i think something people tend to get wrong a lot is that Kel's not like the others. Everyone was reduced to ruins at the death of Mari, but the purpose of Kel isn't that he didn't care at all. He didn't have a thing like Sunny where he pretended nothing ever happened, he didn't have a thing like Aubrey in which he "didn't care" about it anymore, and he didn't have his own thing where he was using his external and positive personality to hide some overarching darkness. Kel's character is built around one fundamental aspect he has that the rest of the group did not. He could cope with trauma in a healthy way.

Since metro NYC spans across multiple states, Faraway could either be in NY state, Connecticut, or New Jersey, more likely CT or NJ as the coastal part of NYC is very urban, but there's also a chance it could be set on Long Island.
