Type Seven: A Study in Enneagram Subtypes

- This video explores the three subtypes of the Enneagram Type Seven using three main characters from Ted Lasso, Marie Antionette, and Dead Poets Society.
From "The Complete Enneagram" by Beatrice Chestnut...
"The three Sevens each represent a different way of expressing or responding to the passion of gluttony. The Self-Preservation Seven finds security through a gluttonous search for pleasure, satisfying opportunities, and cultivating a network of allies. The Social Seven expresses a kind of anti-gluttony by being of service to others. The Sexual Seven channels gluttony into an idealistic search for the ultimate relationship and the best imaginable experiences."
Terminology differs between Enneagram teachers. Historically and today, most people refer to the Instinctual Variants/Biases as Social, Sexual, and Self-Preservation. Some substitute "One to One" for Sexual, although I personally think this mis-represents the nature of the Sexual "instinct", and is based more in an aversion/misunderstanding what "Sexual" actually means.
Teachers Mario Sikora and Maria Jose Munita of Awareness to Action use the alternate names of Navigating, Transmitting, and Preserving, which I think do a better job of capturing what each Instinct is actually going for.
I really like watching type 7 characters in tv shows. They're great protagonists, and very charming, inspiring, and fun. That said, I would be deeply exhausted interacting with one on a daily basis. I'm also a type 5.
(side note: robin williams was an exceptional human being.)
I think that’s what they mean by “good fences make good neighbors.”
Working on this video was bitter sweet. Robin Williams was a special soul with a such a unique voice. Greatly missed.
I think this also works because in movies you don't see the 7s struggling to start doing the dishes, or any other boring chore!!!!!
Thank you for making this. As a 7, I find this video both extremely relatable and informative on how to be a better version of myself
Thanks! That’s exactly why I made this channel. It’s very encouraging to hear that it was helpful for you.
As a self - pres 7 that description and the Marie Antonniete references made me cry 🤧🤧
Hopefully happy tears of self-knowledge?!
@@TypeCast Exactly 👍
The first enneagram video I've seen (and I feel like I've seen em all!) that leaves me actually feeling proud to be a Seven. Thank you.
That’s maybe the best compliment I’ve ever received on this series. I’m so happy to hear that! Yes, seeing yourself represented can hurt, but I know when I watch my own Type One video I feel proud to be a One. I’m glad you feel the same! And I aspire every day to be more like a Seven… “Be curious, not judgmental.”
This series is just so moving.... this juxtaposition of some of the most powerful scenes in movie history with accurately-placed enneagram text which is already incredibly powerful in itself.
Music to my ears! That’s exactly what I’m going for. Thanks!
Thank god, I'm really glad that u've made this video already🤩
I’m glad to be of service!
These videos are superb. Really explains the enneagram well.
Thanks, that’s what I’m going for!
A video about what each enneagrams repressed subtype looks like would be great.
I'll keep that in mind for future content.
I hope you are monetizing all of your hard work! It’s amazing all that you’ve placed into these videos and you deserve to receive just as much as you have given 🤗
I certainly appreciate that! Unfortunately I can’t monetize the videos because of all the copyright claims. Maybe I’ll start a Patreon page someday.
@@TypeCast Great idea! Or even Enneagram merch, quick e-books, or some type of simple digital products for enneagram types. You’re already doing phenomenal work, so I know you’ll do awesome whichever option you choose!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm a 7 and this really touches me.
Thanks for watching! I’m always glad to hear when these videos connect with people.
Have you ever thought about having a panel with different types and asking them questions about film and television? I guess just a straight panel/interview might not be of interest to you, but you could have people present like their top 3 of characters they personally think represent their own type and why and so forth.
It's not a bad idea! You should check out "The Enneagram in a Movie" podcast with Mario Sikora. He has on various Enneagram teachers as guests and they discuss different Types as expressed in films. And... shameless plug... I'm joining him and TJ Dawe as a co-host for Season 3. We're in the process of recording now. Stay tuned for that!
Great video as always! I had a feeling that my stack had shifted from having transmitting on top to social on top since my early 20s and this definitely reinforced that line of thinking. I think once the rose colored glasses came off and I faced the reality that not every moment can be charged and full of meaning (as mentioned in your video) was when that shift came. It is interesting to me how the stereotype of the 7 can be this vapid social butterfly when in my experience I have always had very intense interest in really getting to know people deeply and as quickly as possible. Now I have met other 7s (probably more self-preservation types) that really dont. But then again when I see enneagram memes I often relate to the 9 ones more than the 7 ones these days...
I think Sevens are one of the most misunderstood Types. Or maybe I’m just biased cause I don’t really understand them! Trying to learn more though.
@@TypeCast Don't say that, you'll hurt the feelings of 4s everywhere!
@@TypeCast Just a little joke, I don't think you're alone. Even the comments on this video kinda have me scratching my head... Maybe the descriptions are just so abstract-sounding and somehow make us seem like we are never sad? It just seems logical to me! If you want to see a celebrity that I think exemplifies a 7, I think of Jim Carey. He is so high-energy and crazy, but then in "Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond", you can see that underneath it all is someone who has spent his life looking for meaning in life and the universe. Highly intelligent, maudlin, and deep-thinking. Of course also just totally insane. And he would be an extreme of someone who is a 7, NOT the average Joe.
Their feelings are hurt regardless.
Jim & Andy is a great documentary! And he’s a great Seven as well.
7's are terrifying, just in general people who are always smiling scare me like for the love of everything get angry or something
Just lock a Seven alone in a dark room for long enough and they’ll get angry.
@@TypeCast You got me on point, but since as a Sexual Seven, I might get sad.
That’s true.
idk i get angry alot as an sx7 lol
They have such gentle souls, it really takes a lot to make them angry so you don't want to be that person it feels awful
I am a 7 and these are some of my favorite characters! I never made the connection, though!
That’s great! As a One, I try to integrate as much Seven as I can. “Be curious, not judgmental” is a helpful mantra.
this is so informative!
"Informative" is my main goal, so that's high praise!
Yeeeeah, I'm a 7w8 with the sexual instinct. That's just the way it is. Way to be called out. Nice video in general.
I see you. And thanks for watching!
Ooh interesting! I'm a 7w6 with a social instinct! Nice to meet a fellow 7 in the wild!
@@SaccharineCHNOS Indeed it is! Greetings friend. Hope you are well.
Are you going to make one of these for Enneagream 8 or did you do the the Godfather one for the 8 subtypes?
Well… The Godfather video was the first Subtypes one I did, more for the fun of using three characters from the same film. Then I thought I may as well continue and do the rest of the Subtypes, but there aren’t any other films (that I’m aware of) that so prominently showcase all three Subtypes together. So now the Type Eight Subtypes video stands out from the rest and also lacks any female representation.
I’ve considered doing another Type Eight Subtypes video like the rest of the series, the problem is that a lot of the book material would likely have to be duplicated, which I don’t like. So for now I’m going to finish the remaining videos (6 is done and awaiting copyright release, then 2 and 3), then I’ll take a look at the Eights again and see if another video is possible.
I think a strong argument can be made that Ted Lasso is a social 9.
Hmm... I'd need to hear the case for that. Ultimately I think he needs Excitement/Enthusiasm much more than he needs Peace.
Plead your case!
Although I should add that most of these characters are very subjective, and we all "see what we want to see." What's most important is that we can learn from them. So if you gain some insight into Nines from Ted Lasso, and other people gain wisdom into Seven, that's just fine with me!
I agree that Ted Lasso is definitely a 7❤
Type Cast - what number are you? Well done on all these videos
I'm a One. Thanks!
@@TypeCastmakes sense!😂
@@zaniahsims Not sure if that's good or bad... but I'll take it.
@@TypeCast def a good thing
Even better!
Regards to the oaks, she would of rather liked the modern machines which dig out mature trees, rootball and all, and transplant them to a new location!
A woman out of time.
I have all 3 insticnts but im not sure sx so or sx sp
Everyone has all three instincts to some degree. You might just be more evenly split on your secondary.
@@TypeCast Probably 7w8 sx/so/sp
I see Self presetvation as equivalent to my Si in MBTI. I like to treat myself to fancy dinners but it seems like definitely sx/so is more likely
I know I am a type 7w8 but how do I know which of these three subtypes I am?
Well… That’s for you to decide! I guess a good place to start is to ask which of these three you most relate to? Not that that would be automatically conclusive but could get you pointed in the right direction.
Beatrice Chestnut’s “The Complete Enneagram” has the best Subtype descriptions that I’ve found, and you can probably find them online with some clever Googling.
@@TypeCast Thank you so much!! :))
So - Self sacrificing
Alleviate others’ pain
Sp - Ambitious to open up options
Yeah, that seems about right.
i may be so/sx or sx/so because my sp is pure garbage
Lol, at least you got it narrowed down.
Ted Lasso is a Social 2, not a 7!
I could see a case for that for sure.
but his was all positive ? oh my
Who was all positive?
Warning: video says the f-word
Fun?
idk if i’m a 7 or a 2 and it’s driving me insane 🥲
i feel like i’m more self interested than a 2 and i always seek thrill and pleasure and want to avoid pain and i’m always planning and need to look toward to the future, i find it hard to stand still and i’m very easily bored and impatient. im afraid of working and having responsibilities put on me bc i want to be free to do whatever whenever and have constant fun. my mind is never set on the present. i’m not as sacrificial as a 2, but i have a strong desire for love and i’m very image conscious so idk 🥲
I mean… that sounds like 95% Seven and 5% Two, lol. Twos aren’t the only ones who have a strong desire for love, so that’s not a deal breaker.
Did you watch my other videos for Seven and Two? Which of the characters most strike you as feeling like yourself?
