Hi UA-cam, I'm Ali. Welcome to my channel!
As well as playing and reviewing all kinds of table-top, roleplaying, board, card and dice games, I'll be getting to grips with the underlying mechanics of modern board games, learning to paint and 3d print my own miniatures, investigating what it takes to design and publish a game, discovering the history behind some of favorite handheld console games and generally doing things a grown man should have stopped doing years ago.
Oh .. And I'll probably play some video games too.
Thanks for watching, welcome to Gaming Indoors!

I wonder how many newcomers are coming here as they picked up Warhammer The Old World metal minis ?
youre handsome :)
Good points, thanks...
I don’t understand why you have room echo up with a lapel microphone you dint have to talk so loud
Candyland is an example of a game with no dice that is as equally bad as
I politely disagree with the sentiment that games should punish wrong choices. The choices present should be between what’s best and what’s desirable..enticing them to choose an immediate bonus over taking the long term actionable path..not to derail the game but to give them choices..in splendor for instance o can take any card one time and earn a wild token. Do this too often and you’ll loose the game because taking the bonus makes the game take more turns to play out victory.
Love letter turns off a lot of people because of the text. I have a difficult time getting it to the table.
Lol cheap Chinese mat. (I bet everything is from china) Haha 😆
The quality of this video is unreal... you have made an amazing job here. I would estimate that you have spent at least a week in this video creatiom
Do you not need to worry about plagiarism?
Here 4 years later and I think this is great. You speak very clear and well. Thank you!
It amazes me how few likes this video has. Your videos are some of the most useful on the topic that I have seen so far.
FYI: not all games are euro 😮
what should also be mentioned (when using mechanics as modular design pieces): each mechanic sorta has a "flavor" so to say, it adds something specific to the dish if u for example add too many highly complicated mechanics, its like adding tablespoons of spices to a recipe - its just too much of 1 thing different mechanics contribute differently to the end result
luck is undesirable in every imo i know this sounds subjective and close-minded af, but if there is luck in a game its mostly just appeal for the gambling addict type to be more exacting what u want (at least in some, but not all games) is uncertainty - and luck elements such as drawing cards or rolling dice just happen to be the go-to solution for most designers (but certainly not the only way). without uncertainty "games" become puzzles. if u take yomi out of chess its a puzzle for example (one could even argue that chess is already a full on puzzle because the possibility space is (heavily) limited at all times)
the mechanics section is too granular for casual players, they r potatoes, to them they mean nothing anyway, let alone an icon saying something like "traitor!"
I very much dislike the idea of "modularly" expanding upon a core ruleset. Rules should derive from the overarching vision; a game should want to achieve something. Additional rules should sprout to facilitate that, not to "add more rules that click somewhat to the existing".
I've found over the past 4 months just how difficult it is to get the game made. Choosing to have playing pieces made that are not standard is a nightmare. Having them made in China is not easy and prices for the same piece can range from $0.45 to $10. It's a mess and if you think you can just get some made to start with forget it. Even changing the paint of a piece already in manufacture to keep the cost down will most of the time have a minimum order of 10,000pcs per piece. I have 9 different pieces per game making the cost out of reach. Designing the game and creating the graphics is definitely the easy part.
hi! For all board game designers out there, I made a little tool to speed up card generation/updates for my own board game prototype (Danger Race) and it's now available for everyone, check this out: ua-cam.com/video/Sm32cd3rYoE/v-deo.html Cheers!
I think Justice of the Peace is a little bit like a Notary. It allows yu to do some stuff like witness certain documents and conduct wedding and stuff. Given his assault on that one guy at a game convention, I don't think he should be eligible for any sort of actual law enforcement position.
7:40 Zachary Strebeck attorney at law states that if you select the wrong copyright registration application for your board game, the US Copyright Office [USCO] will deny your registration - *I disagree!* *A registration for a game will cover ALL of the copyrightable elements that appear in the work, regardless if the game has been registered as a literary work or a work of the visual arts.* If your game board contains BOTH visual artwork AND text, you may be able to choose either the Visual Art or Literary application to register your game. If you deem that the Visual Art component of your game is the most prominent work of authorship vs. the text (literary work), you would register the game as a Visual Art work. Since you know the scope of your game better than anyone, the USCO will trust your determination. If, however, your game (visual art registration) does not include any appreciable amount of artwork authorship (then you’ll receive a USCO email asking for clarification). You can explain your choice of using the Visual Art application by including a note (letter) in your application to the USCO’s Registration Specialist (the person who will review your application). You’re limited to 1995 characters & spaces in the “Certificate” section of your application (“Note to Copyright Office - Optional” section). If you require additional space, you can include your information in a Word document and upload it separately with your deposit (aka, the board game artwork) - the Word document file name can be *Note To Copyright Office.* You should also identify all your board game’s copyright authorship in your note to the USCO and also in the “Author Created” field, and if applicable, also in the “New Material Included” field of your application. If need be, you can also clarify other points of your registration in the note section or Word document. For additional information, see *“US Copyright Office Compendium”* (Visual Art Works), Section 910 (page 25 of 63) (Games, Toys, Dolls, Stuffed Animals, and Puppets). If your game mostly comprises of text, then you can register it as a Literary Work. See *“US Copyright Office Compendium”* (Literary Works), Section 714 (page 22 of 62) (Games).
14:40 *The Poor Man’s Copyright:”* The US Copyright Office writes, “The practice of sending [mailing] a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a ‘poor man’s copyright.’ *There is NO [emphasis added] provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR REGISTRATION [emphasis added].* The poor man’s copyright is a *MYTH!* To best legally protect your board game, get it *IMMEDIATELY* registered with the US Copyright Office.
Does this work for metal aswell?
He states below it is an old metal miniature.
1:10 wasn't expecting to see the scopa here!
Thanks Ali, I’ve been thinking about making a game with my friend for a long time
I've just done exactly this! After 31 years, I dug around in the cellar and found loads of unpainted beaky rogue trader marines, space hulk terminators and imperial guard. Bought a ton Of paints and watched some videos. It's slow going, but I think I already have a better idea of what I'm doing compared to when I was 15
Nicely made points & presentation, only lacking is visualization
Awesome delivery, editing and content. Great work
You have done an exceptional job explaining. Thank you so much. I have learned a lot from your videos.
Tabletop Simulator is also a really good source, only the game and like 2 or 3 hours learning how to code in it and you can literally make anything It lets you get custom models, textures for cards with any custom size you want, etc And the only thing you have to pay is the game that's usually on sale, I got it at like 5usd on Christmas last time and you can literally play with anyone that has it so free playtesting and maybe even new friends
Very helpful
Thank you for this video and your channel. I hope you'll be able to make more in the future

So just acetone?
Monopoly sucks, not only due to roll and move butbbecause yountry tonruin uour opponent. So if someone wants to play and younwant that player to hate the game, while you win, do this... there is a limited supply of houses. So doneverythingbyo hoard houses. Do not convert to hotela. So as you have more houses, ajd the aupply of houses is depleted, it becomes a slow attrition and boring game., So after the game ends you suggest to play a more constructive game with more fun. I know it is despicable. But the more you draw that person away from Monopoly the better the chances to make that player to discover better games.
What's the difference between the Holocaust and the Salem witch trials? Salem didn't have any real witches to kill. Seriously, the best way to survive is never cross the Putnam/Parris faction, never borrow money from the Putnams, and never oppose the proceedings or let anyone know you don't believe in them.
It's been a minute since you've posted, everything good?
Custom die that's rolled at the same time as the movement die and modifies the movement die or the turn outcome in some way.
Like videogames, a game should build on it's best mechanic, maximizing its importance.
Hey, great job with making a very clear list! The only caveat i see - is that many icons might be off-putting for people looking at a box in the store, for example. From a marketing perspective, that can feel confusing and off-putting - you would glance through and decide to put it back and go for something that telegraphs what game is about in a shorter manner. Again, only a feeling - but something like 3-5 icons would feel more immediately readable. This might also depend on audience. Like complex games for hardcore audience can expect people from that audience to appreciate greater breakdown. While a more casual audience might prefer less icons, grabbing only a gist of what's inside. Something to think about anyways. thank you for great video and keep up the good work! <3
I hope all is well!🙂 I sure miss your videos and I'm wondering how your design(s) are coming along.
Hey there! i know i keep saying it but I really do want to get back to making vids...
Adding a way to mitigating a die roll is my favourite.
With the points Victory, you may also have a subtype of that, where you want to get different typem of "Victory points", and once you get an amount of a certain type, getting more of that type does not get you closer tocwinning - something like scientific Victory 7 wonders duel, where only the first copyright of each science symbol gets you closer to winning, Yes, duplikatem give you a different reward, but do not literally get you closer to a victory directly. Also, "player elimination" type of win condition, apart from social deductiom games is also great in two player games, anything from chess to magic to any wargame ever.
You can also roll 3 Dice, and you need to decide, which one you want to use for movement, which for actions and the tird dice for ressources. So the 3 dices are more Balanced and you can choose what to use the biggest rolls for.
Thank you I’ll send you a copy of my finished product 😄
The game looks interesting but could you do a live play testing video where you play with a friend or relative? That was we get to see the game in action. Great video as always!
Your videos have inspired me to team up with a group of people when I enter university and make a board game. Still have 2 years of planning before I go to the Netherlands to study. So I hope I'll find some people that are just as enthusiastic as I am
Hello, I have a question do you know the game Gloomhaven jaws of the lion. In this game there is a notebook full of boards. Do you know were could I get one for my own game ?
