Wild Camping in the Peak District.
I hope that the videos are interesting to people who love the Peak District, and especially for those who are thinking of trying responsible (LNT) wild camping for the first time, which I encourage.
My editing skills aren't the best and I don't use a drone or owt like that. The videos are very basic and I try to be myself and come across as being down to earth and honest, so be forewarned if this approach doesn't appeal to you. However, if you're fine with this style, then thanks very much for watching.👍
So join me on my adventures, as I 'boldly go' where several people have gone before, and remember, leave no trace! 🙂

I've also added a dedicated Hengist's Wild Camps Facebook page to the channel, for posting upcoming plans & related stuff.

The Stunning Views of the Peak District
Another foggy camp in The Peak District.👍🙂
I noticed, after uploading, that I called my OEX sleeping pad 'Luft' for some reason? It's actually called 'Flux'. Apologies for that.

Peak District - A Foggy Atmospheric Camp

With my rucksack packed, once again, I jumped in the car and headed for the glorious Peak District. Joining me on this camp was an old mate of mine. We started the hike from Glossop and made our way up towards Moss Castle where we joined the Pennine Way footpath which goes across Featherbed Top which we then followed in the direction of Mill Hill. Once we'd arrived at Mill Hill, we then made ou...

From the carpark, we made our way into Edale village, where we proceeded directly to the Nag's Head pub for a couple of pints. After leaving the pub, we made our way up the Nab and over to Jaggers Clough where we filled up ...

Joining me on this camp were Kev Green, Jannu (@k9wildcamping104) and Michael Springthorpe (@airlessmean). Peak District - Return to Derwent Edge

On my last camp the subject of Derwent Edge cropped up and it dawned upon me that I hadn't camped up there this year. So with the weather looing favourable, I decided to rectify the situation. Joining me on this camp was Michael from @airlessmean. Together we made our way up the hill and on towards our campsite for the evening. We choose an excellent spot with nice wind shelter, great views and...
Peak District - The Rushcart Thump Morris Men Dance - No Camping Involved

I don't expect to get a lot of views with this video (there's no camping & it's long), but that's not why I make them. Capturing old traditions on film is more important to me than views. Here's something a little different... With my Dad, I headed over to Saddleworth and the Cross Keys pub for the Rushcart Thump annual Morris Men dance. I mainly filmed the dancing in this video and I didn't do...
Peak District - A Windy Camp next to a Stone Circle

With a slight break in the weather, I packed my bag and headed over to the Peak District. Although the weather was forecast for showers, there were also going to be wind gusts which exceeded 40mph during the night. With these winds in mind, I thought to myself, 'What a good opportunity to test my new winter tent before winter', so I brought along my Alpkit Tetri tent for a bit of a test night. ...

I've had my eye on a new winter tent for quite a while, however, I've been patiently waiting for a summer sale before purchasing. Well the sale happened and I bought the tent. A refreshing video, uou dont waffle. Look forward to watching more. The calories in the pastry will give you warmth
It’s still your birthday Steve so happy birthday again. 🎂
👍 EE by gum that were a great video
Was on edale on Wednesday doing a wild camp myself on grindsbrook clough bit of a hike from the path but the sun rise well worth the strained ankle.
I’m off to the woolpacks tomorrow for a camp ⛺️ Another great watch that Steve thanks mate
Thats exactly where me and Benny camped when we were at Woolpacks last time Steve, great site. Smashing video!
I just really enjoy watching your videos Steve I’m really looking forward to going up in the Peak District with my Lurcher dog and getting away from it all. Can’t wait Thanks for being an inspiration You take care Best regards Jeff
that's what I call a three course meal....actually, four three course meals
top vid as per
Enjoyed Watching this vid Steve... Little wind up kinder is always a good thing. Can sleep easily. Shame about the fog though. 👍
Another great camp hengeist you make me smile with mcewans champion , I was up there myself a week ago like pea soup all night ,great to watch your camps Neil
ANOTHER great video Steve shame u didn’t chat with Andy on video was he camera shy lol
Even a misty one is better than no camp hey Steve 😉Great to bump into you 2 again 👍👍👍Thanks for taking us along.
I love chilling out in an evening, beer in hand watching calm relaxing wildcamping videos without any drama's 😊 nice relaxing camp again Steve 👍🏻
Kev's so right about shirt's with eh! buy gum that's good beer 🍺 on m8 I would be the 1st one to buy one 😂 brilliant video again steve 👍
You had me at four Ginsters Bakes, mate. One for each beer 🍺 😀. I enjoyed watching, sometimes it nice to see the rock formations barely visible through the mist. Cheers my dear 👍
Excellent! So atmospheric! I haven't camped around the Woolpacks for years and years. I need to get back there again. You have given me a nudge. Cheers, Warren :)
Nice one Hengist another bloody good evenings viewing
Great camp Steve , very atmospheric 👍
Never thought of wildcamping around there because it can get busy. Your tent look great. Very roomy but no guy lines. How does it cope in strong wind.
Cheers David. Me and Hardy literally stumbled upon that place and decided to camp there. There was evidence of past people who don't leave no trace having camped there, as there was old fire pits present. I can remember commenting to Hardy, that there was line of sight to farms on top of the surrounding hills and that lighting fires would be easily visible. As for the Tarpstar, it's incredible in gusts (pyramid tents have this reputation and it's true with the Tarpstar). I've had it out in 50mph gusts, and Hardy has had it out in 60mph gusts and it's rock solid. The only issue is that it's not really suitable for sub-zero camping due to the inner mesh i.e. Not being solid fabric. The wind blowing under the bottom of the tent can feel a bit icy in those conditions, although the shape of the tent is perfect for shedding snow. Thanks for watching mate and for taking the time to post a comment, I appreciate both.👍🙂
If the flux 7 is like my flux 5, the carry bag has a folding section in the bag which doubles the volume. Didn't see you inflate the bag so i can't comment on what you did. glad you found it comfortable. I may invest in one next year.
Cheers Cooper. From what you've mentioned the supplied pump sack sounds identical with regard to the folding section of the sack. I just found it a bit naff/small when compared to other pump sacks that I've used in the past with other pads. It reminded me of pissing through a gnats chuff (not that I've ever experienced that), so I ended up just blowing it up with my mouth to save time. Despite the pump sack issue, I still think that the pad is excellent when it comes to warmth & comfort, especially when you consider how much it costs, i.e. Who cares if blowing it up by mouth creates mould after 5 years? As long as it's on the inside I don't care, and if I did, for the price it costs, if it bothered me then I'd just buy a replacement.🙂 Thanks for watching mate and for taking the time to comment, I appreciate both.👍
yea the microphone next time it does it just hit the record button on the mic and then sync it up loater in post :) i know maybe annoying
Cheers for the advice Michael, and thanks for watching mate.👍
Good watch as ever mate. Any plans for you camping in the lakes or snowdonia soon? The views from on top are on another level
Cheers mate. I have camped in the Lakes & Wales in the past, but I don't have any current plans to do so at the moment, but also, I wouldn't rule it out. As you've mentioned those places have some stunning views. I tend to do all my camps in the Peak District. This is because besides from loving the place, especially the dark peak area, it's practically on my doorstep. I honestly never get bored of the place.🙂 Thanks for watching and for the comment, both are appreciated.👍
@Hengists_Wild_Camps if you do gonup there, I recommend the Kentmere round. Park in Kentmere, pick up the garburn road , follow the ridge up and camp on high street then back down the other side of ridge the next day, think it ticks off about 9 wainwrights
Cracking video pal, genuinely nice bloke 👍🏽 can I ask, are you pairing your mic 2 to an iPhone ? If so, are you using Blackmagic by any chance? Thanks again and keep creating pal 👍🏽
Cheers Jermaine for that nice comment.🙂 I'm pairing the Mic 2 with the DJI OSMO 4 Action Camera. However, as in the video, it sometimes looses its Bluetooth link with the camera and will refuse to pair again, only for the connection to sync again 10 mins later. Luckily, this doesn't happen too often.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
@ awesome pal thank you, and thanks for taking the time out to actually reply…many don’t. Keep it up 👍🏽
cracking video as always , that breakfast looked really nice , im going to have a look at that sleeping pad , looks decent
Cheers Stuart, the full English certainly hit the spot.🙂 Up until getting that pad, the lowest insulated priced pad that I'd seen was the Lighttour pad for around £100 quid. This Flux 7R pad for £65 quid is incredible value. As well as it being really warm, I also found it to be very comfortable and I had a cracking sleep on it. Thanks for watching mate.👍
Perfect Kinder Scout conditions there Steve. 🤣 Really enjoyed that video mate. I've not camped there. Another one to add to the list.
Cheers Mark. Although that spot doesn't have the panoramic views of the edge, it's still a nice spot looking at the Gates. It's also a bit more secluded and with a plentiful water supply on hand 🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍😊
Cracking vid steve.. Good to see you demolish the breakfast mate!! P
Cheers mate. That grub was a great way to end the trip, it definitely filled me up.🙂 Thanks for watching.👍
Nice one, Steve, I love the fact that regardless of weather you still get out for a camp. I haven't felt inclined with the recent constant cloud and clag, I need views! When did you do this camp? If I had known you were in Glossop I would have like to have met up for a pint, maybe next time. Pico Lounge does do consistently good food, I'm not surprised you really enjoyed your breakfast there :😋
Cheers Bri. That camp in the video was last Saturday. Then I went back up Kinder last Wednesday for another camp and the conditions were exactly the same, lol.🙂 I was glad to film the results of your dry stone walling. It's still standing strong. Thanks for watching mate.👍
Another great video . I do love that spot on Kinder River, the only downside being no views but like you said didn't matter that day 😂. 👍🥾🎒🏕
Cheers Maxine. It's a great spot for seclusion, and it's also handy for grabbing some water, lol 🙂 Thanks for watching.👍
What i meant to say...nice foggy camp Steve. Lots of people got the Vern 1. It looks bomb proof. Nice mod your mate did. I really must get my act into gear and go visit Kinder Gates for an overnighter. Loved the video as always mucker 👍
Thanks Paul. Yes that trekking pole hack that my mate uses, really strengthens the tent. It ain't going anywhere when it's setup like that.👍 Thanks for watching mate.🙂
A nice foggy camp St
Cheers Paul.👍🙂
I don't get the echo and the bunnymen comment?

@@Hengists_Wild_Camps You see I could have asked Google, but "Ask Hengist" is way cooler! 🙂
Absolutely top bloke, top camp, top pub breakfast 🏕️😊👍
Cheers Dave. Those words coming from someone who I totally respect and hold in high esteem means a lot to me.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
Its been pretty grim mate hasnt it? Good to see you are still getting out (are you ever not out?), and loving the tweaks to your kit. Ive often admired that waist bag (ooo matron!) and think I may dig out one of mine to give it a go to store my electricals and vid equipment which always cause a bit of a conundrum as they need to be readily accessed both when Im out but also when Im at home and need to check everything is charged. Brill!
Cheers Phil. That waist pouch is really handy for electricals, especially when pulling the camera out to film stuff. Although it's not an issue for the camera, with it being waterproof, my phone isn't, and subsequently, I wish that I'd bought a waterproof waist pouch, as I have to put my phone in a zip lock bag lol.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
@@Hengists_Wild_Camps Youve started a quest, Ive honestly had five delivered by Amazon already, four are going back!
This truly captures the authentic Peak District vibe Steve! I’ve had the OEX Flux 7R mat sitting around for almost two months now and still haven’t taken it outside. Watching this has finally given me the nudge to get out there and try it out, along with my OEX Leviathan EV 900 sleeping bag. I do wonder if I’ll end up too warm, though-feels like it’s still pretty mild out there! What do you reckon?
Cheers mate.🙂 I took my Leviathan EV 900 out a couple of weeks back in similar temperatures, and used my ExPed R-5.2 mat with it. I ended up just in a T-shirt and boxers with the top part of the bag unzipped and thrown back, I was that warm. I imagine it being even warmer when using the OEX R-7.2 mat. On this trip I used my -3'C bag and also ended up stripped down again for sleeping due to the heat. Thanks for watching mate.👍
@ 😂 Sounds toasty! The Leviathan EV 900 sounds like a real beast in the cold. Combining it with the OEX Flux 7R might just turn the whole setup into a mobile sauna! I’ll go and check out your previous video 👍🏻
Great camp Steve, watched whilst eating a takeaway cheers 🍺. What do you think of the Alpkit, now you have done a few camps in it? Do you prefer it over the Vango for build quality? Your breakfast looked amazing btw. Take care.
Cheers John. I really like the Tetri apart from the weight, lol. However for a 2 person sturdy tent, I don't think that the weight is too bad. I've also had some of my best camping sleeps in it. I'm inclined to believe that on a subconscious level, my brain relaxes knowing that the tent isn't going to get blown down.🙂 As far as comparing Alpkit's build quality to Vango's, I'd say that they were on par with each other. Thanks for watching mate.👍
Great film sir 😊. Vern tent looks solid, do like the cup of yours. It's bit like half a bucket old chap😆🫡🇬🇧
Thanks Fraser. When I watch other people's camping videos, I can never understand why they use such small cups. It doesn't seem worth the effort.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
Awesome
Thanks for watching mate.👍🙂
Good camp Steve I wa close to there on bonfire nite 5th just past kinder downfall. was hoping to see some fireworks myself & had the same, could hear them but couldn't hear them.
Cheers Moz. The visibility always seems to be like that around bonfire time. If it isn't natural conditions then it's smoke in the air.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
Nice looking camp Steve sometimes is not always about the views but the taking part and getting out there and getting a great sleep under the stars
Thanks Vaughan. You're spot on with that comment mate.🙂 Cheers for watching.👍
@ nice to see u in my home county
Evening Reddy 👍 Pale ale & a breakfast 😂
The breakfast of Kings John.🤣
nice and claggy up the peak district steve just like everytime i go hiking up there 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers Steven. It does make everything seem different when it's like that. Thanks for watching mate.👍
Quality view's on top of the plateau 😂 nevermind steve as long as you both had a good time that's the main thing beer's and a few chuckles. I do like the look of your alpkit tetri tent but I was looking at the alpkit viso 2 tent never had a tunnel tent before what's your thoughts on tunnel tents? And last but not least I can't believe you swapped the black pudding for another sausage😂 have a good one my friend great video 👍
Thanks Peter. I've never owned a 2 hoop tunnel tent, so I can't really comment. My only concern would be if the wind changed direction and hit the tent side on, then that tunnel part could be a weak spot? Dunno really mate?🙂
@Hengists_Wild_Camps Fair comment my friend can't wait for nxt video 👌 👍
Nice atmospheric camp that Steve 👌🏻 I like the look of that Vern tent, the pole geometry is the same as my old Vango Chinook 200, very sturdy design.
Cheers Wolfie. Yes the Vern is a nice tent, and with that trekking pole hack that my mate used, it's rock solid.👍
Oh yes another great evenings viewing with Hengis wild camp.
Thanks Les.👍
Nice video 👍🙂
Thanks mate, and thanks for the comment.👍
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 🙂👍
Hi, are you still using the Wolfgang camera. Need an action camera but don't want to pay loads. Or do you have any other recommendations? ATB Mark.
Hi mate. Yes I'm still using the camera. I use it often for timelapses. This WOLFANG camera was designed as an entry level camera with everything built in. It's far better than the last budget camera which I bought, especially the audio quality. It isn't as good as something like a DJI 4 (pic/audio quality or image stabilisation), but it does the job. Also, unlike the previous budget action camera which I had, this one is waterproof without the need of a case. I believe that WOLFANG do another camera model which is one more level above this one and is their flagship camera. It's a few quid more (not too much) and that one may be worth taking a look at.
@17.55😮😊
🙂
Steve. You talked to Dave about going up an over some rocks . I do remember as a youngster. Ahem. Watching early 90's athletics and russia had a female pole jumper... She was called Anatolia up'n'ovA.. Sure I'm not kidding 😊😊
Lol Fraser, what an ace name.🙂 Thanks for watching mate.👍
