I just went on Etsy and there are folks selling dbrand phone mount adapters for like $10. They are a screw clamp design. Since I don't want to abandon my steam desk case this is another nice option for people
Installing sunshine on the deck and moonlight on the phone and using a regular usb cable for tethering should end up in less latency for the display compared to the adapters you have now
Tbh, latency is just about negligible with either wired or wireless solutions when everything's working properly. Though, I've typically had a more reliable experience with USB-C to HDMI connections as shown in the video.
Can you try using the Killswitch cover from dbrand + the deckmate adapter to see if it makes it more sturdy? Or just showcase the cover and how it may benefit from the adapter using deckmate please 🙏 haven't seen anyone do this and really would appreciate it
I actually don't have one to demonstrate. However, I'm not quite sure how the cover would improve the deckmate or phone mount's fit any. They're both designed to sit flush with a Steam Deck.
@GameXData thanks for the reply! I was just curious since the killswitch's mount adapter is built into the cover whereas it doesn't need any adhesives. It just needs a 3d printed deckmate killswitch adapter to use the same accessories. The cover itself is made from a sturdy plastic type material so I was hoping it would take off some of the weight issues for things that were trying to be held with the deckmate adapter
@@jimbobcheezeburger2020with the kill switch and compatible accessories that go on that universal notch you're talking about the main advantage it has is the better leverage. With proper leverage the weight distribution makes it seem much better regardless of how much something will weigh more or less.
Magnet Too Strong? Put the metal ring between your case and the phone. Don't even need to use the adhesive to try it out. Don't know if that would become to weak, just theoretical. They also sell metal disks, where there would theoretically be more magnetism (in case you wanted to use the described technique and it was too weak). Too Top Heavy? You can also have the second monitor below the steam deck instead of above. Just other ideas, with different pros/cons.
The attraction between the magnet actually doesn't stick well to the provided metal ring through other objects. Unfortunately, there's also not enough room between a good-fitting case and phone to stick the ring. I've previously tried with multiple phones and cases. The best solution is a case with a built-in metal ring. Mounting below the Steam Deck is an option that works. However, if someone feels it's too top heavy the standard way, they'll likely feel it's too bottom heavy the other way. In my experience, mounting on the bottom also makes the setup much more difficult to comfortably rest on a tabletop.
UPDATE: I ordered the Shadowcast 2, I already had an HDMI to USB-C adapter, and I'm using the included type C cable. My phone, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, will not do anything when I plug in the phone to the ShadowCast. I've tried plugging in my Odin 2 as the receiver and it'll just turn the ShadowCast on and off without even holding a signal. What am I doing wrong? I know the cables and such all work because I reverse it and plug it into my Steam Deck (Windows) OBS and I can see video from the Odin 2 going into the steam deck. Do you need the Shadowcast device?
If you're using a phone, pretty much. For a portable, handheld setup, you need a capture card to connect the two devices. Shadowcasts are the most compact option available.
@Sizzyl Not quite. The Deckmate grip is fairly tight-fitting to the Steam Deck's design. For a Legion Go, you'd want to look into their universal grip (which attaches to the back via adhesive)
Would the shadow cast work on a external monitor ? Im struggling to charge and use my steam deck with my external monitor and hoping the shadow cast helps some how. Thank you for your help in advance 🙏
Not exactly. Shadowcasts and other capture cards are only really good for translating a video out signal from one computer into something useable by another. It sounds like what you're looking for would be either a USB-C hub or a dock. As long as you get one with a display out port plus an extra USB-C port for charging, you should be able to add an external power source.
Can the melonds thing be done with an Odin 2 and a phone? How do I do it on just android without Windows? I've gotten the screen to mirror, but I don't know how to make them separate displays
For Android, you'll need to use DraStic. Within DraStic's Video Settings you'll find an option for how to output to an external device. Update your settings to your tastes, and it should work without too much hassle.
I have! It works perfectly fine. Although, in general, I've found that I just have to spend a bit more time tweaking the colors in USB Camera Pro to get it to my liking between devices. If you're not like me and testing a dozen devices back to back it should be fine though.
your hairline be receding but your sympathy be rising alot in your videos. but watching videos on your phone and playing games on the steam deck seems to be an amazing option btw! the only argument for standalone pcs is that you can put additions to your setup. but having those on your steam-deck seems pretty amazing too
Bringing a 3DS with 2 integrated screens is much lighter than attaching a screen to the Deck. You also eliminate potential compatibility issues. IMO foldable phones lend themselves much better to DS gaming. I mean it is fun to hack together a dual screen Steam Deck but only until the arms get sore. Foldables are much lighter and easier to carry, even with a separate gamepad. If you have a lot of patience and money to burn, you could look into the AyaNeo Flip DS. It‘s as thick as 3DSes and powerful enough to run Starfield.
@juliawolf156 I get that, but this video is a review of a mounting system to add a second screen to a handheld. Buying a 3DS isn't an equal alternative to the mounting system, nor would be buying a dedicated dual screen handheld.
I'm not sure why this channel doesn't get more views. Everything is well shot and very informative.

Deckmate also sell an official Killswitch to Deckmate adapter piece
Cool, geeky stuff. I'm not sure if I have a practical use for dual screens, but I think it's very cool that it can be done.
This came up and was my first introduction to your channel. Great videos and you deserve more subs.

it's a shame they give the option of using the same mechanism that attatches to the steamdeck on the phone
can you use it on the bottom instead of the top? I'd prefer having a larger top screen for emulation.
Yep! The connectors are symmetrical and easy to flip. It's just a bit more awkward to set on a table if you do.
@@GameXData also figured I could ask this while im here, but would the steam deck connector thing work for the legion go?

@@GameXData gotcha, ty for all the help lol
What is the name of the piece?
Is there any option for this thing that uses a clamp rather than a magnet? My phone case has a kickstand, and I'd rather not lose access to it.
I built an adapter for the Steam Deck a while back that works quite well.

For sure! It's available over on my Ko-Fi shop alongside instructions on how to put it all together.

Could this work with a dedicated USB screen also? Like a Vocore screen or something like that?
If it's not too heavy
