@ACORNHILL ROSE PRUNING 2023: THE EASIEST ROSE PRUNING TUTORIAL TIPS FOR SPRING 2023
@ACORNHILL ROSE PRUNING 2023: THE EASIEST ROSE PRUNING TUTORIAL TIPS FOR SPRING 2023
These general tips for rose pruning will help you improve the health and lifespan of any rose.
WHEN TO PRUNE ROSES?
Late winter (February or March) is often a good time for pruning roses but see the individual rose profiles above for more specific timing.
How to prune roses: general tips
When tackling roses bear the following in mind;
* Cuts should be no more than 5mm (¼ in) above a bud and should slope downwards away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud. This applies to all cuts, whether removing dead wood, deadheading or annual pruning
* Cut to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open-centred shape. With roses of spreading habit, prune some stems to inward-facing buds to encourage more upright growth
* Cut to the appropriate height, if a dormant bud is not visible
* Cuts must be clean, so keep your secateurs sharp. For larger stems, use loppers or a pruning saw
* Prune dieback to healthy white pith
* Cut out dead and diseased stems and spindly and crossing stems
* Aim for well-spaced stems that allow free air flow
* On established roses, cut out poorly flowering old wood and saw away old stubs that have failed to produce new shoots
* With the exception of climbing roses and shrub roses, prune all newly planted roses hard to encourage vigorous shoots
* Trace suckers back to the roots from which they grow and pull them away
These tips should be read in conjunction with the appropriate rose pruning profile.
Shrub or bush type
Very small roses are easy to recognise so follow our guide for patio and miniature roses. Larger roses might be any number of types, from hybrid tea and floribunda to species and shrub roses. If in doubt;
* Take out one or two stems as close to ground level as you can or to younger looking (green barked) side stems low down
* Shorten remaining stems by between a third and a half
* If the response the next season is lots of vigorous regrowth that flowers well, chances are it is a floribunda or hybrid tea
* Otherwise, it is more likely to be a type of shrub rose
Feed all pruned roses with a general purpose or rose fertiliser in spring. Mulch with garden compost or manure.

      Do you have seeds or you want to propagate through cuttings. Now is the time to prepare plants for next year. You can take cuttings and propagate as much for the remainder of the growing season. They’ll take root and bloom next year. Hope this helps!

    You are supposed to prune to a bud union. You are pruning them midway between the buds. You are creating what horticulturists call "Dead Wood". Consider pruning to a bud union or to a leaf and do it at an angle to allow for water run-off. Great video.

    Hi again, thanks for referring me from the other parol video. This certainly looks precision sharp and doable (aka foldable ;) If one uses 6 x 6, does that create a 6” from tip to tip ornament? What suggestions can you offer to ‘holiday” it up for an ornament to hang on the tree ? It’s my hope to offer as gifts for the holiday for ones holiday tree. Thanks for pointing me to this video and any suggestions to bling, glitz and/or holiday it :):)

    No propagation box or perlite needed if you just air layer. Just take a lower branch leaving it attached to the mother plant and strip a couple leaves and bury that portion of the stem with a couple inches of the existing soil. No supplies needed. Let Mother Nature do the rest… I do this with all my garden shrubs…rhododendrons, blueberry bushes, rose bushes…. You will notice new growth on the plant and that is when you cut it from the mother plant and dig up.

      Alocasias and colocasias need good light to grow. If you have a covered stop or deck, they’ll be great locations for them. And having warmth certainly helps too. I’d grow them indoors when the shops are offering good unplanted bulbs. Costco, home depot and the like usually offer them early spring.

Im planning on putting them in a garage refrigerator for about 10-12 weeks then use this method with water/stone/glass container INDOORS at my dining room window, which is large...so i get a lot of natural light. Im sure it will take a week to get most of these bulbs(so beginning of Feb), but i have 20 coming tomorrow. Am I okay on timing if I get these bulbs growing indoors after the 2-3 month cooling period? In April/May....Thats tulip season right? Im a newbie!! 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷

    My apples and pear espalier are in their first spring/summer after planting them in late winter. I have been training two horizontal first tiers as they grow and leaving a central leader. The first tier is growing well. Its now mid summer. I have some branch growth coming off the two trained laterals and some off the central leader. Should I be summer pruning in the first year on my first tier laterals? Is mid summer too late for that? I have one pear which has produced a few laterals off the central leader at a tier two height. Should I train those now or is it best to cut the central leader back in winter to start the next tier from fresh? Thanks

    • @ACORNHILL
      @ACORNHILL 7 місяців тому

      Summer pruning on the first year? I say hold off and let them acclimate, root down. Wait until late winter of the following year. Then you can start the cycle of pruning: late winter pruning to PROMOTE GROWTH; summer pruning to INHIBIT MORE GROWTH. About your pear tree. I would determine which two laterals you’d like. Train them laterally at your preferred length. Make sure you always leave about a foot length at the end and let it grow vertically. As they continue to produce growth, tie them laterally up to your desired length. Once you achieve that length, you can then prune the tip. Hope this made sense. Good growing and pruning !! 😀🙋🏻‍♂️

      Hello there. As these are indoor plants. I suggest being very in-tune with the plants. Some of them do need frequent watering. The ubiquitous finger in the soil method holds true for most of them. I water frequently during the growing months and hold back on the watering during winter when some of them hibernate. 😃. Hope this helps. What kind of plants do you keep indoors?

    I was very successful rooting new fog trees from cuttings. Easy plant to propagate. Great video!

      Another plant that I am very fond of propagating in the early growing season as well! 😃

    Great presentation! Straight to the point. So glad you mentioned ginger and iris being rhizomes, too. Have you ever propagated a new rabbits foot fern from a section of the rhizome that has a frond?

    Thanks for your video. Very informative! Question: How big of a hole did you drill in the container?

    Those 3 will need a pot at least 2 feet across…they are huge plants. And be patient, they may take a year or two to flower as the bulb needs to establish & grow a bit to flower

    I've got these around my pool lanai in Tampa-St. Pete. These are EASY to grow and fill up a lot of space in corners, to create my tropical look! Thank you for the video!

    So an idea to consider when planting trees. Instead of staking, I prefer to set a couple heavy rocks on top of rootball after planting. This allows for the tree to sway naturally in the wind so it produces a thicker trunk. Obviously in espalier situation the tying will support tree. Thanks for sharing. It’s a cool space you created

      Your suggestion just came at the right time! Am about to plant a couple more apple trees. Your suggestion will be useful in my next planting application! 😄
