Slicing Articulated Action Figures for 3D Resin Printing
So I get asked pretty regularly for advice on how to print the action figure parts and pieces that I sell, specifically how I support them and slice them. I've always resisted the urge to do a tutorial video and instead pointed people to the many videos that already exist out there. The problem though seems to be that though there are plenty of resin printing tutorials out there, not many of them focus on printing that parts of articulated figures, instead they seem to focus on statues and miniatures that don't need to be printed in separate pieces and then assembled.
So I finally made a dang tutorial to address these specific needs!
As I say multiple times in the video, be aware that everyone's best practices will be different based on their printer, the resin used, and the atmospheric conditions in their workshop. Please use the workflow I'll outline in this video as a guide and starting point for your own experimentation. What works for me might not work for you!

Check Out the Paint Work of Keepers Kustoms!

As I've said before, I'm a real bum when it comes to painting my own figures - I have a backlog of my own designs (and some from Trash Compactor and Vivid Motion too!) that I just haven't made the time to paint. So when a painter like Steven at Keepers Kustoms steps up to the plate to help me out...I'm more than happy to let him! Check out the figures he painted for me and if you'd like him to ...

I always get asked "Hey Funky, do you sell fully-painted figures?" And the vast majority of the time, I say "no" mainly because I just simply don't have the time! But also, at this point...there are a handful of really super-talented painters-for-hire out there that will paint my figures for you much more beautifully that I could anyway. So why the heck would I bother? ;) One such amazing paint...

Do You Know If Your 3D Printed Figures are Safe?

I've seen some disturbing photos out there lately that make me afraid that there are folks out there operating as print shops for fans, who are NOT taking resin printing safety precautions seriously. A poor printing process can lead to: 1. Customers getting lackluster products 2. The print-maker running a contaminated and unsafe workshop 3. Customers being exposed to toxic, uncured resin This i...

      @@BanthaPooDoo64 that's great! Sometimes the tackiness is resin that was cured and therefore safe, but the print just wasn't completely dried/cleaned before curing. In those cases, wiping as you did is sufficient.

    I was told, some time ago, to always make sure my angle degree was always 47... no idea if it actually makes any difference at all. My figs are constantly plagued with support pocks... hate it.

    • @funkymaclunkey
      @funkymaclunkey 4 дні тому

      Never heard the 47 degree rule before - that sounds made up! :) The key I've found to reducing the support pocks is to adjust the side and penetration depth of the support tips to get the right balance between strength and minimal size. Try messing with the support tips!

    How is this not Illegal Bootlegging though?

    • @funkymaclunkey
      @funkymaclunkey 5 днів тому

      Well I'm glad you asked! Honestly, those of us who make figures based on intellectual property owned by giant corporations do indeed operate in a 'grey' area. Generally, with the exception of some notoriously litigious IP owners, corporations that preside of popular franchises want to walk the line carefully between encouraging bootlegging and pissing off their biggest fans. Thus, there are a few rules that I follow to keep everything above board: 1. I don't use any logos, Star Wars or otherwise, on anything I make 2. I don't offer scans OR printed figures of anything commercially available. For instance, you won't catch me selling 3d files for any of the Hasbro Retro figures! 3. If Hasbro or another toy company releases a vintage style figure of a character, I won't offer it. That's one reason why I'm not making the main cast of the Acolyte. 4. If an IP owner asks me to stop selling something, I will do it immediately with no questions asked. We are operating under their watchful eye and they are within their rights to stop us at any time. Most importantly, high-level employees of Hasbro, Mattel, and other toy companies follow me and other creators on Instagram and engage with the custom figure community regularly. If they wanted to stop us they could, but instead they choose to encourage the fandom as long as everyone plays nice in their sandbox. Hope that helps!

I've always hated the giant retro stickers...why not just a smaller version in one of the corners. Maybe instead of all the artificial weathering, how about a red/racetrack style border with the retro logo in a corner of it. Why not release all the retro figs at least on Hasbro Pulse as individual carded figures. So disappointed in the limited/exclusive distribution....

    I agree. I do packaging design for a living. And all that copy is not mandatory. It’s lazy. They don’t want to spend the money to design a card back. They can easily use the same one for all. Even the UPCs are not unique. So when you search for a product by UPC, it can change by year of release.
