    Problem with social 2 So 2-7 So 2-6 So 2-1 So 2-9 So 2-8 So 2-5 fixes will look very differently. Like i would always think i am sp and grounded, i like healthy people as well, but deep hidden im intellectual, readed, physical, i like power, i hate too independent people over me, i need respect and i love hugs Lovely is a word being used by 2s and 9s too in data

      I know I'm in the minority here, at least based on the comments I get on these videos, but personally I'm not a huge fan of Tritypes. At a certain point I think it ends up being just different ways of describing the same things, but as the Enneagram gets narrowed further and further down into smaller and smaller niches (wings and arrows and instincts and groups and tritypes and so on), there end up being more possible Ennea-type combinations than there are atoms in the universe. And at that point, in my opinion, it becomes useless as a way of understanding people. Sure, every person is unique and will have their own little nuances, but at the end of the day, for the Enneagram to be useful, each of the nine types *must* have a lot in common... more in common than they have differences. Otherwise they wouldn't be the same Type. Again, that's just my opinion, but I'm always looking for ways to simplify and make the usage practical. If I did a video for every conceivable Type combination based on every Enneagram theory, I could spend many lifetimes working on it and not scratch the surface. Having said all that, people can and should use the tool in the ways that work for them. If Tritypes help people better understand themselves and those around them, I'm all for it. It just hasn't worked for me personally.

    My family convinced me that I was a difficult child who grew into a difficult adult. I was actually a slightly autistic firstborn with some health problems and clueless parents who grew up in a chaotic environment and I was accused of being difficult any time I didn't immediately cave to what the adults (of which I had at least 5 around trying to control me at any given time, not counting teachers). Because of this, I had to learn how to be water. You go with the flow, but you carve your own course through the landscape by sheer stubborn determination. And while I love the description of a type 9 having a volcanic temper, I usually liken an outburst to a tsunami... it builds up after the triggering event, smashes into anything that gets in the way, and is slow to dissipate and almost impossible to prevent once triggered.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast 2 дні тому

      That's a great analogy! Actually both of them. The idea of the 9 as water... going with the flow, able to fit into whatever shape it needs, but also grinding down the landscape slowly over time and then "tsunami smashing" after a triggering event. Thanks for sharing!

    As a 9 and a writer, I agree with everyone here except Chidi. Saying Chidi is a 9 is baffling to me. Yes, 9s can be indecisive, but it's because they don't care about the outcome (or rather, they convince themselves they don't). It's the "I'm good with whatever" mentality. They can get anxious when you pressure them to make a choice, but it's because you're introducing unwanted conflict. They're trying to avoid unrest by being easy going, so when you insist there is still a problem, they freak out. But, importantly, they're not actually freaking out over the decision itself because they still don't care about the outcome. Chidi cares very much about the outcome. He is indecisive because he believes there is an objectively right choice. And if there's a right choice, but he picks the wrong one, who knows what terrible things might happen? That fear drives Chidi through the majority of the series which makes me believe he's a head type. Specifically, I think he's a 5. He certainly fits the stereotype of the well-learned scholar who struggles to express deeper emotions, but more importantly, he operates on a theory of everything. They dive into this in the season 4 episode "The Answer." The conclusion of that episode--the conclusion of his whole character arc--is him telling himself "there is no 'answer,' but Elanor is the answer." That is a pure-blooded, quintessential type 5 moral: accept that you know nothing and embrace the people you love. If Chidi is a gut type, I'm willing to hear the argument that he's a 1 (given his drive to do what's right), but he is certainly not a 9

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast 13 днів тому

      That's a very compelling case! One thing to keep in mind is that this channel isn't actually about typing individual characters. It's about using select "moments" from movies and TV, combined with corresponding quotes from Enneagram literature, to paint an overall picture of what each Type looks like. In the very first version of these videos I didn't even include the film/character identifier, but I kept getting people asking me, "Who was that character? What movie was that?" There are places in these videos where I've intentionally used the "wrong" character/Type in a given video, because that individual moment works so well for another Type. Like in my Three video, I used a clip of George Costanza (who is absolutely a Six) because that moment is such a perfect encapsulation of the shadow side of a Three ("It's not a lie... if you believe it"). With Chidi specifically I think he's a good example of a fictional character that displays personality traits in weird combinations that a real human would likely never have. As you say, he is very concerned with doing what's right, but I think he's way too indecisive to be a One (of course I'm biased as a One myself). Five is a definite possibility, but I'm not sure that most Fives would obsess over the ethics of their actions to the degree that he does. Not to say that Fives aren't ethical, but their obsession would be more directed at the theoretical side. That's often the struggle for (unhealthy) Fives... get your brain out of the book, out of the theory, and *do* something productive with it in the world. So Chidi is this kind of weird Five/One/Nine hybrid (in my opinion). To that point, I bet I could make separate Chidi-only videos for each of those Types, using the same clips but different Enneagram quotes, and they'd all make sense. I'd argue that Leslie Knope from Park & Rec is a similar kind of amalgamation character. Anyway thanks for watching, and for the great Chidi insights!

    • @creativeoj
      @creativeoj 10 днів тому

      I suppose these videos are for learning first and foremost. From that perspective, that quiet, confident decisiveness Chidi displays near the end of the series absolutely showcases a healthy 9 attitude. I'd still argue his specific flavor of indecision is not really 9 coded, but he does often struggle to keep the peace which is 9's strongest character trait. I think tri-typing might fit Chidi well. 5/1/2, perhaps? I like tri-typing because it allows us to acknowledge all three instincts and show a more complete picture of a person's actions. Of course, it doesn't *really* help in this situation since we're arguing between two gut types. 😅 Excellent video, by the way. Forgot to mention that before

    Oof, I feel triggered by some of these. I think that when it comes to type 9s, 'sloth' does not necessarily relate to laziness (or at least not exclusively). We can effectively 'fall asleep' to our own wants and desires; to our own needs, because it is our natural inclination to put the needs of others before our own. That can be noble, right? Yea, but it can come at a cost. Being asked: "what do you want?" - blinks, considers... what do I want? I mean, really...? 🤔 Express yourself! For me, this depends on who I'm with. There are different versions of me: when I'm at work, when I'm with family or friends, when I'm alone. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be fully, authentically myself regardless. How cathartic would that be? But also, how oddly terrifying! I've often related to Frodo in that moment where everyone is arguing, to be like: oh ffs, I'll do it! I love how Walter Mitty develops as a character through this movie. He is in such a healthier place by the end of it.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast 23 дні тому

      Good thoughts! To your point, the unhealthy nines I’ve known haven’t been lazy so much as they have been… non-persons. Like a ghost you could put your hand through. There but not really there. I want to scream, “Make a decision!” Or more precisely, “Make the decision that you and everyone else knows is the right thing to do but that you are too scared to do!” But then it then becomes extraordinary when they actually do it!

    Captain Marvel is an awful type 8 story: she goes from being inhuman and barely feeling to... asserting even more power and control for herself, despite the fact the real lesson is to learn vulnerability and joining a greater cause (aka not being too much of a lone wolf). Her tragic arc is presented as heroic because the writers had no idea what they were doing.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast Місяць тому

      I have to disagree. She has to break free from the suppressive mind/power control she’d been under, the film ends with her leaving to help the refugee Skrulls find a home, and in Endgame she’s flying all over the universe helping planets that have it just as bad as Earth. I’ll admit that her re-appearance at the end of Endgame was a bit of a Deus Ex Machina, but she seems to be living a life entirely centered on greater causes, while teaming up with Avengers on certain occasions. I’m not saying it’s the greatest type eight story ever told, but I certainly wouldn’t call it tragic or awful.

    • @gianni206
      @gianni206 Місяць тому

      @@TypeCast It's tragic because she can't help but be consumed by her lust for power in the end. Isn't the lesson for 8s supposed to be about how they need to be more vulnerable?

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast Місяць тому

      I think “consumed by a lust for power” is a total misreading of the character (in my subjective opinion of course). She certainly “steps into her power“, but that doesn’t mean she’s consumed by it. I would venture as far as to say that this is a common problem for female type eights… owning their power is very often viewed negatively in a way that it wouldn’t be for men (ie a man is strong and assertive but a woman is a power-hungry bitch). Vulnerability is absolutely an area of healthy growth for eights, but I don’t think every “healthy“ depiction of an eight in media automatically has to show a bunch of scenes of them being vulnerable. But the scenes from Patton are a great demonstration of that. He kicks ass in the speech in the first clip, then cries over a wounded soldier in the second clip. Captain Marvel is also a fictional superhero with God-like powers, so I wouldn’t hold it out as the greatest real-world example as I said. It’s more about that individual scene for me.

    Do you think I am more sx 9 or so 9? I can't really tell. SX 9 - Union, Fusion: sense of being comes from merging with significant others; can have difficulty individuating and standing on their own without reference to other; tendency to lose sight of own needs and desires in favor of other. For Nines, union is the desire to completely merge oneself with a mate. The preoccupation can also extend to an absorbing wish to unite with the divine. Focused on an ideal of romantic union. Get lost in one relationship or in the yearning to have one. Can also deny their partner’s flaws and idealize them to stay in union. SO 9 - Participation (counter-type): participates in order to feel a part of the group; prioritizes group needs above their own and works hard toward those needs; fun-loving, sociable, congenial, doesn’t weigh others down with own woes. Participation in Social Groups: Nines are either totally aversive to joining groups, or they like to hang out with social groups, such as special activity clubs, and with friends I am currently single, have been for a very long time, but I do remember idealizing romance and love. I had this perfect image in my head of what my love interest would be like, only to be disappointed with reality. I always seem to be drawn to more aggressive or strong women for some reason. In terms of groups, I never really felt like I fit in with any groups, but I always wanted to belong or fit in without losing my individuality in the process. I find belonging in my church I'd say or when I am invited to parties. I can be quite bubbly, friendly, cheerful and a party animal even, though I am generally more introverted in my daily life. I will say though I can be like this I do get tired and need a day off the next day to recharge my batteries haha.

    I find that the Five is one of the most idealized and romanticized types in entertainment, which makes it one of the most popular and ironically under-represented and misunderstood. The arrogant, masculine genius is the predominant portrayal of Fives, when technically, the Five type has room for much more diversity in personality and even competence. Fixations on specific branches of knowledge can range from mathematics to more inconsequential niches like being a very zealous fan of Avatar The Last Airbender. Fives are Fear types. That means that their strategy is built around a response to fear. While other Head Types (like Sixes) want to control the uncontrollables, Fives want to eliminate the uncontrollables or at least, keep them at arm's length so they don't get hurt and aren't inconvenienced. Fear as an emotion is fixated on the anticipation of pain, and Fives are more sensitive to pain than most other types. They are highly sensitive individuals, so they compensate by protecting people's access to them. Emotionlessness (and general asshole-ery) is a misrepresentation of Fives. A better characterization of them would be to portray them as "cautious." They are rigorous thinkers because that is how they "control" their environment, by thoroughly understanding it first in order to avoid conflicts, inconveniences and psychic/emotional pain. They are hyper-aware of the world and other people's needs, wants, and desires, which is why they can also be intensely empathetic and understanding. They learned early on that being open is dangerous or just impossible to accomplish without being utterly depleted to the point of stagnation or mental breakdown, since very few people grasp how sensitive they are to negative stimulation and often downplay or make fun of that sensitivity. Yet Fives thrive when they grasp that people can also be a source of positive stimulation, which could also be a source of energy increase. As a (rare) Extroverted Five, I find that this sensitivity works both ways. I experience both intense sensitivity to positive and negative stimulation. It is far from impossible to be an Extroverted Five because Extroversion (like in the Big Five model) is also about sensitivity to positive emotions like excitement, joy and pleasure. I experience a hyper-sensitivity to both negative and positive stimulation (someone being intellectually or morally careless which usually coincide, or someone being inspiring and expanding my perspective on the world). People can upset or offend me easily due to their lack of thoroughness when it comes to cultivating their character, worldview or awareness of the world, which depletes me, and people can also be insightful, charming, and vulnerable without demanding any validation from me, which energizes me. Because of those intense experiences I have with people due to my hyper-awareness, I often withdraw as a way to survive potential overwhelm. The impressions people make on me also last longer and I feel the need to "escape" my body by diving into a world strictly made up of concepts, my mind palace where I can experiment and break things without it having any material consequence. This mental exploration can be both an outlet and a coping mechanism. When I'm healthy, it's usually the former. A place to contextualize my very strong feelings and vivid experiences. I have found that I am becoming more assertive in building the resilience necessary to reap the advantages of social connection. Not only do I find myself constantly inspired and energized to pursue solutions to my own explorations in my fields of interest due to the positive input of other people, but I find myself fulfilled and don't find it so necessary to rely on withdrawal as a coping mechanism. I expand my comfort zone, because the isolation of Fives ironically encourages mental and emotional fragility (Note: I do not force myself to be in company I do not want to be in, I simply practice contextualizing emotions and conflicts instead of catastrophizing them, because oftentimes Fives exhaustion can come from a misplaced sense of obligation, one that not everyone is going to demand of us). I find that taking an objective approach to my own (and even other's) emotions instead of moralizing or catastrophizing them (as Head Types can be prone to do) is necessary to building the internal resilience necessary to create more energy resources as opposed to merely mapping out where the black holes (be it people or situations) in my environment are so I can avoid them. This is why the Eight (a Body Type) Path for growth is part of Five's journey to stability, identifying strength, energy and safety as things that we can find outside of our intellectualization of everything. By seeing the abundance of energy, strength, help and freedom outside of our own minds, we discover that we are capable of incredible endurance and don't have to live like Dracula, locked up in our mind palaces. We can use our connections with others and to the physical world to expand our minds, and use our minds to expand the physical world. Because framing the world and the people in it as energy-vampires that will take more than they give is not only a catastrophizing of what is only an occasional rather than constant problem, but it makes our worlds smaller and our resources scarcer. Rather, we can identify also with our bodies and other capacities outside of our areas of theoretical expertise, thus defeating the typical self-fulfilling prophecy of scarcity (either of energy in the world or strength within ourselves) that plagues Fives.

    I don't agree that 4s deliberately try to craft a persona that's different from everyone else's. I believe that we end up being perceived as weirdos just because we're so committed to being authentic. We pursue everything that feels real and meaningful to us, even when that leads us down a path that no one else is on.

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast 6 місяців тому

      I hear what you're saying, although functionally in the end it sorta works out to be the same thing. Speaking only anecdotally from the 4's I've known in my life, I agree that "radical authenticity" is a huge part of it, but I also can't imagine a 4 being... "radically authentic just like everybody else." There's something of a contrarianism behind it, in my personal experience. As a Type 1 with a strong connection to Type 4, I personally feel that contrarianism... if the unwashed masses are into something, it must be garbage! I'm sure that's not true of all Type 4's though.

    Type 8 is not about fights. Its about bringing balance. Fighting is a desperate way to show it. Its a double multiple of 4, which by the way is also a representation of stability. Which is a derivitive of 2 which represents connection. So it goes like connection, stability and balance. Thats what you are looking for here. 8 in the eight trigram represents balance, from where the ying and yang symbol comes from. So you should have represented the number 8 in form of balance. Instead of conflict. Bad representation i would say.

    Thanks a million for the information.I have a question.I believe i am compassionate and emphatic.But,i very dislike(i used "Dislike"because i dont exactly know how it feels) intimate relationships with people.In addition while with some of my friends i feel like an outsider.So,are these a 5 thing?

    • @TypeCast
      @TypeCast 6 місяців тому

      Those could very well be Type 5 traits, although with the Enneagram what distinguishes each Type is much more about what's going on *internally* that's driving the behavior, not the external behavior itself. For example, it's conceivable that you could have nine different people (one of each Type) who all dislike intimate relationships, but they all feel that way for very different reasons. Now to be fair, that specific trait is much less likely with certain Types (probably 2 and some 6's) and more likely with others (probably 5 and 8). I'd recommend checking out the Type descriptions on the Enneagram Institute website and seeing if any of them really "jump out and grab you." Here's the link to the Type 5 description... www.enneagraminstitute.com/type-5/ This is the way that I recommend for anyone to figure out their Type. Taking a "test" can get you pointed in the right direction and get the options narrowed down, but reading through the descriptions of each Type is the best way to figure out your own. Check out that Type 5 description and let me know what you think!
