  • A full cover of the keyboard parts played by Tony Banks on The Knife as performed by Genesis during all 1973 show.
    Played with a late 60's original Hammond L-100 series organ (L162S), the same series used by Tony banks on the early years until he replaced it with a T100 Series in 1974.
    Hammond goes through Leslie speaker.
    -The settings of the Hammond are exactly the same used by Tony Banks according to the 1973 Live in Bataclan video footage.

    Other :
    -The Live 1973 version has A LOT of tempo variation during the song. That's why you can sometimes ear that i'm not 100% along the track.
    -The short video clip used after the solo part comes from Live in Bataclan 1973 since there is not any other footage of the knife live in these years (thanks Genesis museum for this amazing footage)

      I have never had a music theory lesson, but I guess this is something not common just like a 7/8 or 9/8 solo

      @@MathGsr It's not., neither is a 9/8 solo (Supper's Ready) or a 13/8 intro (Firth of Fifth). They created the compositions, worked the preliminaries out, then realized "oh, this is in???". Just like Turn it on Again, Rutherford had no idea he had a diamond pop riff that was actually in 13/8. It sounded good so they kept it (BTW Phil let him know about the time signature)

      Ok I see.. and it's not surprising.
      These young boys were incredible.
      But they (especially Tony) had a classical music education, which must help a lot I guess.
      Imo Mad Man Moon is the most amazing piece composed by Tony. Simply impossible to play all keyboards layer live, at least 2 (very good) keyboardist is needed!

    Hello, can you please give us the organ drawbar settings for this song ad well as other basic nites on how to get the sound, I could use it to recreate it live when performing the song, or if I qanted to use the organ tone on an original piece. @@MathGsr One time, I painstakingly tracked down and sampled the piece that Tony sampled for the "It's Gonna Get Better" intro lol. I can send you the sample if you're interested in doing that song sometime. It's a single cello (or maybe a few cellos in unison) playing three notes, and Tony plays a chord with it so the lower notes are playing slower.

      @@allenbaker_music thanks a lot it's very kind!
      But I already have the original sample :D Tony Banks took it from the ballet Gayane's Adagio and had it on the Emulator 1 only during the mama tour.
      Of course I will do this song when i'll be doing the mama tour. I will either when i'm done with the early Genesis or when I will have a bit more Space in my room, considering that I must use the Hammond also on the mama tour..

    Nice! Wonderful! How do you set up your vibrato width on to get that sound on 4:15 ?

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  2 роки тому +5

      You can either set your Leslie on Fast position, that's what Tony did on the studio, or just turn on all vibrato settings on the Hammond as he did live (vibrato chorus + normal + fast) :)

    Great job! What is the drowbar setting for the upper and lower manual?

    • @MathGsr
      @MathGsr  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks !
      The upper is almost full drawbars excepted for the 6th, 7th and 8th harmonic which are almost closed to increase the perc sound.
      The lower is not on drawbars.

      @@a_cord this song is impossible to play accurate without a real Hammond L100 - T100 with the original presets. Even with vst it's impossible to have the 100% right sounds.
      But full drawbars on the lower could sound close, you can try
