Video #52 "Starwhite" - When your decks are awash...
Deck drains also known as scuppers are intended to drain water from the boat's decks. Rain and boarding seas can make the decks slippery so clearing them efficiently is always a good idea. Our scuppers originally had teak slats that were not removable making cleaning the drains very difficult. We've installed a simple cover that works great!

Video #51 "Starwhite" THIS WON'T SINK US! Fixing little annoyances
Переглядів 5714 місяці тому
Boats require maintenance, sometimes it's a priority item to keep the boat from sinking!! (Aka :Buoyance Challenged)! Other times it's a simple annoyance that can be put off till "later". It's always satisfying to cross a maintenance item off the work list! Deck leaks, the shore power plug and an engine that's hard to stop likely won't sink us! But it's satisfying to get them fixed...
Video #50 Najad 390 NEW Folding Wheel
Переглядів 6475 місяців тому
The wheel in our cockpit takes up a lot of space when we are at anchor or in port. This Folding Wheel looks like it will make moving around in the cockpit much easier! We've got a few issues with our freshwater system that need to be sorted. There is always something that needs to be addressed on a boat.
Video #49 "Starwhite" - Dragging Anchor, the Romance of Chain
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 місяців тому
Dragging Anchor is never an enjoyable experience! Most of the time it is avoidable if, you're anchoring with enough chain as part of your anchor rode. You need to have enough scope to keep the anchor pulling horizontally on the bottom, chain is usually the best answer.
Video #48 SOLAR PANELS - Here comes the SUN !! Our Solar Installation

Solar panels are a great way to keep your boats battery bank topped up. We've installed a basic solar system on "Starwhite" that keeps are batteries topped up and supplies all our normal electrical needs.
Video #47 - Sorting "Albatross" - NAJAD 390
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
Now that we have taken possession of Albatross it's time to sort out her systems and make the changes necessary to meet our needs. We will be sorting her electrical systems, adding lighting below decks, opening up the cockpit by replacing her wheel and addressing the fresh water system onboard. These are our priority projects, there are lots of other things to be addressed in the future.
OMG !!! WHAT HAVE WE DONE !!! Video #46
Переглядів 13 тис.Рік тому
What have we done? Is this a mistake or a smart decision... We've bought the Najad 390 I looked at in the Canary Islands last Spring. Overall, the boat is in excellent condition and well equipped for ocean passages. There are some maintenance items to be done and some improvements we'd like to make. We think having a boat in a warm sunny area will give us a place to escape from the dark, dreary...

A new boat for us, Najad 390 Maybe...? Video #43 - "Starwhite"
Переглядів 4,1 тис.Рік тому
We've been tempted by other boats in the past, but disappointed with what we found when we got to them. Another boat has tempted us, she's faraway and I hope she will be worth the travel and time. Is this the boat that finally temps us away from Starwhite...?
Wider Companionway Steps & checking out another Boat - Video #42
Переглядів 603Рік тому
We replaced the original ladder with alternating steps that are attached to the engine room door. They have served us well, but we have often felt that it would be nice if the steps were wider so we could put two feet on each step. We've considered other boats in the past, but have not found the right one...until maybe now!

BETA Engine Zinc LEAKS! - Video #39 - Westsail 28 - "Starwhite"

The new engine cooling zinc I installed is leaking and dripping water onto the aft motor mount. It appears the plug that holds the zinc is not seating completely into its threaded fitting. I've come up with 2 different solutions to this problem.
ZINCs in our BETA engine! - Video #38 - Westsail 28 - "Starwhite"

BETA's freshwater cooled diesel engines have a small zinc anode to protect the heat exchanger manifold from corrosion. Regularly checking the anode and replacing it as needed is part of a basic engine maintenance program. Replacing the anode takes only minutes and costs very little, replacing a heat exchanger is expensive.

NO FUNCTIONING Instruments ! Putting a hole in the boat... - Video #23 - Westsail 28 - "Starwhite"
I have the exact same boat hull #55 and have just had the same problem
Did you find the crack before it broke and filled the engine room with black soot?
@ actually yes I noticed it when I was checking sea strainer the engine was not running when it happend so no black smoke and no water in bilge (I have a drip less)
Thank you for this. perfect information as im about to make the same on my "new" (1977 Hartley Tahitian). I notice the wonderful non slip deck you have. it looks amazing. Have you done it yourself? Do you have any idea how to make it or where i can find information about this? (im rebuilding the whole superstructure and need new non slip). Love your videos!
Maybe use a threaded insert? I think free range sailing had a good rundown of them?
Yes, I have been thinking the threaded insert is my better bet. I have found some made of brass that look like they will work nicely.
I like the magnet idea but could crest rust stain. An elongated teak wedge on each side would be my choice to keep the covers snug.
Magnets would be a good solution for your scupper covers. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a good idea, I'll have to check that out! Thank you!
Thank you for the video. It's always interesting to see the different ways these boats are set up.
There are so many different ways to configure a boat!
I've noticed in some of your other videos, your scuppers are not the same as on my W28. Can you please explain what you did. Maybe even a video on it. Thanks for the great content.
Hi, Thanks for the question. I'm constantly surprised by the details people notice and comment on related to Starwhite. I think you are asking about the deck drain scuppers. Yes, there are several different ways they have been addressed on Westsails. I will take your suggestion and make a video of what we have done. Could you possibly send me a photo of how your scuppers are done?
@@Westsail28 I have some pictures. How do I send them to you?

Useful. Thanks.
Glad you think so!
Definitely improved. Nice cushions too.
Excellent little getaway. The window trick is great and still lets some light in. Haha..
Binge sailing along with you Captain...ahoy.
All positives...no negatives. Nice satisfying USB install.
That boat looks good at any angle. How do you handle having no back support in the cockpit? Does it bug you? Sailing seat?
So nice and relaxing, solo sails are the best.
Keepin' her TIDY! Great job Captain.
Enjoyed that info walk thru, terrific boat. I've only seen the Westsail 32, not the 28.
Coming down in wavy seas really need grab rales, smaller kids would also find this difficult. Love the beta.
Where does one source the fiberglass ceiling panels?
Home Depot , these are used for wall coverings in kitchens and bathrooms. Sold in 4’x8’ sheets..
You should do audiobooks reading, you will be verry rich. Perfect voice. My puls drops dangerous low when i watch/listen to your sailing videos.
Not sailing the Najad ?
We are aboard the Najad at the moment.
Thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
I loke your installation. I own a Union Polaris 36 (no windlass) and it also has a bowsprit in the way! I have looked at many elecric windlasses and all have their mounting issues, not least the need to drill holes in the bowsprit for the cabling. I have looked at the Seatiger555 and it is a contender. I am having trouble at finding the max height of the Seatiger555 as I have a staysail boom hovering over the possible installation. Do you have the figure for the overall height? Thanks.
Yes, it's 10.25" tall at the aft end which is the highest point.
@@Westsail28 On my Union 36, (11 tons laden, 36 ft across deck, 42 ft overall) the bowsprit is wider so I will have to make a wider plate to span the bowsprit and so bolt that plate to the deck via those long bolts. I plan to use my old 35 lb CQR and perhaps 175 ft of new 10 mm calibrated chain. What chain are you using and how long? Is that a 35 lb CQR you have? Thanks.
We have 160' of 5/16" G4 chain backed with 30' of 9/16" 3 strand line, it is attached to a 35# Delta anchor.
Beautiful Westsail! Love the table idea.
Thanks for the complement!
First 20 seconds of the video about putting things off 'til later, and it shows 2022 registration haha. Love these videos
When I was putting this video together, I wanted to include a short sailing section in the introduction. I found that old footage and decided to use it, thinking no one was likely to notice the registration stickers! Nice catch detective !!! Glad you like the videos!
I'm amazed at how large the engine compartment is on these things, rather than a tiny, congested cabinet as is common on a lot of boats.
Having all that room does make working on the engine much easier.
Hi Kevin! Vic Smith here! We worked together way back when in the old Yachfitters days. I just stumbled on your channel and have subscribed. Skookum work you've done on Starwhite! I own an O'Day 35 which I sail out of Semiahmoo. I'll be watching your videos with great interest! Cheers!
HI Vic, Great to hear from you!
I noticed your nice clean decks. Did you redo them? If so what material did you use? The decks on my boat look similar but have started cracking in places due to the extreme heat down here in Mexico. Long time subscriber and really appreciate your content.
The original gelcoat on some of the nonskid areas was wearing thru so I carefully taped off all the nonskid areas and painted them with Interlux paint. It was a very time consuming job and unfortunately, I did not have a camera at the time to film any of it. The end result was/is very good and I do get lots of comments/complements on the appearance.
FWIW to your viewers: Many of us 'old' boat owners have experienced the same problem with the push buttons associated with our engines. According to the 'old salts' I've talked to, the cause may be the switch, as in your situation. For others, it seems that the original wiring from the switch to the starter solenoid was made with a sub-standard gauge or quality wire. Thanks for the episode!
Do you use the afr hawspipe? I’m wondering how you deploy now and stern, as I’m trying to work a plan for my B40. Thanks!
We use the bow and stern hawsepipes for leads to our mooring cleats. "Starwhite" has raised bulwarks with mooring cleats mounted on the inboard sides of the bulwarks.
Hey, what happened to that other boat you bought?
Albatross the Najad 390 we bought is securely moored in Europe. We will be aboard her again in a few weeks.
That is a BEAUTIFUL, take-you-anywhere vessel. Congratulations (and I'm very jealous)
Thank you for the complement!
As owners of an other Najad 390 we also have big steeringwheel thats annoying to get past. We considered the folding wheel but in the end doubted if it would make enough of a difference. So I'd be happy to hear your experiences in real live with the folding wheel. We also have a watertank meter that's not working. I haven't gotten arround to opening the floor yet, but will do so soon. Happy to know where to look for it 🙂Since we most probably have the same model I'd like to ask you where you ordered your replacement. I hope you enjoy the boat as much as we do. We simply love her.
Hi thanks for watching the video and congratulations on your 390! The folding wheel has made a HUGE difference in our ability to move around in the cockpit when we are not underway. It also makes entertaining a group much more comfortable and eliminates the isolation of those seated behind the steering pedestal. It has of course made no difference when it is unfolded and in use! I found the watertank sender thru Fisheries Supply here in Seattle, it was a special order item. I am told any VDO dealer can order it, I used the part number that was stamped into the top of the unit.
Always enjoy your low key approach and great information. Your boat is a beauty. Thanks for sharing.
That is a great boat, does this mean you have a boat for sale?
For now we have a fleet. We sail Starwhite locally and keep Albatross moored in the Canary Islands.
Ahoy from Indianola. I used to love sailing, now I am happy to watch you tube. Love your boat
Thanks for watching!
Such a wonderful boat, impressive and useful. So clean, do you sail it
Yes I do!
With regard to the instrument gauge your going to move from the rear cabin, couldn’t you instead leave it there and buy another gauge to put at the nav station that will plug in to the existing loom, then you can check what’s going on when underway while resting
Yes, that would be possible and might be simpler. The repeater gives only speed, depth and distance. It's really not of much value in the aft stateroom. But we do enter those numbers in our log at the nav station several times a day.
I´m watching your channel since its beginning. Even though I´m a bit dissapointed that you didn´t upgrade to a Westsail 32, I´m very very grateful to find your peaceful content during the hours ahead of the Trump/Biden debate:) Anyways... your quality content is always nice to watch and especially your soothing voice is great. The Najad choice of yours is very understandable for me though, becaus she really is roomy and slick loocking at the same time, combined with a very high built quality. BR from Germany, Tobias PS: What was your job before you retired? Everything you do is so thoroughly thought through and made in such a quality manner, I wonder why that is:)
Thank you for the kind comments. Our Westsail 28 "Starwhite" is still a big part of our lives. We are currently home sailing her on the Salish Sea. The Najad is moored in the Schengen area so our time aboard is limited by those regulations. We purchased the Najad as we wanted a boat with 2 staterooms that we could keep in a warmer climate. Winters in Seattle are normally grey, wet and cold so it's nice to get away... We considered the Westsail 43 & 42, but their overall length made handling and moorage a challenge. I have worked in several different aspects of the recreational marine industry for the past 45 years.
Very informative about chain, gypsies and anchor rope - learned something new, thank you 😀
When you can't get an anchor to hold, attach your spare anchor and chain rode in front of it so you have 2 picks in line with a chain rode between them.
Back when I learned how to anchor the rule was 7:1 scope for a rope chain rode with one boat length of chain and 4:1 scope for all chain rode. Different anchors work best in different bottoms. The Danforth is the anchor of choice for anchoring in soft mud. Plow type anchors )CQR, Delta, etc are good in and and harder mud and will alo work on a rocky bottom. Do remember that scope is determined at high tide in tidal waters. I had a delta anchor on my vintage wooden powerboat because it was self launching and set well in our local bottoms. On my Allied Princess 36 I use a Danforth Plow which is the Danforth version of the CQR. I also have a Danforth 20H as my backup anchor. I also use an effectively all chain rode (250' of 3/8" G4 chain, but I do have 250 feet of 5/8" three strand spliced onto the end of the chain. I think you should also have mentioned anchor snubbers since they are essential with an all chain rode. Just another old sailor. I am from Washington, bt now sail in Maine. I used to sail Puget Sound and the San Juans. I will check out your videos to see where you do most of your sailing.
“Swear by it or swear at it”👍
Top notch content! Thanks.
Excellent Video, thanks for doing the research👍
That was very in formative there were things i didnt know many thanks for sharing that infomation ,cheers.
Do you happen to have a wiring diagram for your setup? I am currently working on rewiring age old electrical work myself on a Westsail 32. I have the AC and DC mostly figured out, but I am trying to sort out how you wired the charger into this system. I like the idea of the AC source installed right by the charger. I'm asking because it seems your batteries were wired one way in another video on the engine compartment (Video #44, 2:12 has the starter wired to the house bank) and here, the starter is wired different @2:32. If the Victron unit comes with an installation diagram, then I can refer to that. Always admiring your restoration work! Thanks!
WOW, you have spent a lot of time studying my videos! I had to watch the videos again myself to see what you had noticed! I think I see what you are asking about. Initially I had wired each battery bank with separate negative (yellow) cables running to the negative main buss on the engine room forward bulkhead. Running separate negative cables was overkill and unnecessary as they were/are both going to the same main negative buss. I later replaced the Engine Bank (#2) negative cable with a much shorter cable simply tying it into the House Bank #2 negative run at the batteries. The long cable I removed is now installed on our other boat. As you are likely finding out Tined Cooper Cable is expensive!! Wiring the Victron or any other 110v battery charger is pretty simple and straight forward. Sorry to say I don't have any wiring diagrams of how I wired the boat. It was a long process over a number of months. Lots of time just sitting on board analyzing where the best wiring runs might be...
@@Westsail28 Thanks for the feedback. I think I can relate to sitting onboard working your way through all the runs. I can see now how you have the house bank and starter setup.
i’ve been wondering what is happening with you and albatross…i hope you’re doing well and we’ll get to see what you’ve done with her…these are really fine yachts, and i know you’ll make her even finer… cheers buddy!
Thank you for inquiring. We have spent a lot of time on Albatross addressing issues and I have started to assemble a couple new videos. The videos take a long time to edit but they are coming along slowly...!
i’ll glad that you are still at it and will get the chance to see what you’ve been doing eventually… she really is a beautifully designed and built yacht….it’s really not easy to have owned a fine traditional yacht that may lack performance in some areas, and find a more modern replacement with the quality…you’ve done it!
What do you feel are the pros and cons of the canoe stern. The stern hung rudder sure lends itself to low cost wind vane options. How is climbing aboard from a dinghy or the water?
We have always owned double ended boats with outboard rudders and tillers. There are as many opinions as sailors about boat design. A double ender presents a better face (Smaller) to large following seas compared to a flat transom. They however have less deck space in the stern/cockpit. They allow for the easy installation of a stern hung outboard rudder. Having a large outboard rudder directly behind the prop makes handling in tight quarters much easier. In calm conditions with little or no current, I can spin the boat 180 degrees within slightly more than her own length using propwash, back and fill. The stern hung outboard rudder can be removed without compromising the boats buoyance and in emergency situations the rudder can be easily maneuvered/secured with lines wrapped around it. I can say from experience that it is easy to look down and see what is caught on an outboard rudder! It is also easier to remove the offending crab pot... We don't normally board from the stern, we usually board from the side. I have seen boats with outboard rudders that have steps attached to the sides of their rudders to facilitate boarding from the stern. In our experience with a windvane installed behind an outboard rudder it is difficult to board from the stern, but I expect others have found ways to do so. When backing into a quay or pontoon one must be cautious to not bang the rudder into either! The boomkin on a Westsail tends to protect the part of the rudder that's above the waterline, but one must also watch the portion under the water.
Did you notice when you first started your engine in port that your normal overboard discharge was reduced flow or not at all? I enjoyed video.Thank you
I NOW check the overboard discharge everytime I start the engine. But at the time of this incident, I did not. I just did not expect such an issue with a new engine. So much for expectations!
@@Westsail28 Do you shut your cooling water in take valve when your in port?
@@redwood1957 Not normally, but I will close it when I'm doing work on the engine.
@@Westsail28 I close it when not sailing. Adds separation from sea water. Pre engine start is woc. Water oil cooling check are all good to go
I think, had there been an option, I would have preferred a Kabota diesel over the Volvo diesel that my Ranger Tug had.
