What is Meshtastic?
Meshtastic® is a project that lets you use inexpensive LoRa radios as a long range off-grid communicator for areas without reliable cellular service. These radios are great for hiking, skiing, paragliding - essentially any use-case where you don't have reliable internet access. Each member of the mesh can send and view text messages and enable optional GPS based location features.

How can I add a keyboard to a rak19007 base and a 4631 core? I’m trying to make it standalone
Is it possible to make the rak6031 standalone?
No plugin for wintak?
There's no official plugin for WinTak. You can check out OpenTAKServer, there's a recent addition called the "TAK Meshtastic Gateway" which apparently supports ATAK, WinTAK, and iTAK. Looks like a neat project, but just know that is not affiliated with Meshtastic.
@@Meshtastic Is there any chances for you to work on and official plugin for wintak or not? Just to know if I Need to focus on something else.
Can I swap the pi for a Jetson Orin?
Without some modifications, likely no. You could probably make it work assuming you double check pin assignments and such. Feel free to join the discord and pop by the #linux-native channel. The kind folks there, including Jonathan, can help you out.
1st comment Nice 👍🏼 was there at thier booth end of last day of OpenSauce 👍🏼👍🏼 buy yourself some mesh it's definitely cool , ill be setting up 2 nodes and a 3rd kept with me soon ❤
I got one a couple days ago
NMEA ONLY outputs GPS data; TEXTMSG Only outputs incoming messages. Other settings output nothing.
So this is where the Meshtastic Demo for the T-Watch S3 is! I appreciate you for co-creating a beautiful future 🙏
Awesome.
I don't get it. what is TAC? What is ATAC? What value does it add to Meshtastic, as this video only shows sending text messages, which Meshtastic already provides out of the box. Is it relevant for people outside of the USA (I guess ATAC is US American because of the domain name shown)?
ATAK is a suite of software that allows for collaboration over geography, the Meshtastic plugin allows Mesh information to integrate into it. For more information on ATAK check out www.civtak.org/atak-about/ and for the Meshtastic plugin meshtastic.org/docs/software/integrations/integrations-atak-plugin/
Too cool! Meshtastic breaking out!!! #NOTABOMB!! Also dang, i need a coil gun lol. Keep up the great work guys. Excellent presentation.
visited probably buying a few nodes to setup now ☺️
This kind of crap is why meshtastic devices are completely out of stock everywhere all the time for people who could use them productively.
Depending on which device you're looking to buy, there are multiple places that have stock available (and have had it). Also, what someone does with their Meshtastic device should be up to them, no? If you need any help finding stock, be sure to join the discord and we can point you in the right direction. :)
Find SaveitforParts he needs help setting up his node(s). He should have a booth about his YT channel.
I read a comment mentioning this somewhere a couple of days ago - and I was expecting it to be a coil gun that fires (magnetic) nodes into hard to access locations (like LED Throwies) - but this is cool too :)
Nye they set a firework off and now this. How To wepponise and get meshtastic banned. Super dumb.
Coil Guns are used as demonstration and learning platforms for students. It's a very common stepping stone to get into power electronics and frequently demonstrated at science fairs. www.instructables.com/GaussGun-Coil-Gun-Electronics-and-Engineering-Proj/
@@Meshtastic it still shows it can be used to trigger something bad just like the firework did, its a bad choice) . (Our reaction is probably alien to Ameericans as America has normalised guns.)
Guys, this is just the wrong way to do a demo for public consumption. You're not helping the cause by highlighting its use as a trigger for weapons.

is part of iot. Imagine that we can use for irigations , etc
This is the most European type of comment I’ve ever seen💀
This is the most European comment ever😂
I am very new to the mechtastic ecosphere. please explain what just happened and why I should be stoked. I don't want to be annoying or rude. I just don't get it.
Hey there! You're not being annoying at all, don't worry! In the video, they used Meshtastic nodes to wirelessly trigger a coil gun from a distance. Coil guns are cool because they're often used in science and engineering projects-like at science fairs-to demonstrate power electronics concepts. It shows how Meshtastic can be used for remote control without internet or cellular networks. Pretty neat, right?
Sweet a remote, Um uh..... Yeah.
yoooo what kind of module / hardware does the receiving device have to have (apart from a LoRa chip obvs) for this and what kind of outputs does this generate? Can this be used to activate for example servo motors via PWM signal?
It sounded as though they're simply using a GPIO pin and the external notification module to toggle something on a secondary device.
As the person who built it: it was just a simple GPIO pin that toggled on receipt of a message. To do more than that would probably require the notification module to do things based on message content (hint hint @meshtastic :P ) and then signal a different microcontroller to change the PWM signal accordingly. It would be kind of fun to be able to remotely dial in a high/medium/low power shot, maybe next year.
@@dpidcoe hell ye boi thank you! You could probably program in some kind of command line logic so that when you have a bunch of people using that meshtastic network they can all remotely control a device in such a way. Doesn't have to be a coil gun obviously, but maybe an AC unit or a light switch.
This is kind of what I use meshtastic for, but way less dangerous.
@@XRingerthe same way garage door openers and washer and dryer timers are a thing of the past?
Awesome explanation, esp with some San Miguel :P
Thank you for the kind words:)
@@Meshtastic of course! I’ve just joined “the movement” (located in WA) and loving every bit of it! 😊
Have you made it so you can turn lora on and off to save battery life?.. .looking good though a major improvement
No, the LoRa radio is not turned off. The MCU can be placed into a sleep state depending on role/settings, but the radio will remain active and will wake the MCU when it starts to hear a message.
This works great on my raspi 4. I tried it on the Raspi 5 but get the debug output error "meshtasticd.service failed to find sx1262 radio". Any ideas what the problem might be ? I did change the uart parameter for Raspi 5 but that is for gps not the sx1262.
Did you complete these steps? meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices/linux-native-hardware/#hardware-interfaces
@@Meshtastic Yes I did and I checked the config.txt afterwards to ensure that the changes had been applied. I also edited the config.yaml as instructed.
@@Meshtastic I get the debug error: Warning, cannot claim pin GPIO20St16invalid_argument No I2C device configured, skipping. My config.yaml contains Lora: Module: sx1262 # Waveshare SX126X XXXM DIO2_AS_RF_SWITCH: true CS: 21 IRQ: 16 Busy: 20 Reset: 18
What if every time I try traceroute I get nothing back? What am I doing wrong?
Are you able to communicate with the device you are trying to trace route? You might be in a position where your device can receive from that node but your messages to them are having trouble getting there.
i did range testing with my Lilygo t-deck and my heltec v3, i didn't even get 200 feet away. it was line of site, i don't get it. i live in the county setting. no hills flat open ground. Line of site not even a block away. what am i doing wrong. didn't hardly got out of the driveway. ant ideas ?
I would recommend joining the discord and posting your issue as well as your full setup. Folks can get you sorted. There's a lot of variables involved.
That's great. What kind of user i/o does it provide ? Command line or maybe a web interface ? Would like to see this. Would also like to get packet analysis software like an interface to eg. Wireshark ?
You can use any of the existing clients that has TCP connection such as the web interface or the network management client. You can also emulate the existing screen (like you'd see on the device) and it supports mouse+keyboard. Additionally, we have a new GUI that's being developed which will also offer linux native support including mouse + keyboard.
@Meshtastic thanks for your reply. I got it working. I miss the ability to be able to traceroute to a node. Is there any way of doing that ?
Thank you so much for your video. It's well explained so that everyone can do this install. And you are so right about the antenna. Try and do this without an antenna and you'll cook some of your hardware. Again, Thanks!
Is there a way to _"breadboard"_ a _Meshtastic_ system? IOW, does the Meshtastic firmware allow for different transceiver chips, different GPS receivers, etc. (perhaps with different pinouts)? Is there a Meshtastic *library* for the Arduino IDE (similar to the *_LoRa_* library)? If possible, I would like the option to modify the message payload, such as to include temperature, barometric pressure, or some other sensor data into a customized Meshtastic message.
It's possible but might require some work, unless you're using an existing DIY variant as a footprint (github.com/meshtastic/firmware/tree/master/variants/diy). If you're using hardware that's already supported it's just a matter of creating your own variant with the necessary pin info etc. There is a Meshtastic library for Arduino but it is not the firmware, it's more of a driver for interfacing with Meshtastic nodes over WiFi and Serial connections (github.com/meshtastic/Meshtastic-arduino).
17:00 counterpose will help. Easy to add to the SMA since it is is bare metall 18:00 those antennas can be called collinear antenna. It makes top and bottom flat and receives on the horizontal plane as you explained. We use collinear antennas on marine VHF antennas. More gain bigger antenna it is. You can make it out of coax cable. Many elements soldered together. And it has its own ground plane as I understand it.
set up video?
Spoilers :)
@@Meshtastic I was having a problem and fixed it by flashing to the watch with google chrome. Kinda wish I could still use it as a watch.
Is there a version of atak similar programs that aren't gov run?
Possibly, but whether they're useful/usable is another thing. A lot of "alternatives" still use TAK Server on the backend too.
What is the source of the position data? I’m assuming it’s whatever the device, such as a phone, provides through its API.
Correct, the data comes from whatever position source you are using for that device.
How does the router get preference? i.e. how do the other nodes know NOT to repeat it? Do they just wait to see if they hear the message again from the router?
It's an algorithm based on time and the signal to nose ratio.
Any known state wide networks in the USA?
I don't know of any state-wide, but there are quite a few larger metropolitan area networks. You can check out the local groups for more info, some have websites/discords etc. meshtastic.org/docs/community/local-groups/
soooo 1. use LONG SLOW (right???) 2. sx1262 with option "more power!!!" 3. better antenna 4. ... on the mast?
If you're specific use-case calls for long slow, yes. Otherwise sticking with Long Fast is usually fine. We've seen some pretty great distances on it. The rest look good too.
Coool I want them :)
Excited for marker support. This is one thing that plugins like HAMMER and Plugnix have over Meshtastic when it comes to sending data between EUDs over radio.
This is awesome
i want that Philippine Beer.
Will this work with iOS?
No, ATAK is Android only. There is no iTAK support currently.
Antenna Link's please

tdeck stand alone map download would be cool
why is the routing so poorly designed?
Do you have an alternative algorithm that works on our medium? We’re constantly evaluating ways to make it better.
@@Meshtasticman you guys are a real bunch of pricks overall… i stopped by the discord today and your admins and devs had the same crappy attitudes and power trips threatening to ban people over civil discourse/debates. the guy just asked a simple question. why does that deserve a condescending, pricky response? it is poorly designed. a lot of stuff doesnt work properly.. traceroute is a joke.. gps/mapping/mqtt stuff is a disaster. how about “we are condtantly trying to improve. we knows its not perfect. it started as a prject and now that its taking off, we’re trying to make significant improvements. this is a free, open source project and we dont dedicate our entire lives to it. we’re open to suggestions, ideas, and help.”….. but no. sarcastic bullshit. super annoying.
I would like to control the Meshtastic radio board from the Meshtastic android app via a wired (USB) connection vs. Bluetooth. Is that possible? Basically want to same app features and controls but not over Bluetooth. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!
Yes, the android app allows for a USB connection. You should see the device in the hardware list to select when you plug it in.
Csn you give a more technical description of the algorithm? Im always doing edge case kinda things. Need to know the specific details to get there
You can review the information here: meshtastic.org/docs/overview/mesh-algo/. For anything more specific you'll need to review the firmware repository on GitHub.
Someone please explain a little more to me. If I am out in the Wilderness and lose my cell signal...will this help me send out a text message through my phone to another phone anywhere?
No, it does not work remotely. It requires other devices to rebroadcast the messages.
Will this allow me to see the position of the two devices on the same map in atak if both are part of the same squad?
You should be able to see any Meshtastic device with one of the recent updates. Check the release history for notes.
What case is that on the heltec at top left of video?
TonyG/Tropho case. You can find it on Printables.
