I’m new to meshtastic, we (my brother in law and I) have some lillygo devices on their way to us as well as an arduino and parts to build a repeater. So theoretically I could use an arduino and meshtastic to control my driveway gate, correct? And I could use canned messages to open/close the gate with a single button press, in theory, right? I would just use the GPIO pins on the arduino to trigger a relay activate the hydraulic pump that swings the gate. And I could even put a voltage monitor on the batteries that power the pump and be able to remotely check battery status, right? Is meshtastic able to handle the coding and commands? Or is it setup for text transmission only?
These definitely sound plausible. I would suggest dividing the system to pieces and building small proofs of concept for each part. Good luck
Sounds like something you might be able to do using a secondary MCU connected to your Meshtastic device via serial. meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/module/serial
Okay I understand what I need to do to get a rotary encoder and canned messages going now I think. The only I'm having troubles with is knowing what kind of rotary encoder to buy. Any suggestions please? I'm running a ttgo tbeam.
Search "TTGO Tbeam Desk Case" on Thingiverse. There's a case file and in the description it has a recommended rotary encoder to use.
So can a canned message also be the current GPS location? That would be neat... 1 click and your location is send to a friend.
No, but this is also already possible. Both the Android and Apple apps allow you to request/exchange positions with other devices. Additionally, for devices with a user button you can double press it to send an adhoc position packet.

Most users consider the default LongFast channel as the public one. It will vary from region to region though. You can always make your own!
