Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Fuel Bowl Replacement - Real time removal and Installation
In this video, I am removing my fuel bowl from my 94.5 model truck and installing a newer style 96 fuel bowl. After 280,000 the factory fuel bowl had a small leak in the bottom of it. I did my research to check the interchangeability between years and I purchased the new one from Swag diesel.
Overall, the most difficult part of this job is getting to the hose clamps. If you have new hoses and clamps, don’t be afraid to cut the lines mainly the lower fuel bowl to fuel pump and the upper fuel bowl to fuel pump hose.
I’ve had the pump and bowl out before and when I reassembled, I put all of the hose clamps easy to get to, highly recommend that!
Don’t be afraid to send a message. If you have any questions, the job looks daunting at first, but it’s quite smooth, you got this!

The installation instructions that came with my #38826 set from Amazon says I also need a Locking Hub Spindle Nut Conversion Kit #32721 ($112). My truck is a 2000 F250 7.3. You don't mention this in your video. Before I tear into it, do I really need this kit? Probably also need the special spindle nut socket?
@@johndrake-p3m interesting, 99-05 should be the same axle. I do remember reading something about the conversion kit but I don’t believe it was necessary for this model!
Thanks for the reply. Guess I'll find out for sure when I tear into it.

Universal mount? Thank you.
sounds good
Great video. Right at the end he asks the question . . "How did Ford miss the opportunity to include this system". So, truth is THEY DID NOT. International designed the system to be used that way but Ford engineers changed it in the interest of SAFETY. Notice just how close that fuel line is to that turbo! Same thing with the oil crossover mod. Even a metal oil crossover could break loose in an accident starting a horrendous fire. Same issue with diesel fuel. I don't care what those lines are made of, eventually it will wear and become compromised.
Also. . . this motor was NOT really designed for road vehicles (as I have been told). It was the choice for Ford because Dodge had beaten ford to Cummins.
Hey, I’ve been a mechanic for a long time just not a diesel mechanic but I have a 73 have had it for about five years over the past couple years. I’ve needed to plug it in in order to start it if it sits I’ve replaced a lot of stuff in it rebuilt all the things I’m aiming towards injectors cause I replace glow plugs glow plug relay the whole 9 yards. I’m just trying to see why I need to plug it in and it runs like crap now all the time except for on highway speeds, I’m just trying to see if you have any answers for the needs a block heater after sitting for 4 to 5 hours no matter what temperature I live in Florida so it’s hot anyway, if you have any ideas, I am leaning towards injectors and I’m going to replace them all plus the truck has 400,000 miles on it and they’re the original injectors Anyway if you have any info on this I ran into it before please let me know I do love my 73 so I don’t wanna get rid of it.
Oh, and just to add that it needs more than three hours of being plugged in to warm it up enough to get it to fire up. If not, it’ll just keep turning over till either the starter dies or the batteries whatever happens first lately it’s been starters going out on it, so I Just don’t understand and there’s not a whole Lotta videos on this that I have found and I’ve been looking for it for a while. I’ve been planning on putting out my own video on it just seeing if you have any comment on it. Thanks. Hopefully you’re still doing this.
@@FarmerJoe772 hey there, brother, definitely injectors. I have another video on here that describes that same issue, which is why I replaced these injectors in the first place. Same thing, it would not start without the block heater plugged in and the injectors warm. Every now and then it would stall when I come up to a light but like you said highway speeds beautiful talk to engineer and they said that 200,000 miles the injectors fire over 1 trillion times. They work hard 400,000 is a good run on a original set. I’m leaning towards needing injectors.
@@bryanbuilt360 yeah, highway speed is great but other than that it runs like the worst it’s ever run and it’s getting worse. It doesn’t really smoke a whole lot but it does when you ramp on it I do have an upgraded turbo in it and an upgraded high pressure oil pump and slightly upgraded fuel system I wanted to upgrade injectors to because every time something breaks I go with a step above stock just because I want a little more more power but I leave the programmer that’s on it at a low level all the time because I don’t wanna push the limits of the block even though I’ve heard they can manage them good amount of power. I was kind of getting to the fact that it would be that but I’ve gotten a whole Lotta IP ours and I see peas trying to see if that was what was causing the issues , if you put a link to the video so I could just watch it that be great and thanks for replying to me so fast
Also, since I got rid of my mechanic shop that I had for a while, I also got rid of my scan tool do the fact that I was still making payments at the time from Snap On and just didn’t feel like paying for it now I wish I had it, but what I found out is, it’s not the greatest at diagnosing this issue do to you can’t go in and separate each injector like you can on like a 6.0 or the newer trucks Like I said by owning diesels, I’m slowly becoming a diesel mechanic lol but since it’s more of a hobby than anything and it’s my Daly driver and work truck and I do construction so anyway I do appreciate the help. I just didn’t want to go and spend the money on injectors and it turns out it not be injectors. I’m pretty sure everybody feels the same cause it’s not like they’re cheap for these trucks even with it being a very old truck nowadays
@@FarmerJoe772 so the crazy thing with my issue was that even with a scan tool hooked up, everything was showing as functioning properly, because the solenoids on the injectors were fine. What had happened is some of them had failed internally over years of use and couldn’t build pressure. basically I used the temp gun on the manifold to diagnose the issue at first start up. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/jhOjLdb0mPs/v-deo.htmlsi=1Bi1_8wuP12ErCqB
Thank you for this information. Is there an easy way to determine if my oil leak is coming from this Vacuum pump vs my Upper Oil pan? I've got a terrible leak I need to get fixed ASAP as I need my truck for a week long trip in a few days.
@@rustylimbo hey brother, I usually like to diagnose oil leaks with a uv dye. That way I can pinpoint the leak and potentially any other leaks. Here’s a link to another video lmk if you have any other questions. ua-cam.com/video/_P1PAGAT6Ag/v-deo.htmlsi=2qDOiMrHwENL78_n

@@bryanbuilt360appreciate it, were you able to Snug up on the vacuum pump bolts without having to take the serpentine belt and bracket off? Maybe from underneath? I was going to climb under today and see, so thought I'd ask.
@@rustylimbo just the top bolts, then it started leaking worse two days later. When I dug into it the bottom ones came out without a wrench. I didn’t try hard enough to get to them, but I’m also of the school that if I have to pull something to only tighten them, might as well do the gasket. :/

Thank you very much, just completed my gasket replacement. Your video made it possible for me to approach this job and complete it with confidence. 👍 The best video for this task on UA-cam!
@@South-by-Northeast143 glad you found it helpful! Was there Anything else you did differently or helpful tips?
Thank you for showing the line up of the tools you used at the beginning of the video. I found that to be very helpful. I struggled this morning trying to remove the two bottom bolts on the fan mount bracket. I was not successful in part due to not having a flexible-head or a battery-powered ratchet wrench. The very limited access to those bolts made it difficult to get my XXL size hands in position to place the sockets and standard ratchet wrench on the six-sided bolt heads. When you mentioned that you wished you had brought your twelve-point sockets to make it easier to place the 13 mm socket on the fan mount bracket bolt heads, I was stunned that I didn’t think of that solution earlier today. Last but not least, I thought about disconnecting one end of the steering stabilizer to create more access to the bottom fan bracket bolts, but I was hesitant to do it because I had never done that before. So, I put the job on hold and started watching more videos about the fix for a vacuum pump leak. I’m very thankful that you invested the time and effort to make this video; it has been a great benefit to me!
@@chrisglennon3801 glad you found it helpful, that’s actually a good idea with the steering stabilizer. Just have to make sure it all goes back in the same place. When you get back to it let us know what you ended up doing so we all can learn!
Thanks for the video, im about to tackle this. Question, did your truck ever make any crazy “tones” prior to this. Not kidding, it sounds like dial up internet coming from my dash.
@@EdcGuru03 no problem, glad you found it helpful. The main thing you forgot to tell us.What are the torque values on all of them bolts?Because the whole problem of this that everybody says is Ford didn't Torch them correctly and did not use lock to the same question.I ask in the beginning what are the torque values
89lft
I suspect that the previous poster meant to say 89 INCH POUNDS / 10 Newton Meters for the vacuum pump bolts!!! Eighty-nine lbs. ft. of torque will break those tiny bolts for certain. I have read in the comments left on videos posted by other creators on this topic that thirty-five (35) lbs ft of torque is a safe torque value for the fan mount bracket.
Great vid! Most appreciated.
That’s me!!!
I have a 97 F350 and fought leaks in the valley for months . Turned out it was coming from the fuel pump. After I replaced the pump the leak returned. I did an autopsy and the cause was the way the diaphragm was swaged to the actuator shaft so the atmosphere side would fill with diesel and pump out of the vent holes. I replaced the mechanical pump with an electric pump with filters on the frame and haven't had any diesel leaks for years. So many of the replacement parts are inferior. Same with the mechanical vacuum pump.
@@oskarbud525 you’re absolutely right. I did the fuel pump a few weeks prior to this. I guess I got a good one 😂 I have been seeing and reading a “new wave” of Motorcraft parts that are inferior too. We’re in for some wild times. 🤦🏼♂️ Appreciate the comments, keep em on the road 😎

Good job. Doesn't it drive you nuts that the bad injector didn't fail the contribution test. I had a similar problem, black smoke, no power, couldn't get over 1600 hpop psi. Lucky for me the cylinder that failed the contribution test was the bad injector (buzz test sounded off on that cyl too). Changed all the o rings on that side and put in an old injector for now. Smoke is gone, psi & power is back. I suspect it was stuck open. Next time I'll also check the injector tip for cracks. Interesting that you had black then white smoke.
Sure does sound like one of the injectors was stuck open. Probably on the oil side. Did you ever run it with the valve cover open to see what was coming out of the spout? Appreciate your comments. I have another injector video when I replaced the ones and diagnosing that was a nightmare!
After new glow plugs my cylinder #1 is saying it has an open circuit…I wonder if I bumped the injector solenoid clip off when reinstalling the valve cover. Now I have to check. I will check continuity first and buzz test.
Ahhh haaa. Definitely start with checking the number one before pulling the valve cover. If you see zero changes in multimeter than chances are it became disconnected. Way to isolate and Identifyn
Also, check out my other injector video with the smoke plume, it will show you that testing!
Thank you to this info. Dumb question: How are you cleaning the valve cover wiring harness connector? Wipe off oil and compressed air? Any other methods? I’m trying to solve a P1271 code for cylinder #1.
No problem dude, keep us all updated here with questions and wins! Generally I like to use a contact cleaner or electric motor cleaner. CRC makes it and is usually in stock at AutoZone or Napa. It sprays in and evaporates. Compressed air works well but can leave a little film. I wouldn’t recommend brake clean, it will warp and damage the rubber seals for plug connections. What year and mileage is the truck? Ever had injectors before?
