sound, especially during Ikhnaton. Difficult for you to do with tempo, as you say, listening to yourself AND the playback! I didn't realise that the modulations back to As Sure As Eggs was dropped a whole tone live: I suppose this was so Pete could hit the high notes, similarly to the way Yes dropped a whole tone at the end of live versions of Close to the Edge.

    If you get hold of the 'Genesis - Horizons - Live at the Roxy 1973' CD which came out in 2024, you can hear really clearly what Tony was playing on the mellotron at the end of this song (as he's really loud in the soundmix and drowning everyone else out! lol)

    Excellent job. I'm really glad to see each part shown like this of one of my favorite songs. The only thing I'd change is the Mellotron choir. The sound doesn't jump out at you the way it does in the films of Genesis playing it live or the studio recording. This is likely due to the aging of the real Mellotron you appear to be using, and maybe a worn out tape or heads. I found using Gforce's M-Tron Pro the choir sound is closer to the record, and I've seen no evidence the expensive digital Mellotron sounds any better. I had a similar experience the one and only time I play a real Mellotron M400. It sounds liked crap. It was in terrible condition, and the tape & heads no doubt very worn. Made me really appreciate my VST's. Looks cool though. Speaking of my VST's, I replaced my original 1973 Pro Soloist with a VST clone. Very happy with it's replacement. Still has that glorious Pro Soloist sound and aftertouch effects. I'm hearing what sounds like an effects different or something in the organ sound your using, but at times it's also sounding identical depending on where it's used in the song. I think that Hohner Pianet might be the most difficult thing to replicate with a VST, because I haven't seen any decent ones. Only samples, and I think there is a specific fuzz effects pedal or something used which you seem to have too. I have tentative future plans to possibility form a Genesis tribute in the future with a singer if we find the right musicians and a practice room near us. The focus would be more the 80s, but some of the old songs too. I'll be using all VST's like Steve Hackett's band. I pretty much have nearly everything I need at this point. I'd certainly be voting for us to cover Moonlite Knight, Cinema Show medley, In the Cage, etc. Without a doubt I think some of Tony Bank's songs are beyond my ability, but I think I can handle a lot of them still.

    • @stargate1555
      @stargate1555 4 місяці тому

      I agree. Thankfully, the Mellotron M4000D has the M400 and the legendary Chamberlin voice and violin sounds (and all the others) on presets which can also be tweeked to sound like the "old Mellotrons" plus the addition of 02-03-04-05-06 sound cards are a bonus.

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet 3 місяці тому

      @@stargate1555The M4000D and M400 would also do an excellent job. The software is about equally good, and costs a tiny fraction of the price of those. The cost difference in having those in hardware vs software is enormous, but I realize some people hate working with computers. I think M-Tron Pro has been on the market longer, but it's been updated a few times. I've been amazed how expensive those digital Mellotrons are.

    Salut Math. Je ré-écoutais ton excellent cover et c'est la première fois que je remarque que je ne joue pas les mêmes notes de marimba que toi au début. Moi je fais FA-RE-FA...alors que toi tu fais DO-SOL#-DO...Alors je suis retourné au concert de 87 et Tony semble aussi faire des DO-SOL#-DO. J'ai ensuite constaté que ces DO-SOL#-DO sonnaient en fait comme des FA-RE-FA. Donc Tony et toi vous avez transposé. Je me demandais par curiosité si tu savais pourquoi Tony avait fait ça ? Merci !!!

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr 6 місяців тому

      Salut Martin ! Alors sache que la semaine dernière j'ai ré enregistré le morceau de À à Z, car j'ai très mal joué dans cette vidéo. Le marimba est 'normalement accompagné du Prophet qui joue les fameuse "nappes", j'ai réussi à mettre la main sur ce son. Aussi le son de l' Emu 2+ dans cette vidéo n'était pas spot on. Je vais essayer de ré enregistrer en vidéo ce morceau et quelques autres cette année ! Sinon pour te répondre, effectivement le son est transposé, en fait c'est une contrainte du fait que le sample en lui même est composé de 3 patch du Dx7 en midi. Et ces 3 patchs ne sont pas sur la même Key, si tu écoutes bien tu arrives à percevoir les 3 tonalités qui composent le sample. En fait dans le Dx7 quand tout le "bordel" midi est terminé on se retrouve avec un sample transposé

    • @martinvoicesynthmusic1732

      Merci pour ton retour ! J'ai l'impression d'entendre 2 sons : un grave qui fait plus marimba et un aigu du style "souffler dans une bouteille". J'imaginais qu'il y avait tout simplement un octave d'écart entre les deux mais si je comprends ce que tu dis c'est pas tout à fait ça. Est-ce qu'un des samples fait vraiment des DO-SOl#-DO ? Je n'ai pas vraiment d'aptitude ou très peu en sound design alors moi tes sons je les trouve déjà super !!! Mais bon je vais surveiller avec attention la sortie de ta prochaine version et tes futurs videos. À date, je crois que tu n'as pas touché à We Can't Dance ? Tu m'as déjà dit que tu reproduisais aussi les versions studios. Ça serait le fun d'avoir des videos de ça. Bonne continuité ! Bonne Année 2024 !

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr 6 місяців тому

      @@martinvoicesynthmusic1732 c'est tout à fait ça, le sample marimba passe par un appareil appelé soundgoodizer et derrière un EQ vient amplifié les aigus pour donner cet effet de sifflement ! @@MathGsr C'est pas évident de recréer ces sons. Même si on trouve quelque part sur internet quel instrument Tony a utilisé et même quel preset il a utilisé il reste encore à trouver les bons effets !!! Cette marimba en est un belle exemple ! Je m'amuse présentement avec Fading Lights. C'est clair que la drum machine c'est la 808 et je trouve ma version pas si mal mais mon snare est vraiment pas aussi bon. Je crois que c'est parce que j'ai pas trouvé le bon reverb. Aussi, j'ai hésité à savoir si le 2e coup moins fort de certaines percussions c'était un effet de delay ou si c'était l'option de temps fort vs faible du 808. !?!?!?! Pas toujours facile mais c'est ben le fun !
