Higher education can transform individual lives, strengthen our communities, bolster our workforce, address racial and socioeconomic inequities, and ultimately build a more just society. Unfortunately, whole segments of our society have been left behind by our current higher education system. We must take action now to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential. At I...
#HigherEdIsHow: Everyone should have the opportunity
Переглядів 340Рік тому
Higher education should provide an opportunity for a better living and a better life. But that opportunity has not always been available to everyone, and today deep racial and socioeconomic inequities in college access remain. While progress has been made and many policies and practices seek to break down barriers, the data show we still have further to go. The college students of today include...
#HigherEdIsHow: The Importance of Quality Data
Переглядів 293Рік тому
Our system of higher education is data rich, but information poor. Unbeknownst to most people, students and families are missing key information when trying to choose which college to attend and policymakers lack the data necessary to provide insight into a complete picture of higher education outcomes when making decisions about student supports and funding. As but one example, only first-time...
#HigherEdIsHow: Need-Based Aid & Affordability

Higher education has been called the most important door that will ever open. We know that walking through that door can change the life of a student, their family, and their communities. But tuition and the many other costs of college have increased markedly, while financial aid has not kept pace. Unmet financial need closes the door to potential students - especially Black, Latinx and/or Hisp...
#HigherEdIsHow: Degree Completion
Переглядів 317Рік тому
Higher education is a path to a better living and a better life - but only if students are about to complete college and earn a valuable degree or credential. Today, at least 39 million Americans have stopped out with some college credit but no degree. Gaps in completion have continued to widen along racial and economic lines. Students deserve well-supported pathways to earn a valuable degree t...
TransferBOOST: The goals of the Catalyzing Transfer Initiative
Переглядів 1202 роки тому
For every 100 students who enroll in community colleges, 31 students transfer to a four-year institution. Of those, only 14 complete a bachelor’s degree within six years. Too many students are derailed from their higher education goals by unexpected, unaffordable, and untenable-yet solvable-challenges along their transfer journey. Recognizing the need for clear supports and equitable pathways t...
Opening "The Most Important Door ": Rethink Demonstrated Interest
Переглядів 162 роки тому
Demonstrated (or "applicant") interest is broadly defined as the contact students make with a college that signals their preference to enroll if admitted. This includes visiting campus, attending information sessions, participating in interviews, calling admissions offices, reading emails sent from the school, and clicking on links in emails. These policies reinforce inequities baked into insti...
Opening "The Most Important Door ": Rethink Recruitment
Переглядів 232 роки тому
Colleges and universities expend time, money, and effort to recruit a student body. When done equitably, recruitment policies and practices can promote the inclusion of students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. But recruitment practices too often prioritize recruitment of students from wealthy, out-of-state communities, perpetuating privilege for White or affluent students and...

Wow! I wish I would have known about this before I went back to Simpson to get a degree one because I had more than enough units when I left UC Davis! This is so sad because I am now horribly in debt and the degree from Simpson University up here in Redding, did nothing for me, absolutely NOTHING!! All it did was put me in debt, huge debt now because it just keeps growing cuz I can't afford to pay the payments for the exorbitant loan! 😖🫣😮‍💨 Avoid the Simpson aspire program, they do not help you at all. And I hope that this will help some of you, nothing else ask more questions than you even know how to ask! I didn't realize I probably could have pulled two or three degrees when I left UC Davis, but they didn't care. This was in the '80s and they didn't like the idea of a re-entering "mom" rubbing elbows with their ivy League good old boys. Sad... I'm a victim of that good old boy system, several times over, there's no one who can help me I'll just die with his debt. 😤
