One summer, I spent a month cycling through Norway, cycling 2,500 kilometres between the southern city of Bergen and the Arctic city of Tromsø. In this video, I share my five must-see places to check out when cycle touring in Norway. Notes on locations: 1. Hardangerfjord is a day’s ride from Bergen. As with many places in Norway, there are some long tunnels in the area, so getting to parts of t...

Cycle Touring California: Big Sur's Old Coast Road and Wild Camping (4K)
Переглядів 3582 роки тому
If you can tear yourself away from the views on Highway 1, Big Sur’s 16-km (10-mi) Old Coast Road is a fun way of mixing things up when cycling the California coast. But with steep, winding tracks through ranches and redwood forests, be prepared for it to take a few hours! After finally making it to the end of the Old Coast Road, I continued along Highway 1 at sunset until I found an abandoned ...

I set up my tent in a dark, misty park between the airport and San Francisco on my first night Cycle Touring in California. The sun was illuminating the bay and the Pacific when I started hiking with my bike over San Bruno Mountain. I spent the afternoon riding in the Marin Hills watching clouds conceal and reveal the Golden Gate Bridge before camping by an old fort on a clifftop.

Join me as I bikepack around the coast of Ibiza in winter, sleeping wild in my hammock. In this episode, I wake beside the ruins of a stone house, then continue down a rough track to an isolated cove on the west coast. After hauling my loaded bike back up the track, I head to an abandoned beach bar before racing to see the sun set behind the islet of Es Vedrà. #cyclingibiza #cycletouringspain #...

Camping in Portugal is legal nowadays, but you can only stay for max 24h at the same place. Is forbidden to camp in any natural reserve and in private properties (unless the owner allows it), we must have to take in account that 93% of the Portuguese forest is private.
Most part of Spain is just too hot in summer time to cycle.
Thanks, some great tips and information there. I'm going in July. And well done on the ride, that's a great achievement. Just some feedback on your editing. Your music is too loud over your voice. I found it really difficult to hear you. It would be much better if you cut the music while you are talking to the camera.
Thanks! Yes, this was the first video I made like this, and looking back now the music's clearly too loud 😅Have a great trip!
This looks marvelous! Such a beautiful light and so few people.. Great!
One of the benefits of taking a ferry that arrives at 6am. 😅
Great video thanks.
Thanks!
Hi, I like your videos. How do you protect yourself of insects, snakes, etc. while sleeping without a tent?
Thanks Sergey! I'm not usually in places where there are a lot of snakes, so I've never had to really worry about them. If there are mosquitoes around, I've got a head net that I'll wear when sleeping.
I've cycled Bilbao to Malaga and Barcelona to Vigo, usually stayed in rooms above bars, they are cheap & near beer..... I like to to tour in football years, the World Cup or the Euros, so that even in tiny places the bars are busy at night. This June it's Alicante to Cadiz.
really nice video with good information. I am 81 years of age and used to be a decent cyclist. Planning to rent eBike and see the Douro valley. Do you think I will get enough assist on the bike especially going up hills riding in the Douro? Or would I be wiser to cycle Andalucia where the grades are not as steep?
Hi Stephen, sounds great! I think it would be possible to find a route in either that doesn’t require too much climbing. Looks like the N108 out of Porto follows the river for a while and so isn’t too steep (the first 45 km have 450 metres of climbing). I suppose the time of year could be a deciding factor as Andalucía is famously hot in summer!
I'm from Spain and I think I can add a few things: For number 2, although wild camping is illegal, you can put a vivac almost anywhere legally For number 3, bars and that sort of place will always give you tap water for your bottles for free, it's a law.
Good to know, thanks!
I’m not a cycling purist but I want to embark on my first set of touring rides this summer. I’m thinking of doing 60~70 km a day for a week. Is an e-bike a good idea?
I've never used an e-bike, but I don't see why you couldn't use one for a tour. 60-70 km per day is usually quite a comfortable distance on a normal bike assuming the terrain and elevation are reasonable.
Thank you.
I’ve just come across your channel and thoroughly enjoying your videos. I’ve done a lot of backpacking around California and stayed in a hostel near the GGBridge at fisherman’s wharf some years back. If I remember correctly the fog horns are on Alcatraz island. Is that a Kona sutra? Just got one myself and love it. I was hoping to do the trans-America cross country route this May but have had to postpone due to illness in the family. I’m planning a shorter trip instead doing the length of the outer Hebrides and possibly returning on the Caledonia Way. Regards, Carl. Scotland.
Hi Carl, thanks for watching! Yes, it's a Kona Sutra. I got it a few years ago and am still very happy with it. Shame about the America trip falling through, but the Scotland trip sounds amazing!
Glad I found this video as i am planning to spend two weeks in Spain on my bike at the end of May and beginning of June (I actually have 18+days but 6 of these will be spent getting to and from Spain from the NW UK. I'm not young or super fit so was hoping to get to Santiago by train from Santander or Bilbao and then cycle back as the hills seem slightly kinder that way - do you have any thoughts on this or info re trains?
Sounds great! Looks like it should be possible to get from either Santander or Bilbao to Santiago by train, though you'd probably need to change trains a few times and may need to keep your bike in a bag. I'm hoping to ride the Camino Frances later this year, starting in the south of France and following the pilgrim route to Santiago.
Thanks for the great video, full of inspiration. I am planning a ride N-S from Santiago de Compostela to Faro in October/November 2024. Will get onto EV1 in Portugal. Any tips welcome? Thanks.
Sounds great man! I’m planning to do a ride finishing in Santiago around the same time! I mainly went east to west, so only did a bit of the EV1 route, but Cabo da Roca and Sintra are worth a look if you’ve got time for small detours.
Thanks. Watch out for the prevailing Northerly wind - that's why I am choosing to go n to south.🙂@@IslandRides
May you need same ice cream in fact i give you 🎉🎉 or abaut that
Haha, thanks!
Love Fuerte it’s paradise (with high winds 😂)
Yeah, it's great, hope to get back there some day! (Despite the winds 😅)
That cave was a lucky find. It looked awesome. It had to be man made. More hike than bike. Maybe you need a bike that can handle off road riding? A 29er with 3 inch tyres? I have to say I much prefer Gran Canaria not only is it more beautiful than Tenerife, stunning landscapes, it is better for cycling on or off road. Why carry such a big rucksack?
Yeah, that cave was a great find! I bought my bike when I was doing more long-distance, road-based rides, but I would like to get something more suited to off-road routes as they interest me much more these days. My backpack just contains the bag I put my bike in during flights, so it’s quite light and saves me having to find cardboard boxes. I’ve only ever been to Gran Canaria for a beach holiday, but would love to ride there someday.
1. You didn’t mention the psychopathic Portuguese drivers. 2. Did you actually ride the EV1? In Portugal it is very rough unrideable in places or thick sand or punishing cobbled roads. There are lots of better places to ride a bike.
I didn’t have any problems with drivers luckily and only rode a very small section of the EV1.
That's truly the life man
OMG, you are unstoppable :D It is sometimes hard to just walk there... and with the bike... it is just another level :D
Haha, that blizzard at 2,000 metres stopped me in the end!
Nice! :D What month was it? I was in the Canaries in December and also in April... and it was OK to sleep in a tent, but on your video it looks cold at night :D
I was there in February. It was a little colder than I expected!
. @IslandRides OK, thank you. I think February is the coldest month, do you think it was colder than 10+ degrees at night? BTW. I really like your videos, they are very real in the way they show the atmosphere of these lonely journeys. I also love it.
@@uk574 Yeah, it was probably a little below 10 at night. Glad you're enjoying the videos! Hoping to upload another soon about a trip I did this summer in Greece and Italy.
@@IslandRides I will watch for sure :D
Beautiful
A ripper of a fact filled video. Thanks mate there should more like this one, short and sweet to the point and directed to the end user to enjoy bike touring. 👍👍💯
Thanks man, appreciate it!
Amazing! Going to chance it, and go for this ride with my brother… thanks for lighting the fire 😊
Amazing, hope you guys have a great time!
holla..good to see you in Sardinia. Over there got abandoned village
That's cool, I always enjoy checking out abandoned villages!
And I always thought of Teneriffe as sunny.
It was by the coast!
Thanks for the advice, thinking of trying to do a big trip this year, would spain be too hot to cycle in augst? is there a time of year that would be ideal in terms of tepriture?
Hi Jack, the north coast might be OK in August, but most of Spain is really hot then. September and October would work in most parts.
You are tough guy, can survive anywhere
😂
👍
There is so much great transit around Montserrat: a train right to the monastery from Barcelona, a cable car from the base of the hill to the monastery, several funiculars to get you around the mountain from the monastery. But cycling there is car hell any way you slice it, even if bikers do it anyway. It’s shameful, actually, how hard it is to ride from Barcelona to Montserrat without risking your neck on sketchy, busy roads with no shoulders.
Yeah, it's a shame the route's not more bike friendly. A couple of times I've done the hike from the town to the monastery, which is probably my preferred way of getting there.
@@IslandRides Yes, the Montserrat hiking trails are lovely.
How safe did you feel cycling around Spain? My parents have a holiday home in the South so I've debated buying a bike there but everytime I visit Spain I can't help but feel it seems a bit ill-suited to cycling.
I've always felt safe, but it probably depends when you are. I've mostly ridden in the north and on the islands. I haven't ridden in the South, but I've visited lots of times and I know there are loads of busy roads following the coast! You could check out if there are any Green Ways near where you go if you want to avoid the traffic: www.viasverdes.com/en/itineraries/principal.asp
Thank you for the video, i know how much work you put into it, apreciate it a lot!
Thanks Damian!
Which camera are you using for te Video? . I hope you like my Island. 😊
A GoPro 10 and a Sony ZV1. Me encantó tu isla!
Good day to you! I am a senior rider on HONDA motorcycle from Japan. I am enjoying camping ,touring and upload video. Your touring video is so nice! Awesome! Full supported ! Have a nice day my friend!
Thanks Cub, sounds like a great trip you're on!
Thanks a lot for these insights! I'm planning a cycling trip to Spain this spring, and your video made me feel one step closer to that goal :)
Thanks man, hope you have a great trip!
Amazing view in N Zealand.
Hello, can I ask you, if you have experience with trains in Spain? We are planning trip from Barcelona to Sevilla in autumn 2023. We would like to arrive to Barca with the car, leave the car in Barca and go along seacoast to south. We want to travel back with train, but dont know how is it with this possibility there? Thanks a lot.
Hi Jenda, with the regional trains you can normally just walk on with your bike quite easily. However, with the long-distance/high-speed trains, you would probably need to dismantle your bike (e.g., take the wheels off) and put it in a bag: www.renfe.com/es/en/viajar/informacion-util/luggage/bicicletas-y-patines
Hi..I just found your channel, a lot of good tips for bike touring, thanks dude. Done subscribe your YT Ch.
Thanks man, have subscribed to you too.
@@IslandRides 🙂Thanks. I am excited to do bike touring across europe. Now I getting more information in youtube and web sites. when I am ready I will start long bike tour since I am not working anymore.
Music is too loud and doesn't add anything. Can't focus on the talk.
Great!
Thanks!
Thank you for the video, i live in Portugal and learned a few things. As a light alternative to the "caminho de santiago", you have the "caminho de fátima" its only around 100 km from lisbon to Fátima and is shared with the caminho de Santiago. Ps. Part of the Caminho trails are gravel.
Thanks Paulo. I hadn't heard of the Caminhos de Fátima. They look great.
awesome video
Thanks Mitchell!

Thanks!
Pushing your bike to Trolltunga? Crazy guy :) Nice video. Thanks.
Thanks man. Yeah, got a lot of strange looks from people on the way there!
Nice. Would you recommend inflatable kayaks?
They're great for saving space at home. I used a 2-person one for this trip, though it would probably be better to use a smaller one for bike trips as it was quiet heavy (about 17kg)!
I wish I'd know people like you
Loving your book! Great writing and really inspiring! Brilliant footage here!

Yep, rode that a few times.. Good workout but the views are worth it..
Yeah, man, well worth the effort!
