Totally agree. Bonhommes' Lucky Lukes were great! This is why singers feat in other artists records too, to find new audience. I was only after new Lucky Luke story but found also new interesting artist in Bonhomme. I've been after his The Marquis of Anaon(Cinebook)since but they're not that easy(read affordable) to get in Finland. I heard the same story about Blutch pen name😄Bonhomme's LL versions felt like true fans loveletters while Blutch is much closer to original in style and writing. I had to check Nitroglycerin as it sounded so familiar. As it turned out I got that album in Finnish. I got it as early as 80´s and it still has Morris as artist. I then compared it to Cinebook and they published it in 2015(!) which makes it look like a very recent story within their selection. But no matter how hard I try I can't remember what kind of story it was😅I know some day soon I'll start my Complete Chronological Lucky Luke Read Through.

Wow! You're a true Angouléme veteran. Actually I am going back this year. This time I got myself one extra day off from work so I'll be there Friday and Saturday. I intend to take more photos and videos than last time and see more places too. And I'm flying in with empty suitcases...😄

@ Oh, yes! The feeling of just being able to explore and browse all those thousands of comics is a rush that is almost unbearble. And that's just one part of the Festival! This year Festival granted me a Press Pass. I hope it'll help me to achieve better understanding of BD scene. That would make spreading the gospel of European comics easier😊

I agree. It is better to have these creators use their own voice and style and play to their personal strenghts. While emulating Morris style is achievable - there are so many albums and panels to use as preference - writing in Goscinnys' style is hardly going to work.

@@HerrFrog I’ve avoided new Lucky Lukes in the fear of being disappointed. It’s not easy to copy Morris’s style although it looks simple at a quick glance. Having said that, it’s still easier to copy Morris graphics than Goscinnys’ writing. This is why I eventually stopped buying new Lucky Lukes’. This ”re-imagined”-series has allowed also the writing to find new styles and it makes it easier for me to approach it. There is no burden of the past. Bonhomme was given a second album as the first one was popular. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more stories from Blutch too.

@@tahutoa This is not done in the style of Morris. It does look much closer to Morris than two of the Matthieu Bonhommes’ stories but it’s still considered to be a re-imagining and/or homage. In fact now that I started to analyze styles I’d say that Untamed differs from Morris’ style the most on colors. Untamed is noticeably heavier and darker on colors than anything Morris ever did.

I have read Burma Chronicles. It's been a long time though so I have forgotten most of it - which is the perfect moment for re-reading😊It must be a very different relationship to a comic that describes your world when for others it's strange and exotic. My love for European comics creates the diversity in my collection. I think we're lucky to have this structure build into the local(European) scene.

At least Guy kept I real. He did not romanticize or glamorize the country. The local characters were pretty authentic too. Thanks for your responses. Good luck with your collection and with your health as well.

@@arnodk2852 I have Shakara Complete Collection in my waiting list😍Should come out in March. Looks stunning and suitably over the top sci-fi. I often see similarities to many artists in comics and it definitely makes sense.

@@arnodk2852 I just wish 2000AD would bring out Vol 2 to Proteus Vex. Apparently they published different format that included 3 story arcs but not the last one🤷‍♂️It was sold out before I even heard of it. Not sure why they don’t collect all stories.

Anita Bomba…I hate to love it and love to hate it. I’ve read the two volumes I have many times. Half of me screams to get the rest of the books and the other half never gets around to order them. Also, I want to do video about them but for that I’d need all the volumes😅In short the problem I have with it is weird out-of-sync of writing and art.

I've had similar thoughts as you about having comics printed to order for any language. This may bring contractual issues but as AI translation and technology developes it's something publisher might have to solve. I'm also dreaming of having Lens-style program that would act as a see-through layer on top of the whole screen with any other app. It would translate everything on the fly. It would be very useful with digital comics.

​@@analogcomicsI work as an AVN (adult visual novel) proofreader, so I know what you said about the intricacies of translation is spot-on. And now, with much dialogue involving shorthand phone-style texting, it's even more difficult. Texting shorthand is its own language.

Now THAT is the most considerate offer anyone has made for me. I do have to skip it though. My TBR-pile is so far beyond reasonable that I need to work through it before allowing myself to buy more😅Also my unread comics barely fit to my shelves and I'm having to face some hard questions that all comics fans rather avoid. ...Then again it's a quite some time until May...🤔

We have a lot in common. My life has been saturated with Franco-Belgian comics and now - in my 5th decade - I want to finally learn how deep the rabbit hole goes.

@@francoisdemorcy5084 I hope they still reprint trades. I also prefer them but had to wait for Omni as some of the trades went oop and getting them as second hand in Finland is very unlikely.

@analogcomics checked the trades most volumes are low. 2 volumes are like 20 to 30. . May have to get omni

My first Sandman comic was in Finnish. When I read the same thing in English I updated it all to English. Gaimans' language was so well written that Finnish translation never really reach the finer details. I'm sure that by using Google Lens I might miss some of those finer details too. But I don't want that to be the reason for never reading some comics. I tried learning French but gave up very quickly😅I always recommend starting from just one foreign comic to see if Lens is something you feel comfortable with.

This is the first time I hear about it. I immediately searched it. Looks very interesting - both the story and art - but I didn't find English print. I rarely come across with comics in Spanish or Italian. I know I'm missing many great reads because of that as those are two very active markets for comics. The only way for me to get them is if they are translated to Finnish - which happens less and less all the time.

😅I just pronounced it like the guitar brand Ibanez. I have many guitars from that brand so it comes naturally😇Feeling much better now, thanks🤘

I visited Fantask too and found(and bought) things that were not available at Faraos. I did not know it had The World's Oldest Comic Book Store prestige on it! Now I'm even happier I supported them. You touch here a subject that I've been thinking a lot after visiting Faraos Cigarer. I, too, felt a bit annoyed how well Denmark has it with comics and how small Finland's market is even though our countries are very similar by many metrics. It was more like disappointment for lost opportunity seeing that the size of the market doesn't really explain the much smaller selection in my own country. At the same time I was absolutely stunned and happy by how well Danish had it. A little confusing moment. But just like you I've learned to enjoy of whatever we do have available. I don't even care about the formats etc. As long as something is available - even in low quality print - it is much better than not having it at all.☺

In fact most of the history ones are linked in some way. I don't have many vids out yet but if you choose the ones with a blue background in thumbnails you get more of the history stuff. There is more to tell for sure and Goscinny will pop up somewhere. It's unavoidable as he's been around and everywhere. Also I'd like to do at least one about his life through happier circumstances.

@@ftloc Thank you🤘🏻Editing took a lot of time which I didn’t really have. This video was important to me personally. I’m happy most seem to be OK with the tone it brings. I was uncertain and about to abandon the ship many times. Goscinny’s life has many more stories and fortunately not all are as gloomy. Some really fun bits there too. I’ll most likely return to them at some point but now I have my sights on other characters and creators.

I am intentionally trying to keep things simple and straightforward. This means I have to leave out a lot of finer details as they would create too many new angles and that would make my videos even longer😅

This is a very interesting comment as it shows an angle I didn't see. I found the story moving also but I didn't categorize it as depressing. Having said that It is at least a sad story no matter how you approach it. Gladly there are many funny stories about Goscinny too - which I'd like to document in future. Being a Finn I started from the dark side first😬 Very interesting detail about his surname. Thanks!

@analogcomics Yeah, but it's a name of Polish origin. Polish is my native language, and I accidentally misspelled that. Imagine if he had a Finnish surname (a simple, common word in Finnish), and *that's* what you tripped on, not the French part. 😄

@ BTW do they translate biographies of these European famous creators in Polish? We only get stuff about Herge in Finnish. I’ve heard Poland has an active comics scene.

Beevor has a great style for history! I especially love his Stalingrad book. It was like being there among the foot soldiers. He writes as if it's a novel despite all being facts. And yes...the French. They have the revolution in their blood😄 In fact there's another really really good story about that inside BD that I hope get documented one day. It makes me smile every time I think about it.

I really appreciate this. Thank you. There's still many good stories of Goscinny that I had to leave out. I hope to document them some day. Metal Hurlant Team of Druillet, Moebius and Dionnet must have been one wild human experiment😅All very esoteric and focused deeply in their craft. It's very hard to run a business like that. I have an idea why it all self destruct but I'd have to excavate more info before putting it on video. I think I'll move away from Goscinny on purpose for the next parts. I want to expand the landscape of BD a bit. I know I'll return to Goscinny at least when it's time to tackle the case of Lucky Luke.

@@analogcomics This is all very exciting!! Wow! I have heard that the relationship between Morris and Goscinny (during Lucky Luke) had it's ups and downs. Also I would LOVE to find out more details about how that partnership compared to Goscinny and Uderzo (Asterix). Another great video would be investigating the MIND OF MOEBIUS as far as did he ever have any "creative" relationship with peers that he worked with that actually lasted? I am currently reading an Awesome biography on him called: Doctor Moebius and Mister Gir and it is giving some interesting insight into this creative, chaotic and esoteric mind of his. Cheers🍻

There's nothing like it - before or since. Morris' art also found a voice of it's own. It's very much in Marcinelle School-style and yet distinctly it's own thing. Lucky Luke will definitely be the subject of one these vids at some point. My big question is if I should read all Lucky Lukes or all Spirous next. I know it's going to be either or as I've wanted to do both for some time now. The best thing is that you found Lucky Luke! I'm also late for many other long running series and I try to enjoy the fact that there is already so much to read in them😊

Before, I only knew of the character via the animated movies. I dunno why I never read the comics as a kid.

@@teddybeer6206 I have similar thoughts with books. For me it often happens so that if I watch the movie first I'll probably not read the original book(although they're very likely better than the movie). And if you get into a comic book character through cartoon it "becomes" the original version. Like being a fan of a song not knowing it's a cover version. Although with European comics for many the obstacle for reading them has been availability...

Very good points. I talk about this subject in the video I mentioned in this one(link in the description). Having a BD magazine in France was definitely important part of the business reasoning. I assume the French Comic Code made the decision easier too as it was sometimes more gentle with local content. Goscinny felt the Comics Code hard through Lucky Luke as he had to come up with stories of the fastest gunman in the west where noone gets killed😅Jean-Michel Charlier was even summoned to appear in person in front of French Ministry of Information to explain his comics. He'd penned a story that showed communists in a bad light(Vietnam War) and it was a no-no for these guardians of righteousness. It was purely a political decision.

The way I see it, just with the effort, you did pay your respects. I understand it would feel more tangible next to his grave. I wonder if there not being a sign is a decision of the family or the restrictions of the graveyard.

Humanoids started as a French company Les Humanoides Associés(More on that in my Asterix and the Evolution of Bande Dessinee-video)Maybe that connection has to do with their decision to stick with the hardcover. Lucky Luke is published in English by Cinebook. They publish single album only in softcover. However Cinebook has very nice hardcover Complete-series for Lucky Luke. It comes with lots of extras too. I believe choosing softcover for USA is a price-point decision. US readers tend to value comics by dollars/page which is unfavorable for European story telling. I’m always happy to hear from US readers who have found their way into European comics. I appreciate the effort as they must be hard to find.

@analogcomics I grew up on European comics. My aunt would come back from Holland with lots of comics magazines for me in Dutch. I remember one magazine, Titanic, which was very Metal Hurlant/Pilote in art style.

It's a bit esoteric as each section accentuates different creators personality. And oh boy, the creators from that time were quite chracters! I can only imagine how much inner strenght and balancing it required from Goscinny to keep it all together. The Pilote Revolution book is not that interesting alone but when put into larger context(which I try to achieve here) it becomes very useful.
