    I read 1Q84 and found it very interesting..hated parts of it but the story keeps you hooked. Now I need cozy stories so Excellent Women suited me to a T. I am now tackling Moby Dick and it is a tough read....I will read a cost book in between moby.

    I just read Excellent Women based on your recommendation and I loved it. I am now reading Crampton Hodnet. As I also loved Middlemarch I just ordered South Riding. I prefer chunky books and wished Barbara Pym wrote chunkier. And Ladies of the Club is a really good book...another Middlemarch via American 1860s.

    Yay Hooked!! Thanks for the mention, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, too. I also had a strong reading month in August. Besides Hooked, I loved Maria: A Novel of Maria von Trapp by Michelle Moran, Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson, Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent by Judi Dench, and All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. Oh, and The Shell Seekers, of course! I read Sipsworth a few months ago and loved that, too! 🙂

    Jen! Last night a book-tuber showed up here. Her channel is: Jane Reads and she looks just like you! Her haircut! I did not click on. Don't like copycats. Very obvious. I ordered and received Distilled Genious. I was supposed to get it the next day, but the Amazon driver left it in our bldg. "library". Didn't find d it for 2 days😑 Here's a good quote for you by Mary Oliver " What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" Found it in my personal Quote Journal. Betty Bao Lord’s book is right up my alley. Did you ever read Kluger’s “ Last Days of Summer”? It’s also a coming of age story, set in 1940’s Brooklyn and features a baseball hero, this time Charlie Banks, not Jackie Robinson. Laugh-out-loud funny but also heartwarming, I’ll admit I shed some tears reading this one. I’ll look for Shirley Temple Wong! 😊

      @@teriseeley6286 I'll have to look into The Girl of the Limberlost! The Limberlost Swamp is in Indiana. The story of Freckles is set in Indiana. There is also a Limberlost Forest, but that is in Canada. The Wikipedia entry on the Limberlost Swamp has some interesting information about the swamp as well as more information about Gene Stratton-Porter.

    What a great reading theme for the month! You can not go wrong with Elizabeth VonArnim or Barbara Pym, 2 favorite authors of mine. Von Arnim's The Benfactress is very witty as usual. I usually think of spinsters as a more British thing, but for an American spinster, I was thinking Alexandra Bergson from O Pioneers? Sarah Orne Jewett's Country of the Pointed Firs and A Country Doctor also both feature strong female leads who live by their own code.

    I finally diverged from you on a book that you liked. I was disappointed in it and found it a slog. I absolutely loved A Man Called Ove however.And I enjoy books with older protagonists, or quirky ones. (Although did you realize Ove was 59 in that book?).

    • @jensreadinglife
      @jensreadinglife 2 дні тому

      Ove was only 59???? How did I not remember that? 😂 I think there will always be books that even kindred spirit book friends will disagree on. And sometimes it's all about timing with a book! Have you read All the Lonely People by Mike Gayle? Another good book with an older protagonist.

    Hi Jen, I enjoyed the lovely Nora. So interesting. I have some suggestions. Right now I am reading Miss Willy by Joyce Carol Oats, which is about a teacher in a very primitive situation in the Appalachian hills. I believe it might be similar to Christie. So good! And of course the wonderful Miss Read books! You can’t go wrong there! So I love this topic even though I didn’t set out to read it. 😊😊😊 Thank you!

    Spoiler alert: Tallboy was the drug gang contact for the ad agency in Murder Must Advertise. Once Lord Peter exposes him, he walks out of his apartment, knowing the gang will kill him on his way home, but he allows himself to be killed to protect his family.

    • @jensreadinglife
      @jensreadinglife 3 дні тому

      I thought Tallboy was just one of the middlemen not the head honcho? He killed Dean and that’s why Wimsey lets him go for the gang to deal with. He seemed to weak to be the head honcho. Or else I seriously missed something while reading (entirely possible!).
