    Not wrong but this applied to horses. The petrol engine had not been invented. For car drivers there is no law that forces you to drive on the left, it's just conventional. That said you have to drive with due consideration for other road users. So driving on the right is pretty dumb, but it does explain that overtaking on the left is NOT an offence.

    First of all, congratulations on passing your hiking test. Well done! I was a bit surprised about the Edelweiss badge - it is the best-known symbol of the Alps instead of Franconian Switzerland. By the way, did you know that edelweiss growing in the wild is very rare and difficult to find. Therefore it's a protected plant and picking a wild edelweiss if caught leads to quite severe fines.

    • @trailblazinpeppers
      @trailblazinpeppers 7 днів тому

      Thanks for watching! I had read that about the edelweiss flower. I have never seen one in the wild but it would be pretty neat to see one in person. The Edelweiss march can take place in any location as long as it meets the distance and elevation requirements. I would love to actually do the march in the Alps.

  • @aaronwalderslade

    You mount a horse on the left and that's why we drive on the left. That's also the reason motorcycles are mounted on the left. I had the exact same problem when first driving in France, my right wheels were almost in the ditch because I'm used to most of the car being on my left. Luckily branches rattled on my side and dust blew up to warn me before I went completely off the edge. It's funny that no one warns you of this when you drive in a foreign country. It must be very common. Another thing I see all the time is people who drive on the left always want to do any kind of parking manoeuvre clockwise, and people who drive on the right want to rotate the vehicle anti clockwise. It doesn't work, and can put you in a dangerous position, easily ending up on the wrong side of the road. When driving on the left, try to get used to the idea of turning the car around clockwise. The other thing I find useful to focus on is the right turn (if driving in UK). Be conscious of the need to go forward and *then* right. I noticed here you cut the corner on your very first right turn. You cannot afford to cut corners in the UK, as junctions are too tight. My preference is to drive on my usual side of the car, regardless of what side of the road I'm on. I drove a right hand drive truck through France with no difficulties. Trucks do have seven mirrors though!

    Just a tip, for anyone driving on the 'wrong' side, however experienced. When you make the first junction of the day, pause, then talk yourself through it. It kept me safe for 20 years or so driving though France and Spain.

    Actually, I think you both did well. (Flat tire excepted) I've driven in the UK for years (we're from Boston, MA and if you can drive there you can drive anywhere) When I first did it 35 years ago I felt all the things you both did and I was amazed at how quickly I got used to it as you did. The trouble with driving in places like Scotland is that that natural beauty is VERY distracting. I'd like to do another driving trip but my wife thinks I might be too old. What makes me angry is I think she may be right. Anyway, happy travels.

    Just came back from driving in the Highlands for the first time. I agree with a lot that was said, especially about the backroads (4:56). Skinny roads, tight turns, blind summits - all in a mostly 60mph speed limit = craziness :) Roundabouts are no big deal, in fact they are easy and much safer than intersections. If you do this just try and relax, don't speed and don't get that far to the left (I scraped my left tires a few times on the curb). Soon you'll get used to it all and by the end of the trip it wasn't a big deal. Great video, thanks for posting!

    I went to Canada a few years back and used the pedestrian crossing with lights. I was puzzled that a lot of cars were continuing on even when the lights were at red for stop and I was crossing road. I don't know if cars are still allowed to go on red in Canada or not at a pedestrian but is not the case in the UK. I don't know about USA. Is just a case that if you are used to driving on right then driving on left will be strange. Like I was in Canada found strange that cars were driving on right so I had to be careful when crossing roads.

      @trailblazinpeppers 15 днів тому
