    • @pickleballeffect
      @pickleballeffect 2 дні тому

      Just depends what you're looking for. The Prism series are pure control paddles and help you slow the ball down and reduce pop ups in every scenario whereas the Pro series are more all-court style paddles that give you more pop and offense but are also a little more challenging to control when you're getting attacked or are stretched out. If you have a good sense of touch then go with the Pro series for the added offense but if you need help controlling the ball and reducing errors then the Prism series is good route.

    Can I put a reload skin on my Vatic prism and would it be considered USAPA approved?

    • @pickleballeffect
      @pickleballeffect 2 дні тому

      After looking into it in order for a skin to be approved for a paddle the paddle has to be resubmitted to USAP with the skin on as if it's a whole new paddle. So no, that wouldn't work. And in order for Revive to be approved they have to work with the brands to resubmit their paddles with their skins.

    Ignatowich released a vid saying beginners should start with power paddles because control paddles let you get away with too much and build bad habits that have to be unlearned later when you’re forced to transition to power as a high level player. Honestly, I also think lower level players will just win more games in general with power paddles (except PPE because the sweetspot is just so bad). Aggression will get you lots of pts at 3.0-4.5 because people don’t let out balls go and can’t counter well. 4.25+ is when drives transition from outright winners to a means of making the 5th shot easier. And at that point, it’s nice to be used to a power paddle already to have the edge in hand battles and putaways.

    • @NOT_A_TOP_FAN
      @NOT_A_TOP_FAN 3 дні тому

      And I have the opposite take - power paddles provide an artificial experience to your game play, and allow you to not have to build solid swing mechanics…the artificial power will mask deficiencies…so sure, you may win some more games, but the longer you play, the more you don’t build good shot mechanics like if your forced to with a soft, control paddle. And they will eventually be exposed by good players…and then your sitting there like damn, wish I would have just played on a hard paddle to begin with, so it would have forced me to learn from the jump…instead of just pushing it down the road…So it’s really all about perspective and what your long term goals are…

    • @M0stlyHarmless9
      @M0stlyHarmless9 3 дні тому

      @@NOT_A_TOP_FAN I’m conflicted because I see what you’re saying, but I think if you play with a power paddle but intentionally work on the soft game you get the best of both worlds. Switching to a power paddle at 4.5 and realizing you can’t reset and you’re overhitting all your drives and speedups is bad. If you’re careful about your focus, it’s best to play with the paddle you want to play with at a high level

    • @NOT_A_TOP_FAN
      @NOT_A_TOP_FAN 2 дні тому

      @@M0stlyHarmless9 sure I see your point also. But like you said, you have to intentionally want to work on your soft game…and even harder, actually play a soft game. Because as soon as you get that power padfle in your hands, it’s easy to want to rip all day long. I play with a Olympus, and it gives me plenty of power (without me having to baby the paddle) but also allows me to play a soft game.

    • @65atBestPB

      An alternative newbie paddle plan 😜 - every newbie gets a control paddle - the day they quit popping balls up from baseline, transition, and kitchen, they get a little more power - rinse and repeat Game should be renamed “Don’t feed the smash” New paddle choices can’t be this Ignatowich‘s broad brush, and not limited to his suggestion “most power you can control”. We came from tennis, my wife needs a paddle with more power than me because I swing faster. Just like tennis where we matched racquet and string power to “our” swings, the paddle endpoint was similar. She plays good with Vatic Pro Flash 16, and I generate enough pace with Apollo and Prism Flash. Ironically our control was the opposite of what James was suggesting. For her, more control on baseline drive because not having to over swing, and for me control because I don’t have to abbreviate/guide my swing. The other obvious reason you can’t narrow this new paddle choice down is pickleball doubles has this weird thing called the kitchen. My best Ignatowich all I can control from baseline drive might be a terrible fit for me at the kitchen. No such thing as a paddle for me that is both best at kitchen and baseline … tradeoff. Which skill do you want that newbie to master first, or they want to master first? I needed to play tennis on pickleball court with extended paddle first because of “fun” reasons, not fastest improvement. Our 5.0 head pro didn’t even teach strokes … said tennis strokes takes years and they would get good the fastest by getting good at getting to kitchen. I imagine he would say 3rd shot drives and power paddles were generally a bad idea for those that didn’t come from tennis. I don’t think there is one right answer … unfortunately. Most of the time if I give a female a Vatic Pro Flash and a Prism Flash to hit, they prefer the Pro Flash, like not having to swing so hard. With guys, it is often the Prism.

    Braydon I like your positivity on the 3S being more accepted. I wish people with influence in pb community nationally could step up and convince local tournament directors to understand that the 3S was apparently approved under more rigorous standards than the previous USAP approved paddles. It’s just locally and regionally I have asked multiple tournament directors and they have always gone with the rule of only on the list USAP approved paddles for tournaments, leagues, etc… they aren’t seemingly comfortable accepting a new and different paddle approving body or process. so it does matter bc you hate to adjust to and spend $300 on a 3S paddle that you can only use some of the time.

    • @pickleballeffect
      @pickleballeffect 2 дні тому

      Yeah, I hope people will educate themselves a bit more on the topic because the 3S paddles aren't bad for the game and what UPA-A is doing isn't hurting the game either, if anything they are slowing things down. Whether what they are doing is a money grab or not, the paddles they approve should be allowed in all tournaments and clubs.

    • @65atBestPB
      @65atBestPB День тому

      @@pickleballeffect You can educate me first. 😉 If it is a money grab and limits smaller companies and innovation, isn’t that the definition of bad for the game, and possibly illegal? Where has the paddle innovation come from the last two years … $300 paddle companies and PPA, or many companies that would not have existed with $100,000 pay to play? I think you could make the case NEITHER USAPA or $big$ pickle has been good for the average rec player. The vast majority of rec players will never DUPR, play a tournament or watch PPA. But … most of those millions of players would benefit from better tech (paddles, balls, etc), more courts (dedicated), less expensive indoor memberships. USAPA and $big pickle both have a vested interest in limiting paddle companies and innovation, but for different reasons. USAPA has a massive task if thousands of companies, and that is true even if USAPA is slow and backwards thinking which limits innovation or not. And they were slow … just pick a mph and rpm limit and police it, and get out of the way for the “how”. If $big$ pickle can limit the $club to current committee membership, the laugh will be “can you believe we sold paddles as cheap as $300?”. DUPR was a fraud sold to rec play by a billionaire (who I like btw). We ran tennis tournaments for years with no DUPR equivalent, and not once checking for legal racquets and strings. If ATP or WTA tried to control local tournaments, they would have been sent packing. I see lots of rec players ruining their enjoyment of the game by becoming obsessed with their weekly DUPR fluctuations. The greed at the top should not have this impact on rec … rec doesn’t need pro pickleball … it’s the other way around. My bad joke … I didn’t ruin my rec pickleball experience with DUPR, I ruined it buying 100 paddles, but no poly, I have standards and self control.

Is 90-100 like a 7.5 oz - 8 oz paddle, 100 - 117 like a 8 oz - 8.5 oz paddle, 118 + like a 8.5 oz and above. Or is it more like if the paddle is more head heavy or balanced? What I came up with: - return of good deep serve when taking of bounce rather than usual full swing, extra weight helps with the block return - blocks volleys at kitchen off good 3rd shot drives - some resets My thinking is light head heavy paddle fine for full swings … serves, drives, flicks, overheads … but there are definitely shots where extra mass is useful. What other shots do others think benefit from heavier static weight?

    I think you paddle reviewers have got swing weight, static weight and balance point all wrong. OK … that was clickbait 😁, love you guys … but perhaps a different perspective to stir discussion. I’m going to use tennis for analogies … I understand tennis and racquets, and find paddle tradeoffs in pickleball doubles a mystery that can’t be solved. Disclaimer Some or all of the following could be wrong. 😋 Swing weight: In tennis, swing weight would apply to arm swinging from shoulder, not any racquet rotation at the hand (called racquet lag in tennis). - So did I just suggest swing weight isn’t the best metric for a pickleball flick … yes I did. - Did I suggest swing weight is a good metric across paddle shapes for serves and baseline drives … yes I did. - Did I suggest static weight and balance are better metrics for racquet or paddle rotation at hand … yes I did. Static weight: Static weight matters … you paddle nerds blew this one … break it to brother Lanky gently … love the chickens and horny cows. Guys … one of the weirdest and awesome things for me coming from tennis is the pickleball firefight. We didn’t have that in tennis (some good reaction tennis volleys with four guys at the net but short lived). There is so much quick arm/hand movement from point A to point B in firefights before you ever hit the ball (paddle rotation at the hand or not). No … sorry to say … a 1 oz addition of weight is not your friend on those movements. One could argue it’s worth the tradeoff for x, y or z … but we just have to stop with the “static weight doesn’t matter”. btw … another place tennis players ran into static weight limits is serving. That point in back scratch throwing motion where you are lifting the full weight of racquet up before the momentum of the racquet takes over. There are places where perfect technique can’t protect your rotator cuff from too heavy for you. Balance: The hammer is used as swing weight analogy. I would like to use it here as a question about flicks and rolls: The hammer is head heavy, and even a light hammer can drive nails. If we swing holding head of hammer, you can whip it fast but you can’t drive a nail. You see where I’m going with this … somebody stop me. Don’t we want to flick with light hammer holding handle? 🙄

      btw … a racquet is a 27” lever, so at the end of a arm, weight toward tip of a 11+ oz racquet will add to centrifugal force. Same for 8 oz 16” lever (paddle), but to me feels like trivial difference compared to racquets.

    4:27 you can't glean anything from this. The sample size was way too low. Even with the results you have, twice as many people preferred the stock, unweighted paddle than the setup you preferred (with 1 oz of weight added). Two thirds of the paddles had weight added, but 40% of the people preferred the unweighted paddle despite it only representing 33% of the paddles offered. None of this is statistically significant, but even with this low sample size it doesn't argue in favor of the weighting.

    is this accurate, though? I can kind of understand the balance point thing but its not rotating from the center/balance point. Your still effectively rotating or flicking from the wrist, so the amount of weight/mass above that point is the same? Know what I mean?

    Tennis players just popped off the butt cap cap, and stuck tungsten putty wrapped in a cotton ball in trap door. When the paddle industry gets around to improving handles they should also have butt cap caps, and a better way to refer to butt cap caps.

  • @harryhoople1684

    The ability to quickly flick (rotate) the paddle is defined by the swing weight. If you want a faster flick you have to reduce the swing weight. Adding weight (the Slyce Cap) can only increase the swing weight and decrease the flick speed. And, no, adding weight doesn't increase maneuverability. Adding weight can only decrease maneuverability. If the Slyce cap really provided an advantage don't you think the Slyce website would contain a technical explanation with examples of how the Slyce Cap improved the performance of popular paddles? The only advantage to adding the Slyce Cap is that more speed is imparted to the ball during the ball/paddle collision (faster serves).

    • @omadscience7358
      @omadscience7358 6 днів тому

      This is incorrect. Go tape some weight to your butt cap and see if it decreases your flick. I assure you it wont. Think of it like a sword. They weight the hilt so its easier to swing. Adding weight does not decrease maneuverability. It depends where you put it. Simply adding weight to the butt cap only will actually decrease your serve speed. Once installing the cap 4-6 grams back into the head @ 3/9 will do that.

    • @harryhoople1684
      @harryhoople1684 6 днів тому

      @@omadscience7358 We'll agree to disagree. Adding weight (Slyce Cap) near the pivot point marginally increases the swing weight and therefore marginally decreases the ROTATIONAL speed (flick) of the paddle. However, there is a larger penalty to pay for LINEAR motions such as moving the paddle horizontally by extending your arm out sideways to punch a shot away from your body. Adding a Slyce Cap increases the typical paddle mass from 8 to 9 ounces (12%) and the result is a 6% increase in the time to reach the desired destination. I'm well acquainted with Turner's sword design paper. The hilt is not used to make it easier to swing; it's used to move the percussion point ( sweet spot) near the end of the blade. The desired percussion point for a pickleball paddle is not near the end of the paddle, but is near the center of the paddle face.

    As a brand ambassador for Slyce I have tried them all. Personally their new (Slim Cap) is the best. I found the standard 1oz (28g) made the butt cap too fat and bulges out. The (15G) model is not a good value. It basically is the same as some standard caps that are already on your paddles. Some are glued and some have like 6-8 staples in them so you would just be replacing one for the other just because you like the way it looks or better color. This will have no effect on paddle performance. The Slim version is the best of both worlds. It weighs just under 1oz (24g) and also does not bulge out at the bottom hence the "slim" model. All of these caps require you to remove the oem grip and either replace with replaced oem leather grip or what I recommend is the pink XS hesacore and a Udrippin overgrip. I have recommended several of these to and have installed a ton of them. These also help with Tennis Elbow due to lowering the balance point which Brandon did not bring up. Taking the weight out of the head and making it lower makes your paddle easier to swing relieving arm pain long term. What I also found on some paddles too with just installing the cap alone was actually a power loss due to shifting the balance point. It is recommended also adding maybe 2g back at about the 10 and 2 position to level it out. Keep in mind. DO NOT pay attention to static weight. A 9.5 oz paddle can easily play like a 7.5 oz paddle and be super fast in the hand when set up properly. Great video Brandon. Discount Code: AdamS10 Hesacore Code: AdamS

    Braydon … just do you … we already liked that Braydon. You got bad advice, or you gave yourself bad advice suggesting you need to change. OK … I think the weight in the butt cap is utter nonsense other than one situation, and that is it got you to a static weight/balance point that was your preferred spec to begin with. I will give you an example from tennis. Say I preferred a 11.5 oz 4 pts headlight racquet (I did). Let’s say I found a 10.5 oz 4 pts head light racquet I wanted to alter to my preferred spec. If I add a 1 oz to butt cap, I end up with a 11.5 oz racquet, but it’s not 4 pts head light … not my spec … not equal. btw … I can’t remember anyone from my tournaments and USTA even talking about swing weight, we talked about static weight and balance. I was curious why that was after all this paddle swing weight interest, so I asked a friend that is the closest to a paddle nerd I know. His answer was racquets that are the same weight and balance tend to be very similar swing weights … industry standardization to some degree. I think with the flick example you used, my bet is most of us would actually do better with a lighter static weight head heavy paddle than a heavier static weight head light paddle. Say both with same swing weight of 115. Said another way, I bet I could flick a 7.5 oz head heavy 115 swing weight hybrid paddle better than with a 8.5 oz head light 115 swing weight paddle. To me … the “utter nonsense” part raises it’s ugly static weight head on quick extended arming movements. We are already doing that unnatural thing that should not be found in nature 🤣, leaning forward as far as we can, arm extended, all paddle weight at the end of that lever (arm) … and static weight doesn’t matter? It does on my arm, but then my arm doesn’t look like Kyle’s. 🤐 One last thing. I took a shot trying to get Kew to splain the following dilemma my mind has been struggling with to believe in butt weighting (some butt weighting is hot 😛, but not paddles). If we are talking seesaw, two people on each end provide counterweights, the pivot point is in the middle. But we are grabbing butt cap when we grip the end of the paddle … the Slyce, our hand and end of paddle has become one … the pivot point. What would be the difference if I had a 1 oz glove on instead of the Slyce, or 5 quarters in my hand instead? Until someone shows me the light … and that could happen, I think adding weight to butt cap only makes sense if you already wanted a heavier static weight paddle, and after you could also get to your preferred balance without too much additional lead … oops … tungsten. One last rant addition … I want that 7.5 oz head heavy paddle on flicks but not on drives. There is no way to solve this wiffle doubles dilemma. Paddle reviewer job security … the mythical search for the holy grail paddle continues.
