    Pro tip: instead of doing the "reparent and follow position" shenanigans with the Hand bone, you can just have the hand bone Copy Rotation of the IK Control. This will result in them overlapping, which won't be a problem when you give the IK Control a unique shape like a cube. This is simpler and also maintains the heirarchy of your deform bones.

  • @ygypt
    @ygypt 12 днів тому

    So, I've followed both of your tutorials, and they take a slightly different aproach, and it's led me to have both a Deform rig, and Driver rig, and then these additional Control rigs for the limbs on top of that. Is the Driver rig redundant? or does it act as a layer of abstration from the Deform rig for game-readyness? Wouldn't you be able to get away with a Deform rig, a Control rig in normal FK, and then IK limb rigs without having to create another set of FK rigs?

    I've been bashing my head against this for so long. I made the copies, turned off deform, put them in different layers, named them, and hit the remove thing. then im at the part where you actually set up the IK and when i put IK on the IK hand bone it is moving the model, like it's not supposed to move the model why is it moving? i have checked before and after to ensure the bones on the layer can't move the model but after IK is applied it moves it's 4am and imma scream

    • @richstubbsanimation
      @richstubbsanimation 14 днів тому

      Theres a couple of things you could try. First setting the "Chain length" in the IK constraint to 2, this setting makes sure the IK is only controlling 2 bones in the chain and not all of them. You also want to check that the IK bones are not skinned to the mesh. You can do this in object mode by selecting the model, then the green triangle on the left hand side to open up the "object properties panel." Here you can scroll down to "vertex groups" and make sure it is just your deform bones that are listed here.

    • @Fizzlegear
      @Fizzlegear 14 днів тому

      @@richstubbsanimation yeah did the chain length thing. it moves the mesh, though the bone doesn't follow completely. I just checked the vertex groups and the ik and fk bones aren't there even after adding the constraint and it starts moving the mesh. the only dot is on the IK layer of bone collections

    • @Fizzlegear
      @Fizzlegear 14 днів тому

      I just noticed if I set the IK to 3 it moves the whole arm as though the upper arm bone is moving instead of keeping it there while the rest moves

    • @richstubbsanimation
      @richstubbsanimation 14 днів тому

      @@Fizzlegear adding bones to bone collections doesn't remove their influence on the mesh. All bone collections do is organise bones by showing and hiding them, nothing more. It sounds like all you need to do is make a driver for the bone constraints of the IK

      Having an extra layer of deformation is a cleaner way to work. Could you technically create a rig without doing this, yes, however adding in a buffer (in this case driver bones) allows you to work cleaner, as well as being able to add rig functionality like IK/FK and other additional rig features. The Tldr is it allows you to make advanced, and cleaner rigs. And is good practice to get in the habit of doing

    Would you mind elaborating on the roles, the use and the difference of the DEFORM and DRIVER bones? I seem to misunderstand something major here and I may sound stupid but here is my summary. To me it makes no sense to copy the whole rig, then create constraints so every DEFORM bone mimics every respective DRIVER bone's transformation. I comprehended it as excessive repetition and the DEFORM bones seem superfluous since it's function got outsourced. When it comes to rigging I am a beginner at best.

      @@richstubbsanimation I still don't understand the difference between the two. What does the driver rig buffer? And what is ment by rig functionality? Do you maybe have a link to another tutorial that explains and visualizes it?

    • @richstubbsanimation
      @richstubbsanimation 15 днів тому

      @therealKrak by rig functionality, I mean things like adding IK, FK, space switches, bendy bones etc. All of these are different things a rigger can add to the rig, which gives you different options to animate in. I don't have a video on my channel, but doodley has a great video explaining the differences between IK and FK. ua-cam.com/video/JnkAlwMjalc/v-deo.htmlsi=mGE4G94MOmPGs_qC The reason we add a buffer is to keep our rigs clean, and clutter free! Rigs can get really complex when you're adding in more of these features, so it's best to keep your deformation chain (the one you skin your mesh to) seperate from controls and other rigging methods. This is also handy for games too, if you're exporting your animation or rig to a game engine.

    • @therealKrak
      @therealKrak 15 днів тому

      @@richstubbsanimation By the way thank you very much for putting in that much effort to explain it to me and I think I finally get the hang of it. So the deform rig has no constraints at all apart from the transform ones. This is maybe a bit far fetched but looking at the deform layer it's like a skeleton and shouldn't move on it's own but the driving layer gets the functionality of the tendons and muscles and therefore makes the bones move, did I get that right? And what do you mean by it is handy for games too? ^^ Can game engines understand Blender's constraints?

  • @MarkWestarp
    @MarkWestarp 16 днів тому

    I think something that would enhance the animated look is going away from straight up only animating 2s and leave out extra frames for fast movements. Like, a fast leg movement will probably be done between a single frame switch with just a smear frame visible. I know smear frames a hard when 3d animating but they are possible and you can get away with a lot of low res boxes used for one frame smear frames. Another thing is idle animation. this isn't applicable here, but animator basically dont animate the characters at all when they're standing still. With 3d animation we tend to and a slight sway to our characters that looks good but is really taking away from the drawn look. Complete freeze frames feel wrong to do but add so much authenticity in my opinion. Of course if you're going for a hybrid look this is all irrelevent, I just want to give some tips for getting more hand drawn animation accuracy :)

    Their is actually a really easy way to rig characters like this but it is kind of hard to explain. You can select parts,in edit mode using L then if you select vertices on the left hand side under the transforms menu you will see how much each bone is affecting the mesh. Their is a green triangle icon if you click that you can easily set the mesh to the correct bones.
