TempoKEY K25 - Gear Review and Tutorial
Synido reached out to me again offered me their K25 unit in exchange for an honest video review so here it is. The K25 is a combination of a MIDI controller and keyboard. I'm most excited by the possibilities of the Rotary Knobs for controlling amplifiers in AmpliTube 5.
They did not get to review this video in advance or dictate any portion of the review. I got the keyboard for free in exchange for reviewing it.
Again like the Z-1 P64 I reviewed I was pleasantly surprised by both the construction quality and the usefulness of this device. If you’ve ever wanted to control the knobs on your pedal and amp simulations with rotary knobs you are going to be interested.

      The AmpliTube 5 plugins should work with Ableton, although I've never done it. The closest I have to a video on this uses a different DAW - Reaper. The first two minutes of the following video shows how to use AT5 as a plug-in inside Reaper. The initial install of Reaper on macOS automatically put the AU and VST, VST3 plug ins in the folder where Reaper automatically found them so there was no additional installation required. ua-cam.com/video/r_PBgsv3IIE/v-deo.html

    Hi Tom loving your AT5 videos it seems you can work out tricky solutions to a problem, so is it possible to add an effect to a portion of a recording only and not have it on for the whole track. I only have the standalone version? 👍

    • @UncleTodMusic
      @UncleTodMusic Місяць тому

      Hi - Thanks for watching! AT5 is just recording your raw DI signal and then processing it with whatever you have in your gear chain. I don't know how to directly do what you want in a single track. You could use two tracks for this. Split your original recording (⌥X or right click and choose Split) so you have a movable piece for every section where you want the pedal effect. If you recorded to a click you can leave snap to grid on. Otherwise turn it off and zoom way in to get accurate cuts Move all those pieces to track two. It might be easier to ping-pong split so you can use the edit cursor's red line as a guide for moving pieces. Make one split at start of where pedal effect goes. Move the piece to the right to track 2. On track 2 move the edit cursor to where effect should end, split again, and move the material to the right back to track 1. Rinse and repeat. Make sure both tracks have AmpliTube turned on. If your happy with the results you could export both tracks. Delete the original parts, drag back the exported wav file into track one and turn OFF AmpliTube for that track. Now you have the remaining 7 tracks to use. Depending on what you are doing you might want to consider a more capable Digital Audio Workstation. I like Reaper. You can try it out for free (indefinitely I think) but it's not free. They do want you to pay $60 for a personal license. Well worth supporting them for how great the product is. It supports AT5 as a plug-in. There you can use "automations" to turn on and off effects. There is a LOT to Reaper so there is a learning curve. I found it time well spent as I used it for voice over on my Pluralsight courses and on UA-cam and I'm really enjoying it for use while practicing to backing tracks. I have a video where I talk about that and some resources I found valuable for learning Reaper. ua-cam.com/video/V2Ge8J6knWs/v-deo.html

I would suggest both starting a tech support ticket with IK MultiMedia and/or taking a look at their forums forum.ikmultimedia.com - I would suggest in both cases that you provide as much information as you can. The computer type (Mac PC, other), the OS version, the AmpliTube version. If it's a custom Windows machine maybe things like the video card, or GPU in use.

    It sounds like every time you create a new track with a new amp it plays back all the tracks with your latest amp selection. Am I wrong or is there a way to use different amp/tones for each track?

    • @UncleTodMusic
      @UncleTodMusic Місяць тому

      You should be able to use 8 different gear chains simultaneously on 8 different tracks. AT5 records your DI (raw) signal so if you change the Amp afterward for a GIVEN track it will play with the new amp. Try this: set up track 1 with an amp and record something. Copy and paste what you've recorded to track 2. Turn on AT5 for track 2, change to the gear chain view. Set up a different gear chain. Now go back to the recorder view. Solo track 1 and play back what you recorded. The turn off Solo for track 1 and turn on solo for track 2 and hit play again. You should hear the two different gear chains. When you are playing your guitar you should be hearing only the gear chain for the track that is armed for recording (i.e. the R is red in the recorder and there is a red dot next to the track number in the track selector area) . If you have more than one track in record mode then you will hear all the tracks that are in record mode. Unlike other DAWs I have used there is no separate "monitor" feature. You automatically monitor any tracks in record mode.

      Not that I know of. I'm on macOS, and as an experiment I just set the tempo to 133 and dragged in a song and it was 150+ measures long. Then I positioned the red record head at measure 160 and hit record and it recorded. I would think moving the record head and hitting record would work for you but if not, try dragging a long wav or mp3 file into an unused track and see if it gets cut off or extends your project. If you still have problems you might try the IKM forums but provide as much info about the problem as you can, including what OS your are using. forum.ikmultimedia.com

      This video was really about solving a particular problem. If you haven't already done so, watch the video on using AmpliTube inside GarageBand. The link below starts right where I check the Finder to see that the component is in the expected place for GarageBand. In GB you shouldn't have to worry about the VST or VST3 versions just the .component one. My first suggestion is to start with the Amps template in GarageBand and then try to convert any track to use AmpliTube. If that doesn't work here are some more things you can try. If it still doesn't work, make sure in the GarageBand settings under Audio/MIDI you have "Enable Audio Units" selected. Also you can only use it on an Audio Track (hence starting with the Amps template), it won't show for a software instrument track. If that doesn't work check out this thread discussions.apple.com/thread/806349?answerId=3857128022&sortBy=rank#3857128022 which near the end talks about how to force GarageBand to rescan for AUs. That library folder is hidden by default. My preferred way to get there is to hold down the option ⌥ key and click on the Finder's `Go` menu and select `Library` Good Luck. Let me know here if anything helps or if you solve this yourself. ua-cam.com/video/F47Z4nu9DOI/v-deo.html

However, I did some quick research and came across this video that talks about how you use the channel rack for VST instruments and it's different from using other plugins. The link is right before he talks about adding a VST plugin. In reaper the plugins end up in the `Developer` area under `IK Multimedia` and it is named `VST3: AmpliTube 5` ua-cam.com/video/pDIsEZsalAo/v-deo.html

    Just leave the Gain on yr interface input on Zero and whack up the input slider of AT.I use from 13 to full 15. Great dynamics too. Adjust the Output Slider to taste.For each sound.

    • @UncleTodMusic
      @UncleTodMusic Місяць тому

      Got me wondering just how much gain do I get out of the interface and it seems like when cranked it's about +12 dB, and I only use about +8 so the input slider does have more than enough range. I guess the only downside would be if I found an amp that needed more than +15 db but then I suppose the gain on the amp can likely make up for any lack in input signal. On the few presets I tried, I couldn't hear any difference in turning down my USB interface gain to 0 and adding 8 on the slider.

    • @StratsRUs
      @StratsRUs Місяць тому

      @UncleTodMusic Because of Amplitube not having disclosed the important info, I decided to push the slider to 12-15 ...This will change with every other setting !! But I am happy with this. With Softube I push the input slider a similar amount. ZERO at the interface. Works just right. Companies should disclose what they know.

      I should have been clearer. The Axe IO is the USB interface I plug both my guitar and my pedalboard into. So my pedalboard sends MIDI to my axe IO interface which sends it to my computer. You should see a differently named device that reflects the name of the device you use to get MIDI to your computer.

    How do you get rid of the loud feedback i did the same thing as you😢

    • @UncleTodMusic
      @UncleTodMusic 2 місяці тому

      When I selected the proper mic it went away. Surprisingly muting the mac speakers doesn't work. Muting the built-in microphone does work (Settings-Sound→Input tab drag the volume to zero). Dragging the output slider (bottom right) or mixer output slider in AT5 down to ∞ works too. I have this as a preset on my pedal board! Then if it happens and I still have power to my pedal board I can silence it by selecting that preset. I also created an AppleScript tied to F13 on my keyboard. If I get feedback, I hit F13 and the script sets the mic input volume to 0. medium.com/macoclock/how-in-the-bleep-do-i-mute-my-mic-anywhere-on-macos-d2fa1185b13

      Sorry to hear. I do have a video on troubleshooting usb interfaces but the iRig is so simple some of the tips won’t apply. Troubleshooting Your Guitar USB Interface (and Speakers) ua-cam.com/video/6_IJpPNokAE/v-deo.html

    Cool video Uncle Tod. Fellow UA-camr "Ed S" has posted a lot on this subject. I mention Ed S on here because he has compiled a table of different interfaces and their actual vs indicated input levels/sensitivity. Can be quite an eye opener. 👍

    There's one big thing that changing Min and Max will do which is if you want to knock one effect off whilst turning another on. In my live patch I have a pedal that swaps out chorus for phaser (both not needed simultaneously) and it's done this way. Ideally AmpliTube would eventually support scenes. It would make things a lot easier!

      Nice. The longer I use AT5 the more uses I have found for Min/Max - I reverse them a lot and similar to you but I've never used them to ping-pong between two effects. I now use expression pedals to control stomp effects on/off or the knobs and sometimes reversing one knob value while turning another up has been nice. I've even found other values of the "Curve" setting useful in certain situations.

    is it possible to change amplitube preset within reaper via a midi foot controller?

    • @UncleTodMusic
      @UncleTodMusic 2 місяці тому

      I haven't done it. I did find a video that shows how to send program change messages in MIDI but it's not using a foot controller it's just using a midi track and sending a PC change message at a particular point. I haven't tried to do this but in case it helps you here's the link starting at about the 2 min mark - ua-cam.com/video/216O6xGWCxU/v-deo.html

    Hello I am having issues with Amplitube 5 and not being able to save the presets as a TXP file. It looks like it saves it as a AT5 file only. I am using Windows 10 .

      I'll preface with the fact that I'm pretty new to Tonex and I'm not positive what you are trying to do. However, my understanding is that AT5 chains can't be used in TONEX so you wouldn’t (shouldn't?) be able to save them as Tonex Preset Files (txp). One reason for this would be the warning I called out in the manual; time-based effects aren't supported in Tonex. If you had those in an AT5 chain and saved it as a tonex preset and loaded it what would one expect to happen? Elsewhere I have read that since tonex presets get loaded into the Tonex pedal you can't save AT5 chains as Tonex presets because the pedal doesn't have the processing power of your laptop to turn the AT5 chain into analog audio. If I'm off base and you just want to tweak a Tonex Model and save that preset then I think you just have to do that from the Tonex software not the AT5 software.

    Damn you Todd, you got me hooked on amplitube again. jumped on biasfx 2 over a year ago, didn't have the patience to deal with the kludgy interface of AT5. looks like it's improved, still has a way to go but headed in the right direction.. Tonet is amazing !! thanks again, going through your playlist on UA-cam ✌️

      LOL, yeah, I'm hoping they fix some obvious flaws in AT6 but I do like how this sounds. Just did the most recent episode today where I try to clear up some confusion over IK's use of Input 1 and Input 2 when they really mean Left and Right.
