I was going to dedicate this channel to video essays about games AND movies. My first movie video got copyright blocked and that kinda killed it for me. GAMES IT IS THEN! I talk about games, game mechanics, what makes a game good or bad, what games should have been, could have been, missed opportunities, and welcome surprises. But this is not a review site. There are enough of those. I post monthly, at best, because I put a ton of animation and editing into my essays. They are meant to be entertaining and thought-provoking. I invite you to subscribe. You'll get fewer than 12 notifications/year of new content.

Watch Dogs vs Watch Dogs 2, Which game watch dogged better?
How the heck has someone managed to avoid playing at least one JRPG this long? This is like finding a unicorn.
Mirrors edge was also good.
You’re really missing out by not playing monster hunter
Man I’m sold on your games recommendation, love the way you display games, game companies should hire for advertisement
Jedi Knights was revolutionary. At the time, something that advanced and fluid simply didn't exist.
Ah. A forgotten gem. Wish I got to experience at it's fullest. But alas, I only got to play a short demo. 🫤
couldnt keep watching after it was clear you had already decided to pepper your shit as much as possible. really the same kick but input with a direction is 4 different attacks? okay so in that case how comes skyrim only has "light attack, heavy attack, block"? why not "attacking to the left, attacking to the right, attacking to the rear, jumping and attacking" etc? i have no idea if any actual depth came from it but the second you started acting like directional input was revolutionary and spent 1 minute explaining how you can kick both to the left and to the right i closed the video. actual cringe. if you had any meaningful content you wouldnt feel a need to pretend its a big deal you can kick to the left and to the right, wow.
I remember reading a game review magazin back in the days and it sayed the comba system is OK. Such an underrated game in its time.
In one of your videos you talked about combat and it sounds like you like hack & slash games and if that`s the case. Here are some H&S games you can check out: Soulstice Valkyrie Elysium Wanted: Dead Etenights Stella Blade Project DT Project M Lost Soul Aside Phantom Hellcat Arise of Awakener Granblue Fantasy Relink Yasuke A Lost Descendent Shred & Tear: Explosive Kajun Phantom Blade SuperSimmer Astor: Blade of the Monolith Captain Blood Mightreya 13Z There are a lot more that are out there, H&S games are really fun to play and I'm so glad to see more of them. Shouts out to hack & slash games, they are making a comeback.
What throw back dude :D Konoko was my first nickname as a baby gamer !!! Also Remember Me has great melee combat and ofc SIFU.
I hated the first Deadspace
I'm a big fan of Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monk's and I see a bunch of similarities with Oni combat. There's light (🟥), heavy (🔴), up launching (🔺) attacks and grapple (R2) moves. Then there is variations of each move while running, jumping, grappling or when you press R1 for special "magic" moves. Also blocking, dodging, dashing, parrying, aerial combat are pretty decent mechanics (even though blocking is usually too strong against minions that rarely will break it). On top of that there are powerful combos to unblock, consumable strong weapons and a fair amount of Fatalities, Multalities and Brutalities. I just love everything about it, besides the fact that franchise is dead. I still dream about MK Shaolin Monks II or game with similar mechanics.
Peak Jedi Knight, movie battles II has never done me wrong
cant believe this game is on ' MyAbondonWare ' for free !
it certainly had more animations but was far from anything remotely similar to fun
With all due respect, I didn't get the point of all these comparations in the beginning. Like, almost every feature mentioned (if not all) existed before *Sleeping Dogs* . I mean *Shenmue* for example, covers pretty much all (the rest could be dumped on *Vice City* or something like that) I have no DOG in this topic tbh, just genuinely didn't get it.
Firstly, I haven't played the games you mentioned. Most commenters are surprised to learn that I haven't played *every* game. Nevertheless, Sleeping Dogs impressed me by having way to interact with the city outside of combat. Something games today still struggle with. Take Cyberpunk 2077, for example. Remove combat & boxing (because apparently boxing has to be in all CDPR games now) and what is left to do in Night City? It may be a triumph of modeling but it's lifeless for interactivity. Guess I'll go shoot something. But 12 years ago, Sleeping Dogs made a city that let/required the player interact with it in ways most games today can't match. That was my point.
@MediaKitGaming Fair, it's just in my personal experience if you really like the game, you're naturally trying to find something similar. And it's not like those I mentioned are hidden gems. The industry sucks balls indeed tho, I've stopped trying to find anything (of course there is some good stuff, but I can't be bothered ) XD
Omg i was like; how long does this go on XD. But yes VERY impressive for such an early game.
I enjoyed the combat system in legend of legaia.
I remember this being short af.
"the best melee combat game ever"? should it be a bait? learn a true shit Melee combat games before speaking like that
All i can say - The fact that Elden Ring scored 97 means people don't give a damn about masterpiece of a level design that Fromsoft cooked with DS1, they're ready to eat lazy ass open worlds.
Never heard of this game so I'm interested to give it a shot at some point. Although, I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone in the comments mentioning God Hand for the PS2. It's the first game that came to my mind when I think about melee combat outside of fighting games. The enemies gets harder the better you are at it that even a single mistake could cost you. It's extremely customizable too where you can set what moves you want your character to be able to do. Highly recommend it.
Well, actually… God Hand is the number 1 most commented game for this video. It gets mentioned A LOT! Thanks for chipping in.
I loved this game!!! Where’s the remake Sony/Bungie????
Thanks for bringing attention to this! did not know the game at all, and i'm definitely giving it a try
OMG I forgot this game existed. Downloading it now to play it again.
Marval Rivals have pretty good melle system
The disadvantage of the combat system is its timing, all the buttons must be pressed at the right time. If you do it at the wrong time, then you will always get something wrong and the enemies do not forgive mistakes and attack all at once. Also, there are few checkpoints on the levels and you will have to replay a bunch of enemies if you accidentally fall from a great height, for example. However, this game is quite unique and I still can't find anything similar.
This game was so hard.
I got very good at it… but you're not wrong.
thanks for the recommendation.
Directional attacks are NOT 4 different attacks. This is also the only physical game that I refunded in less than an hour, despite having to drive 30 minutes in each direction.
Urban chaos is a nice game with cool mechanics too.
I love Oni, but I hope the Skyrim comment was hyperbole and not ignorance...
OK, make the case that Skyrim has a good melee combat system. Light & heavy attack, shield block & bash. No dodge, no parry, no kicks, no jump attacks, no running attack, no slide, no slide attack, no combos. I will grant the 2-handed tree has a couple perks that actually introduce new moves. But it's not enough to lift the game out of its pathetic melee state. What did I miss?
Ninja Gaiden
dead to rights retribution ?
Nice
that backbreaker feels personal every time. I feel sorry for the enemy🤕
I just tried game last night thanks to this video and had a blast, thank you!
I can highly recommend Sifu aswell.
Absolver is just a refined version of this. Same for sifu. Both absolutely amazing melee combat games.
So you haven't played any From titles, Monster hunter titles, Dragons dogma 1/2, Dark Messiah, DMC titles, MGR Revengence. Not to take away from Oni, but there are plenty of "modern" games that specialize in exceptional melee combat
From doesn’t use directional combat like this, and their games would really come alive if they did. There isn’t much incentive to do anything other than R1. Charged R2 if you’re playing Elden Ring.
@Kamawan0 R1 for PvE maybe, but even then, you have variation on variation depending on your weapon. It's not 50 moves always available, but it's close to 50 "R1" divided. All that aside however, the flow of combat is what makes From games great: Sekiro proved this
That's a weird way to say God Hand.
Sounds like we need an Oni sequel. I remembered playing the demo and loved the game. Never got the full game, but the demo was fun to replay.
An interesting experiment? Yes. A successful one? ... Don't give me a game with a million mechanics, give me a game in which the devs actually balanced the whole thing so that those mechanics are useful, not just present. When I played Oni it was painfully unclear why would I spend time and effort on trying to push everything into battle if they aren't much more useful then the most simple combo.
Sleeping dogs deserves the shout out too
Nioh 2 definitely comes close with it's absurdly deep combat system
This game had "while standing up from crouch" moves. I've never seen this concept outside Tekken.
game of my childhood
today, i was decades old When i found this childhood gem of mine I HAD FORGOTTEN ITS NAME! anyway you earned a new subscriber
I dearly loved the Scream Cannon, which I nicknamed the Dream Gun. Shooting out that slow canister to release a dream spirit on an unwitting opponent was good creepy fun.
