Genesis - Supper's Ready (Full keyboard cover)

- My favorite song ever. Supper's Ready was planned to be in the Live 1973 album but was deleted as the band requested it.
I decided to use as a backing track the live version of the song that should have been on the album because it's the closest to studio version (compared with Shepperton or Melody), and the only one where Tony is using the Hohner Pianet and not the RMI EP (which I don't own).
The ProSoloist is also not used in this version.
Chapters :
I "Lover's Leap"
II "The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man" 0:00
III "Ikhnaton and Itsacon and Their Band of Merry Men" 3:10
IV "How Dare I Be So Beautiful?" 6:54
V "Willow Farm" 8:25
VI "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet)" 12:51
VII "As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (Aching Men's Feet)" 18:10
A full cover of the keyboard parts played by Tony Banks on Supper's Ready as performed by Genesis during all 1973 show.
Played with a late 60's original Hammond L-100 series organ (L162S), Hohner Pianet + Fuzz and Mellotron M400.
They all go through Leslie speaker.
The settings of the Hammond are exactly the same used by Tony Banks according to the 1973 Live in Bataclan video footage and the Melody 1974 tv show.

Excellent job. There are many awful Genesis renditions on UA-cam that people believe are accurate and well played, but you are the real deal. Well done!
I agree so much about the awful covers, it's pretty painful to watch when you are looking for a perfect rendition of what's played. That's one of the reasons why I started this Channel ;)
Thanks mate !!
I remember hearing this song played as a kid. Born in 85. One day i was just hanging out. And this somg started playing in my head. I hummed the melody to my dad. He like thats foxtrot suppers ready. And wow listened to the whole album. The only way you can do it. One side to another
So true! If you start listening to this masterpiece for some reasons it's impossible to stop
Can't wait for the 12 strings cover!!
Lol sadly one of the many projects I had that will never happen..
Felicitaciones! Gracias por mantener vivo el espíritu de Génesis. Desde Argentina te saludo!
Everything through Leslie speaker! That is very telling for the 'sound'. Thank you!
i love those chords at 1520 to 1540 such deep and powerful chords
Incredible! Didn't imagine the amount of changes of keys Tony did at the time. So well played. Congratulations!!!
Yes ! Supper's is an awesome song all the way and it's just like if you have several different musics in one.
So much work to play it but so good to do haha, thanks a lot
I'm only 5:30 into your video and I'm already having a feeling of wonder and admiration. You couldn't have picked a more difficult piece to cover. Not bad, not bad at all, in fact, very impressive. As a fellow keyboardist........my fingers hurt just trying to imagine the countless hours of practice you put in perfecting your skills to play this piece. Holy moly.
Fantastic!
Had you ever feel that youre in heaven? Because we all felt that when hear your interpretation. Pretty awesome man, absolutely perfect. Greetings from Perú. Long Life Classic Genesis
Incredibile, non ho parole per esprimere la mia gioia! Sei bravissimo, congratulazioni sincere!
8:26 -- sweet! 🌼 Thank you so much for bringing this project into the world.
Congratulations! You are truly a good musician. A difficult, particular and grandiose research in all its details. Absolute wonder! I just have to say Tony Banks
who, he wrote and played all this first, is in the elite of virtuoso keyboard players of all time.
Thanks a lot for these kind words!
I'm very glad you noticed how much i'm looking for details in what Tony Plays.
Can't agree more when you say he is in the elite of keyboard players ever
Félicitations et merci. La musique de Genesis (1ere période) mérite d'être intemporelle.
I've been listening to this song for many years. You made me discover some things that I've never heard before. Thanks you so much!
Then my job is done ! I'm glad you enjoyed this.
Thank you mate
Mathieu, you'r a true God. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you so much for this. This helps me out a TON.
Darrin Crawford.
Always there Darrin 😁
As I said the Real god is definitely Tony, but this helps to understand his genius! Thanks mate ;)
OMG I've find the holy grail kkkkkkkkkkk, I play the keyboard too and I'm stuck on some parts of this song that your video helps me a lot. thanks for the video \m/
I'm glad if I can help other keyboardists ! Enjoy 😁
Amazing work here. Thanks for the upload!
Amazing ... you really nailed it 💪
Congrats
Thanks a lot!!
Beautifully done, and you highlight Tony's wonderful ability to compose and arrange interesting keyboard parts *within* the overall band sound, especially during Ikhnaton. Difficult for you to do with tempo, as you say, listening to yourself AND the playback! I didn't realise that the modulations back to As Sure As Eggs was dropped a whole tone live: I suppose this was so Pete could hit the high notes, similarly to the way Yes dropped a whole tone at the end of live versions of Close to the Edge.
Blown away..... that was incredible to watch and listen to. What talent on your side..... I hear things like this and the wizardry of Tony Banks STILL is hard to fathom. I get chills everytime I hear this, and a few extra chills just now after this. Thank You Thank You Thank You !! Bravo !! Spot on for sure.
toujours incroyable !!😍
Very good made! I made the keyboards and bass of the studio version but with new keyboards, you have all those vintage keyboards, excellent!
Nothing can beat the original keyboards haha.
@@MathGsr That's true!
Bien fait!
Absolutely beautiful
Brilliant! Congrats.
Hey Math
you showed up in my YT feed. I am a big Genesis fan. Also play keyboards (barely).
I think you have done a wonderful job here , and I really respect the time you spent figuring this out and performing it.
Rock on my brother
Contemporâneo , Brilhante 🌟💖*****❤
Amazing work ! thank you.
Thank you for Watching mate !
Bienvenue !
good job man 🤙
superb
Perfection!
i never realized just how busy Banks' playing is on this tune !!!
like??? if i were the producer on this song i honestly would have fought with him on this thinking like "youre gonna overpower the vocal and confuse the focus of the song" in reference to all the counterpoint, but clearly in hindsight his playing works phenomenally so its a really great thing that i hadnt been born yet to interfere with the process 😂
Que belleza!!!
Très bon boulot
Amazing stuff. My eyes were fixed on the screen trying to clumsily follow along... dare I say a whole Lamb for Easter?
Hahaha 😋 Merry Christmas mate !
Awesome
AMAIZING
Nice!
Yo! Superb video and sound. I look forward to more videos. See you soon. Greetings from Germany, Hannes 🎧🎷👯🎷🪕
Thank you mate !
Germany is very close from where I am :D
Good Good Good... 👏👏👏
🎉🎉
Very beautiful work...! Maybe you could generate a midi file from this...?
Lovely
Unbeliavable!!! You really made justice to Tony's play! Congratulations! The Prog legendes still lives on! o/o/o/
If you have time, please be welcome to see my rendition of Firth Of Fifth.
Cheers from Brazil!
Amazing !!!!! Thank you very much !!!!!! What about Fountain of Salmacis... ? :-)
It was planned! I took a brake with my channel for a while, but I'm thinking about coming back
Wonderful. It's a shame we can't see the whole organ settings cut on the left by the camera angle..
Most of the settings are basically Presets from the Hammond.
For the Drawbars settings it's been more than a year ago so I can't remember, but it was pretty basic, and I remember to not fully open the Drawbars to increase the Perc sound
@@MathGsr Thanks for that! And keep up the wonderful work!
This is fuckin awesome
Another outstanding rendition! Can you share the hammond drawbars settings? Thanks!
Well I remember that I mostly used presets from my L100.
That's my mistake, I always used the preset for the Lower keyboard while in apocalypse it must be drawbars..
For the chapters where I used drawbars on the upper, I remember that I never opened a drawbar higher than 3 to increase the sound of the Perc, it worked perfectly well excepted if you have to play longer notes. Which is not the case in this song, longer notes are played on chapter with full organ preset.
Always used the 2nd Perc also, never the 3rd.
I can't remember exactly what was my drawabars settings but it was something like 233322110. Just adjusted it by ear directly while playing, took me around 3 days.
I must check if I still own the original rush of the video, I edited the video to zoom on the keyboard so on the original rush I'll be able to see drawbars
Very well done -- congratulations! Seeing the work put in to play something like that always makes me wonder: what level of musical ability to does it take to create and write something like that? Tony Banks' composition skills are pretty incredible.
Thanks Jeff !
Considering Tony wrote most of his parts in his student room when he was 17 yo, we can consider Tony as a true god yeah :D
And I won't talk about the Apocalypse solo which is imo the best thing ever played on a keyboard.
But about playing only, Supper's Ready is actually not that hard (compared with Slippermen for example), the most difficult thing is the duration (26 min)..
Great job on a very long song, I think you are the first person who has done the entire song on keyboards. Here's another fun thought, with the improvement in keyboard sounds (ie Yamaha etc.) why not do the acoustic guitar arp parts on keyboards, as long as it makes sense.
Thanks !
If I remember well there is only one other entire song cover, but it's not very accurate at keyboard point (but still amazing considering he did all instruments and singing).
It took me almost a year to be able to transcribe the whole song almost exactly as it was played !
As I said in the video (1:35), I will do Tony Banks 12 string guitar parts on another video because I want to keep this as a Keyboard cover.
Otherwise the keyboards sounds can't be better since this is the exact keyboards used by Tony back in 1973.
Just wanted to ask if that’s a Pianet above the Mellotron? Great cover!
"Tony, what are the chords in this song?" - "All of them."
😀
-Tony how many chords you wanna use?
-yes
Hello what was the mellotron sound in willow farm?
The string/brass!
wooooooow
Eres un máquina
What settings were on the mellotron for this song?
There is no settings, you can just select 3 sounds. (Brass/Strings, choirs, flute).
The specific sound come from the Leslie Speaker
@@MathGsr was it the brass?
@@Mangojuice1973 it's an M400 so there is not a brass like a mk2, but yes it sounds pretty close with brass
Are you eventually going to do can utilities and the coastliners?
Yes ! Definitely
@@MathGsr can’t wait I’m very glad I get to watch your videos
@Kevin Heilbronner Hahaha this week I'll start to record the next song.
I can promise the next video will be there no later than next week
Not sure about the "guitar solo" section of Ikhnaton but I always felt like Tony never did exactly the same thing there over the years. But is it just me or is Tony basically playing all of Supper's Ready with just one organ sound up till the last notes of the Apocalypse solo? (and invoking additional reverb at the end of Ikhnaton)?
After 1972 the "guitar solo" was played on the Pro Soloist with Fuzz Guitar preset.
In the 1972 show video Tony played it on the Pianet with fuzz box, just like the intro of Hogweed.
For the Hammond, it's clearly not the same preset through the song
@@MathGsr I am talking about the comping during Steve's solo in Ikhnaton, not the arpeggios in duel with Steve (which come after).
As hammond is concerned, I don't see you switching much. I think Sanctuary man starts with Ensemble on lower and drawbars with percussion on higher. Ikhnaton adds percussion on lower (and engages additional reverb in the transition to How dare I be so beautiful). And then switch to Theater brass at the end of Apocalypse solo?
@@santibanks I can't see which pianet solo you're talking about, can you give me a timecode?
About the Hammond, Theater Brass doesn't exist on the L series, otherwise I changed the presets during the "video transition" most of the time
: )
awesome job man!! what were your lower drawbar settings?
Thanks mate!
It's not drawbars, it's the Ensemble preset, excepted at 12:05 where you have to play only with the white drawbars. (The 2nd white is opened a bit more)
it sounds like theres a different sound at the end of willow's farm. during the flute solo
@@samanipreston yes as I said at 12:05 it is a drawbars setting where you only use white drawbars.
It's something like 2507004 (there is no Brown drawbars for the lower)
A few problems with the chords in the final section, but major kudos for the rest.
Which chords exactly?
I'm pretty sure it's the same chords played by Tony on this live version
@@MathGsr When I get a few moments I will list chords of the final section. I have the ear, but no musical training.
@@garyvanremortel5218 it's OK, it's just that I did put a lot of work for this video and I always thought it was almost perfectly played, so any good review is always welcome
@@MathGsr from the "And it's" part I believe the chords are: C# G# Gdim G# C# G# Gdim Fm. Fm Csus4 Fm Gsus4 C Gsus4 F C G. Then continues with 'Can't you feel our souls ignite.'
@@MathGsr Your efforts are appreciated. Those are a lot of notes to remember. I'm dyslexic so I could never do that, but I do have a good ear. Tony was a masterful musician.
So like... Do you ever just run through the whole 73 set list in one go, to see if you can?
Yes back in the days where I Used to dream of being a professional musician, that's what I did most of my free time, with the original in background.
With the audience you really feel like you are Tony in the Rainbow Theatre.
But to do this with the 1987 wembley show was better.
@@MathGsr oh man, yeah, that's a much longer set so I'm sure it gives you a lot more time and material to have fun with. It's impressive to be able to play ANY amount of Genesis, let alone such a wide variety.
@@TheHive616 exactly, and the 1986/87 set allows you to also play old genesis songs (itc medley with supper's ready for exemple), from abacab to brazilian that was my favorite set, and the 80's fm synths... Oh god ..
I lost any hope of being professional, so I totally changed my mind, I think I Haven't played any Genesis stuff since almost 3 months.. but pretty sure I Can still handle Apocalypse ! Just like bike, impossible to forgot it hahaha
I wonder how much all this equipment must have cost🤔😅
My favourite band of all time : but it's hard to take Tony Ten-Fingers and this .. .. selfish overplaying , and hogging all the frequencies . Poor Steve , intermittently peeking through the curtain while Peter's vocal is smothered : sounding like William Blake being dipped in goo by a manic Vincent Price. Sheesh..
1.36 "At this point Tony puts away his 12-string"
OMG You ARE GREAT. Suggestion: put the live version of the original 1973 video in a quadrant in the lower left corner, as you play.
That's a very great idea! It would have prevent from the cut during the video.
So sad you didn't post your comment earlier :(
@@MathGsrYou could also pan the original sound on one side, and you performance on the other, so we can balance the sound to our liking.😉
@@altair7001 No the stereo is very important especially when you play on old analog keyboards
@@MathGsr OK Thanks!
