  • So I don't really collect any "new" or "modern" toys these days, but I do have a soft spot for Vintage- or "Retro-" styled figures like Hasbro's Retro Star Wars series and Mattel's MOTU Origins line. But how can one of those lines get the packaging so RIGHT and the other get it so WRONG?!? Let's discuss, shall we?

I mentioned on another video that I'm planning to do a video showing off the Holiday Special figures I got from you. Of course it's to show off your work and point people to your etsy shop, but I'll also be showing off the custom cards I've made to display the finished figures. Of course the back has pics of the other Holiday Special figures ;)

As an artist the packaging is the best part ;) It's all about presentation.

Right? The photography and the illustrations add so much depth to the packaging. And the more time a person, regardless of age, spends interacting with a product, the more likely they are to a) share it with others and b) be inspired to buy more.

I began keeping packaging for two reasons… one was for storing the large toys and two was for the complete checklist of figures.

And not having the interactive card back seriously cut down on diehards buying MOC multiples just to have all the cardbacks. After seeing completists go nuts over the rainbow test shots, you’d think Hasbro would change its mind on the backs of cards.

Checklists were always such a fun part of collecting. Strange how most lines have steered away from this considering it gives incentive to purchase more

Right?! I mean that's why sets of trading cards always came with checklist cards...everyone wants to see their set completed!

kenners 100th batman figure box was basically made for this kinda thing - as it listed every batman figure released all the way up to the super powers line. great stuff especially when the internet wasnt really an option

i like the packaging more than the toys, most of the times, especially the vintage stuff. when i do my own kitbashes i have as much fun doing the packages than the toys

That's an example of how Hasbro gets it wrong while Mattel gets it right. Mattel puts updated versions of vintage artwork and style onto their packaging to appeal to that sense of nostalgia. Meanwhile, Hasbro seems to thing that artificially "distressing" the cardback achieves that same goal. And it does NOT.

So I says to him, I says, "Tell me I'm wrong, baby. Tell me I'm wrong!" and he said "I Can't. 'Cause you're NOT!".

Excellent video! I remember marking up cards the same way as a kid. And thanks for pointing out the great packaging of the MOTU origins. Makes collecting them that much more fun!!

I used to plan my next figure and what I wanted the same way the card backs or booklets in the vehicles.
Now you have to ho to private websites and either save the image and modify the image in MSPaint, or print it out and do the circles.
    I miss the fun times.

@funkymaclunkey I also wish they would expand the line. More releases. I'm sure there will be an Ahsoka series 2 release, after Episode 1 and the Ep 2&3 release.
But we also need more original figures released.
Then Rogue One, 2 waves needed there. Mando wave 3, Skeleton Crew,
Ok I'm hoping a lot here lol.

I agree. I do packaging design for a living. And all that copy is not mandatory. It’s lazy. They don’t want to spend the money to design a card back. They can easily use the same one for all. Even the UPCs are not unique. So when you search for a product by UPC, it can change by year of release.

I'm all for the Origins packaging, love it. But want to mention something related, I'm from Chile,so we get international packaging, and that includes the text-less minicomics. I get they can't include every language in tge planet, but come on, we can even understand the stories without words! The english written old minicomics were my first serious exposure to reading english back when I was a kid.

Those Retro figures are such a confused animal. From the fake wear and tear around the edges to the ridiculous sticker and then the back of the card design. They don't know if they're going one way or another. I remember 10 years ago when there was a trend with synthwave producers to artificially wear and crease their album art and I was very critical about how poor this is going to look over time. There's in inheirent laziness with the Retro line that I admire, as it doesn't stop me buying the figures semi regularly and I know it's maxmising their margin, which has to be extraordinary based on the effort the figures are given.
